Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 61
In this Sarga, Sampāti tells Niṡākara how he and his brother Jaṭāyu foolishly tried to fly up to the sun and how his wings got burnt, while he protected Jaṭāyu with his wings. He tells Niṡākara that having lost his kingdom, brother and wings, he no more wishes to live.

துஷ்கரம் ஸஹஸாத்க்ருதம் ।
ஆசசக்ஷே முநேஸ்ஸர்வம்
ஸூர்யாநுகமநம் ததா ॥
tatastaddāruṇaṃ karma
duṣkaraṃ sahasātkṛtam ।
ācacakṣē munēssarvam
sūryānugamanaṃ tathā ॥
Thereupon I told the Muni all about that
sorry episode of following (unto) the sun,
an impossible undertaking,
driven nothing but by impulse.

லஜ்ஜயா சாகுலேந்த்ரிய: ।
பரிஸ்ராந்தோ ந ஸக்நோமி

lajjayā cākulēndriyaḥ ।
pariṡrāntō na ṡaknōmi
vacanaṃ paribhāṣitum ॥
O Bhagawan! I am unable to speak coherently,
being wounded, tired and overwhelmed by shame.

ஸங்கர்ஷாத்தர்பமோஹிதௌ ।
ஆகாஸம் பதிதௌ தூராத்

ahaṃ caiva jaṭāyuṡca
saṅgharṣāddharpamōhitau ।
ākāṡaṃ patitau dūrāt
jijñāsantau parākramam ॥
Jaṭāyu and I, impelled by our foolish pride,
competed with each other to test our valor
and flew far into the sky.

முநீநாமக்ரத: பணம் ।
ரவிஸ்ஸ்யாதநுயாதவ்யோ

kailāsaṡikharē baddhvā
munīnāmagrataḥ paṇam ।
ravissyādanuyātavyō
yāvadastaṃ mahāgirim ॥
We made a bet in the presence of
the assembled Munis on the peak of Kailāsa,
that we should follow the sun
to the mountain behind which he sets.

அபஸ்யாவ மஹீதலே ।
ரதசக்ரப்ரமாணாநி

apaṡyāva mahītalē ।
rathacakrapramāṇāni
nagarāṇi pṛthakpṛthak ॥
Flying into the sky simultaneously,
we saw on the earth cities,
each distinct from the other
and looking no bigger than a cart-wheel.

க்வ சித்பூஷணவிஸ்வந: ।
காயந்தீஸ்சாங்கநா பஹ்வீ:
பஸ்யாவோ ரக்தவாஸஸ: ॥
kva cidvāditraghōṣaṡca
kva cidbhūṣaṇavisvanaḥ ।
gāyantīṡcāṅganā bahvīḥ
paṡyāvō raktavāsasaḥ ॥
Sounds from music instruments arose from some,
and the clang of ornaments from others.
We saw many women, clad in red garments, singing.

ஆதித்யபதமாஸ்திதௌ ।
ஆவாமாலோகயாவஸ்தத்
வநம் ஸாத்வலஸம்ஸ்திதம் ॥
tūrṇamutpatya cākāṡam
ādityapathamāsthitau ।
āvāmālōkayāvastat
vanaṃ ṡādvalasaṃsthitam ॥
Very quickly, getting high into the sky,
we followed the tracks of the sun.
When we looked down, the Vana there
looked like a green sward.

த்ருஸ்யதே பூஸ்ஸிலோச்சயை: ।
ஆபகாபிஸ்ச ஸம்வீதா
ஸூத்ரைரிவ வஸுந்தரா ॥
upalairiva sañchannā
dṛṡyatē bhūṡṡilōccayaiḥ ।
āpagābhiṡca saṃvītā
sūtrairiva vasundharā ॥
The mountains seemed like pebbles covering the earth,
and the rivers like threads worn by the earth.

4.61.9 ஈ ஹிமவாம்ஸ்சைவ விந்த்யஸ்ச
மேருஸ்ச ஸுமஹாகிரி: ।
பூதலே ஸம்ப்ரகாஸந்தே
நாகா இவ ஜலாஸயே ॥
himavāṃṡcaiva vindhyaṡca
mēruṡca sumahāgiriḥ ।
bhūtalē samprakāṡantē
nāgā iva jalāṡayē ॥
The Himālayas, the Vindhya and Mēru the huge mountain
shone on earth like elephants in a lake.

