Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 9
In this Sarga, Hanumān sees the Vimāna called Pushpaka. From there, the flavors of the foods lead him to Rāvaṇa’s inner quarters and to his bed room. There he see the wives of Rāvaṇa sleeping, exhausted, having played love sports and drinking. Looking around, he then sees the splendid bedstead of Rāvaṇa.
தஸ்யாலயவரிஷ்டஸ்ய
மத்யே விபுலமாயதம் ।
ததர்ஸ பவநஸ்ரேஷ்டம்
ஹநுமாந்மாருதாத்மஜ: ॥
tasyālayavariṣṭhasya
madhyē vipulamāyataṃ ।
dadarṡa bhavanaṡrēṣṭham
hanumānmārutātmajaḥ ॥
Hanumān, the son of Vāyu, saw
a huge palace in the midst of
the complex of exquisite mansions.
அர்தயோஜநவிஸ்தீர்ணம்
ஆயதம் யோஜநம் ஹி தத் ।
பவநம் ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரஸ்ய
பஹுப்ராஸாதஸங்குலம் ॥
ardhayōjanavistīrṇam
āyataṃ yōjanaṃ hi tat ।
bhavanaṃ rākṣasēndrasya
bahuprāsādasaṅkulam ॥
That house of the lord of Rākshasas,
consisting of many individual mansions
was half a Yōjana wide and one Yōjana long.
மார்கமாணஸ்து வைதேஹீம்
ஸீதாமாயதலோசநாம் ।
ஸர்வத: பரிசக்ராம
ஹநூமாநரிஸூதந: ॥
mārgamāṇastu vaidēhīm
sītāmāyatalōcanām ।
sarvataḥ paricakrāma
hanūmānarisūdanaḥ ॥
Searching for the wide-eyed Seetā,
the princess of the Vidēha kingdom,
Hanumān, the subduer of foe,
went over every part of it.
உத்தமம் ராக்ஷஸாவாஸம்
ஹநுமாநவலோகயந் ।
ஆஸஸாதாத லக்ஷ்மீவாந்
ராக்ஷஸேந்த்ரநிவேஸநம் ।
சதுர்விஷாணைர்த்விரதை:
த்ரிவிஷாணைஸ்ததைவ ச ।
பரிக்ஷிப்தமஸம்பாதம்
ரக்ஷ்யமாணமுதாயுதை: ॥
uttamaṃ rākṣasāvāsam
hanumānavalōkayan ।
āsasādātha lakṣmīvān
rākṣasēndranivēṡanam ।
caturviṣāṇairdviradaiḥ
triviṣāṇaistathaiva ca ।
parikṣiptamasambādham
rakṣyamāṇamudāyudhaiḥ ॥
Hanumān then approached and inspected that
spacious residence of the lord of Rākshasas,
which was inhabited by many Rākshasas
and protected by two-tusked,
three-tusked and four-tusked elephants
and guards wielding weapons.
ராக்ஷஸீபிஸ்ச பத்நீபீ
ராவணஸ்ய நிவேஸநம் ।
ஆஹ்ருதாபிஸ்ச விக்ரம்ய
ராஜகந்யாபிராவ்ருதம் ॥
rākṣasībhiṡca patnībhī
rāvaṇasya nivēṡanam ।
āhṛtābhiṡca vikramya
rājakanyābhirāvṛtam ॥
It was the abode of Rākshasis
and the wives of Rāvaṇa.
It was filled with the princesses
who were abducted by force.
தந்நக்ரமகராகீர்ணம்
திமிங்கிலஜஷாகுலம் ।
வாயுவேகஸமாதூதம்
பந்நகைரிவ ஸாகரம் ॥
tannakramakarākīrṇam
timiṅgilajhaṣākulam ।
vāyuvēgasamādhūtam
pannagairiva sāgaram ॥
It resembled an ocean tossed by high winds,
crowded with crocodiles, sea-monsters and the
tumult of whales and great fishes, and serpents.
யா ஹி வைஸ்ரவணே லக்ஷ்மீ:
யா சேந்த்ரே ஹரிவாஹநே ।
ஸா ராவணக்ருஹே ஸர்வா
நித்யமேவாநபாயிநீ ॥
yā hi vaiṡravaṇē lakṣmīḥ
yā cēndrē harivāhanē ।
sā rāvaṇagṛhē sarvā
nityamēvānapāyinī ॥
The opulence that is hallmark of the
palace of Kubēra and the palace of
Indra who had green horses for his mount,
was seen in that house of Rāvaṇa,
never depleted and never dried up.
