Sundara Kaanda - Sarga 2
In this Sarga Hanumān, passing through the Vanas, reaches the northern gateway of Laṅkā, which is situated on the top of Trikūṭa mountain. He sees that it is guarded by formidable Rākshasas. He thinks over carefully as to how he can make sure that Rāma’s object is not wrecked because of any missteps he might take and how he can manage to search all the places without being caught by the Rākshasas. Realizing that the Rākshasas would detect him regardless of which form he assumes, he decides to retain his original form, albeit a miniature one, the size of a house cat. He waits till it is dark and then enters the city. The beautiful shine of the moon appears in the sky along with the stars, as if to assist him.

saw Laṅkā situated on the
top of the Trikūṭa mountain.

the blessed Vānara of unequalled prowess
neither gasped for breath nor felt tired.

at a mere hundred Yōjanas, from end to end!

Ä krīḍān vividhān ramyān
vividhāṃṡca jalāṡayān ।
santatān vividhairvṛkṣaiḥ
sarvartuphalapuṣpitaiḥ ।
udyānāni ca ramyāṇi
dadarṡa kapikuñjaraḥ ॥
The great Vānara saw (many trees such as)
Sarala, Karṇikāra, date palms in flower,
Priyāla and Muculinda, wild jasmine, Kētaka,
Priyaṅgu full of fragrance, Neepa, Saptaparṇa,
Asana, Kōvidāra and Karaveera in flower and
other trees loaded with buds, weighed down with flower,
crowded with birds with their tops swaying in the wind.
He saw wells of lotus and lily
crowded with Haṃsas and Kāraṇḍavas,
various kinds of beautiful play-parks and pools,
and pleasure gardens that were perennially in flower
surrounded by many kinds of trees.

divi dēvapurīṃ yathā ॥
The blessed Hanumān, as he came closer,
found that the defenses of Laṅkā, ruled by Rāvaṇa
were buttressed, especially because he had abducted Seetā,
with moats that were shining with lotus and lily
and Rākshasas patrolling everywhere, shouting loudly.
He found that the great city was
like the city of Dēvas in the heaven
surrounded by golden ramparts with hundreds of spires,
decorated with festoons and flag posts,
its gateways made of gold with
a variety of vines engraved on them
and its main streets lined up with
residences that shone like planets and were
white and high like the clouds of the post-monsoon sky.

That great Vānara beheld Laṅkā
with its beautiful white mansions,
situated on the mountain-top
looking like a city poised in mid-air.

Conceived and built by Viṡwakarma,
it looked like a woman, with the
embankments and ramparts for her hips,
the water in the moats for her new garment,
cannons and spears for her hair
and spires for her ear-ornaments.
Reaching its northern gateway, the Vānara pondered:

It was lofty like the peak of Kailāsa,
seeming to be touching the sky.
With high rising mansions,
it seemed to be poised to fly into the sky.
Full of fierce Rākshasas,
it reminded one of Bhōgavati, the city of serpents.
Once home of Kubēra, it was
unimaginably well-built and detailed.
It was guarded by terrifying and valiant Rākshasas
with fierce teeth armed with spears and Paṭṭisas
like a cave by poisonous snakes.
Seeing that city of formidable defenses,
(situated in the middle of the) ocean
and considering the ferocity of the
enemy Rāvaṇa, the Vānara pondered:

பவிஷ்யந்தி நிரர்தகா: ।
ந ஹி யுத்தேந வை லங்கா

āgatyāpīha harayō
bhaviṣyanti nirarthakāḥ ।
na hi yuddēna vai laṅkā
ṡakyā jētuṃ surairapi ॥
Even if the Vānaras manage to come here,
it would be of no avail.
Even the Suras cannot conquer it in a war. Sundara Kāṇḍa caught the imagination of generation after generation, not only for the exploits and super-natural feats of Hanumān, but also for its gripping narration of the gyrations of a person who face formidable adversities, all by oneself.
This Kāṇḍa shows how even someone as powerful as Hanumān would cave into despair at times before regaining hope and enthusiasm all by oneself, with no one to cheer or counsel.
At times, in life, it feels as if the entire world is against one creating one obstacle or disappointment or hopeless situation after the other. Vālmeeki provides, in this Kāṇḍa, a vivid description of what goes through one’s mind in such situations.
Many people regularly read Sundara Kāṇḍa, or at least a few Ṡlōkas of it, with the hope that, with the grace of Hanumān, they too can navigate successfully and gracefully through the formidable adversities that life might throw against them.

What can even Rāghava of mighty arm do,
even if he could reach this
impenetrable and formidable Laṅkā, ruled by Rāvaṇa?

of negotiating with the Rākshasas,

nor of creating dissension among them,
nor of winning over them in a war.

