Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 65
In this Sarga, in response to the words of Aṅgada, all the Vānaras state how far they can each jump, varying from ten to eighty Yōjanas. Then Jāmbavan says being the aged one that he is, he can jump only ninety Yōjanas though he, in the prime of his youth, could circumambulate even Trivikrama.
Then Aṅgada says that he can jump one hundred Yōjanas but is unsure whether he can jump another one hundred Yōjanas for the return flight. Jāmbavan then tells Aṅgada that he is confident that Aṅgada can jump even a hundred thousand Yōjanas, but it is not appropriate for an army to deploy their leader in the task, because risking the leader is risking the whole enterprise.
Aṅgada then says that if that is the case there is no alternative but to fast unto death or to go back and get destroyed by Sugreeva. He urges Jāmbavan to think of a solution. Jāmbavan assures him that his task would not suffer and that he would spur Hanumān, who can surely accomplish the task, into action.

tē sarvē vānararṣabhāḥ ।
svaṃ svaṃ gatau samutsāham
ūcustatra yathākramam ।
gajō gavākṣō gavayaḥ
ṡarabhō gandhamādanaḥ ।
maindaṡca dvividaṡcaiva
suṣēṇō jāmbavāṃstathā ॥
Hearing those words of Aṅgada,
all those bulls among Vānaras,
Gaja, Gavāksha, Gavaya, Ṡarabha,
Gandhamādana, Mainda, Dwivida and Jāmbavan,
one by one, told how far they could each go.

Gaja said, ‘I can fly ten Yōjanas’ and
Gavāksha said ‘I can go twenty Yōjanas’.

The mighty strong and gritty Sushēṇa,
an eminent Vānara, said,
‘I promise that I can leap eighty Yōjanas!’

Duly regarding all those Vānaras who spoke thus,
Jāmbavan, the eldest of all, then said:

pūrvamasmākamapyāsīt
kaṡcidgatiparākramaḥ ।
tē vayaṃ vayasaḥ pāram
anuprāptāssma sāmpratam ॥
Once upon a time, I too had such prowess and speed.
But now, I have arrived at the
other end of the span of my life.

இதம் கார்யமுபேக்ஷிதும் ।

idaṃ kāryamupēkṣitum ।
yadarthaṃ kapirājaṡca
rāmaṡca kṛtaniṡcayau ॥
But that is not an excuse
to ignore the task at hand,
about which the king of Vānaras
and Rāma are very keen.

யா கதிஸ்தாம் நிபோதத ।
நவதிம் யோஜநாநாம் து

yā gatistāṃ nibōdhata ।
navatiṃ yōjanānāṃ tu
gamiṣyāmi na saṃṡayaḥ ॥
So, I shall let you know how far I can go now.
Without a doubt, I can go ninety Yōjanas.

Jāmbavan hastened again to say
to all those eminent Vānaras:

ப்ரதக்ஷிணீக்ருத: பூர்வம்
க்ரமமாணஸ்த்ரிவிக்ரம: ॥
na khalvētāvadēvāsīt
gamanē mē parākramaḥ ।
mayā vairōcanē yajñē
prabhaviṣṇussanātanaḥ ।
pradakṣiṇīkṛtaḥ pūrvam
kramamāṇastrivikramaḥ ॥
However, this is not only about
how powerful I used to be in jumping.
In the past, I circumambulated
the extremely capable and eternal Trivikrama
as he measured (the three worlds with his strides)
at the time of the Yajña of Virōcana.

ப்லவநே மந்தவிக்ரம: ।
யௌவநே ச ததாऽऽஸீந்மே

plavanē mandavikramaḥ ।
yauvanē ca tadā''sīnmē
balamapratimaṃ param ॥
But now I am old, and my prowess in flying has diminished.
In my youth, I had the ultimate speed, unmatched by any.

4.65.17 ஈ ஸம்ப்ரத்யேதாவதேவாத்ய
ஸக்யம் மே கமநே ஸ்வத: ।
நைதாவதா ச ஸம்ஸித்தி:

sampratyētāvadēvādya
ṡakyaṃ mē gamanē svataḥ ।
naitāvatā ca saṃsiddhiḥ
kāryasyāsya bhaviṣyati ॥
Today, at this age, I can go only that far by myself.
But that is not enough to accomplish this task.

அப்ரவீதங்கதஸ்ததா ।
அநுமாந்ய ததா ப்ராஜ்ஞோ

anumānya tathā prājñō
jāmbavantaṃ mahākapim ॥
Then the sagacious Aṅgada,
in all deference to Jāmbavan,
the great Vānara, said these words
that exuded his large-heartedness.

