    பஹ்வீஸ்ச விவிதாகாரா
    ரூபயௌவநகர்விதா: ।
    ஸ்த்ரியஸ்ஸுக்ரீவபவநே
    ததர்ஸ ஸ மஹாபல: ॥
    bahvīṡca vividhākārā
    rūpayauvanagarvitāḥ ।
    striyassugrīvabhavanē
    dadarṡa sa mahābalaḥ ॥
    And he of immense strength
    saw in Sugreeva’s household
    many women of great figure
    flaunting their youth and great looks.
    த்ருஷ்ட்வாऽபிஜநஸம்பந்நா
    தத்ரமால்யக்ருதஸ்ரஜ: ।
    வரமால்யக்ருதவ்யக்ரா
    பூஷணோத்தமபூஷிதா: ।
    நாத்ருப்தாந்நாபி சாவ்யக்ராத்
    நாநுதாத்தபரிச்சதாந் ।
    ஸுக்ரீவாநுசராம்ஸ்சாபி
    லக்ஷயாமாஸ லக்ஷ்மண: ॥
    dṛṣṭvā'bhijanasampannā
    tatramālyakṛtasrajaḥ ।
    varamālyakṛtavyagrā
    bhūṣaṇōttamabhūṣitāḥ ।
    nātṛptānnāpi cāvyagrāt
    nānudāttaparicchadān ।
    sugrīvānucarāṃṡcāpi
    lakṣayāmāsa lakṣmaṇaḥ ॥
    He saw women of high birth
    wearing garlands of beautiful flowers,
    adorned with splendid jewels and
    busy weaving garlands of rare flowers.
    Lakshmaṇa could see no retainer of Sugreeva
    who was discontented, not zealous, or
    who was not adorned exquisitely.


    கூஜிதம் நூபுராணாம் ச
    காஞ்சீநாம் நிஸ்ஸ்வநம் ததா ।
    ஸ நிஸம்ய தத ஸ்ரீமாந்
    ஸௌமித்ரிர்லஜ்ஜிதோऽபவத் ॥
    kūjitaṃ nūpurāṇāṃ ca
    kāñcīnāṃ nissvanaṃ tathā ।
    sa niṡamya tata ṡrīmān
    saumitrirlajjitō'bhavat ॥
    The blessed Sowmitri blushed hearing
    the tinkling of the anklets and
    the jingle of the waist bands.
    ரோஷவேகப்ரகுபித:
    ஸ்ருத்வா சாபரணஸ்வநம் ।
    சகார ஜ்யாஸ்வநம் வீரோ
    திஸஸ்ஸப்தேந பூரயந் ॥
    rōṣavēgaprakupitaḥ
    ṡrutvā cābharaṇasvanam ।
    cakāra jyāsvanaṃ vīrō
    diṡaṡṡabdēna pūrayan ॥
    Hearing the tinkling of the ornaments,
    that Veera became infuriated
    and twanged his bow-string,
    whose sound reverberated in all directions.
    சாரித்ரேண மஹாபாஹு:
    உபக்ருஷ்ட: ஸ லக்ஷ்மண: ।
    தஸ்தாவேகாந்தமாஸ்ரித்ய
    ராமஸோகஸமந்வித: ॥
    cāritrēṇa mahābāhuḥ
    upakṛṣṭaḥ sa lakṣmaṇaḥ ।
    tasthāvēkāntamāṡritya
    rāmaṡōkasamanvitaḥ ॥
    Then Lakshmaṇa, soaked in grief by the plight of Rāma,
    moved to a secluded spot, dragged away by probity.
    தேந சாபஸ்வநேநாத
    ஸுக்ரீவ: ப்லவகாதிப: ।
    விஜ்ஞாயாऽகமநம் த்ரஸ்த:
    ஸ சசால வராஸநாத் ॥
    tēna cāpasvanēnātha
    sugrīvaḥ plavagādhipaḥ ।
    vijñāyā'gamanaṃ trastaḥ
    sa cacāla varāsanāt ॥
    Hearing that twang of the bowstring,
    Sugreeva, the lord of Vānaras,
    shivered seated on his couch, terribly scared.
    அங்கதேந யதா மஹ்யம்
    புரஸ்தாத்ப்ரதிவேதிதம் ।
    ஸுவ்யக்தமேஷ ஸம்ப்ராப்த:
    ஸௌமித்ரிர்ப்ராத்ருவத்ஸல: ॥
    aṅgadēna yathā mahyam
    purastātprativēditam ।
    suvyaktamēṣa samprāptaḥ
    saumitrirbhrātṛvatsalaḥ ॥
    ‘Clearly, it is Sowmitri, who loves his brother,
    that has come, as Aṅgada had already told me.’
    அங்கதேந ஸமாக்யதோ
    ஜ்யாஸ்வநேந ச வாநர: ।
    புபுதே லக்ஷ்மணம் ப்ராப்தம்
    முகம் சாஸ்யவ்யஸுஷ்யத ॥
    aṅgadēna samākhyatō
    jyāsvanēna ca vānaraḥ ।
    bubudhē lakṣmaṇaṃ prāptam
    mukhaṃ cāsyavyaṡuṣyata ॥
    The arrival of Lakshmaṇa, which was informed by Aṅgada
    and by the twang of the bowstring,
    made the face of that Vānara dry up.
