Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 25
In this Sarga, Rāma and Lakshmaṇa console Sugreeva, Tārā and Aṅgada. Rāma reflects on the fate that is in no one's control and exhorts everyone to do what should be done. Lakshmaṇa gives specific directions to Sugreeva as to what should be done. Tāra, minister of Sugreeva gets a palanquin, which was splendid like a chariot. Sugreeva and Aṅgada place the body of Vāli on the palanquin.
Everyone, including the Vānara women, go in a procession wailing. The funeral pyre is prepared on a sand-flat surrounded by the water of a stream. Tārā takes the head of her dead husband onto her lap and cries bitterly saying that Yama has come in the form of Rāma and has taken him away making her and all other wives of Vāli, widows.
Aṅgada lights the funeral pyre. Everyone cries. All of them go to the water and give water libations to Vāli. After the funeral rites are done Sugreeva reaches out to Rāma and Lakshmaṇa.
4.25.1 ஸ ஸுக்ரீவம் ச தாராம் ச
ஸாங்கதம் ஸஹலக்ஷ்மண: ।
ஸமாநஸோக: காகுத்ஸ்த:
ஸாந்த்வயந்நிதமப்ரவீத் ॥
sa sugrīvaṃ ca tārāṃ ca
sāṅgadaṃ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ ।
samānaṡōkaḥ kākutsthaḥ
sāntvayannidamabravīt ॥
Kakutstha, along with Lakshmaṇa,
consoled Sugreeva, Tārā and Aṅgada,
while grieving as much as they did:
4.25.2 ந ஸோகபரிதாபேந
ஸ்ரேயஸா யுஜ்யதே ம்ருத: ।
யதத்ராநந்தரம் கார்யம்
தத்ஸமாதாதுமர்ஹத ॥
na ṡōkaparitāpēna
ṡrēyasā yujyatē mṛtaḥ ।
yadatrānantaraṃ kāryam
tatsamādhātumarhatha ॥
Wailing and anguishing would
be of no use to the dead.
You should go about what is to be done next.
4.25.3 லோகவ்ருத்தமநுஷ்டேயம்
க்ருதம் வோ பாஷ்பமோக்ஷணம் ।
ந காலாதுத்தரம் கிஞ்சித்
கர்ம ஸக்யமுபாஸிதும் ॥
lōkavṛttamanuṣṭhēyam
kṛtaṃ vō bāṣpamōkṣaṇam ।
na kālāduttaraṃ kiñcit
karma ṡakyamupāsitum ॥
Whatever is customary should be done.
You have shed your tears;
there is not much that can be
done after one’s passing.
4.25.4 நியதி: காரணம் லோகே
நியதி: கர்மஸாதநம் ।
நியதிஸ்ஸர்வபூதாநாம்
நியோகேஷ்விஹ காரணம் ॥
niyatiḥ kāraṇaṃ lōkē
niyatiḥ karmasādhanam ।
niyatissarvabhūtānām
niyōgēṣviha kāraṇam ॥
It is the cosmic order
that makes everything happen in this world.
It is ordained by the cosmic order
that things are accomplished.
It is the cosmic order that
prompts all creatures to do its bidding. It may be surprising to see Rāma holding the cosmic order, nature of things and time, but not himself responsible for killing Vāli.
This is because Rāma truly holds the view that everyone is ultimately driven by destiny. He says the same even in the case of Kaikēyee; while everyone blames her for the disaster, Rāma holds that it is Providence that is responsible for her to behave the way she behaved (Ṡlōka 2.22.16).
4.25.5 ந கர்தா கஸ்யசித்கஸ்சித்
நியோகே நாபிசேஸ்வர: ।
ஸ்வபாவே வர்ததே லோக:
தஸ்ய கால: பராயணம் ॥
na kartā kasyacitkaṡcit
niyōgē nāpicēṡvaraḥ ।
svabhāvē vartatē lōkaḥ
tasya kālaḥ parāyaṇam ॥
No one can make anyone do anything; not even Eeswara.
The world moves according to its nature
which is ultimately decided by Time.
