Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 66
In this Sarga, Jāmbavan asks Hanumān why he was sitting alone quietly. He reminds Hanumān that he is as strong as Garuḍa. He recounts the story of his birth to him. He tells that he is the son of Vāyu and is equal in strength to him. He reminds him of the episode of how he flew into the sky to snatch the rising sun, whom he mistook to be a fruit and how Brahma gave him the boon of not being slayed by any weapon in a battle and how Indra gave him the boon of commanding his death at a time he wills.
He tells Hanumān that he is like another Sugreeva for the Vānara army who were sunk in despair. He urges him to get up and launch forth with his full prowess to cross the ocean.
Hanumān then assumes a gigantic form of himself.

Jāmbavan, noting the sadness in which the army
of hundreds of thousands of Vānaras had sunk,
turned to Hanumān and said:

sarvaṡāstravidāṃ vara ।
tūṣṇīmēkāntamāṡritya
hanūmankiṃ na jalpasi ॥
O Veera among the world of Vānaras!
O the foremost of the savants of all Ṡastras!
O Hanumān! Why are you sitting by yourself,
so silent and without saying a word?

O Hanumān! You are an equal of
Sugreeva, the king of Vānaras, and
for that matter, of Rāma and Lakshmaṇa themselves
in power and strength.

garutmāniti vikhyātaḥ
uttamassarvapakṣiṇām ॥
Garuḍa, the best among all birds,
the son of Arishṭanēmi and Vinata,
is well known for his immense strength.

sāgarē sa mahābalaḥ ।
bhujaṅgānuddharanpakṣī
mahāvēgō mahāyaṡāḥ ॥
I have seen, many a time,
that bird of immense strength,
of great speed and great renown,
snatch the snakes from the ocean.

தாவத்புஜபலம் தவ ।

tāvadbhujabalaṃ tava ।
vikramaṡcāpi vēgaṡca
na tē tēnāpahīyatē ॥
You have the same strength
in your arms as he does in his wings.
You are no inferior to him
in your valor and speed.

You excel all creatures in
strength, wisdom, power and vitality.
O bull among Vānaras!
How is it that you are not readying yourself?

patnī kēsariṇō harēḥ ॥
Puñjikasthalā, an Apsara,
is the best of all Apsaras.
She is famously known as Añjanā,
the wife of the Kēsari, a Vānara.

குஞ்ஜரஸ்ய மஹாத்மந: ॥
vikhyātā triṣu lōkēṣu
rūpēṇāpratimā bhuvi ।
abhiṡāpādabhūttāta
vānarī kāmarūpiṇī ।
duhitā vānarēndrasya
kuñjarasya mahātmanaḥ ॥
My dear! She is famous in all the three worlds.
There is none equal to her in beauty on earth.
Because of a curse, she became a
Vānara woman who can take any form at will
and the daughter Kuñjara, a Mahātma
and the king of Vānaras.

mānuṣaṃ vigrahaṃ kṛtvā
rūpayauvanaṡālinī ।
vicitramālyābharaṇā
kadācit kṣauma dhāriṇī ।
acaratparvatasyāgrē
prāvṛḍambudasannibhē ॥
Taking the form of a young and beautiful woman,
clad in silks and wearing lovely flowers,
she was once strolling on the top of a mountain
that resembled a cloud in the monsoon season.

When she of wide eyes was
on the top of the mountain,
Vāyu gently lifted up her
lovely yellow garment of red border.

sa dadarṡa tatastasyā
vṛttāvūrū susaṃhatau ।
stanau ca pīnau sahitau
sujātaṃ cāru cānanam ॥
He then saw her rounded thighs
that pressed against each other,
the close and full breasts
and the lovely well-formed face.

தநுமத்யாம் யஸஸ்விநீம் ।

tanumadhyāṃ yaṡasvinīm ।
dṛṣṭvaiva ṡubhasarvāṅgīṃ
pavanaḥ kāmamōhitaḥ ॥
The very sight of that renowned woman
with her broad and wide Kaṭee, slender waist,
and exquisite figure, made
the wind—god succumb to love.

பர்யஷ்வஜத மாருத: ।

sa tāṃ bhujābhyāṃ dīrghābhyām
paryaṣvajata mārutaḥ ।
manmathāviṣṭasarvāṅgō
gatātmā tāmaninditām ॥
Losing his mind over that blemishless one
and lust taking over his every limb,
Vāyu embraced her with his long arms.

ஸுவ்ரதா வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ।

suvratā vākyamabravīt ।

kō nāṡayitumicchati ॥
Then, quite bewildered at that (sudden development),
she of high conventions said these words:
‘Who is it that is trying to mar
my single-minded devotion to my husband?’

மாருத: ப்ரத்யபாஷத ॥

na tvāṃ hiṃsāmi suṡrōṇi
mā bhūttē manasō bhayam ।
manasā'smi gatō yattvām
pariṣvajya yaṡasvini ॥
O you of lovely Kaṭee!
I am not going to violate you!
May your mind not cave in to fears!
O you of great renown!
I touched you only with my mind
when I took you into my embrace!

