Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 46
In this Sarga, after the Vānara chiefs left searching for Seetā, Rāma asks Sugreeva, ‘How did you come to know about the entire earth?’
Sugreeva then explains how he was chased by Vāli and how he ran all over the earth trying to escape from him, before settling down in a cave on the Ṛshyamūka mountain, where Vāli would never dare to enter because of the curse placed on him by Mataṅga.
4.46.1 கதேஷு வாநரேந்த்ரேஷு
ராமஸ்ஸுக்ரீவமப்ரவீத் ।
கதம் பவாந்விஜாநீதே
ஸர்வம் வை மண்டலம் புவ: ॥
gatēṣu vānarēndrēṣu
rāmassugrīvamabravīt ।
kathaṃ bhavānvijānītē
sarvaṃ vai maṇḍalaṃ bhuvaḥ ॥
After the chiefs of the Vānaras had left,
Rāma asked Sugreeva, ‘How did you
come to know about the entire earth?’
4.46.2 ஸுக்ரீவஸ்து ததோ ராமம்
உவாச ப்ரணதாத்மவாந் ।
ஸ்ரூயதாம் ஸர்வமாக்யாஸ்யே
விஸ்தரேண வசோ மம ॥
sugrīvastu tatō rāmam
uvāca praṇatātmavān ।
ṡrūyatāṃ sarvamākhyāsyē
vistarēṇa vacō mama ॥
Then Sugreeva, bowing to him in reverence, said:
‘May my words be heard, as I tell everything in detail’!
4.46.3-4 யதா து துந்துபிம் நாம
தாநவம் மஹிஷாக்ருதிம் ।
பரிகாலயதே வாலீ
மலயம் ப்ரதி பர்வதம் ।
ததா விவேஸ மஹிஷோ
மலயஸ்ய குஹாம் ப்ரதி ।
விவேஸ வாலீ தத்ராபி
மலயம் தஜ்ஜிகாம்ஸயா ॥
yadā tu dundubhiṃ nāma
dānavaṃ mahiṣākṛtim ।
parikālayatē vālī
malayaṃ prati parvatam ।
tadā vivēṡa mahiṣō
malayasya guhāṃ prati ।
vivēṡa vālī tatrāpi
malayaṃ tajjighāṃsayā ॥
When Vali chased Dundhubhi,
the Dānava with a buffalo’s body,
towards the Malaya mountain,
the buffalo entered the cave in it.
And Vali too entered the cave to kill him.
4.46.5 ததோऽஹம் தத்ர நிக்ஷிப்தோ
குஹாத்வாரி விநீதவத் ।
ந ச நிஷ்க்ராமதே வாலீ
ததா ஸம்வத்ஸரே கதே ॥
tatō'haṃ tatra nikṣiptō
guhādvāri vinītavat ।
na ca niṣkrāmatē vālī
tadā saṃvatsarē gatē ॥
Then, I, the obedient one,
was ordered to wait at the entrance.
A whole year passed, but Vāli did not come out.
4.46.6 தத: க்ஷதஜவேகேந
ஆபுபூரே ததா பிலம் ।
ததஹம் விஸ்மிதோ த்ருஷ்ட்வா
ப்ராத்ருஸோகவிஷார்தித: ॥
tataḥ kṣatajavēgēna
āpupūrē tadā bilam ।
tadahaṃ vismitō dṛṣṭvā
bhrātṛṡōkaviṣārditaḥ ॥
Then that cave was filled with stream of blood.
I was shocked to see the blood
and was harrowed by grief for my brother,
like one would be by a poisonous sting.
4.46.7-8a அதாஹம் கதபுத்திஸ்து
ஸுவ்யக்தம் நிஹதோ குரு: ।
ஸிலா பர்வதஸங்காஸா
பிலத்வாரி மயா க்ருதா ।
அஸக்நுவந்நிஷ்க்ரமிதும்
மஹிஷோ விநஸிஷ்யதி ॥
athāhaṃ gatabuddhistu
suvyaktaṃ nihatō guruḥ ।
ṡilā parvatasaṅkāṡā
biladvāri mayā kṛtā ।
aṡaknuvanniṣkramitum
mahiṣō vinaṡiṣyati ॥
Then thinking to myself that my
elder brother was clearly killed,
I closed the entrance of the cave
with a mountainous boulder,
making sure that the buffalo
would die, unable to come out.
