Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 58
In this Sarga, Sampāti tells his story of how he and his brother Jaṭāyu flew high in the skies towards the sun, how his brother got exhausted midway, how he shielded his brother with his wings, how his wings got burnt by the rays of the sun and how he fell on the Vindhya mountain.
He tells that eagles like him, the descendants of Garuḍa, fly in the highest of altitudes, above which no birds fly, and for that reason, he is endowed with a vision that enables him to see clearly even beyond one hundred Yōjanas.
He tells that he can see Rāvaṇa and Seetā in Lanka, from where he is. He says that they should think of a plan to cross the ocean and go there. The Vānaras feel extremely happy hearing this.

ityuktaḥ karuṇaṃ vākyam
vānaraistyaktajīvitaiḥ ।
sabāṣpō vānarāngṛdhraḥ
pratyuvāca mahāsvanaḥ ॥
When he heard those piteous words of the Vānaras,
who had all but given up their lives,
the eagle, with tears in his eyes,
replied in his powerful voice:

yamākhyāta hataṃ yuddhē
rāvaṇēna balīyasā ॥
O Vānaras! My younger brother’s
name is Jaṭāyu, whom you report as
having been killed in combat
by the stronger Rāvaṇa.

Being old and lacking wings,
I am not capable of avenging
the death of my brother.
I should but bear with the news I heard.

jvalantaṃ raṡmimālinam ॥
Long ago, during the time when Vṛtra was slain,
he and I, competing with each other,
flew towards the burning sun
who stretched his rays.

madhyaṃ prāptē tu sūryē tu

Taking to the skies, we flew with greed speed.
Halfway to the sun, Jaṭāyu felt exhausted.

tamahaṃ bhrātaraṃ dṛṣṭvā
sūryaraṡmibhirarditam ।
pakṣābhyāṃ chādayāmāsa
snēhātparamavihvalam ॥
Seeing my brother hit by the rays of the sun
and finding him extremely panicky,
I covered him with my wings
out of love and concern for him.

விந்த்யேऽஹம் வாநரர்ஷபா: ।

nirdagdhapatraḥ patitō
vindhyē'haṃ vānararṣabhāḥ ।
ahamasminvasanbhrātuḥ
pravṛttiṃ nōpalakṣayē ॥
O bulls among Vānaras!
My wings burnt, I fell on the Vindhyas.
And living here, I had no news of my brother.

Then, told thus by Sampāti, the brother of Jaṭāyu,
Aṅgada, the sagacious crown prince, responded saying:

ākhyā hi yadi jānāsi
nilayaṃ tasya rakṣasaḥ ॥
If you are the brother of Jaṭāyu
and if you have heard what I have said,
please tell me where that
Rakshasa lives, if you happen to know.

Does Rāvaṇa, that wretched, myopic Rākshasa
live near or far? Tell us if you know.

vānarānsampraharṣayan ॥
Then the exceedingly powerful
elder brother of Jaṭāyu said words
that were characteristic of him,
making the Vānaras extremely happy:

கதவீர்ய: ப்லவங்கமா: ।

nirdagdhapakṣō gṛdhrō'ham
gatavīryaḥ plavaṅgamāḥ ।
vāṅmātrēṇa tu rāmasya
kariṣyē sāhyamuttamam ॥
I am an eagle with no wings
and my power is a thing of the past.
However, O Vānaras, I shall
be of great help to Rāma,
though only with my words.

jānāmi vāruṇānlōkān
viṣṇōstraivikramānapi ।
dēvāsuravimardāṃṡca
hyamṛtasya ca manthanam ॥
I have the knowledge of (many things)
from the world of Varuṇa, to the
three worlds that Vishṇu measured,
to the battle between Dēvas and Asuras
to the churning of (the ocean) for Amṛta.

கர்தவ்யம் ப்ரதமம் மயா ।

kartavyaṃ prathamaṃ mayā ।
jarayā ca hṛtaṃ tējaḥ
prāṇāṡca ṡithilā mama ॥
Though old age has sapped my strength,
and my body is worn out,
this task of Rāma is my first priority.

நிலயம் தஸ்ய ரக்ஷஸ: ।

அத்யாஸ்தே நகரீம் லங்காம்
ராவணோ நாம ராக்ஷஸ: ॥
ṡrūyatāṃ mē kathayatō
nilayaṃ tasya rakṣasaḥ ।
putrō viṡravasassākṣāt
bhrātā vaiṡravaṇasya ca ।
adhyāstē nagarīṃ laṅkām
rāvaṇō nāma rākṣasaḥ ॥
And listen, I will tell you about
the abode of that Rākshasa.
That Rākshasa by name Rāvaṇa is none other than
the son of Viṡravasu and brother of Vaiṡravaṇa,
who holds the city of Laṅkā under his command.

