ஸாகரஸ்ய பவிஷ்யதி ।
ப்ரவேஸஸ்சைவ லங்காயா:
ராக்ஷஸாநாம் ச தர்ஸநம் ॥
mamēdaṃ laṅghanaṃ vyartham
sāgarasya bhaviṣyati ।
pravēṡaṡcaiva laṅkāyāḥ
rākṣasānāṃ ca darṡanam ॥
My crossing the ocean would come to naught;
and so would my penetration into Laṅkā
and seeing the Rākshasas!

kiṃ māṃ vakṣyati sugrīvō
harayō vā samāgatāḥ ।
kiṣkindhāṃ samanuprāptam
tau vā daṡarathātmajau ॥
What will I say to Sugreeva
and the assembled Vānaras,
and to the two sons of Daṡaratha
after returning to Kishkindhā?

ந த்ருஷ்டேதி மயா ஸீதா

gatvā tu yadi kākutstham
vakṣyāmi paramapriyam ।
na dṛṣṭēti mayā sītā
tatastyakṣyati jīvitam ॥
If I return and tell Kākutstha
the extremely bad news
that I could not find Seetā,
he would give up his life right away.

தீக்ஷ்ணமிந்த்ரியதாபநம் ।
ஸீதாநிமித்தம் துர்வாக்யம்

paruṣaṃ dāruṇaṃ krūram
tīkṣṇamindriyatāpanam ।
sītānimittaṃ durvākyam
ṡrutvā sa na bhaviṣyati ॥
He would not survive hearing the bad,
harsh, terrible, cruel and stinging words
regarding Seetā that would burn all the senses.

பஞ்சத்வகதமாநஸம் ।

taṃ tu kṛcchragataṃ dṛṣṭvā
pañcatvagatamānasam ।
bhṛṡānuraktō mēdhāvī
na bhaviṣyati lakṣmaṇaḥ ॥
Seeing him thrown into such hardship
and his mind all but dead,
the sagacious Lakshmaṇa,
who is extremely loving of him,
would not survive either.

பரதோऽபி மரிஷ்யதி ।

vinaṣṭau bhrātarau ṡrutvā
bharatō'pi mariṣyati ।
bharataṃ ca mṛtaṃ dṛṣṭvā
ṡatrughnō na bhaviṣyati ॥
Hearing that the two brothers are dead,
Bharata will also die.
Seeing Bharata die, Ṡatrughna will not survive.

ந பவிஷ்யந்தி மாதர: ।
கௌஸல்யா ச ஸுமித்ரா ச

putrānmṛtānsamīkṣyātha
na bhaviṣyanti mātaraḥ ।
kausalyā ca sumitrā ca
kaikēyī ca na saṃṡayaḥ ॥
Seeing the sons dead, the mothers,
Kousalyā, Sumitrā and Kaikēyee,
for sure, will not survive.

ஸுக்ரீவ: ப்லவகாதிப: ।
ராமம் ததா கதம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
ததஸ்த்யக்ஷ்யதி ஜீவிதம் ॥
kṛtajñassatyasandhaṡca
sugrīvaḥ plavagādhipaḥ ।
rāmaṃ tathā gataṃ dṛṣṭvā
tatastyakṣyati jīvitam ॥
On seeing Rāma gone thus,
Sugreeva, the lord of Vānaras,
who is true to his word and
who remembers the favors he received,
would also give up his life.

நிராநந்தா தபஸ்விநீ ।
பீடிதா பர்த்ருஸோகேந

nirānandā tapasvinī ।
pīḍitā bhartṛṡōkēna
rumā tyakṣyati jīvitam ॥
The tormented Ruma, losing every sense of happiness,
will give up her life, extremely stressed and
suffering from the grief for her husband,
with a troubled mind and in a pitiable condition.

பீடிதா ஸோககர்ஸிதா ।
பஞ்சத்வம் ச கதே ராஜ்ஞி

pīḍitā ṡōkakarṡitā ।
pañcatvaṃ ca gatē rājñi
tārā'pi na bhaviṣyati ॥
Tārā who is already tormented by sadness
and battered by the grief for Vāli,
will not survive when the king dies.

sugrīvavyasanēna ca ।
kumārō'pyaṅgadaḥ kasmāt
dhārayiṣyati jīvitam ॥
How will the young Aṅgada
be able to hang on to life,
with both the mother and father lost
and the (death of) Sugreeva adding to his grief?

hyabhibhūtā vanaukasaḥ ।
ṡirāṃsyabhihaniṣyanti
talairmuṣṭibhirēva ca ॥
Stricken by the grief
over the loss of their lord,
the Vana dwellers will batter their heads
with their palms and fists.

mānēna ca yaṡasvinā ।
lālitāḥ kapirājēna
prāṇāṃstyakṣyanti vānarāḥ ॥
The Vānaras who are used to words of appreciation
and showering of gifts and honors
by the renowned king of Vānaras
will (certainly) give up their lives.

ந நிரோதேஷு வா புந: ।
க்ரீடாமநுபவிஷ்யந்தி

na vanēṣu na ṡailēṣu
na nirōdhēṣu vā punaḥ ।
krīḍāmanubhaviṣyanti
samētya kapikuñjarāḥ ॥
Neither in the Vanas, nor on the mountains,
nor in the houses anymore,
would the elephants among Vānaras
be able to assemble for play or for fun.

பர்த்ருவ்யஸநபீடிதா: ।
ஸைலாக்ரேப்ய: பதிஷ்யந்தி

saputradārāssāmātyā
bhartṛvyasanapīḍitāḥ ।
ṡailāgrēbhyaḥ patiṣyanti
samēṣu viṣamēṣu ca ॥
Tormented by the grief (over the loss) of their lord,
they will hurl themselves off the mountains
on to the grounds, plain and uneven,
along with their children, wives and friends.