    ததஸ்தாராம் ஹரிஸ்ரேஷ்ட:
    ஸுக்ரீவ: ப்ரியதர்ஸநாம் ।
    உவாச ஹிதமவ்யக்ர:
    த்ராஸஸம்ப்ராந்தமாநஸ: ॥
    tatastārāṃ hariṡrēṣṭhaḥ
    sugrīvaḥ priyadarṡanām ।
    uvāca hitamavyagraḥ
    trāsasambhrāntamānasaḥ ॥
    Gripped by fear and his mind highly agitated
    Sugreeva, the best among Vānaras,
    managing to put on an appearance of composure
    said these words to Tārā of pleasing appearance:
    கிம் நு ருட்காரணம் ஸுப்ரு
    ப்ரக்ருத்யா ம்ருதுமாநஸ: ।
    ஸரோஷ இவ ஸம்ப்ராப்தோ
    யேநாயம் ராகவாநுஜ: ॥
    kiṃ nu ruṭkāraṇaṃ subhru
    prakṛtyā mṛdumānasaḥ ।
    sarōṣa iva samprāptō
    yēnāyaṃ rāghavānujaḥ ॥
    O you of beautiful eyebrows!
    I wonder what the reason could be
    for the younger brother of Rāghava,
    who is gentle by nature,
    to come here in such a rage!
    கிம் பஸ்யஸி குமாரஸ்ய
    ரோஷஸ்தாநமநிந்திதே ।
    ந கல்வகாரணே கோபம்
    ஆஹரேந்நரபும்கவ: ॥
    kiṃ paṡyasi kumārasya
    rōṣasthānamaninditē ।
    na khalvakāraṇē kōpam
    āharēnnarapuṃgavaḥ ॥
    O blameless one! What reason would you
    see behind the wrath of this young man?
    The bull among men would not work himself up
    to be angry without a reason!
    யதஸ்ய க்ருதமஸ்மாபி:
    புத்யஸே கிஞ்சிதப்ரியம் ।
    தத்புத்த்யா ஸம்ப்ரதார்யாஸு
    க்ஷிப்ரமேவாபிதீயதாம் ॥
    yadasya kṛtamasmābhiḥ
    budhyasē kiñcidapriyam ।
    tadbuddhyā sampradhāryāṡu
    kṣipramēvābhidhīyatām ॥
    If you know of anything that I did
    which could be even remotely annoying,
    please think about it and let me know, quick.
    அதவா ஸ்வயமேவைநம்
    த்ரஷ்டுமர்ஹஸி பாமிநி ।
    வசநைஸ்ஸாந்த்வயுக்தைஸ்ச
    ப்ரஸாதயிதுமர்ஹஸி ॥
    athavā svayamēvainam
    draṣṭumarhasi bhāmini ।
    vacanaissāntvayuktaiṡca
    prasādayitumarhasi ॥
    Or, better yet, O lady, may you see him personally
    and soften him with appropriate and pleasing words!
    த்வத்தர்ஸநே விஸுத்தாத்மா
    ந ஸ கோபம் கரிஷ்யதி ।
    ந ஹி ஸ்த்ரீஷு மஹாத்மாந:
    க்வசித்குர்வந்தி தாருணம் ॥
    tvaddarṡanē viṡuddhātmā
    na sa kōpaṃ kariṣyati ।
    na hi strīṣu mahātmānaḥ
    kvacitkurvanti dāruṇam ॥
    He, of pure and serene nature,
    would not show anger any more, once he sees you.
    Great souls would not at all be harsh with women.
    த்வயா ஸாந்த்வைருபக்ராந்தம்
    ப்ரஸந்நேந்த்ரியமாநஸம் ।
    தத: கமலபத்ராக்ஷம்
    த்ரக்ஷ்யாம்யஹமரிந்தமம் ॥
    tvayā sāntvairupakrāntam
    prasannēndriyamānasam ।
    tataḥ kamalapatrākṣam
    drakṣyāmyahamarindamam ॥
    I shall see the subduer of the foe,
    he of eyes like lotus petals, after you have put
    him in good humor and his mind and senses at ease.
    ஸா ப்ரஸ்கலந்தீ மதவிஹ்வலாக்ஷீ
    ப்ரலம்பகாஞ்சீகுண ஹேமஸூத்ரா ।
    ஸலக்ஷணா லக்ஷ்மணஸந்நிதாநம்
    ஜகாம தாரா நமிதாங்கயஷ்டி: ॥
    sā praskhalantī madavihvalākṣī
    pralambakāñcīguṇa hēmasūtrā ।
    salakṣaṇā lakṣmaṇasannidhānaṃ
    jagāma tārā namitāṅgayaṣṭiḥ ॥
    She of intoxicating eyes,
    her golden necklaces and
    waist band flowing down stylishly,
    went to the presence of Lakshmaṇa
    with faltering steps and
    body bent (as a sign of deference).
