    tarkayāmāsa sītēti
    kāraṇairupapādibhiḥ ॥
    Seeing the wide-eyed one, a stranger to hardship
    who deserved nothing but comforts,
    thus tormented by grief,
    emaciated and covered all over by dust,
    he concluded, after a good amount of
    deliberation and with sound reasoning,
    that she must be Seetā. These two Ṡlōkas seem to be out of order. They should come after Ṡlōka 40.

    She was heaving deep sighs
    like a scared young female serpent.
    There was no trace of luster left in her,
    caught in a vast net of great grief.
    She was like the flames of fire obscured by smoke.

    tāṃ smṛtīmiva sandigdhām
    ṛddhiṃ nipatitāmiva ।
    vihatāmiva ca ṡraddhām
    āṡāṃ pratihatāmiva ।
    sōpasargāṃ yathā siddhim
    buddhiṃ sakaluṣāmiva ।
    abhūtēnāpavādēna
    kīrtiṃ nipatitāmiva ॥
    She was like memory lapsed,
    treasure lost, faith broken,
    hope shattered, achievement obstructed,
    reasoning gone faulty and
    renown ruined by false allegations. Rāmāyaṇa abounds in metaphors. But the ones in these Ṡlōkas here are unique, comparing a person (Seetā) to abstract notions such as lapsed memory, broken faith, dashed hope, (Ṡlōka 33) goals fraught with hurdles, faulty reasoning, besmirched renown, (Ṡlōka 34), blunted skill (Ṡlōka 38) and an ill-formed sentence (Ṡlōka 39).
    These metaphors, like any other, make immediate sense only to those who have lived through such experiences.
    These metaphors also show what the civilization held as precious and vital and pursued vigorously – memory, faith, hope, goals, reasoning, renown, skills and well-formed speech.

    She was agonizing over the hardships of Rāma.
    Abducted by the Rākshasa, she was completely worn out.
    Lacking any strength, she of fawn eyes
    was staring around, here and there.

    the curves of dark eyelashes (being of no help),
    her face lacked any bearing of happiness,
    while she heaved sighs repeatedly.

    Pitiful, covered in dust and dirt,
    she who deserved all the glow, lacked luster
    like the king of stars lacking radiance,
    obscured by black clouds.

    Seeing Seetā, who was like a skill that
    had died away for lack of practice and use, repeatedly,
    his mind began to suspect (that it could be her).

    duḥkhēna bubudhē sītām
    hanumānanalaṅkṛtām ।
    saṃskārēṇa yathā hīnām
    vācamarthāntaraṃ gatām ॥
    Hanumān realized, to his deep sorrow,
    that the unadorned one, who was like an
    ill-formed sentence giving an unintended meaning,
    was indeed Seetā. Hanumān was so overcome by sorrow at her plight, that he did not even realize that he had found Seetā, which should have sent him jumping with joy.

    gātraṡōbhīnyalakṣayat ।
    sukṛtau karṇavēṣṭau ca
    ṡvadaṃṣṭrau ca susaṃsthitau ।
    maṇividrumacitrāṇi
    hastēṣvābharaṇāni ca ।
    ṡyāmāni cirayuktatvāt
    tathā saṃsthānavanti ca ॥
    Her body was seen glowing with
    whatever assortment of ornaments Rāma
    had described to be adorning her limbs,
    including the well-designed ear-pendants,
    the well-fitting ornaments nicknamed dog’s teeth,
    and the ornaments on her forearms studded
    with a variety of gems and corals,
    all of them developing black stains
    because of being on the body for long,
    and making marks on her body.

    I have to think that these
    are the ones described by Rāma.
    I cannot, of course, see what has been lost;
    but the remaining ones on her
    seem to be indeed the ones (he described).

    The Vānaras did see
    the lovely yellow upper garment
    that was shining like a sheet of gold
    being dropped and falling on the mountain.

    were indeed dropped by her.

    This cloth is badly crumpled,
    for it has been worn for a long time.
    Even then, its glow and color surely
    match those of the other one.

    strī praṇaṣṭēti kāruṇyāt
    āṡritētyānṛṡaṃsyataḥ ।
    patnī naṣṭēti ṡōkēna
    priyēti madanēna ca ॥
    This is the woman for whose sake
    Rāma’s heart is wrenched in four ways,
    with pity, compassion, grief, and love –
    pity that the poor woman is lost,
    compassion as she has no one to depend on but him,
    grief that the lost one is his wife and
    torment of love because of
    (the separation from his) beloved.

    aṅgapratyaṅgasauṣṭhavam ।
    rāmasya ca yathā rūpam

    The well-chiseled body of this lady
    with every limb and part perfect,
    is a match for that of Rāma;
    and so is his, to that of this black-eyed beauty.

    This lady’s mind is firmly fixed on his, and his on hers,
    or else neither she nor that Dharmātma
    could have managed to live even for an hour.

    hīnō yadanayā prabhuḥ ।
    dhārayatyātmanō dēham
    na ṡōkēnāvasīdati ॥
    Lord Rāma has done the virtually impossible,
    by holding on to life without collapsing
    due to the grief of separation from her.

    ய இமாம் மத்தகாஸிநீம் ।

    ya imāṃ mattakāṡinīm ।
    sītāṃ vinā mahābāhuḥ
    muhūrtamapi jīvati ॥
    Rāma of mighty arm has indeed done the impossible;
    how else would he be able to live even for an hour
    without the company of youthful and irresistible Seetā?

    ēvaṃ sītāṃ tadā dṛṣṭvā
    hṛṣṭaḥ pavanasambhavaḥ ।
    jagāma manasā rāmam
    praṡaṡaṃsa ca taṃ prabhum ॥
    Thus seeing Seetā, he who was born of Vāyu felt happy.
    His mind went to Rāma, full of praises for that lord.

    ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    ஸுந்தரகாண்டே பஞ்சதஸஸ்ஸர்க:॥
    ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
    ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
    sundarakāṇḍē pañcadaṡassargaḥ॥
    Thus concludes the fifteenth Sarga
    in Sundara Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
