Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 10
In this Sarga Hanumān approaches the magnificent bedstead and the mighty Rāvaṇa sleeping on it. He sees many beautiful women who have dozed off under the power of intoxication, hugging the musical instruments they were playing.
He then finds Mandōdari, an extraordinary beauty, on a bed that is distinctly set aside. Based on her youthful looks and extraordinary charm, he mistakes her to be Seetā and jumps with joy.

mahārhāstaraṇōpētaiḥ
upapannaṃ mahādhanaiḥ ॥
Looking around, Hanumān saw a prominent bedstead
which resembled like one in heaven,
encrusted with crystals and gems,
its legs and other parts inlaid with
designs of ivory, gold and lazulite,
covered with bedspreads of the best class,
along with posh and best couches.

The superb bedstead he saw was dazzling, like the sun.
It was decorated with garlands of Aṡōka blooms.
Women, on every side of it, were weaving fly-whisks.
It was fragrant, treated with
the vapors of the best of incense.
It was covered with sheep-skin and
best of the best bedspreads.
It was draped with festoons of rare flowers.

lōhitākṣaṃ mahābāhum
mahārajatavāsasam ।

candanēna sugandhinā ।
sandhyāraktamivākāṡē
tōyadaṃ sataṭidgaṇam ।
vṛtamābharaṇairdivyaiḥ
surūpaṃ kāmarūpiṇam ।
savṛkṣavanagulmāḍhyam
prasuptamiva mandaram ।
krīḍitvōparataṃ rātrau
varābharaṇabhūṣitam ।
priyaṃ rākṣasakanyānām
rākṣasānāṃ sukhāvaham ।
pītvā'pyuparataṃ cāpi
dadarṡa sa mahākapiḥ ।
bhāsva rē ṡayanē vīram
prasuptaṃ rākṣasādhipam ॥
The great Vānara saw the
heroic lord of the Rākshasas,
the darling of the Rākshasa women
and the unfailing joy of Rākshasas’,
lying fast asleep on that splendid bed,
with his eyes turned blood-red
after night-long sport and potations.
He of mighty arms was immense like a cloud.
Wearing dazzling and exquisite ear-pendants,
(his body) smeared with fragrant red-sandal paste,
he resembled a great rain-cloud
in the scarlet evening sky
with lightning playing on it.
He of attractive body,
who could take any form at will,
covered in splendid ornaments,
looked as if he were the
Mandara mountain with its wealth of
groves and thickets that lay asleep there.

rāvaṇaṃ vānararṣabhaḥ ।
āsādya paramōdvignaḥ
sō'pāsarpatsubhītavat ॥
Getting close to Rāvaṇa whose breath was
like the hiss of a serpent,
he was taken aback and recoiled like one
who had had a terrible fright. Imagine a small monkey, the form in which Hanumān was at this moment, to enjoy the cute reaction of Hanumān described in these two Ṡlōkas.

Then that great Vānara took to a stairway
and climbed on to an elevated platform
and looked at the sleeping tiger among Rākshasas.

With the King of Rākshasas asleep on it,
that superb bedstead looked like a great spring
with an elephant in rut lying in it.

Then he saw the stretched arms
of the mighty lord of Rākshasas
adorned with golden armlets
resembling the flagstaff of Indra.

They were marked with scars from the
thrust of the sharp tips of Airāvata’s tusks.
Those stout shoulders were rubbed by Vajra.
They withstood the strike by the discus of Vishṇu.

saṃgatau balasaṃyutau ।
sulakṣaṇanakhāṅguṣṭhau
svaṅgulītalalakṣitau ॥
Those arms were stout, strong, symmetrical,
well formed and were a perfect fit to his body,
with finely molded nails, thumbs, fingers and palms.

Their joints were strong.
They looked like iron clubs.
They were round like the trunk of an elephant.
Strewn on that bed, they shone
like serpents with five heads.

Those well decorated arms
that shone with the brilliance
of the fresh blood of a hare
were cooled and became fragrant with
the smearing of priceless sandal paste.

They were massaged well by the best of women.
They were smeared with the best of perfumes.
They were the ones who made Yakshas, Pannagas,
Gandharvas, Dēvas and Asuras wail in distress.

To the eyes of that Vānara,
those arms that lay stretched on the bed
looked like angry serpents sleeping
in the folds of the Mandara mountain.

tasya rākṣasasiṃhasya
niṡcakrāma mahāmukhāt ।
ṡayānasya viniḥṡvāsaḥ
pūrayanniva tad gṛham ॥
The breath that came from the huge mouth
of that lion among Rākshasas as he lay asleep
seemed to fill the entire chamber with
the intense smell of the liquor (he consumed)
and the flavors of sumptuous food (he ate),
making one recall the fragrance of
Cūta, Punnāga, Surabhi and Vakula flowers.

He was shining with the golden crown
studded with many a pearl and gem,
which was slightly displaced.
His face was lit up by
the dazzle of his ear-pendants.

The white silk (upper) garment
on him slipped to a side.
The superb yellow cloth,
which only the most opulent could afford,
was wrapped around him tight.

lying fast asleep on that splendid bed,
with his eyes turned blood-red
after night-long sport and potations.
He of mighty arms was immense like a cloud.
Wearing dazzling and exquisite ear-pendants,
(his body) smeared with fragrant red-sandal paste,
he resembled a great rain-cloud
in the scarlet evening sky
with lightning playing on it.
He of attractive body,
who could take any form at will,
covered in splendid ornaments,
looked as if he were the
Mandara mountain with its wealth of
groves and thickets that lay asleep there.

Getting close to Rāvaṇa whose breath was
like the hiss of a serpent,
he was taken aback and recoiled like one
who had had a terrible fright. Imagine a small monkey, the form in which Hanumān was at this moment, to enjoy the cute reaction of Hanumān described in these two Ṡlōkas.

They withstood the strike by the discus of Vishṇu.

well formed and were a perfect fit to his body,
with finely molded nails, thumbs, fingers and palms.

They were round like the trunk of an elephant.
Strewn on that bed, they shone
like serpents with five heads.

in the folds of the Mandara mountain.

The breath that came from the huge mouth
of that lion among Rākshasas as he lay asleep
seemed to fill the entire chamber with
the intense smell of the liquor (he consumed)
and the flavors of sumptuous food (he ate),
making one recall the fragrance of
Cūta, Punnāga, Surabhi and Vakula flowers.

which only the most opulent could afford,
was wrapped around him tight.

His breath was like the hiss of a serpent.
He was like an elephant sleeping
in the wide waters of river Gaṅgā.