    ஸ தாம் ஸமீக்ஷ்யைவ ஹரீஸபத்நீம்
    தஸ்தாவுதாஸீநதயா மஹாத்மா ।
    அவாங்முகோऽபூந்மநுஜேந்த்ரபுத்ர:
    ஸ்த்ரீஸந்நிகர்ஷாத்விநிவ்ருத்தகோப: ॥
    sa tāṃ samīkṣyaiva harīṡapatnīm
    tasthāvudāsīnatayā mahātmā ।
    avāṅmukhō'bhūnmanujēndraputraḥ
    strīsannikarṣādvinivṛttakōpaḥ ॥
    Seeing that it was the wife
    of the lord of the Vānaras that had come,
    that Mahātma calmed down and stood quietly.
    The prince turned his gaze to the ground,
    his anger toned down by the presence of a woman.
    ஸா பாநயோகாத்விநிவ்ருத்தலஜ்ஜா
    த்ருஷ்டிப்ரஸாதாச்ச நரேந்த்ரஸூநோ: ।
    உவாச தாரா ப்ரணயப்ரகல்பம்
    வாக்யம் மஹார்தம் பரிஸாந்த்வ ரூபம் ॥
    sā pānayōgādvinivṛttalajjā
    dṛṣṭiprasādācca narēndrasūnōḥ ।
    uvāca tārā praṇayapragalbhaṃ
    vākyaṃ mahārthaṃ parisāntva rūpam ॥
    Overcoming her hesitation,
    helped by the drinks she had had before and
    by the calm bearing of the prince,
    Tārā spoke these words that were
    pregnant with meaning, calculated to be conciliatory
    and filled with courage born out of affection.
    கிம் கோபமூலம் மநுஜேந்த்ரபுத்ர
    கஸ்தே ந ஸந்திஷ்டதி வாங்நிதேஸே ।
    கஸ்ஸுஷ்கவ்ருக்ஷம் வநமாபதந்தம்
    தவாக்நிமாஸீததி நிர்விஸங்க: ॥
    kiṃ kōpamūlaṃ manujēndraputra
    kastē na santiṣṭhati vāṅnidēṡē ।
    kaṡṡuṣkavṛkṣaṃ vanamāpatantaṃ
    davāgnimāsīdati nirviṡaṅkaḥ ॥
    What is the cause of your anger, O prince?
    Did anyone dare to flout your command?
    Did anyone dare to come near a forest fire
    that was advancing to consume a bone-dry forest?
    ஸ தஸ்யா வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா
    ஸாந்த்வபூர்வமஸங்கித: ।
    பூய: ப்ரணயத்ருஷ்டார்தம்
    லக்ஷ்மணோ வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ॥
    sa tasyā vacanaṃ ṡrutvā
    sāntvapūrvamaṡaṅkitaḥ ।
    bhūyaḥ praṇayadṛṣṭārtham
    lakṣmaṇō vākyamabravīt ॥
    On hearing her words, which were
    conciliatory and gave no room for doubt,
    Lakshmaṇa responded to her in words
    that expressed his purpose,
    with a marked accent of friendliness.
    கிமயம் காமவ்ருத்தஸ்தே
    லுப்ததர்மார்தஸங்க்ரஹ: ।
    பர்தா பர்த்ருஹிதே யுக்தே
    ந சைநமவபுத்த்யஸே ॥
    kimayaṃ kāmavṛttastē
    luptadharmārthasaṅgrahaḥ ।
    bhartā bhartṛhitē yuktē
    na cainamavabuddhyasē ॥
    Can you not see that your husband,
    whose interest you care for,
    is indulged in dalliance, giving no heed
    to the promotion of Dharma and Artha?
    ந சிந்தயதி ராஜ்யார்தம்
    ஸோऽஸ்மாந் ஸோகபராயணாந் ।
    ஸாமாத்யபரிஷத்தாரே
    காமமேவோபஸேவதே ॥
    na cintayati rājyārtham
    sō'smān ṡōkaparāyaṇān ।
    sāmātyapariṣattārē
    kāmamēvōpasēvatē ॥
    O Tārā! He has no thought
    for the concerns of the kingdom
    or for us who are taken over by grief.
    He, along with his council of ministers,
    is indulged in nothing but lechery.
    ஸ மாஸாம்ஸ்சதுர: க்ருத்வா
    ப்ரமாணம் ப்லவகேஸ்வர: ।
    வ்யதீதாம்ஸ்தாந்மதோதக்ரோ
    விஹரந்நாவபுத்யதே ॥
    sa māsāṃṡcaturaḥ kṛtvā
    pramāṇaṃ plavagēṡvaraḥ ।
    vyatītāṃstānmadōdagrō
    viharannāvabudhyatē ॥
    Having agreed upon a limit of four months,
    the King of Vānaras, indulged in
    the excitement of intoxication,
    does not even realize that it has been crossed.
