Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 34
In this Sarga, upon seeing Lakshmaṇa, the scared Sugreeva springs up from his seat and his womenfolk do the same. Lakshmaṇa expresses his rage to Sugreeva. He accuses him of dalliance, ungratefulness and false promises. He threatens to kill him if he does not fulfill his promise.
4.34.1 தமப்ரதிஹதம் க்ருத்தம்
ப்ரவிஷ்டம் புருஷர்ஷபம் ।
ஸுக்ரீவோ லக்ஷ்மணம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
பபூவ வ்யதிதேந்த்ரிய: ॥
tamapratihataṃ kruddham
praviṣṭaṃ puruṣarṣabham ।
sugrīvō lakṣmaṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā
babhūva vyathitēndriyaḥ ॥
Seeing that enraged bull among men
come in with none daring to obstruct him,
Sugreeva’s senses fell in a turmoil.
4.34.2-3 க்ருத்தம் நிஸ்ஸ்வஸமாநம் தம்
ப்ரதீப்தமிவ தேஜஸா ।
ப்ராதுர்வ்யஸநஸந்தப்தம்
த்ருஷ்ட்வா தஸரதாத்மஜம் ।
உத்பபாத ஹரிஸ்ரேஷ்டோ
ஹித்வா ஸௌவர்ணமாஸநம் ।
மஹாந்மஹேந்த்ரஸ்ய யதா
ஸ்வலங்க்ருத இவ த்வஜ: ॥
kruddhaṃ niṡṡvasamānaṃ tam
pradīptamiva tējasā ।
bhrāturvyasanasantaptam
dṛṣṭvā daṡarathātmajam ।
utpapāta hariṡrēṣṭhō
hitvā sauvarṇamāsanam ।
mahānmahēndrasya yathā
svalaṅkṛta iva dhvajaḥ ॥
On seeing Daṡaratha’s son breathe heavily in wrath,
blazing like a fire with his power and
burning with grief at his brother’s suffering,
that chief of Vānaras sprang from his golden seat
like the great and fully-decorated flagstaff of Mahēndra.
4.34.4 உத்பதந்தமநூத்பேதூ
ருமாப்ரப்ருதய: ஸ்த்ரிய: ।
ஸுக்ரீவம் ககநே பூர்ணம்
சந்த்ரம் தாராகணா இவ ॥
utpatantamanūtpētū
rumāprabhṛtayaḥ striyaḥ ।
sugrīvaṃ gaganē pūrṇaṃ
candraṃ tārāgaṇā iva ॥
Ruma and the other women also got up
in step with Sugreeva as
stars follow the full moon in the sky.
4.34.5 ஸம்ரக்தநயந: ஸ்ரீமாந்
ஸம்சசார க்ருதாஞ்ஜலி: ।
பபூவாவஸ்திதஸ்தத்ர
கல்பவ்ருக்ஷோ மஹாநிவ ॥
saṃraktanayanaḥ ṡrīmān
saṃcacāra kṛtāñjaliḥ ।
babhūvāvasthitastatra
kalpavṛkṣō mahāniva ॥
The blessed Sugreeva, his eyes bloodshot
moved closer and stood there with
his palms joined in supplication,
like the great Kalpa Vṛksha.
Kalpa Vṛksha is the celestial wish-granting tree.
4.34.6 ருமாத்விதீயம் ஸுக்ரீவம்
நாரீமத்யகதம் ஸ்திதம் ।
அப்ரவீல்லக்ஷ்மண: க்ருத்த:
ஸதாரம் ஸஸிநம் யதா ॥
rumādvitīyaṃ sugrīvam
nārīmadhyagataṃ sthitam ।
abravīllakṣmaṇaḥ kruddhaḥ
satāraṃ ṡaṡinaṃ yathā ॥
And the infuriated Lakshmaṇa addressed Sugreeva,
who was surrounded by Ruma and other women
like the moon by the stars:
4.34.7 ஸத்த்வாபிஜநஸம்பந்ந:
ஸாநுக்ரோஸோ ஜிதேந்த்ரிய: ।
க்ருதஜ்ஞஸ்ஸத்யவாதீ ச
ராஜா லோகே மஹீயதே ॥
sattvābhijanasampannaḥ
sānukrōṡō jitēndriyaḥ ।
kṛtajñassatyavādī ca
rājā lōkē mahīyatē ॥
Only a king who is powerful, grateful,
and compassionate, with mastery over his senses,
with a rich retinue of loving people,
is held in high regard in this world.