யா ச ராஜ்ஞ: குபேரஸ்ய
யமஸ்ய வருணஸ்ய ச ।
தாத்ருஸீ தத்விஸிஷ்டா வா
ருத்தீ ரக்ஷோக்ருஹேஷ்விஹ ॥
yā ca rājñaḥ kubērasya
yamasya varuṇasya ca ।
tādṛṡī tadviṡiṣṭā vā
ṛddhī rakṣōgṛhēṣviha ॥
The opulence in the house of the Rākshasa
matched, and even excelled, that in the
houses of King Kubēra, Yama and Varuṇa.
தஸ்ய ஹர்ம்யஸ்ய மத்யஸ்தம்
வேஸ்ம சாந்யத்ஸுநிர்மிதம் ।
பஹுநிர்யூஹஸங்கீர்ணம்
ததர்ஸ பவநாத்மஜ: ॥
tasya harmyasya madhyastham
vēṡma cānyatsunirmitaṃ ।
bahuniryūhasaṅkīrṇam
dadarṡa pavanātmajaḥ ॥
In the midst of that great palace,
the son of Vāyu saw another structure
beautifully fashioned with multitudes of
sculpted figures on it, of elephants in rut.
ப்ரஹ்மணோऽர்தே க்ருதம் திவ்யம்
திவி யத்விஸ்வகர்மணா ।
விமாநம் புஷ்பகம் நாம
ஸர்வரத்நவிபூஷிதம் ।
பரேண தபஸா லேபே
யத்குபேர: பிதாமஹாத் ।
குபேரமோஜஸா ஜித்வா
லேபே தத்ராக்ஷஸேஸ்வர: ॥
brahmaṇō'rthē kṛtaṃ divyam
divi yadviṡvakarmaṇā ।
vimānaṃ puṣpakaṃ nāma
sarvaratnavibhūṣitam ।
parēṇa tapasā lēbhē
yatkubēraḥ pitāmahāt ।
kubēramōjasā jitvā
lēbhē tadrākṣasēṡvaraḥ ॥
Adorned with every kind of gem,
it was a Vimāna known as Pushpaka
built originally for Lord Brahma by Viṡwakarma.
Kubēra, by performing extreme Tapa,
received it from the Grandsire.
The lord of Rākshasas won it from
Kubēra by his sheer valor.
ஈஹாம்ருகஸமாயுக்தை:
கார்தஸ்வரஹிரண்மயை: ।
ஸுக்ருதைராசிதம் ஸ்தம்பை:
ப்ரதீப்தமிவ ச ஸ்ரியா ।
மேருமந்தரஸங்காஸை:
உல்லிகத்பிரிவாம்பரம் ।
கூடாகாரைஸ்ஸுபாகாரை:
ஸர்வதஸ்ஸமலங்க்ருதம் ॥
īhāmṛgasamāyuktaiḥ
kārtasvarahiraṇmayaiḥ ।
sukṛtairācitaṃ stambhaiḥ
pradīptamiva ca ṡriyā ।
mērumandarasaṅkāṡaiḥ
ullikhadbhirivāmbaraṃ ।
kūṭāgāraiṡṡubhākāraiḥ
sarvatassamalaṅkṛtam ॥
Decorated well everywhere
and dazzling in its opulence,
it was supported by well-crafted
pillars made of gold and silver
covered with figures of wolves in relief.
With its well-designed rooms and halls
it was tall like Mēru and Mandara,
as if it was rising high to touch the sky.
ஜ்வலநார்கப்ரதீகாஸம்
ஸுக்ருதம் விஸ்வகர்மணா ।
ஹேமஸோபாநஸம்யுக்தம்
சாருப்ரவரவேதிகம் ॥
jvalanārkapratīkāṡam
sukṛtaṃ viṡvakarmaṇā ।
hēmasōpānasaṃyuktam
cārupravaravēdikam ॥
Well-constructed by Viṡwakarma,
it dazzled like fire and the sun.
It had golden steps and
beautiful and excellent platforms.
ஜாலவாதாயநைர்யுக்தம்
காஞ்சநை: ஸ்ஸ்பாடிகைரபி ।
இந்த்ரநீலமஹாநீல
மணிப்ரவரவேதிகம் ॥
jālavātāyanairyuktam
kāñcanaiḥ ssphāṭikairapi ।
indranīlamahānīla
maṇipravaravēdikam ॥
It sported lattice-windows and vent-holes
made of gold and crystal.