4.25.6 ந கால: காலமத்யேதி
ந கால: பரிஹீயதே ।
ஸ்வபாவம் ச ஸமாஸாத்ய
ந கஸ்சிததிவர்ததே ॥
na kālaḥ kālamatyēti
na kālaḥ parihīyatē ।
svabhāvaṃ ca samāsādya
na kaṡcidativartatē ॥
Time is never going to overstep itself.
And no one can overstep Time.
No one can go against their own nature
that is built into them.
4.25.7 ந காலஸ்யாஸ்தி பந்துத்வம்
ந ஹேதுர்ந பராக்ரம: ।
ந மித்ரஜ்ஞாதிஸம்பந்த:
காரணம் நாத்மநோ வஸ: ॥
na kālasyāsti bandhutvam
na hēturna parākramaḥ ।
na mitrajñātisambandhaḥ
kāraṇaṃ nātmanō vaṡaḥ ॥
Time has no reason, no relations,
no friends, no kith and kin.
No one can control it or win over it.
4.25.8 கிம் து காலபரீணாமோ
த்ரஷ்டவ்ய: ஸாது பஸ்யதா ।
தர்மஸ்சார்தஸ்ச காமஸ்ச
காலக்ரமஸமாஹிதா: ॥
kiṃ tu kālaparīṇāmō
draṣṭavyaḥ sādhu paṡyatā ।
dharmaṡcārthaṡca kāmaṡca
kālakramasamāhitāḥ ॥
Yet those who can discern things
should be able to see how time evolves to bring
Dharma, Artha and Kāma to their culmination.
4.25.9 இதஸ்ஸ்வாம் ப்ரக்ருதிம் வாலீ
கத:ப்ராப்த: க்ரியாபலம் ।
தர்மார்தகாம ஸம்யோகை:
பவித்ரம் ப்லவகேஸ்வர: ॥
itassvāṃ prakṛtiṃ vālī
gataḥprāptaḥ kriyāphalam ।
dharmārthakāma saṃyōgaiḥ
pavitraṃ plavagēṡvaraḥ ॥
Vāli attained his original state, henceforth.
The lord of Vānaras reaped the irrefutable fruit of
the seeds of Dharma, Artha and Kama that he sowed.
4.25.10 ஸ்வதர்மஸ்ய ச ஸம்யோகாத்
ஜிதஸ்தேந மஹாத்மநா ।
ஸ்வர்க: பரிக்ருஹீதஸ்ச
ப்ராணாநபரிரக்ஷதா ॥
svadharmasya ca saṃyōgāt
jitastēna mahātmanā ।
svargaḥ parigṛhītaṡca
prāṇānaparirakṣatā ॥
Vāli, the Mahātma, by sticking to
his own nature than to his mortal life
won the heaven and reached it.
4.25.11 ஏஷா வை நியதிஸ்ஸ்ரேஷ்டா
யாம் கதோ ஹரியூதப: ।
ததலம் பரிதாபேந
ப்ராப்தகாலமுபாஸ்யதாம் ॥
ēṣā vai niyatiṡṡrēṣṭhā
yāṃ gatō hariyūthapaḥ ।
tadalaṃ paritāpēna
prāptakālamupāsyatām ॥
The appointed end, which
the leader of the Vānara warriors
has attained, is the highest possible;
so cease mourning for him,
and see to what must be done now.
4.24.12 வசநாந்தே து ராமஸ்ய
லக்ஷ்மண: பரவீரஹா ।
அவதத்ப்ரஸ்ரிதம் வாக்யம்
ஸுக்ரீவம் கதசேதஸம் ॥
vacanāntē tu rāmasya
lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā ।
avadatpraṡritaṃ vākyam
sugrīvaṃ gatacētasam ॥
After Rāma ended speaking,
Lakshmaṇa, the slayer of foes
said these words, in a humble manner,
to the disconcerted Sugreeva.
4.25.13 குரு த்வமஸ்ய ஸுக்ரீவ
ப்ரேதகார்யமநந்தரம் ।
தாராங்கதாப்யாம் ஸஹிதோ
வாலிநோ தஹநம் ப்ரதி ॥
kuru tvamasya sugrīva
prētakāryamanantaram ।
tārāṅgadābhyāṃ sahitō
vālinō dahanaṃ prati ॥
O Sugreeva! Please prepare,
along with Tāra and Aṅgada,
for the cremation of Vāli,
and perform the final rites!
