taṃ tē bhayaparītāṅgāḥ
kruddhaṃ dṛṣṭvā plavaṅgamāḥ ।
kālamṛtyuyugāntābham
ṡataṡō vidrutā diṡaḥ ॥
On seeing him angry, dazzling like the
death of time at the dissolution of the worlds,
hundreds of those Vānaras ran in every direction
with their limbs quivering in fear.
4.31.21 ததஸ்ஸுக்ரீவபவநம்

Then, all those great Vānaras
went to the palace of Sugreeva
and informed him of the
arrival of the angry Lakshmaṇa.

tārayā sahitaḥ kāmī
saktaḥ kapivṛṣō rahaḥ ।
na tēṣāṃ kapisiṃhānām
ṡuṡrāva vacanaṃ tadā ॥
Indulged in dalliance with Tārā (Ruma?)
in his private quarters, that bull among Vānaras
did not hear what those lions among Vānaras said.
4.31.23 ததஸ்ஸசிவஸந்திஷ்டா

tatassacivasandiṣṭā

Then those Vānaras, who made one’s hair stand on its end
with their huge bodies that rivalled hills, elephants and clouds,
came out of the city, ordered by the ministers.
4.31.24 நகதம்ஷ்ட்ராயுதா கோரா:

sarvē ṡārdūladarpāṡca

All of them looked terrible
with their nails and teeth for weapons.
With their frightful faces,
they exuded the pride of tigers.
4.31.25 தஸநாகபலா: கேசித்

Some had the strength of ten elephants,
others of a hundred; yet others were
equal in prowess to a thousand elephants.
4.31.26 ததஸ்தை: கபிபிர்வ்யாப்தாம்

tatastaiḥ kapibhirvyāptām
drumahassairmahābalaiḥ ।
apaṡyallakṣmaṇaḥ kruddhaḥ
kiṣkindhāṃ tāṃ durāsadām ॥
The angry Lakshmaṇa took a look at
Kishkindhā that looked invincible,
guarded everywhere by those immensely strong
Vānaras armed with trees in their hands.
4.31.27 ததஸ்தே ஹரயஸ்ஸர்வே

And all those Vānaras, with their
immense strength in display, emerged
in between the ramparts of the moats,
stationing themselves prominently visible.

That Veera once again fell into a
swoon of anger, thinking of
Sugreeva’s indifference and
his own brother’s urgency.
4.31.29 ஸ தீர்கோஷ்ணமஹோச்ச்வாஸ:

Heaving long and hot sighs,
and his eyes turning blood-red with wrath,
that tiger among men looked like fire, billowing smoke.
4.31.30 பாணஸல்யஸ்புரஜ்ஜிஹ்வ:

பஞ்சாஸ்ய இவ பந்நக: ॥
bāṇaṡalyasphurajjihvaḥ

He looked like a five-headed serpent,
the tips of the arrows for its flicking tongues,
the bow for its hood, and the dread power
that filled him, for its store of poison. Lakshmaṇa is considered the Avatāra of Adiṡesha.
4.31.31 தம் தீப்தமிவ காலாக்நிம்

taṃ dīptamiva kālāgnim

Aṅgada, worried out of fear of him,
approached him who looked as fierce as
the conflagration of the world’s end
and as angry as an enraged tusker.
4.31.32 ஸோऽங்கதம் ரோஷதாம்ராக்ஷ:

And that greatly renowned one,
whose eyes were red with anger,
told Aṅgada, ‘My dear, let Sugreeva
know of my coming, and say this:’

‘This is the younger brother of Rāma,
O subduer of foe, who has come to see you.
This is Lakshmaṇa simmering (with anger) for the
suffering of his brother, standing at your door.
O Vānara, if you please, do what he says’
Say this, my dear, O subduer of foe,
and come back here quick.

Hearing those words of Lakshmaṇa
Aṅgada was gripped with sadness.
Then he went to his father and
told him that Sowmitri had arrived. It is a convention in Indic culture to refer to uncle also as father, if the uncle happens to play the role of the father.

The Vānara, drunk and in stupor
did not know (what was happening).
He was intoxicated with drinks
and sunk in deep infatuation.

Meanwhile, the Vānaras, besides themselves
with fright at the sight of the angry Lakshmaṇa,
screamed and chattered, trying to earn his pleasure.

Seeing him come like a torrent,
they came near Lakshmaṇa and made
a din that was as loud as the
sound of Vajra and thunder.

With that great din, the Vānara (Sugreeva)
whose eyes were red with intoxication
came into his senses, with his
garlands and ornaments in disarray.