4.65.19 ஈ அஹமேதத்கமிஷ்யாமி
யோஜநாநாம் ஸதம் மஹத் ।
நிவர்தநே து மே ஸக்தி:

ahamētadgamiṣyāmi
yōjanānāṃ ṡataṃ mahat ।
nivartanē tu mē ṡaktiḥ
syānna vēti na niṡcitam ॥
I can go over this long stretch of hundred Yōjanas.
But I am not sure whether I have
enough strength to come back or not.

4.65.20 ஆ தமுவாச ஹரிஸ்ரேஷ்டம்
ஜாம்பவாந்வாக்யகோவித: ॥
tamuvāca hariṡrēṣṭham
jāmbavānvākyakōvidaḥ ॥
When that best of the Vānaras spoke thus,
Jāmbavan, who was a master of his words, said to him:

தவ ஹர்ய்ருக்ஷஸத்தம ।

யோஜநாநாம் பவாந் ஸக்தோ
கந்தும் ப்ரதிநிவர்திதும் ॥
jñāyatē gamanē ṡaktiḥ
tava haryṛkṣasattama ।
kāmaṃ ṡataṃ sahasraṃ vā
na hyēṣa vidhirucyatē ।
yōjanānāṃ bhavān ṡaktō
gantuṃ pratinivartitum ॥
O best of bears and Vānaras!
Your ability in flying is well known.
You can go even a hundred thousand
Yōjanas, and return as well.
But none would agree that
it is the right thing to do.

4.65.22 ஈ ந ஹி ப்ரேஷயிதா தாத
ஸ்வாமீ ப்ரேஷ்ய: கதஞ்சந ।
பவதாऽயம் ஜநஸ்ஸர்வ:
ப்ரேஷ்ய: ப்லவகஸத்தம ॥
na hi prēṣayitā tāta
svāmī prēṣyaḥ kathañcana ।
bhavatā'yaṃ janassarvaḥ
prēṣyaḥ plavagasattama ॥
My dear! A master is supposed to
deploy (others), but not be deployed (by others).
O eminent Vānara, all these people
are (ready here) to be sent by you.

4.65.23 ஈ பவாந்கலத்ரமஸ்மாகம்
ஸ்வாமிபாவே வ்யவஸ்தித: ।
ஸ்வாமீ கலத்ரம் ஸைந்யஸ்ய
கதிரேஷா பரந்தப ॥
bhavānkalatramasmākam
svāmibhāvē vyavasthitaḥ ।
svāmī kalatraṃ sainyasya
gatirēṣā parantapa ॥
It is our responsibility to protect you
since you are the master.
An army should protect its master.
O tormentor of the foe, that is how it works!

4.65.24 ஈ அபி வை தஸ்ய கார்யஸ்ய
பவாந்மூலமரிந்தம ।
தஸ்மாத்கலத்ரவத்தாத
ப்ரதிபால்யஸ்ஸதா பவாந் ॥
api vai tasya kāryasya
bhavānmūlamarindama ।
tasmātkalatravattāta
pratipālyassadā bhavān ॥
You are the linchpin, O subduer of foe,
for achieving this task.
Hence, my dear, you deserve to be guarded
like the most precious possession.

4.65.25 ஈ மூலமர்தஸ்ய ஸம்ரக்ஷ்யம்
ஏஷ கார்யவிதாம் நய: ।
மூலே ஸதி ஹி ஸித்த்யந்தி
குணாஸ்ஸர்வே பலோதயா: ॥
mūlamarthasya saṃrakṣyam
ēṣa kāryavidāṃ nayaḥ ।
mūlē sati hi siddhyanti
guṇāssarvē phalōdayāḥ ॥
The tap-root of an enterprise
should be jealously guarded.
This is the strategy that people
who know how to accomplish a mission follow.
With the tap-root intact,
everything else that is required for success
will automatically fall in place.

4.65.26 ஈ தத்பவாநஸ்ய கார்யஸ்ய
ஸாதநே ஸத்யவிக்ரம ।
புத்திவிக்ரமஸம்பந்நோ
ஹேதுரத்ர பரந்தப ॥
tadbhavānasya kāryasya
sādhanē satyavikrama ।
buddhivikramasampannō
hēturatra parantapa ॥
O you of true prowess! Hence, you are
the key for accomplishing this mission.
Endowed with intelligence and prowess,
O scorcher of foe, you are the basis
(for all this to move forward)!

4.65.27 ஈ குருஸ்ச குருபுத்ரஸ்ச
த்வம் ஹி ந: கபிஸத்தம ।
பவந்தமாஸ்ரித்ய வயம்
ஸமர்தா ஹ்யர்தஸாதநே ॥
guruṡca guruputraṡca
tvaṃ hi naḥ kapisattama ।
bhavantamāṡritya vayam
samarthā hyarthasādhanē ॥
You, the son of our leader, is the leader (now).
By clinging to you, O eminent Vānara,
we can certainly accomplish the object.