Tāra, as opposed to Tārā the wife of Vāli,
is the male Vānara, a minister of Sugreeva.
4.25.14 ஸமாஜ்ஞாபய காஷ்டாநி
ஸுஷ்காநி ச பஹூநி ச ।
சந்தநாதீநி திவ்யாநி
வாலிஸம்ஸ்காரகாரணாத் ॥
samājñāpaya kāṣṭhāni
ṡuṣkāni ca bahūni ca ।
candanādīni divyāni
vālisaṃskārakāraṇāt ॥
Give orders for the collection of
ample quantities of dry firewood,
including the splendid sandal wood,
for the cremation of Vāli.
4.25.15 ஸமாஸ்வாஸய சைநம் த்வம்
அங்கதம் தீநசேதஸம் ।
மா பூர்பாலிஸபுத்திஸ்த்வம்
த்வததீநமிதம் புரம் ॥
samāṡvāsaya cainaṃ tvam
aṅgadaṃ dīnacētasam ।
mā bhūrbāliṡabuddhistvam
tvadadhīnamidaṃ puram ॥
Please console the despondent Aṅgada!
Do not let the (disturbed) child in you take over,
for the city is now in your hands.
4.25.16 அங்கதஸ்த்வாநயேந்மால்யம்
வஸ்த்ராணி விவிதாநி ச ।
க்ருதம் தைலமதோ கந்தாந்
யச்சாத்ர ஸமநந்தரம் ॥
aṅgadastvānayēnmālyam
vastrāṇi vividhāni ca ।
ghṛtaṃ tailamathō gandhān
yaccātra samanantaram ॥
Let Aṅgada collect and bring
garlands, flowers, clothes of different kinds,
oil, ghee, scents and such
other things as would be needed.
4.25.17 த்வம் தார ஸிபிகாம் ஸீக்ரம்
ஆதாயாகச்ச ஸம்ப்ரமாத் ।
த்வரா குணவதீ யுக்தா
ஹ்யஸ்மிந்காலே விஸேஷத: ॥
tvaṃ tāra ṡibikāṃ ṡīghram
ādāyāgaccha sambhramāt ।
tvarā guṇavatī yuktā
hyasminkālē viṡēṣataḥ ॥
You, O Tāra, go in all haste
and bring a palanquin quick;
expediency is of essence, especially
in a situation like this.
4.25.18 ஸஜ்ஜீபவந்து ப்லவகா:
ஸிபிகாவாஹநோசிதா: ।
ஸமர்தா பலிநஸ்சைவ
நிர்ஹரிஷ்யந்தி வாலிநம் ॥
sajjībhavantu plavagāḥ
ṡibikāvāhanōcitāḥ ।
samarthā balinaṡcaiva
nirhariṣyanti vālinam ॥
Let strong and able Vānaras
who can carry the palanquin
be ready to take Vāli!
4.25.19 ஏவமுக்த்வா து ஸுக்ரீவம்
ஸுமித்ராநந்தவர்தந: ।
தஸ்தௌ ப்ராத்ருஸமீபஸ்தோ
லக்ஷ்மண: பரவீரஹா ॥
ēvamuktvā tu sugrīvam
sumitrānandavardhanaḥ ।
tasthau bhrātṛsamīpasthō
lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā ॥
Having thus advised Sugreeva,
Lakshmaṇa, augmenter of Sumitra’s happiness
and slayer of enemy forces,
stood by his brother’s side.
4.25.20 லக்ஷ்மணஸ்ய வசஸ்ஸ்ருத்வா
தாரஸ்ஸம்ப்ராந்தமாநஸ: ।
ப்ரவிவேஸ குஹாம் ஸீக்ரம்
ஸிபிகாஸக்தமாநஸ: ॥
lakṣmaṇasya vacaṡṡrutvā
tārassambhrāntamānasaḥ ।
pravivēṡa guhāṃ ṡīghram
ṡibikāsaktamānasaḥ ॥
Hearing those words of Lakshmaṇa, Tāra went
in all haste to the cave to fetch the palanquin.