4.46.8b-9 ததோऽஹமாகாம் கிஷ்கிந்தாம்
நிராஸஸ்தஸ்ய ஜீவிதே ।
ராஜ்யம் ச ஸுமஹத்ப்ராப்ய
தாராம்ஸ்ச ருமயா ஸஹ ।
மித்ரைஸ்ச ஸஹிதஸ்தத்ர
வஸாமி விகதஜ்வர: ॥
tatō'hamāgāṃ kiṣkindhām
nirāṡastasya jīvitē ।
rājyaṃ ca sumahatprāpya
tārāṃṡca rumayā saha ।
mitraiṡca sahitastatra
vasāmi vigatajvaraḥ ॥
Having lost all hope that he might still be alive,
I returned to Kishkindhā and acquired
the kingdom, and also Tārā and Ruma.
I lived there along with my friends
with no further worry.
4.46.10 ஆஜகாம ததோ வாலீ
ஹத்வா தம் தாநவர்ஷபம் ।
ததோऽஹமததாம் ராஜ்யம்
கௌரவாத்பயயந்த்ரித: ॥
ājagāma tatō vālī
hatvā taṃ dānavarṣabham ।
tatō'hamadadāṃ rājyam
gauravādbhayayantritaḥ ॥
Then came Vāli, having slain that bull among Dānavas.
Gripped with fear, and with due respect
I handed over the kingdom to back to him.
4.46.11 ஸ மாம் ஜிகாம்ஸுர்துஷ்டாத்மா
வாலீ ப்ரவ்யதிதேந்த்ரிய: ।
பரிகாலயதே க்ரோதாத்
தாவந்தம் ஸசிவைஸ்ஸஹ ॥
sa māṃ jighāṃsurduṣṭātmā
vālī pravyathitēndriyaḥ ।
parikālayatē krōdhāt
dhāvantaṃ sacivaissaha ॥
With each of his senses caught in a rage,
Vāli turned wretched and wanted to kill me.
He chased me as I ran away along with my ministers.
4.46.12 ததோऽஹம் வாலிநா தேந
ஸாऽநுபத்த: ப்ரதாவித: ।
நதீஸ்ச விவிதா: பஸ்யந்
வநாநி நகராணி ச ॥
tatō'haṃ vālinā tēna
sā'nubaddhaḥ pradhāvitaḥ ।
nadīṡca vividhāḥ paṡyan
vanāni nagarāṇi ca ॥
While I ran thus, being chased by Vāli,
I saw many rivers, Vanas and cities.
4.46.13 ஆதர்ஸதலஸங்காஸா
ததோ வை ப்ருதிவீ மயா ।
அலாதசக்ரப்ரதிமா
த்ருஷ்டா கோஷ்பதவத்க்ருதா ॥
ādarṡatalasaṅkāṡā
tatō vai pṛthivī mayā ।
alātacakrapratimā
dṛṣṭā gōṣpadavatkṛtā ॥
It seemed as if I reduced the earth
to the surface of a mirror,
to the size of a circle
made by a whirling firebrand
and to the size of hoof-print of a cow.
4.46.14 பூர்வாம் திஸம் ததோ கத்வா
பஸ்யாமி விவிதாந் த்ருமாந் ।
பர்வதாந் ஸதரீந் ரம்யாந்
ஸராம்ஸி விவிதாநி ச ॥
pūrvāṃ diṡaṃ tatō gatvā
paṡyāmi vividhān drumān ।
parvatān sadarīn ramyān
sarāṃsi vividhāni ca ॥
I went in the easterly direction
seeing many a tree and mountain
and many a lovely stream and lake.
4.46.15 உதயம் தத்ர பஸ்யாமி
பர்வதம் தாதுமண்டிதம் ।
க்ஷீரோதம் ஸாகரம் சைவ
நித்யமப்ஸரஸாலயம் ॥
udayaṃ tatra paṡyāmi
parvataṃ dhātumaṇḍitam ।
kṣīrōdaṃ sāgaraṃ caiva
nityamapsarasālayam ॥
There I saw the mountain of the rising sun
glistening with minerals and also
the Milky Ocean, a constant resort of the Apsaras.
4.46.16-17 பரிகால்யமாநஸ்ததா
வாலிநாऽபித்ருதோஹ்வம் ।
புநராவ்ருத்ய ஸஹஸா
ப்ரஸ்திதோऽஹம் ததா விபோ ।
திஸஸ்தஸ்யாஸ்ததோ பூய:
ப்ரஸ்திதோ தக்ஷிணாம் திஸம் ।
விந்த்யபாதபஸங்கீர்ணாம்
சந்தநத்ருமஸோபிதாம் ॥
parikālyamānastadā
vālinā'bhidrutōhvam ।
punarāvṛtya sahasā
prasthitō'haṃ tadā vibhō ।
diṡastasyāstatō bhūyaḥ
prasthitō dakṣiṇāṃ diṡam ।
vindhyapādapasaṅkīrṇām
candanadrumaṡōbhitām ॥
My lord! Chased by Vāli, I kept running,
retracing my steps and then heading
in the southerly direction that is adorned
with the thickets of trees of the Vindhya mountains
and by many sandal trees.