There is an island in the ocean
at a distance of a full
one hundred Yōjanas from here,
in which the city of Laṅkā
built by Viṡwakarma is situated.

Its gateways are full of gold.
Its gold platforms are amazing.
Its imposing mansions of golden glean
are wrought beautifully.
It is surrounded by huge ramparts
that shine like the sun.

தீநா கௌஸேயவாஸிநீ ।

ஜநகஸ்யாத்மஜாம் ராஜ்ஞ:
தஸ்யாம் த்ரக்ஷ்யத மைதிலீம் ॥
tasyāṃ vasati vaidēhī
dīnā kauṡēyavāsinī ।
rāvaṇāntaḥpurē ruddhā
rākṣasībhissurakṣitā ।
janakasyātmajāṃ rājñaḥ
tasyāṃ drakṣyatha maithilīm ॥
In that city lives the miserable Vaidēhi
clad in silk, confined to the
inner apartments of Rāvaṇa,
and well-guarded by the Rākshasis.
You can see Maithili, the daughter
of king Janaka there.

ஆஸாத்ய தக்ஷிணம் தீரம்
ததோ த்ரக்ஷ்யத ராவணம் ।
தத்ரைவ த்வரிதா: க்ஷிப்ரம்
விக்ரமத்வம் ப்லவங்கமா: ।
ஜ்ஞாநேந கலு பஸ்யாமி
த்ருஷ்ட்வா ப்ரத்யாகமிஷ்யத ॥
laṅkāyāmatha guptāyām
sāgarēṇa samantataḥ ।
samprāpya sāgarasyāntam
sampūrṇaṃ ṡatayōjanam ।
āsādya dakṣiṇaṃ tīram
tatō dra kṣyatha rāvaṇam ।
tatraiva tvaritāḥ kṣipram
vikramadhvaṃ plavaṅgamāḥ ।
jñānēna khalu paṡyāmi
dṛṣṭvā pratyāgamiṣyatha ॥
Reaching Laṅkā, which is protected
by the ocean on all sides,
after going for a full one hundred Yōjanas
and landing on the southern shore,
you can see Rāvaṇa there.
O Vānaras! You shall then hasten
to show your prowess immediately.
I know enough to tell that
you will be able to see (her) and come back.

பாஸாஸ்த்ருதீயம் கச்சந்தி
க்ரௌஞ்சாஸ்ச குரரைஸ்ஸஹ ।
ஸ்யேநாஸ்சதுர்தம் கச்சந்தி
க்ருத்ரா கச்சந்தி பஞ்சமம் ॥
ādyaḥ panthāḥ kuliṅgānām
yē cānyē dhānyajīvinaḥ ।
dvitīyō balibhōjānām
yē ca vṛkṣaphalāṡinaḥ ।
bhāsāstṛtīyaṃ gacchanti
krauñcāṡca kuraraissaha ।
ṡyēnāṡcaturthaṃ gacchanti
gṛdhrā gacchanti pa ñcamam ॥
At the first (lowest) of altitudes fly
birds like Kuliṅga that feed on grain.
At the next level fly birds like crows
that feed on the fruits of trees.
At the third level fly birds like
Bhāsas, Krouncas and Kuraras.
Falcons fly at the fourth level,
and the eagles at the fifth.

ரூபயௌவநஸாலிநாம் ।

ஸர்வேஷாம் வாநரர்ஷபா: ॥
balavīryōpapannānām
rūpayauvanaṡālinām ।
ṣaṣṭhastu panthā haṃsānām
vainatēyagatiḥ parā ।
vainatēyācca nō janma
sarvēṣāṃ vānararṣabhāḥ ॥
The beautiful and young swans,
endowed with strength and vigor
take the path at the sixth level.
Higher than that is the path of Vainatēya.
All of us are the descendants of Vainatēya.

யேந ஸ்ம பிஸிதாஸிநா: | ।

garhitaṃ tu kṛtaṃ karma
yēna sma piṡitāṡināḥ | ।
pratikāryam ca mē tasya
vairaṃ bhrātṛkṛtaṃ bhavēt ॥
What the flesh eater has done is despicable.
I should avenge his attack on my brother.

rāvaṇaṃ jānakīṃ tathā ।
asmākamapi sauparṇam
divyaṃ cakṣurbalaṃ tathā ॥
I can see Rāvaṇa and Jānaki right from here,
for I am endowed with divine sight
as well as the strength of Garuḍa.

நிஸர்கேண ச வாநரா: ।
ஆயோஜநஸதாத்ஸாக்ராத்

nisargēṇa ca vānarāḥ ।
āyōjanaṡatātsāgrāt
vayaṃ paṡyāma nityaṡaḥ ॥
O Vānaras! Because of our nature
and the strength from our food
we can always see very easily
beyond a distance of thousand Yōjanas.