4.61.10 ஈ தீவ்ரஸ்ஸ்வேதஸ்ச கேதஸ்ச
பயம் சாஸீத்ததாऽऽவயோ: ।
ஸமாவிஸத மோஹஸ்ச
ததோ மூர்சா ச தாருணா ॥
tīvrassvēdaṡca khēdaṡca
bhayaṃ cāsīttadā''vayōḥ ।
samāviṡata mōhaṡca
tatō mūrchā ca dāruṇā ॥
But then, we felt scared, worried
and started sweating profusely.
We also felt disoriented and terrible, losing our senses.

4.61.11 ஈ ந ச திக்ஜ்ஞாயதே யாம்யா
நாக்நேயீ ந ச வாருணீ ।
யுகாந்தே நியதோ லோகோ
ஹதோ தக்த இவாக்நிநா ॥
na ca digjñāyatē yāmyā
nāgnēyī na ca vāruṇī ।
yugāntē niyatō lōkō
hatō dagdha ivāgninā ॥
It was not clear which was the direction of Yama,
which was of Agni and which was of Varuṇa.
The world was still, like it would be
at the end of the time, burnt down by fire.
The quarter ruled by Yama is south.
The quarter ruled by Agni is south east.
The quarter ruled by Varuṇa is west.

4.61.12 ஈ மநஸ்ச மே ஹதம் பூய:
சக்ஷு: ப்ராப்ய து ஸம்ஸ்ரயம் ।
யத்நேந மஹதா ஹ்யஸ்மிந்
மநஸ்ஸந்தாய சக்ஷுஷீ ॥
manaṡca mē hataṃ bhūyaḥ
cakṣuḥ prāpya tu saṃṡrayam ।
yatnēna mahatā hyasmin
manassandhāya cakṣuṣī ॥
My mind became numb.
But, relying on my eyes, I locked my mind
with great effort, on what the eyes were seeing.

பாஸ்கர: ப்ரதிலோகித: ।
துல்ய: ப்ருத்வீப்ரமாணேந
பாஸ்கர: ப்ரதிபாதி நௌ ॥
yatnēna mahatā bhūyō
bhāskaraḥ pratilōkitaḥ ।
tulyaḥ pṛthvīpramāṇēna
bhāskaraḥ pratibhāti nau ॥
And again with great effort
we were able to take a look at the sun
when he looked as big as the earth to us.

நிபபாத மஹீம் தத: ।
தம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா தூர்ணமாகாஸாத்
ஆத்மாநம் முக்தவாநஹம் ॥
jaṭāyurmāmanāpṛcchya
nipapāta mahīṃ tataḥ ।
taṃ dṛṣṭvā tūrṇamākāṡāt
ātmānaṃ muktavānaham ॥
Then Jaṭāyu, without even telling me,
descended precipitately down to the earth.
Seeing him do that, I swiftly let myself down.

ஜடாயுர்ந ப்ரதஹ்யதே ।
ப்ரமாதாத்தத்ர நிர்தக்த:
பதந்வாயுபதாதஹம் ॥
pakṣābhyāṃ ca mayā guptō
jaṭāyurna pradahyatē ।
pramādāttatra nirdagdhaḥ
patanvāyupathādaham ॥
With my wings covering him,
Jaṭāyu escaped from being burnt.
As I fell from the track of the wind,
I was burnt because of my carelessness.

ஜநஸ்தாநே ஜடாயுஷம் ।
அஹம் து பதிதோ விந்த்யே
தக்தபக்ஷோ ஜடீக்ருத: ॥
āṡaṅkē taṃ nipatitam
janasthānē jaṭāyuṣam ।
ahaṃ tu patitō vindhyē
dagdhapakṣō jaḍīkṛtaḥ ॥
I guess Jaṭāyu had fallen down at Janasthāna.
I fell on the Vindhya in a daze, my wings burnt.

4.61.17 ஈ ராஜ்யாச்ச ஹீநோ ப்ராத்ரா ச
பக்ஷாப்யாம் விக்ரமேண ச ।
ஸர்வதா மர்துமேவேச்சந்
பதிஷ்யே ஸிகராத்கிரே: ॥
rājyācca hīnō bhrātrā ca
pakṣābhyāṃ vikramēṇa ca ।
sarvathā martumēvēcchan
patiṣyē ṡikharādgirēḥ ॥
Having lost my kingdom, my brother,
my wings and my valor,
I long for nothing more than death,
and I shall hurl myself down
from the top of the mountain.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே ।
கிஷ்கிந்தாகாண்டே ஏகஷஷ்டிதமஸ்ஸர்க:
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē ।
kiṣkindhākāṇḍē ēkaṣaṣṭitamassargaḥ
Thus concludes the sixty first Sarga
in Kishkindhā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
