niṣpataṃṡca punaḥ punaḥ ।
pracchannaṡca prakāṡaṡca
candramā iva lakṣyatē ॥
Entering the thick mass of clouds
and emerging out of them,
he looked as if he were the moon,
becoming invisible and visible again and again.

plavaṅgaṃ tvaritaṃ tadā ।
vavarṣuḥ puṣpavarṣāṇi
dēvagandharvadānavāḥ ॥
Then, seeing the Vānara fly quickly,
Dēvas, Gandharvas and Dānavas
rained a shower of flowers on him.

siṣēvē ca tadā vāyū
rāmakāryārthasiddhayē ॥
Interested in aiding the
fulfillment of Rāma’s object,
the sun spared him from the (excessive) heat
and the Vāyu was kind
to that great Vānara as he flew.

ṛṣayastuṣṭuvuṡcaiva
plavamānaṃ vihāyasā ।
jaguṡca dēvagandharvāḥ
praṡaṃsantō mahaujasam ॥
Ṛshis extolled him as he flew along the sky,
and Dēvas and Gandharvas sang the praises
of him who possessed immense energy.

Amazed at that fatigue-free eminent Vānara,
Nāgas, Yakshas, Rākshasas, Dēvas and birds,
were all praise for him.

As Hanumān, a tiger among Vānaras, was thus flying,
the ocean, wanting to honor
the race of Ikshwāku, reflected:

sāhāyyaṃ vānarēndrasya
yadi nāhaṃ hanūmataḥ ।
kariṣyāmi bhaviṣyāmi
sarvavācyō vivakṣatām ॥
If I fail to help Hanumān, the lord of Vānaras,
I will be found at fault in every manner
by those who like to point things out.

ikṣvākusacivaṡcāyam
nāvasīditumarhati ॥
I owe my growth itself to Sagara,
the lord of the Ikshwāku dynasty.
Hence, this friend of Ikshwākus
should not be allowed to fail.

விஸ்ரமேத யதா கபி: ।
ஸேஷம் ச மயி விஸ்ராந்த:

viṡramēta yathā kapiḥ ।
ṡēṣaṃ ca mayi viṡrāntaḥ
sukhēnātipatiṣyati ॥
I should so arrange that
the Vānara rests for a while
and gets refreshed, before he proceeds
with the rest of the journey comfortably.

Making up his mind thus,
he called upon the eminent
mountain Maināka of golden core,
who was hidden, submerged in the water:

parighaḥ sannivēṡitaḥ ॥
O best of mountains! You have been
placed here by the king of Dēvas
to block the hosts of Asuras
who live in the nether world (from coming out).

dvāramāvṛtya tiṣṭhasi ॥
While they, regaining their strength,
want to emerge again, you stand firmly
covering and blocking the exit of
the immeasurably vast nether world.

tiryagūrdhvamadhaṡcaiva
ṡaktistē ṡaila vardhitum ।
tasmātsaṃcōdayāmi tvām
uttiṣṭha girisattama ॥
O mountain! You have the ability
to grow sideways as well as up and down.
Therefore, I urge you,
O best of mountains, to rise up.

tvāmuparyēti vīryavān ।
hanūmānrāmakāryārtham
bhīmakarmā khamāplutaḥ ॥
Hanumān, the tiger among Vānaras,
of terrific deeds and great valor,
is flying in the sky over you
for the sake of Rāma’s cause.

இக்ஷ்வாகுகுலவர்திந: ।

asya sāhyaṃ mayā kāryam
ikṣvākukulavartinaḥ ।
mama hīkṣvākavaḥ pūjyāḥ
paraṃ pūjyatamāstava ॥
It behooves me to help him, as he carries out
the task of the race of Ikshwākus.
For, the Ikshwākus command my regard
and more so, yours as well.

ந ந: கார்யமதிக்ரமேத் ।

na naḥ kāryamatikramēt ।
kartavyamakṛtaṃ kāryam
satāṃ manyumudīrayēt ॥
Please lend your help to me before
it is too late for the need at hand.
The task that needs to be done
but left undone would only add
to the annoyance of right-minded people.

திஷ்டத்வேஷ கபிஸ்த்வயி ।

salilādūrdhvamuttiṣṭha
tiṣṭhatvēṣa kapistvayi ।
asmākamatithiṡcaiva
pūjyaṡca plavatāṃ varaḥ ॥
Rise up from the water, so that
the Vānara can rest on you.
He, the foremost of the Vānaras,
is our guest and is worthy of all honor.

தேவகந்தர்வஸேவித ।
ஹநுமாம்ஸ்த்வயி விஸ்ராந்த:

dēvagandharvasēvita ।
hanumāṃstvayi viṡrāntaḥ
tataḥ ṡēṣaṃ gamiṣyati ॥
O you, who is full of gold in your belly!
O you, on whom Dēvas and Gandharvas rested!
Hanumān shall rest on you before
he continues with the rest of his journey.

kākutsthasyānṛṡaṃsyaṃ ca
maithilyāṡca vivāsanam ।
ṡramaṃ ca plavagēndrasya
samīkṣyōtthātumarhasi ॥
You shall rise, considering the
devotion of Kākutstha to Truth,
the separation of Maithili from her own,
and the trouble that the lord of Vānaras is taking.