4.25.21 ஆதாய ஸிபிகாம் தார:
ஸ து பர்யாபதத்புந: ।
வாநரைருஹ்யமாநாம் தாம்
ஸூரைருத்வஹநோசிதை: ॥
ādāya ṡibikāṃ tāraḥ
sa tu paryāpatatpunaḥ ।
vānarairuhyamānāṃ tām
ṡūrairudvahanōcitaiḥ ॥
Tāra took that palanquin and returned quickly,
with it being carried by mighty strong Vānaras
who were skilled at carrying a palanquin.
4.25.22-26 திவ்யாம் பத்ராஸநயுதாம்
ஸிபிகாம் ஸ்யந்தநோபமாம் ।
பக்ஷிகர்மபிராசித்ராம்
த்ருமகர்மவிபூஷிதாம் ।
ஆசிதாம் சித்ரபத்தீபி
ஸ்ஸுநிவிஷ்டாம் ஸமந்தத: ।
விமாநமிவ ஸித்தாநாம்
ஜாலவாதாயநாந்விதாம் ।
ஸுநியுக்தாம் விஸாலாம் ச
ஸுக்ருதாம் விஸ்வகர்மணா ।
தாருபர்வதகோபேதாம்
சாருகர்மபரிஷ்க்ருதாம் ।
வராபரணஹாரைஸ்ச
சித்ரமால்யோபஸோபிதாம் ।
குஹாகஹநஸஞ்சந்நாம்
ரக்தசந்தநபூஷிதாம் ।
புஷ்பௌகைஸ்ஸமபிச்சந்நாம்
பத்மமாலாபிரேவ ச ।
தருணாதித்யவர்ணாபி:

sukṛtāṃ viṡvakarmaṇā ।
dāruparvatakōpētām
cārukarmapariṣkṛtām ।
varābharaṇahāraiṡca
citramālyōpaṡōbhitām ।
guhāgahanasañchannām
raktacandanabhūṣitām ।
puṣpaughaissamabhicchannām
padmamālābhirēva ca ।
taruṇādityavarṇābhiḥ
bhrājamānābhirāvṛtām ॥
It was splendid like a chariot
with a comfortable seat,
amazing carvings in the likeness of birds and
resplendent woodwork of figurines of weight bearers.
It was like an air car that carries Siddhas
well constructed by master craftsmen
with vent-holes and casements and
awnings plastered with red sandal paste.
It had beautiful carvings of trees and mountains.
It was winsome with exquisite ornaments,
chains and wonderful garlands.
It was dazzling like the morning sun,
covered in bunches of flowers and garlands of lotuses.

aṅgadastvānayēnmālyam
vastrāṇi vividhāni ca ।
ghṛtaṃ tailamathō gandhān
yaccātra samanantaram ॥
Let Aṅgada collect and bring
garlands, flowers, clothes of different kinds,
oil, ghee, scents and such
other things as would be needed.
4.25.17 த்வம் தார ஸிபிகாம் ஸீக்ரம்
ஆதாயாகச்ச ஸம்ப்ரமாத் ।
த்வரா குணவதீ யுக்தா
ஹ்யஸ்மிந்காலே விஸேஷத: ॥
tvaṃ tāra ṡibikāṃ ṡīghram
ādāyāgaccha sambhramāt ।
tvarā guṇavatī yuktā
hyasminkālē viṡēṣataḥ ॥
You, O Tāra, go in all haste
and bring a palanquin quick;
expediency is of essence, especially
in a situation like this.
4.25.18 ஸஜ்ஜீபவந்து ப்லவகா:
ஸிபிகாவாஹநோசிதா: ।
ஸமர்தா பலிநஸ்சைவ
நிர்ஹரிஷ்யந்தி வாலிநம் ॥
sajjībhavantu plavagāḥ
ṡibikāvāhanōcitāḥ ।
samarthā balinaṡcaiva
nirhariṣyanti vālinam ॥
Let strong and able Vānaras
who can carry the palanquin
be ready to take Vāli!