4.34.8 யஸ்து ராஜா ஸ்திதோऽதர்மே
மித்ராணாமுபகாரிணாம் ।
மித்யா ப்ரதிஜ்ஞாம் குருதே
கோ ந்ருஸம்ஸதரஸ்தத: ॥
yastu rājā sthitō'dharmē
mitrāṇāmupakāriṇām ।
mithyā pratijñāṃ kurutē
kō nṛṡaṃsatarastataḥ ॥
Who can be more terrible than a king
who is divorced to Dharma and who makes
false promises to friends who have helped him?
4.34.9 ஸதமஸ்வாந்ருதே ஹந்தி
ஸஹஸ்ரம் து கவாந்ருதே ।
ஆத்மாநம் ஸ்வஜநம் ஹந்தி
புருஷ: புருஷாந்ருதே ॥
ṡatamaṡvānṛtē hanti
sahasraṃ tu gavānṛtē ।
ātmānaṃ svajanaṃ hanti
puruṣaḥ puruṣānṛtē ॥
Telling a lie in the matter of a horse
is as sinful as killing hundred horses.
Telling a lie in the matter of a cow
is as sinful as killing thousand cows.
Telling a lie in the matter of a man
is as sinful as killing all of
one’s kin including oneself.
4.34.10 பூர்வம் க்ருதார்தோ மித்ராணாம்
ந தத்ப்ரதிகரோதி ய: ।
க்ருதக்நஸ்ஸர்வபூதாநாம்
ஸ வத்ய: ப்லவகேஸ்வர ॥
pūrvaṃ kṛtārthō mitrāṇām
na tatpratikarōti yaḥ ।
kṛtaghnassarvabhūtānām
sa vadhyaḥ plavagēṡvara ॥
The ingrate who does not return the favor
after having had his object fulfilled,
deserves death at the hands of
every creature, O Lord of the Vānaras!
4.34.11 கீதோऽயம் ப்ரஹ்மணா ஸ்லோக:
ஸர்வலோகநமஸ்க்ருத: ।
த்ருஷ்ட்வா க்ருதக்நம் க்ருத்தேந
தந்நிபோத ப்லவங்கம ॥
gītō'yaṃ brahmaṇā ṡlōkaḥ
sarvalōkanamaskṛtaḥ ।
dṛṣṭvā kṛtaghnaṃ kruddhēna
tannibōdha plavaṅgama ॥
O Vānara, You shall know this Ṡlōka
that was uttered by Brahma
who is saluted by all the worlds,
when he saw a an ungrateful person:
4.34.12 கோக்நேசைவ ஸுராபே ச
சோரே பக்நவ்ரதே ததா ।
நிஷ்க்ருதிர்விஹிதா ஸத்பி:
க்ருதக்நே நாஸ்தி நிஷ்க்ருதி: ॥
gōghnēcaiva surāpē ca
cōrē bhagnavratē tathā ।
niṣkṛtirvihitā sadbhiḥ
kṛtaghnē nāsti niṣkṛtiḥ ॥
There is expiation even for a thief, a drunkard
or one who breaks his vow or kills a cow,
but none for the person who is ungrateful.
4.34.13 அநார்யஸ்த்வம் க்ருதக்நஸ்ச
மித்யாவாதீ ச வாநர ।
பூர்வம் க்ருதார்தோ ராமஸ்ய
ந தத்ப்ரதிகரோஷி யத் ॥
anāryastvaṃ kṛtaghnaṡca
mithyāvādī ca vānara ।
pūrvaṃ kṛtārthō rāmasya
na tatpratikarōṣi yat ॥
You are ignoble, ungrateful and a liar, O Vānara,
for, you are not repaying Rāma,
because of whom your object was accomplished.
