    4.18.46b-47a ப்ரத்யுவாச ததோ ராமம்
    ப்ராஞ்ஜலிர்வாநரேஸ்வர: ।
    யத்த்வமாத்த நரஸ்ரேஷ்ட
    ததேவம் நாத்ர ஸம்ஸய: ॥
    pratyuvāca tatō rāmam
    prāñjalirvānarēṡvaraḥ ।
    yattvamāttha naraṡrēṣṭha
    tadēvaṃ nātra saṃṡayaḥ ॥
    Then the lord of Vānaras replied to Rāma
    with his palms joined in reverence:
    ‘O best of men! Whatever is said by you
    is correct, without a doubt!’
    4.18.47b-48 ப்ரதிவக்தும் ப்ரக்ருஷ்டே ஹி
    நாபக்ருஷ்டஸ்து ஸக்நுயாத் ।
    யதயுக்தம் மயா பூர்வம்
    ப்ரமாதாத்வாக்யமப்ரியம் ।
    தத்ராபி கலு மே தோஷம்
    கர்தும் நார்ஹஸி ராகவ ॥
    prativaktuṃ prakṛṣṭē hi
    nāpakṛṣṭastu ṡaknuyāt ।
    yadayuktaṃ mayā pūrvam
    pramādādvākyamapriyam ।
    tatrāpi khalu mē dōṣam
    kartuṃ nārhasi rāghava ॥
    Certainly, one with meager wisdom
    can hardly refute one full of wisdom.
    O Rāghava! I hope you will not hold against me
    whatever harsh and unpleasant words
    were said by me in my heedlessness!
    4.18.49 த்வம் ஹி த்ருஷ்டார்ததத்த்வஜ்ஞ:
    ப்ரஜாநாம் ச ஹிதே ரத: ।
    கார்யகாரணஸித்தௌ ச
    ப்ரஸந்நா புத்திரவ்யயா ॥
    tvaṃ hi dṛṣṭārthatattvajñaḥ
    prajānāṃ ca hitē rataḥ ।
    kāryakāraṇasiddhau ca
    prasannā buddhiravyayā ॥
    You know everything, in its grain and detail.
    You are ever devoted to the welfare of people.
    Your judgment is clear and unerring
    regarding how everything ties together.
    4.18.50 மாமப்யவகதம் தர்மாத்
    வ்யதிக்ராந்தபுரஸ்க்ருதம் ।
    தர்மஸம்ஹிதயா வாசா
    தர்மஜ்ஞ பரிபாலய ॥
    māmapyavagataṃ dharmāt
    vyatikrāntapuraskṛtam ।
    dharmasaṃhitayā vācā
    dharmajña paripālaya ॥
    O knower of Dharma! Please shower your grace,
    as much as Dharma gives allowance,
    on me, who has fallen from Dharma
    and is guilty of crossing the line!
    4.18.51 பாஷ்பஸம்ருத்தகண்டஸ்து
    வாலீ ஸார்தரவ: ஸநை: ।
    உவாச ராமம் ஸம்ப்ரேக்ஷ்ய
    பங்கலக்ந இவ த்விப: ॥
    bāṣpasaṃruddhakaṇṭhastu
    vālī sārtaravaḥ ṡanaiḥ ।
    uvāca rāmaṃ saṃprēkṣya
    paṅkalagna iva dvipaḥ ॥
    And Vāli, his throat choked by tears
    and his voice quavering in distress,
    slowly addressed Rama, earnestly looking at him
    like an elephant caught in a deep mire:
    4.18.52 ந த்வாத்மாநமஹம் ஸோசே
    ந தாராம் ந ச பாந்தவாந் ।
    யதா புத்ரம் குணஜ்யேஷ்டம்
    அங்கதம் கநகாங்கதம் ॥
    na tvātmānamahaṃ ṡōcē
    na tārāṃ na ca bāndhavān ।
    yathā putraṃ guṇajyēṣṭham
    aṅgadaṃ kanakāṅgadam ॥
    I do not worry as much about myself
    or Tārā or my other kith and kin,
    as I do of my son Aṅgada
    of golden anklets and bracelets
    who is outstanding for his qualities.
    4.18.53 ஸ மமாதர்ஸநாத்தீநோ
    பால்யாத்ப்ரப்ருதி லாலித: ।
    தடாக இவ பீதாம்பு:
    உபஸோஷம் கமிஷ்யதி ॥
    sa mamādarṡanāddīnō
    bālyātprabhṛti lālitaḥ ।
    taṭāka iva pītāmbuḥ
    upaṡōṣaṃ gamiṣyati ॥
    Without seeing me, he who has been
    pampered and doted upon since childhood
    will feel miserable and lifeless
    like a lake whose waters are used up.