பவிஷ்யதி மயா ஸம: ॥
vīryavānbuddhisampannaḥ
putrastava bhaviṣyati ।
mahāsattvō mahātējā
mahābalaparākramaḥ ।
laṅghanē plavanē caiva
bhaviṣyati mayā samaḥ ॥
You will have a son of great valor and wisdom.
Endowed with exceptional vitality, energy,
strength and prowess, he will be my equal
in taking a leap and jumping across.

ஜநநீ தே மஹாகபே ।
குஹாயாம் த்வாம் மஹாபாஹோ

jananī tē mahākapē ।
guhāyāṃ tvāṃ mahābāhō
prajajñē plavagarṣabham ॥
O great Vānara of mighty arms!
Thus told and pleased about it,
your mother gave birth to you,
the bull among Vānaras, in a cave.

abhyutthitaṃ tatassūryam
bālō dṛṣṭvā mahāvanē ।
phalaṃ cēti jighṛkṣustvam
utplutyābhyudgatō divam ॥
Then, seeing the sun rise over the great Vana,
you, being young, taking it for a fruit
and wishing to seize it, sprang up and flew into the sky.

யோஜநாநாம் மஹாகபே ।

tējasā tasya nirdhūtō
na viṣādaṃ tatōgataḥ ॥
O great Vānara! You did not lose heart
even after going for three hundred Yōjanas
and being scorched by the sun’s splendor.

4.66.16 இ
4.66.16 ஈ ஸா து தத்ரைவ ஸம்ப்ராந்தா
ஸுவ்ரதா வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ।
ஏகபத்நீவ்ரதமிதம்
கோ நாஸயிதுமிச்சதி ॥
sā tu tatraiva sambhrāntā
suvratā vākyamabravīt ।
ēkapatnīvratamidam
kō nāṡayitumicchati ॥
Then, quite bewildered at that (sudden development),
she of high conventions said these words:
‘Who is it that is trying to mar
my single-minded devotion to my husband?’

4.66.17 ஆ அஞ்ஜநாயா வசஸ்ஸ்ருத்வா
மாருத: ப்ரத்யபாஷத ॥
añjanāyā vacaṡṡrutvā
mārutaḥ pratyabhāṣata ॥
Hearing those words of Anjana, the wind—god responded:

4.66.18 ஆ ந த்வாம் ஹிம்ஸாமி ஸுஸ்ரோணி
மா பூத்தே மநஸோ பயம் ।
மநஸாऽஸ்மி கதோ யத்த்வாம்
பரிஷ்வஜ்ய யஸஸ்விநி ॥
na tvāṃ hiṃsāmi suṡrōṇi
mā bhūttē manasō bhayam ।
manasā'smi gatō yattvām
pariṣvajya yaṡasvini ॥
O you of lovely Kaṭee!
I am not going to violate you!
May your mind not cave in to fears!
O you of great renown!
I touched you only with my mind
when I took you into my embrace!

4.66.19 ஈ வீர்யவாந்புத்திஸம்பந்ந:
புத்ரஸ்தவ பவிஷ்யதி ।
மஹாஸத்த்வோ மஹாதேஜா
மஹாபலபராக்ரம: ।
லங்கநே ப்லவநே சைவ
பவிஷ்யதி மயா ஸம: ॥
vīryavānbuddhisampannaḥ
putrastava bhaviṣyati ।
mahāsattvō mahātējā
mahābalaparākramaḥ ।
laṅghanē plavanē caiva
bhaviṣyati mayā samaḥ ॥
You will have a son of great valor and wisdom.
Endowed with exceptional vitality, energy,
strength and prowess, he will be my equal
in taking a leap and jumping across.

4.66.20 ஈ ஏவமுக்தா ததஸ்துஷ்டா
ஜநநீ தே மஹாகபே ।
குஹாயாம் த்வாம் மஹாபாஹோ
ப்ரஜஜ்ஞே ப்லவகர்ஷபம் ॥
ēvamuktā tatastuṣṭā
jananī tē mahākapē ।
guhāyāṃ tvāṃ mahābāhō
prajajñē plavagarṣabham ॥
O great Vānara of mighty arms!
Thus told and pleased about it,
your mother gave birth to you,
the bull among Vānaras, in a cave.

4.66.21 ஈ அப்யுத்திதம் ததஸ்ஸூர்யம்
பாலோ த்ருஷ்ட்வா மஹாவநே ।
பலம் சேதி ஜிக்ருக்ஷுஸ்த்வம்
உத்ப்லுத்யாப்யுத்கதோ திவம் ॥
abhyutthitaṃ tatassūryam
bālō dṛṣṭvā mahāvanē ।
phalaṃ cēti jighṛkṣustvam
utplutyābhyudgatō divam ॥
Then, seeing the sun rise over the great Vana,
you, being young, taking it for a fruit
and wishing to seize it, sprang up and flew into the sky.

4.66.22 ஈ ஸதாநி த்ரீணி கத்வாऽத
யோஜநாநாம் மஹாகபே ।
தேஜஸா தஸ்ய நிர்தூதோ
ந விஷாதம் ததோகத: ॥
ṡatāni trīṇi gatvā'tha
yōjanānāṃ mahākapē ।
tējasā tasya nirdhūtō
na viṣādaṃ tatōgataḥ ॥
O great Vānara! You did not lose heart
even after going for three hundred Yōjanas
and being scorched by the sun’s splendor.