Its platforms were encrusted with
the best Indraneela and Mahāneela gems.
வித்ருமேண விசித்ரேண
மணிபிஸ்ச மஹாகநை: ।
நிஸ்துலாபிஸ்ச முக்தாபி:
தலேநாபிவிராஜிதம் ॥
vidrumēṇa vicitrēṇa
maṇibhiṡca mahāghanaiḥ ।
nistulābhiṡca muktābhiḥ
talēnābhivirājitam ॥
Its mosaic floors were glittering,
studded with extremely expensive
gems, corals and pearls
for which there was no match.
சந்தநேந ச ரக்தேந
தபநீயநிபேந ச ।
ஸுபுண்யகந்திநா யுக்தம்
ஆதித்யதருணோபமம் ॥
candanēna ca raktēna
tapanīyanibhēna ca ।
supuṇyagandhinā yuktam
ādityataruṇōpamam ॥
The shine of the gold and red colored
fragrant sandal with which it was coated,
made it shine like the morning sun.
கூடாகாரைர்வராகாரை:
விவிதைஸ்ஸமலங்க்ருதம் ।
விமாநம் புஷ்பகம் திவ்யம்
ஆருரோஹ மஹாகபி: ॥
kūṭāgārairvarākāraiḥ
vividhaissamalaṅkṛtam ।
vimānaṃ puṣpakaṃ divyam
ārurōha mahākapiḥ ॥
The great Vānara then climbed
on to that splendid Vimāna, Pushpaka,
that was fashioned well with
excellent rooms of many shapes and forms.
தத்ர ஸ்தஸ்ஸ ததா கந்தம்
பாநபக்ஷ்யாந்நஸம்பவம் ।
திவ்யம் ஸம்மூர்சிதம் ஜிக்ரத்
ரூபவந்தமிவாநிலம் ॥
tatra sthassa tadā gandham
pānabhakṣyānnasambhavam ।
divyaṃ sammūrchitaṃ jighrat
rūpavantamivānilam ॥
Standing there, he smelled the divine flavors
that emanated from the drinks and foods,
which spread around as if to give a
shape and texture to the air in there.
ஸ கந்தஸ்தம் மஹாஸத்த்வம்
பந்துர்பந்துமிவோத்தமம் ।
இத ஏஹீத்யுவாசேந
தத்ர யத்ர ஸ ராவண: ॥
sa gandhastaṃ mahāsattvam
bandhurbandhumivōttamam ।
ita ēhītyuvācēna
tatra yatra sa rāvaṇaḥ ॥
The aroma of those flavors seemed to
beckon him, of great strength,
saying ‘come this way, come this way!’,
like one does to an esteemed relation,
leading to the place where Rāvaṇa was.
ததஸ்தாம் ப்ரஸ்திதஸ்ஸாலாம்
ததர்ஸ மஹதீம் ஸுபாம் ।
ராவணஸ்ய மந: காந்தாம்
காந்தாமிவ வரஸ்த்ரியம் ॥
tatastāṃ prasthitaṡṡālām
dadarṡa mahatīṃ ṡubhām ।
rāvaṇasya manaḥ kāntām
kāntāmiva varastriyam ॥
Heading in that direction
he saw a huge beautiful hall
which had won the heart of Rāvaṇa
like a lovely and beautiful woman.
மணிஸோபாநவிக்ருதாம்
ஹேமஜாலவிபூஷிதாம் ।
ஸ்பாடிகைராவ்ருததலாம்
தந்தாந்தரிதரூபிகாம் ॥
maṇisōpānavikṛtām
hēmajālavibhūṣitām ।
sphāṭikairāvṛtatalām
dantāntaritarūpikām ॥
Its steps were spread with gems.
Its windows were shining with gold.
Its floor was studded with crystals
set with ivory in between.
முக்தாபிஸ்ச ப்ரவாலைஸ்ச
ரூப்யசாமீகரைரபி ।
விபூஷிதாம் மணிஸ்தம்பை:
ஸுபஹுஸ்தம்பபூஷிதாம் ॥
muktābhiṡca pravālaiṡca
rūpyacāmīkarairapi ।
vibhūṣitāṃ maṇistambhaiḥ
subahustambhabhūṣitām ॥
Its jeweled pillars were shining
with pearls, corals, silver and gold.
It was splendid with multitudes of
such well-made pillars.