ப்ரவேஸம் ஜ்வலநஸ்ய வா ।
உபவாஸமதோ ஸஸ்த்ரம்

viṣamudbandhanaṃ vāpi
pravēṡaṃ jvalanasya vā ।
upavāsamathō ṡastram
pracariṣyanti vānarāḥ ॥
The Vānaras will resort to poison or noose
or to throwing themselves into fire
or to fasting till death or to weapons.

கதே மயி பவிஷ்யதி ।
இக்ஷ்வாகுகுலநாஸஸ்ச
நாஸஸ்சைவ வநௌகஸாம் ॥
ghōramārōdanaṃ manyē
gatē mayi bhaviṣyati ।
ikṣvākukulanāṡaṡca
nāṡaṡcaiva vanaukasām ॥
My return would only lead to terrible wailing,
due to the destruction of the race of Ikshwākus
and that of the dwellers of Vana.

5.13.38 ஈ ஸோऽஹம் நைவ கமிஷ்யாமி
கிஷ்கிந்தாம் நகரீமித: ।
ந ச ஸக்ஷ்யாம்யஹம் த்ரஷ்டும்
ஸுக்ரீவம் மைதிலீம் விநா ॥
sō'haṃ naiva gamiṣyāmi
kiṣkindhāṃ nagarīmitaḥ ।
na ca ṡakṣyāmyahaṃ draṣṭum
sugrīvaṃ maithilīṃ vinā ॥
Hence I will not go to the city of Kishkindhā from here.
Nor am I capable of seeing Sugreeva, without Maithili.

தர்மாத்மாநௌ மஹாரதௌ ।
ஆஸயா தௌ தரிஷ்யேதே
வாநராஸ்ச மநஸ்விந: ॥
mayyagacchati cēhasthē
dharmātmānau mahārathau ।
āṡayā tau dhariṣyētē
vānarāṡca manasvinaḥ ॥
If I do not go but stay right here instead,
the two Dharmātmas and the super-charioters
will be able to hold on (to life) with
a glimmer of hope, and so will be the Vānaras.

நியதோ வ்ருக்ஷமூலிக: ।
வாநப்ரஸ்தோ பவிஷ்யாமி
ஹ்யத்ருஷ்ட்வா ஜநகாத்மஜாம் ॥
hastādānō mukhādānō
niyatō vṛkṣamūlikaḥ ।
vānaprasthō bhaviṣyāmi
hyadṛṣṭvā janakātmajām ॥
If I do not see the daughter of Janaka,
I shall live an austere life
at the base of trees in the woods,
eating whatever falls into
my hands and mouth providentially.

பஹுமூலபலோதகே ।
சிதாம் க்ருத்வா ப்ரவேக்ஷ்யாமி

bahumūlaphalōdakē ।
citāṃ kṛtvā pravēkṣyāmi
samiddhamaraṇīsutam ॥
Or, I shall make a fire
on the shores of the ocean,
an area plentiful in roots, fruits and water,
and throw myself into the raging flames.

லிங்கிநீம் ஸாதயிஷ்யத: ।

upaviṣṭasya vā samyak
liṅginīṃ sādhayiṣyataḥ ।
ṡarīraṃ bhakṣayiṣyanti
vāyasāḥ ṡvāpadāni ca ॥
Or else, I shall sit steady
resolved on fasting unto death
letting the crows and beasts eat my body away.

நிர்யாணமிதி மே மதி: ।
ஸம்யகாப: ப்ரவேக்ஷ்யாமி

idaṃ maharṣibhirdṛṣṭam
niryāṇamiti mē matiḥ ।
samyagāpaḥ pravēkṣyāmi
na cētpaṡyāmi jānakīm ॥
If I do not find Jānaki, I shall drown in the water.
I think this is how even the Maharshis end their life.

கீர்திமாலா யஸஸ்விநீ ।

kīrtimālā yaṡasvinī ।
prabhagnā cirarātrīyam
mama sītāmapaṡyataḥ ॥
With my not finding Seetā,
the beautiful creeper of my renown and fame
that has genuine roots
will find its end in this long night.

நியதோ வ்ருக்ஷமூலிக: ।
நேத: ப்ரதிகமிஷ்யாமி

tāpasō vā bhaviṣyāmi
niyatō vṛkṣamūlikaḥ ।
nētaḥ pratigamiṣyāmi
tāmadṛṣṭvā'stēkṣaṇām ॥
Or else, I will become a Tapasvi
observing austerities at the base of a tree.
I will not return from here without
seeing her, of beautiful black eyes.

ஸீதாமநதிகம்ய தாம் ।
அங்கதஸ்ஸஹ தைஸ்ஸர்வை:

sītāmanadhigamya tām ।
aṅgadassaha taissarvaiḥ
vānarairna bhaviṣyati ॥
If I return from here
without knowing about her, Seetā,
the Vānaras, including Aṅgada,
will survive no more.

ஜீவந் பத்ராணி பஸ்யதி ।
தஸ்மாத்ப்ராணாந் தரிஷ்யாமி

vināṡē bahavō dōṣā
jīvan bhadrāṇi paṡyati ।
tasmātprāṇān dhariṣyāmi
dhruvō jīvitasaṅgamaḥ ॥
(Letting things) fall apart is wrong in many ways.
There is a chance of seeing good times, by living.
Hence I will hold on to my life.
Those who live on, will certainly
meet each other (some day).