Ä krīḍān vividhān ramyān

dadarṡa kapikuñjaraḥ ॥
The great Vānara saw (many trees such as)
Sarala, Karṇikāra, date palms in flower,
Priyāla and Muculinda, wild jasmine, Kētaka,
Priyaṅgu full of fragrance, Neepa, Saptaparṇa,
Asana, Kōvidāra and Karaveera in flower and
other trees loaded with buds, weighed down with flower,
crowded with birds with their tops swaying in the wind.
He saw wells of lotus and lily
crowded with Haṃsas and Kāraṇḍavas,
various kinds of beautiful play-parks and pools,
and pleasure gardens that were perennially in flower
surrounded by many kinds of trees.

dadarṡa hanumān laṅkām
divi dēvapurīṃ yathā ॥
The blessed Hanumān, as he came closer,
found that the defenses of Laṅkā, ruled by Rāvaṇa
were buttressed, especially because he had abducted Seetā,
with moats that were shining with lotus and lily
and Rākshasas patrolling everywhere, shouting loudly.
He found that the great city was
like the city of Dēvas in the heaven
surrounded by golden ramparts with hundreds of spires,
decorated with festoons and flag posts,
its gateways made of gold with
a variety of vines engraved on them
and its main streets lined up with
residences that shone like planets and were
white and high like the clouds of the post-monsoon sky.

That great Vānara beheld Laṅkā
with its beautiful white mansions,
situated on the mountain-top
looking like a city poised in mid-air.

seemed to be floating in the sky.

Conceived and built by Viṡwakarma,
it looked like a woman, with the
embankments and ramparts for her hips,
the water in the moats for her new garment,
cannons and spears for her hair
and spires for her ear-ornaments.
Reaching its northern gateway, the Vānara pondered:

acintyāṃ sukṛtāṃ spaṣṭām
kubērādhyuṣitāṃ purā ।
daṃṣṭribhirbahubhiḥ ṡūraiḥ
ṡūlapaṭṭisapāṇibhiḥ ।
rakṣitāṃ rākṣasairghōraiḥ
guhāmāṡīviṣairiva ।
tasyāṡca mahatīṃ guptim
sāgaraṃ ca nirīkṣya saḥ ।
rāvaṇaṃ ca ripuṃ ghōram
cintayāmāsa vānaraḥ ॥
It was lofty like the peak of Kailāsa,
seeming to be touching the sky.
With high rising mansions,
it seemed to be poised to fly into the sky.
Full of fierce Rākshasas,
it reminded one of Bhōgavati, the city of serpents.
Once home of Kubēra, it was
unimaginably well-built and detailed.
It was guarded by terrifying and valiant Rākshasas
with fierce teeth armed with spears and Paṭṭisas
like a cave by poisonous snakes.
Seeing that city of formidable defenses,
(situated in the middle of the) ocean
and considering the ferocity of the
enemy Rāvaṇa, the Vānara pondered:

பவிஷ்யந்தி நிரர்தகா: ।
ந ஹி யுத்தேந வை லங்கா
ஸக்யா ஜேதும் ஸுரைரபி ॥
āgatyāpīha harayō
bhaviṣyanti nirarthakāḥ ।
na hi yuddēna vai laṅkā
ṡakyā jētuṃ surairapi ॥
Even if the Vānaras manage to come here,
it would be of no avail.
Even the Suras cannot conquer it in a war. Sundara Kāṇḍa caught the imagination of generation after generation, not only for the exploits and super-natural feats of Hanumān, but also for its gripping narration of the gyrations of a person who face formidable adversities, all by oneself.
This Kāṇḍa shows how even someone as powerful as Hanumān would cave into despair at times before regaining hope and enthusiasm all by oneself, with no one to cheer or counsel.
At times, in life, it feels as if the entire world is against one creating one obstacle or disappointment or hopeless situation after the other. Vālmeeki provides, in this Kāṇḍa, a vivid description of what goes through one’s mind in such situations.
Many people regularly read Sundara Kāṇḍa, or at least a few Ṡlōkas of it, with the hope that, with the grace of Hanumān, they too can navigate successfully and gracefully through the formidable adversities that life might throw against them.

prāpyāpi sa mahābāhuḥ
kiṃ kariṣyati rāghavaḥ ॥
What can even Rāghava of mighty arm do,
even if he could reach this
impenetrable and formidable Laṅkā, ruled by Rāvaṇa?

rākṣasēṣvabhigamyatē ।
na dānasya na bhēdasya
naiva yuddhasya dṛṡyatē ॥
There is not even an iota of chance
of negotiating with the Rākshasas,
neither of enticing them,
nor of creating dissension among them,
nor of winning over them in a war.