உத்பபாத ஜலாத்தூர்ணம்

niṡamya lavaṇāmbhasaḥ ।
utpapāta jalāttūrṇam
mahādrumalatāyutaḥ ॥
Thus prompted by the salty ocean,
Maināka, full of gold in his belly,
covered with great trees and creepers,
rose swiftly to the surface.

yathā jaladharaṃ bhittvā

Then he emerged, breaking
through the waters of the ocean,
just as the sun with his bright rays
comes out, piercing through the clouds.

ஆதித்யோதயஸங்காஸை:
ஆலிகத்பிரிவாம்பரம் ॥
sa mahātmā muhūrtēna
sarvataḥ salilāvṛtaḥ ।
darṡayāmāsa ṡṛṅgāṇi
sāgarēṇa niyōjitaḥ ।
ṡātakumbhamayaiḥ ṡṛṅgaiḥ
sakinnaramahōragaiḥ ।
ādityōdayasaṅkāṡaiḥ
ālikhadbhirivāmbaram ॥
That Mahātma, covered with water all over,
revealed his golden crests
that shone like the morning sun
and seemed to touch the sky
along with the Kinnaras, Uragas on them
in just a matter of one Muhūrta
as had been ordered by the ocean.

பர்வதஸ்ய ஸமுத்திதை: ।

taptajāmbūnadaiḥ ṡṛṅgaiḥ
parvatasya samutthitaiḥ ।
ākāṡaṃ ṡastrasaṅkāṡam
abhavatkāñcanaprabham ॥
The sky, that normally shines like
the sheen of (the blade) of a sword,
gained the shine of gold when those
golden crests of the mountain arose.

ப்ராஜமாநை: ஸ்வயம்ப்ரபை: ।

jātarūpamayaiḥ ṡṛṅgaiḥ
bhrājamānaiḥ svayaṃprabhaiḥ ।
ādityaṡatasaṅkāṡaḥ
sō'bhavadgirisattamaḥ ॥
That great mountain, with the
glittering self-luminous golden crests,
dazzled like a hundred suns
(rising together at once).

hanumānagrataḥ sthitam ।
madhyē lavaṇatōyasya
vighnō'yamiti niṡcitaḥ ॥
Seeing it spring up in his path all of a sudden
from the middle of the salt water,
Hanumān felt certain that it was an obstacle
(placed deliberately in his way).

மஹாவேகோ மஹாகபி: ।
உரஸா பாதயாமாஸ

mahāvēgō mahākapiḥ ।
urasā pātayāmāsa
jīmūtamiva mārutaḥ ॥
That great Vānara, in his great speed,
knocked that lofty mountain down
with (the thrust of) his chest,
like the wind knocking off a cloud.

கபிநா பர்வதோத்தம: ।
புத்த்வா தஸ்ய கபேர்வேகம்

kapinā parvatōttamaḥ ।
buddhvā tasya kapērvēgam
jaharṣa ca nananda ca ॥
Knocked down thus by the Vānara,
that great mountain had a taste
of the speed of the Vānara
and was pleased and delighted.

மாநுஷம் தாரயந் ரூபம்
ஆத்மந: ஸிகரே ஸ்தித: ॥
tamākāṡagataṃ vīram
ākāṡē samupasthitaḥ ।
prītō hṛṣṭamānā vākyam
abravītparvataḥ kapim ।
mānuṣaṃ dhārayan rūpam
ātmanaḥ ṡikharē sthitaḥ ॥
Taking the form of a human and
standing on his own crest up in the sky,
the mountain, greatly pleased and joyed,
said these words to that sky-bound, heroic Vānara :

த்வமிதம் வாநரோத்தம ।
நிபத்ய மம ஸ்ருங்கேஷு

duṣkaraṃ kṛtavānkarma
tvamidaṃ vānarōttama ।
nipatya mama ṡṛṅgēṣu
viṡramasva yathāsukham ॥
O best of Vānaras!
What you have done is next to impossible.
Come down and take rest comfortably on my crests.

உததி: பரிவர்தித: ।
ஸ த்வாம் ராமஹிதே யுக்தம்

rāghavasya kulē jātaiḥ
udadhiḥ parivardhitaḥ ।
sa tvāṃ rāmahitē yuktam
pratyarcayati sāgaraḥ ॥
The ocean was deepened and extended
by the scions of Raghu’s family.
And hence it is honoring you,
who are wedded to Rāma’s wellbeing.

ஏஷ தர்ம: ஸநாதந: ।
ஸோऽயம் த்வத்ப்ரதிகாரார்தீ

kṛtē ca pratikartavyam
ēṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ।
sō'yaṃ tvatpratikārārthī
tvattaḥ sammānamarhati ॥
It is a time-honored Dharma to
pay back for the favor one received.
You should respect his wish;
he would like to return the favor.