4.25.19 ஏவமுக்த்வா து ஸுக்ரீவம்
ஸுமித்ராநந்தவர்தந: ।
தஸ்தௌ ப்ராத்ருஸமீபஸ்தோ
லக்ஷ்மண: பரவீரஹா ॥
ēvamuktvā tu sugrīvam
sumitrānandavardhanaḥ ।
tasthau bhrātṛsamīpasthō
lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā ॥
Having thus advised Sugreeva,
Lakshmaṇa, augmenter of Sumitra’s happiness
and slayer of enemy forces,
stood by his brother’s side.
4.25.20 லக்ஷ்மணஸ்ய வசஸ்ஸ்ருத்வா
தாரஸ்ஸம்ப்ராந்தமாநஸ: ।
ப்ரவிவேஸ குஹாம் ஸீக்ரம்
ஸிபிகாஸக்தமாநஸ: ॥
lakṣmaṇasya vacaṡṡrutvā
tārassambhrāntamānasaḥ ।
pravivēṡa guhāṃ ṡīghram
ṡibikāsaktamānasaḥ ॥
Hearing those words of Lakshmaṇa, Tāra went
in all haste to the cave to fetch the palanquin.
4.25.21 ஆதாய ஸிபிகாம் தார:
ஸ து பர்யாபதத்புந: ।
வாநரைருஹ்யமாநாம் தாம்
ஸூரைருத்வஹநோசிதை: ॥
ādāya ṡibikāṃ tāraḥ
sa tu paryāpatatpunaḥ ।
vānarairuhyamānāṃ tām
ṡūrairudvahanōcitaiḥ ॥
Tāra took that palanquin and returned quickly,
with it being carried by mighty strong Vānaras
who were skilled at carrying a palanquin.
4.25.22-26 திவ்யாம் பத்ராஸநயுதாம்
ஸிபிகாம் ஸ்யந்தநோபமாம் ।
பக்ஷிகர்மபிராசித்ராம்
த்ருமகர்மவிபூஷிதாம் ।
ஆசிதாம் சித்ரபத்தீபி
ஸ்ஸுநிவிஷ்டாம் ஸமந்தத: ।
விமாநமிவ ஸித்தாநாம்
ஜாலவாதாயநாந்விதாம் ।
ஸுநியுக்தாம் விஸாலாம் ச
ஸுக்ருதாம் விஸ்வகர்மணா ।
தாருபர்வதகோபேதாம்
சாருகர்மபரிஷ்க்ருதாம் ।
வராபரணஹாரைஸ்ச
சித்ரமால்யோபஸோபிதாம் ।
குஹாகஹநஸஞ்சந்நாம்
ரக்தசந்தநபூஷிதாம் ।
புஷ்பௌகைஸ்ஸமபிச்சந்நாம்
பத்மமாலாபிரேவ ச ।
தருணாதித்யவர்ணாபி:
ப்ராஜமாநாபிராவ்ருதாம் ॥
divyāṃ bhadrāsanayutām
ṡibikāṃ syandanōpamām ।
pakṣikarmabhirācitrām
drumakarmavibhūṣitām ।
ācitāṃ citrapattībhi
ssuniviṣṭāṃ samantataḥ ।
vimānamiva siddhānām
jālavātāyanānvitām ।
suniyuktāṃ viṡālāṃ ca
sukṛtāṃ viṡvakarmaṇā ।
dāruparvatakōpētām
cārukarmapariṣkṛtām ।
varābharaṇahāraiṡca
citramālyōpaṡōbhitām ।
guhāgahanasañchannām
raktacandanabhūṣitām ।
puṣpaughaissamabhicchannām
padmamālābhirēva ca ।
taruṇādityavarṇābhiḥ
bhrājamānābhirāvṛtām ॥
It was splendid like a chariot
with a comfortable seat,
amazing carvings in the likeness of birds and
resplendent woodwork of figurines of weight bearers.
It was like an air car that carries Siddhas
well constructed by master craftsmen
with vent-holes and casements and
awnings plastered with red sandal paste.
It had beautiful carvings of trees and mountains.
It was winsome with exquisite ornaments,
chains and wonderful garlands.
It was dazzling like the morning sun,
covered in bunches of flowers and garlands of lotuses.