4.34.14 நநு நாம க்ருதார்தேந
த்வயா ராமஸ்ய வாநர ।
ஸீதாயா மார்கணே யத்ந:
கர்தவ்ய: க்ருதமிச்சதா ॥
nanu nāma kṛtārthēna
tvayā rāmasya vānara ।
sītāyā mārgaṇē yatnaḥ
kartavyaḥ kṛtamicchatā ॥
Should you not now, having accomplished your object
because of Rāma, busy yourself with the search for Seetā?
4.34.15 ஸ த்வம் க்ராம்யேஷு போகேஷு
ஸக்தோ மித்யாப்ரதிஸ்ரவ: ।
ந த்வாம் ராமோ விஜாநீதே
ஸர்பம் மண்டூகராவிணம் ॥
sa tvaṃ grāmyēṣu bhōgēṣu
saktō mithyāpratiṡravaḥ ।
na tvāṃ rāmō vijānītē
sarpaṃ maṇḍūkarāviṇam ॥
You of false promises, are indulged
in sporting in the company of women.
Rāma did not know that you are
a serpent imitating the croak of a frog.
4.34.16 மஹாபாகேந ராமேண
பாப: கருணவேதிநா ।
ஹரீணாம் ப்ராபிதோ ராஜ்யம்
த்வம் துராத்மா மஹாத்மநா ॥
mahābhāgēna rāmēṇa
pāpaḥ karuṇavēdinā ।
harīṇāṃ prāpitō rājyam
tvaṃ durātmā mahātmanā ॥
You, an evil sinner, attained the kingdom of Vānaras,
because of the kindness of the blessed Mahātma Rāma.
4.34.17 க்ருதம் சேந்நாபிஜாநீஷே
ராகவஸ்ய மஹாத்மந: ।
ஸத்யஸ்த்வம் நிஸிதைர்பாவா:
ஹதோ த்ரக்ஷ்யஸி வாலிநம் ॥
kṛtaṃ cēnnābhijānīṣē
rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ ।
sadyastvaṃ niṡitairbhāvāḥ
hatō drakṣyasi vālinam ॥
If you cannot appreciate what
Mahātma Rāma has done for you,
you shall, killed by sharp arrows, see Vāli.
4.34.18 ந ச ஸங்குசித: பந்தா
யேந வாலீ ஹதோ கத: ।
ஸமயே திஷ்ட ஸுக்ரீவ
மா வாலிபதமந்வகா: ॥
na ca saṅkucitaḥ panthā
yēna vālī hatō gataḥ ।
samayē tiṣṭha sugrīva
mā vālipathamanvagāḥ ॥
The road that the slain
Vāli took, is not yet closed;
stick to your compact Sugreeva,
do not follow the path of Vāli!
4.34.19 ந நூநமிக்ஷ்வாகுவரஸ்ய கார்முகா
ஸராம்ஸ்ச தாந் வஜ்ர ஸந்நிபாந் ।
ததஸ்ஸுகம் நாம நிஷேவஸே ஸுகீ ।
ந ராமகார்யம் மநஸாऽப்யவேக்ஷஸே ॥
na nūnamikṣvākuvarasya kārmukā
ṡarāṃṡca tān vajra sannibhān ।
tatassukhaṃ nāma niṣēvasē sukhī ।
na rāmakāryaṃ manasā'pyavēkṣasē ॥
Evidently you have not known the arrows
that fly from the bow of the foremost of the Ikshwākus
that strike like a thunderbolt,
or else you would not be relaxed like this,
absorbed in pleasures, your mind
completely turned away from Rāma’s work.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
கிஷ்கிந்தாகாண்டே சதுஸ்த்ரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
kiṣkindhākāṇḍē catustriṃṡassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the thirty fourth Sarga
in Kishkindhā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