4.46.18 த்ருமஸைலாந்தரே பஸ்யந்
பூயோ தக்ஷிணதோऽபராம் ।
அபராம் ச திஸம் ப்ராப்தா
வாலிநா ஸமபித்ருத: ॥
drumaṡailāntarē paṡyan
bhūyō dakṣiṇatō'parām ।
aparāṃ ca diṡaṃ prāptā
vālinā samabhidrutaḥ ॥
While trying to find a way out from the middle
of those trees and mountains in the south,
I ended up in the westerly direction, chased by Vāli.
4.46.19 ஸம்பஸ்யந்விவிதாந்தேஸாந்
அஸ்தம் ச கிரிஸத்தமம் ।
ப்ராப்ய சாஸ்தம் கிரிஸ்ரேஷ்டம்
உத்தரம் ஸம்ப்ரதாவித: ॥
sampaṡyanvividhāndēṡān
astaṃ ca girisattamam ।
prāpya cāstaṃ giriṡrēṣṭham
uttaraṃ sampradhāvitaḥ ॥
Going West, seeing various regions,
running towards the setting mountain
and finally reaching the setting mountain,
I then ran towards the north.
4.46.20 ஹிமவந்தம் ச மேரும் ச
ஸமுத்ரம் ச ததோத்தரம் ।
யதா ந விந்தே ஸரணம்
வாலிநா ஸமபித்ருத: ।
ததா மாம் புத்திஸம்பந்நோ
ஹநூமாந்வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ॥
himavantaṃ ca mēruṃ ca
samudraṃ ca tathōttaram ।
yadā na vindē ṡaraṇam
vālinā samabhidrutaḥ ।
tadā māṃ buddhisampannō
hanūmānvākyamabravīt ॥
I ran from Himālayas to Mēru to the Northern Ocean.
When I found no refuge as I was chased by Vāli,
the sagacious Hanumān said these words:
4.46.21-22 இதாநீம் மே ஸ்ம்ருதம் ராஜந்
யதா வாலீ ஹரீஸ்வர: ।
மதங்கேந ததா ஸப்தோ
ஹ்யஸ்மிந்நாஸ்ரமமண்டலே ।
ப்ரவிஸேத்யதி வை வாலீ
மூர்தாऽஸ்ய ஸததா பவேத் ।
தத்ர வாஸஸ்ஸுகோऽஸ்மாகம்
நிருத்விக்நோ பவிஷ்யதி ॥
idānīṃ mē smṛtaṃ rājan
yathā vālī harīṡvaraḥ ।
mataṅgēna tadā ṡaptō
hyasminnāṡramamaṇḍalē ।
praviṡēdyadi vai vālī
mūrdhā'sya ṡatadhā bhavēt ।
tatra vāsassukhō'smākam
nirudvignō bhaviṣyati ॥
I now remember, O King, how Vāli
was once cursed by Mataṅga, saying,
“If Vāli was to ever enter these Āṡrama grounds,
his head shall break into a hundred pieces.”
Therefore, let us go and live there,
and we will have nothing to fear anymore.
4.46.23 தத: பர்வதமாஸாத்ய
ருஷ்யமூகம் ந்ருபாத்மஜ ।
ந விவேஸ ததா வாலீ
மதங்கஸ்ய பயாத்ததா ॥
tataḥ parvatamāsādya
ṛṣyamūkaṃ nṛpātmaja ।
na vivēṡa tadā vālī
mataṅgasya bhayāttadā ॥
Thereupon, O prince, I went to the Ṛshyamūka mountain,
and Vāli did not come there, for fear of Mataṅga.
4.46.24 ஏவம் மயா ததா ராஜந்
ப்ரத்யக்ஷமுபலக்ஷிதம் ।
ப்ருதிவீமண்டலம் க்ருத்ஸ்நம்
குஹாமஸ்யாகதஸ்தத: ॥
ēvaṃ mayā tadā rājan
pratyakṣamupalakṣitam ।
pṛthivīmaṇḍalaṃ kṛtsnam
guhāmasyāgatastataḥ ॥
That was when I came to see
the entire earth with my own eyes.
Then onwards, I was bound to the cave.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
கிஷ்கிந்தாகாண்டே ஷட்சத்வாரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
kiṣkindhākāṇḍē ṣaṭcatvāriṃṡassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the forty sixth Sarga
in Kishkindhā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
