Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 5
In this Sarga, Hanumān sees many Rākshasas and their women enjoying the night brightly lit by the moon. But, not finding Seetā, he feels numb, struck by grief.

gōṣṭhē vṛṣaṃ mattamiva bhramantam ॥
The sagacious one saw the moon of cool rays
ascending to the mid heaven,
casting a huge canopy of moonlight,
like an intoxicated bull restlessly pacing the cowshed. This Sarga does not seem to be authentic, with all its Ṡlōkas set in a longer meter and very much untypical of the simplistic, non-ornamental style of Vālmeeki.

He saw the moon of cool rays sailing (in the sky)
relieving the world of its stresses and strains,
making the great oceans swell
and brightening the moods of all creatures.

The beautiful moon, the lord of the night,
was shining with a splendor of Mandara mountain,
of the vast ocean and of lotuses in water.

The moon, shining in the sky,
was like a swan in a silver cage,
like a lion in the Mandara cave
and like a heroic warrior
on the back of a proud tusker.

The full-orbed moon shone
like a bull with mighty hump and sharp horns,
like a great white mountain with a lofty peak,
and like an elephant with its tusks covered with gold.

With the lord of the planets (sun)
clearing the mist from the cool drizzle
and dusting off his hare-shaped spot,
the spot of the brightly lit lordly moon
itself stood as a symbol of splendor.

tathāprakāṡō virarāja candraḥ ॥
Like a lion on the top of a boulder,
like the lord of tuskers on a battlefield,
and like the leader of people
who is established in a kingdom,
shone the moon with his brilliance.

moon rising and brightening up the sky,
was freed from the problem of darkness,
but got caught in the problem of
Rākshasas set to devour flesh,
while lovers let go of their problem of quarrels.

The music of string instruments,
pleasing to the ears, began.
Chaste women slept with their husbands.
Even Rākshasas of unimaginable ferocity,
were out at play.

The sagacious Vānara saw innumerable houses
full of drunken men heedless of their surroundings,
with the attendant profusion of chariots,
horses, elephants of Bhadra breed, couches
and opulence of every other kind.

Flinging their stout arms,
(the Rākshasas) made fun of each other
and indulged in drunk talk vilifying each other.

Some threw out their chests,
some threw themselves on women,
some assumed a variety of shapes and forms
and others flung their sturdy bows.

He saw women, some sleeping,
some beautifying themselves with creams and lotions,
some with comely faces laughing,
and yet others angry, heaving deep sighs.

(The city) was like a pool full of hissing snakes,
with its great tuskers trumpeting
to honor its men of high stature
and its warriors heaving long sighs.

He saw, in that city, world-class Rākshasas,
some of powerful intellect,
some of winsome speech,
some of resolute focus and
others bearing charming names and
indulging in various preoccupations.

He felt happy seeing some to be just like him,
handsome, bright and endowed with many virtues.
But he also saw others of ugly forms
with their nature matching their form.

He then saw their women
who were brilliant like stars,
endowed with virtues that
only the best would deserve,
who were very capable and absorbed
in drinks and in their lovers.

He saw, in the depths of the night,
some radiating beauty, some extremely shy,
some locked in the embraces of their lovers
and others drowned in joy
like birds covered in flowers.

The sagacious one saw others of righteous ways
seated in the laps of their loving husbands
on the terraces of lofty mansions,
caught in the throes of passion.

and others with exquisite figure and complexion
along with others who were separated from their lovers.

The best of the Veeras among the Vānaras saw
some united with their lovers
who filled their hearts with joy,
some who were full of love
and attractive like flowers,
and others who were of great allure
happy in their houses.

He saw an endless row of moon bright faces,
an endless row of lovely eyes with curved eyelashes
and an endless row of ornaments that seemed
like an endless row of lightning flashes.

But nowhere could he find Seetā
of extraordinary beauty
who adhered to righteous ways,
born and raised in a royal household and
who was like a vine in flower,
and slender like one chiseled by the mind.

(He could not find) her,
one of a kind and best among all women,
who adhered to the time-honored way of life
who captivated the rich heart of her husband,
whose eyes were filled with the image of Rāma,
and who was ravaged by the pangs of love.

(He could not find) her
who was suffering from the separation (from her man),
whose throat was choked by incessant tears,
who in days past had worn rare and
lovely necklaces with medallions,
whose voice was musical and whose
eyelashes were beautifully chiseled
and who resembled a peahen in the
woods that dances no more.

(He could not find) her who was like
a faint outline of the crescent moon,
a streak of gold coated with dust,
a scar left from the strike of an arrow,
and a rag of cloud torn off by the wind.

Not finding Seetā, the wife of Rāma,
lord of people and best among those skilled with words,
the Vānara fell numb for a while, struck by grief.

He saw the moon of cool rays sailing (in the sky)
relieving the world of its stresses and strains,
making the great oceans swell
and brightening the moods of all creatures.

of the vast ocean and of lotuses in water.

like a great white mountain with a lofty peak,

the spot of the brightly lit lordly moon
itself stood as a symbol of splendor.

Like a lion on the top of a boulder,
like the lord of tuskers on a battlefield,
and like the leader of people
who is established in a kingdom,
shone the moon with his brilliance.

while lovers let go of their problem of quarrels.

full of drunken men heedless of their surroundings,
with the attendant profusion of chariots,
horses, elephants of Bhadra breed, couches
and opulence of every other kind.

He saw, in that city, world-class Rākshasas,
some of powerful intellect,
some of winsome speech,
some of resolute focus and
others bearing charming names and
indulging in various preoccupations.

He felt happy seeing some to be just like him,
handsome, bright and endowed with many virtues.
But he also saw others of ugly forms
with their nature matching their form.

who were brilliant like stars,
endowed with virtues that
only the best would deserve,
who were very capable and absorbed
in drinks and in their lovers.

some radiating beauty, some extremely shy,
some locked in the embraces of their lovers

and others who were of great allure
happy in their houses.

of extraordinary beauty
who adhered to righteous ways,
born and raised in a royal household and
who was like a vine in flower,
and slender like one chiseled by the mind.

one of a kind and best among all women,
who adhered to the time-honored way of life
who captivated the rich heart of her husband,
whose eyes were filled with the image of Rāma,
and who was ravaged by the pangs of love.

lovely necklaces with medallions,
whose voice was musical and whose
eyelashes were beautifully chiseled
and who resembled a peahen in the
woods that dances no more.

(He could not find) her who was like
a faint outline of the crescent moon,
a streak of gold coated with dust,
a scar left from the strike of an arrow,
and a rag of cloud torn off by the wind.

Not finding Seetā, the wife of Rāma,
lord of people and best among those skilled with words,
the Vānara fell numb for a while, struck by grief.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
ஸுந்தரகாண்டே பஞ்சமஸ்ஸர்க:॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