4.65.28 ஈ உக்தவாக்யம் மஹாப்ராஜ்ஞம்
ஜாம்பவந்தம் மஹாகபி: ।
ப்ரத்யுவாசோத்தரம் வாக்யம்
வாலிஸூநுரதாங்கத: ॥
uktavākyaṃ mahāprājñam
jāmbavantaṃ mahākapiḥ ।
pratyuvācōttaraṃ vākyam
vālisūnurathāṅgadaḥ ॥
To that extraordinarily sagacious
Jāmbavan who spoke those words,
Aṅgada, the great Vānara, son of Vāli,
responded with these words:

நாந்யோ வாநரபுங்கவ: ।
புந: கல்விதமஸ்மாபி:
கார்யம் ப்ராயோபவேஸநம் ॥
yadi nāhaṃ gamiṣyāmi
nānyō vānarapuṅgavaḥ ।
punaḥ khalvidamasmābhiḥ
kāryaṃ prāyōpavēṡanam ॥
If I must not go and there is
no other bull among Vānaras to go,
the only alternative is to resort
to fasting unto death, once again.

4.65.30 ஈ ந ஹ்யக்ருத்வா ஹரிபதே:
ஸந்தேஸம் தஸ்ய தீமத: ।
தத்ராபி கத்வா ப்ராணாநாம்
பஸ்யாமி பரிரக்ஷணம் ॥
na hyakṛtvā haripatēḥ
sandēṡaṃ tasya dhīmataḥ ।
tatrāpi gatvā prāṇānām
paṡyāmi parirakṣaṇam ॥
With the command of the
sagacious lord of Vānaras not fulfilled,
I do not think I can hope to
hang on to my life when I go there.

4.65.31 ஈ ஸ ஹி ப்ரஸாதே சாத்யர்தம்
கோபே ச ஹரிரீஸ்வர: ।
அதீத்ய தஸ்ய ஸந்தேஸம்
விநாஸோ கமநே பவேத் ॥
sa hi prasādē cātyartham
kōpē ca harirīṡvaraḥ ।
atītya tasya sandēṡam
vināṡō gamanē bhavēt ॥
That Vānara (Sugreeva) is very much capable of
showering his grace as well as condemning with his wrath.
Disregarding his orders is a sure path to our destruction.

4.65.32 ஈ தத்ததா ஹ்யஸ்ய கார்யஸ்ய
ந பவத்யந்யதா கதி: ।
தத்பவாநேவ த்ருஷ்டார்த:
ஸஞ்சிந்தயிது மர்ஹதி ॥
tattathā hyasya kāryasya
na bhavatyanyathā gatiḥ ।
tadbhavānēva dṛṣṭārthaḥ
sañcintayitu marhati ॥
It sure will end up that way.
There is no way that this will turn out any different.
Hence, you alone, knowing everything,
can think of a way out.

4.65.33 ஈ ஸோऽங்கதேந ததா வீர:
ப்ரத்யுக்த: ப்லவகர்ஷப: ।
ஜாம்பவாநுத்தமம் வாக்யம்
ப்ரோவாசேதம் ததோऽங்கதம் ॥
sō'ṅgadēna tadā vīraḥ
pratyuktaḥ plavagarṣabhaḥ ।
jāmbavānuttamaṃ vākyam
prōvācēdaṃ tatō'ṅgadam ॥
Urged thus by Aṅgada, Jāmbavan,
a Veera and a bull among Vānaras,
responded to Aṅgada with these excellent words:

4.65.34 ஈ தஸ்ய தே வீர கார்யஸ்ய
ந கிஞ்சித்பரிஹாஸ்யதே ।
ஏஷ ஸஞ்சோதயாம்யேநம்
ய: கார்யம் ஸாதயிஷ்யதி ॥
tasya tē vīra kāryasya
na kiñcitparihāsyatē ।
ēṣa sañcōdayāmyēnam
yaḥ kāryaṃ sādhayiṣyati ॥
O Veera! This task of yours
is not going to suffer even in the least.
Let me spur the one who can accomplish it.

ஏகாந்தமாஸ்ரித்ய ஸுகோபவிஷ்டம் ।

ஹரிப்ரவீரம் ஹநுமந்தமேவ ॥
tata
ratītaṃ plavatāṃvariṣṭhamēkāntamāṡritya sukhōpaviṣṭham ।
sañcōdayāmāsa haripravīrō
haripravīraṃ hanumantamēva ॥
Then that eminent Veera among Vānaras (Jāmbavan),
urged the celebrated Hanumān,
another eminent Veera among Vānaras,
the foremost of those who could jump,
who was enjoying by himself, sitting alone.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே ।
கிஷ்கிந்தாகாண்டே பஞ்சஷ்ஷஷ்டிதமஸ்ஸர்க:
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē ।
kiṣkindhākāṇḍē pañcaṣṣaṣṭitamassargaḥ
Thus concludes the sixty fifth Sarga
in Kishkindhā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