நிஸர்கேண ச தூரத: ।

nisargēṇa ca dūrataḥ ।
vihitā pādamūlē tu
vṛttiṡcaraṇayōdhinām ॥
Nature made it that
we find our prey far afield,
while it arranged food right at the feet
for those that fight with their feet.

laṅghanē lavaṇāmbhasaḥ ।
abhigamya tu vaidēhīm
samṛddhārthā gamiṣyatha ॥
Think of some way of crossing
this body of salty water.
You shall meet Vaidēhi and
return with your mission fulfilled.

bhavadbhirvaruṇālayam ।

svargatasya mahātmanaḥ ॥
I would like you to take me to the home of Varuṇa.
I shall offer water libations to that Mahātma,
my brother, who ascended to heaven.

tīrē nadanadīpatēḥ ।
nirdagdhapakṣaṃ sampātim
vānarāssumahaujasaḥ ।
taṃ punaḥ prāpayitvā ca
taṃ dēṡaṃ patagēṡvaram ।
babhūvurvānarā hṛṣṭāḥ
pravṛttimupalabhya tē ॥
Thereupon those Vānaras of immense strength
took Sampāti, whose wings had been burnt,
to the shore of (the sea), the lord of the
east-flowing as well as west-flowing streams,
and then brought him back and
they felt happy getting the news.

I covered him with my wings
out of love and concern for him.

Rakshasa lives, if you happen to know.

be of great help to Rāma,

three worlds that Vishṇu measured,
to the battle between Dēvas and Asuras
to the churning of (the ocean) for Amṛta.

adhyāstē nagarīṃ laṅkām

And listen, I will tell you about
the abode of that Rākshasa.
That Rākshasa by name Rāvaṇa is none other than
the son of Viṡravasu and brother of Vaiṡravaṇa,
who holds the city of Laṅkā under his command.

that shine like the sun.

rākṣasībhissurakṣitā ।
janakasyātmajāṃ rājñaḥ
tasyāṃ drakṣyatha maithilīm ॥
In that city lives the miserable Vaidēhi
clad in silk, confined to the
inner apartments of Rāvaṇa,
and well-guarded by the Rākshasis.
You can see Maithili, the daughter
of king Janaka there.

tatō dra kṣyatha rāvaṇam ।
tatraiva tvaritāḥ kṣipram
vikramadhvaṃ plavaṅgamāḥ ।
jñānēna khalu paṡyāmi
dṛṣṭvā pratyāgamiṣyatha ॥
Reaching Laṅkā, which is protected
by the ocean on all sides,
after going for a full one hundred Yōjanas
and landing on the southern shore,
you can see Rāvaṇa there.
O Vānaras! You shall then hasten
to show your prowess immediately.
I know enough to tell that
you will be able to see (her) and come back.

க்ருத்ரா கச்சந்தி பஞ்சமம் ॥
ādyaḥ panthāḥ kuliṅgānām
yē cānyē dhānyajīvinaḥ ।
dvitīyō balibhōjānām
yē ca vṛkṣaphalāṡinaḥ ।
bhāsāstṛtīyaṃ gacchanti
krauñcāṡca kuraraissaha ।
ṡyēnāṡcaturthaṃ gacchanti
gṛdhrā gacchanti pa ñcamam ॥
At the first (lowest) of altitudes fly
birds like Kuliṅga that feed on grain.
At the next level fly birds like crows
that feed on the fruits of trees.
At the third level fly birds like
Bhāsas, Krouncas and Kuraras.
Falcons fly at the fourth level,
and the eagles at the fifth.

balavīryōpapannānām
rūpayauvanaṡālinām ।
ṣaṣṭhastu panthā haṃsānām
vainatēyagatiḥ parā ।
vainatēyācca nō janma
sarvēṣāṃ vānararṣabhāḥ ॥
The beautiful and young swans,
endowed with strength and vigor
take the path at the sixth level.
Higher than that is the path of Vainatēya.
All of us are the descendants of Vainatēya.

What the flesh eater has done is despicable.
I should avenge his attack on my brother.

I can see Rāvaṇa and Jānaki right from here,
for I am endowed with divine sight
as well as the strength of Garuḍa.

O Vānaras! Because of our nature
and the strength from our food
we can always see very easily
beyond a distance of thousand Yōjanas.

Nature made it that
we find our prey far afield,
while it arranged food right at the feet
for those that fight with their feet.

Think of some way of crossing
this body of salty water.
You shall meet Vaidēhi and
return with your mission fulfilled.

my brother, who ascended to heaven.

taṃ dēṡaṃ patagēṡvaram ।
babhūvurvānarā hṛṣṭāḥ
pravṛttimupalabhya tē ॥
Thereupon those Vānaras of immense strength
took Sampāti, whose wings had been burnt,
to the shore of (the sea), the lord of the
east-flowing as well as west-flowing streams,
and then brought him back and
they felt happy getting the news.