நம்ரைர்ருஜுபிரத்யுச்சை:
ஸமந்தாத்ஸுவிபூஷிதை: ।
ஸ்தம்பை: பக்ஷைரிவாத்யுச்சை:
திவம் ஸம்ப்ரஸ்திதாமிவ ॥
namrairṛjubhiratyuccaiḥ
samantātsuvibhūṣitaiḥ ।
stambhaiḥ pakṣairivātyuccaiḥ
divaṃ saṃprasthitāmiva ॥
With its well decorated, tall pillars,
some slightly curved and some straight,
it seemed to have its wings stretched
ready to fly into the sky.
மஹத்யா குதயாஸ்தீர்ணாம்
ப்ருதிவீலக்ஷணாங்கயா ।
ப்ருதிவீமிவ விஸ்தீர்ணாம்
ஸராஷ்ட்ரக்ருஹமாலிநீம் ॥
mahatyā kuthayāstīrṇām
pṛthivīlakṣaṇāṅkayā ।
pṛthivīmiva vistīrṇām
sarāṣṭragṛhamālinīm ॥
It seemed to be as wide as the earth itself,
spread with a carpet whose design
showed the earth and its features such as
the various countries and clusters of residences.

which spread around as if to give a
shape and texture to the air in there.
ஸ கந்தஸ்தம் மஹாஸத்த்வம்
பந்துர்பந்துமிவோத்தமம் ।
இத ஏஹீத்யுவாசேந
தத்ர யத்ர ஸ ராவண: ॥
sa gandhastaṃ mahāsattvam
bandhurbandhumivōttamam ।
ita ēhītyuvācēna
tatra yatra sa rāvaṇaḥ ॥
The aroma of those flavors seemed to
beckon him, of great strength,
saying ‘come this way, come this way!’,
like one does to an esteemed relation,
leading to the place where Rāvaṇa was.
ததஸ்தாம் ப்ரஸ்திதஸ்ஸாலாம்
ததர்ஸ மஹதீம் ஸுபாம் ।
ராவணஸ்ய மந: காந்தாம்
காந்தாமிவ வரஸ்த்ரியம் ॥
tatastāṃ prasthitaṡṡālām
dadarṡa mahatīṃ ṡubhām ।
rāvaṇasya manaḥ kāntām
kāntāmiva varastriyam ॥
Heading in that direction
he saw a huge beautiful hall
which had won the heart of Rāvaṇa
like a lovely and beautiful woman.
மணிஸோபாநவிக்ருதாம்
ஹேமஜாலவிபூஷிதாம் ।
ஸ்பாடிகைராவ்ருததலாம்
தந்தாந்தரிதரூபிகாம் ॥
maṇisōpānavikṛtām
hēmajālavibhūṣitām ।
sphāṭikairāvṛtatalām
dantāntaritarūpikām ॥
Its steps were spread with gems.
Its windows were shining with gold.
Its floor was studded with crystals
set with ivory in between.
முக்தாபிஸ்ச ப்ரவாலைஸ்ச
ரூப்யசாமீகரைரபி ।
விபூஷிதாம் மணிஸ்தம்பை:
ஸுபஹுஸ்தம்பபூஷிதாம் ॥
muktābhiṡca pravālaiṡca
rūpyacāmīkarairapi ।
vibhūṣitāṃ maṇistambhaiḥ
subahustambhabhūṣitām ॥
Its jeweled pillars were shining
with pearls, corals, silver and gold.
It was splendid with multitudes of
such well-made pillars.
நம்ரைர்ருஜுபிரத்யுச்சை:
ஸமந்தாத்ஸுவிபூஷிதை: ।
ஸ்தம்பை: பக்ஷைரிவாத்யுச்சை:
திவம் ஸம்ப்ரஸ்திதாமிவ ॥
namrairṛjubhiratyuccaiḥ
samantātsuvibhūṣitaiḥ ।
stambhaiḥ pakṣairivātyuccaiḥ
divaṃ saṃprasthitāmiva ॥
With its well decorated, tall pillars,
some slightly curved and some straight,
it seemed to have its wings stretched
ready to fly into the sky.
மஹத்யா குதயாஸ்தீர்ணாம்
ப்ருதிவீலக்ஷணாங்கயா ।
ப்ருதிவீமிவ விஸ்தீர்ணாம்
ஸராஷ்ட்ரக்ருஹமாலிநீம் ॥
mahatyā kuthayāstīrṇām
pṛthivīlakṣaṇāṅkayā ।
pṛthivīmiva vistīrṇām
sarāṣṭragṛhamālinīm ॥
It seemed to be as wide as the earth itself,
spread with a carpet whose design
showed the earth and its features such as
the various countries and clusters of residences.