    4.18.54 பாலஸ்சாக்ருதபுத்திஸ்ச
    ஏகபுத்ரஸ்ச மே ப்ரிய: ।
    தாரேயோ ராம பவதா
    ரக்ஷணீயோ மஹாபல: ॥
    bālaṡcākṛtabuddhiṡca
    ēkaputraṡca mē priyaḥ ।
    tārēyō rāma bhavatā
    rakṣaṇīyō mahābalaḥ ॥
    He, of great strength, is still young
    and is not matured in the ways of the world.
    He is the only son for me and Tārā.
    He needs your protection. Can someone who is convicted of a crime and sentenced to death or imprisonment request government to provide care for his kith and kin who are consequently left without a provider or a guardian?
    4.18.55 ஸுக்ரீவே சாங்கதே சைவ
    விதத்ஸ்வ மதிமுத்தமாம் ।
    த்வம் ஹி ஸாஸ்தா ச கோப்தா ச
    கார்யாகார்யவிதௌ ஸ்தித: ॥
    sugrīvē cāṅgadē caiva
    vidhatsva matimuttamām ।
    tvaṃ hi ṡāstā ca gōptā ca
    kāryākāryavidhau sthitaḥ ॥
    Bestow the best of your grace
    upon Sugreeva as well as Aṅgada.
    Being in charge of what
    should be and should not be done,
    you are the (right) one to
    command as well as protect (them). Now that Vāli has come out of his rage and has regained his sense of Dharma, he speaks of Sugreeva and Aṅgada in the same tone, treating them both equally as his sons.
    4.18.56 யா தே நரபதே வ்ருத்தி:
    பரதே லக்ஷ்மணே ச யா ।
    ஸுக்ரீவே சாங்கதே ராஜந்
    தாம் சிந்தயிதுமர்ஹஸி ॥
    yā tē narapatē vṛttiḥ
    bharatē lakṣmaṇē ca yā ।
    sugrīvē cāṅgadē rājan
    tāṃ cintayitumarhasi ॥
    O King! O lord of men! May you
    consider showing the same exact care
    to Sugreeva and Aṅgada that
    you show to Bharata and Lakshmaṇa!
    4.18.57 மத்தோஷக்ருததோஷாம் தாம்
    யதா தாராம் தபஸ்விநீம் ।
    ஸுக்ரீவோ நாவமந்யேத
    ததாऽவஸ்தாதுமர்ஹஸி ॥
    maddōṣakṛtadōṣāṃ tām
    yathā tārāṃ tapasvinīm ।
    sugrīvō nāvamanyēta
    tathā'vasthātumarhasi ॥
    May you see to it that Sugreeva
    does not slight the sorrowing Tārā,
    who is now tainted because of
    the sins committed by me. Vāli’s rage, which was triggered when Sugreeva left the cave after closing its entrance, perhaps got the better of him all this time.
    But now, having been punished, and being only moments away from death, it all became clear to him, and he realizes that Tārā could be found to be at fault too, for supporting him even after he crossed the line of Dharma by touching his brother’s wife.
    4.18.58-59a த்வயா ஹ்யநுக்ருஹீதேந
    ராஜ்யம் ஸக்யமுபாஸிதும் ।
    த்வத்வஸே வர்தமாநேந
    தவ சித்தாநுவர்திநா ।
    ஸக்யம் திவம் சார்ஜயிதும்
    வஸுதாம் சாபி ஸாஸிதும் ॥
    tvayā hyanugṛhītēna
    rājyaṃ ṡakyamupāsitum ।
    tvadvaṡē vartamānēna
    tava cittānuvartinā ।
    ṡakyaṃ divaṃ cārjayitum
    vasudhāṃ cāpi ṡāsitum ॥
    Only with your blessings can one govern a kingdom.
    He who conducts himself in accordance
    with your views, and obeys you,
    can rule the entire earth and
    can gain entitlement to a place in heaven.
    4.18.59b-60a த்வத்தோऽஹம் வதமாகாங்க்ஷந்
    வார்யமாணோऽபி தாரயா ।
    ஸுக்ரீவேண ஸஹ ப்ராத்ரா
    த்வந்த்வயுத்தமுபாகத: ॥
    tvattō'haṃ vadhamākāṅkṣan
    vāryamāṇō'pi tārayā ।
    sugrīvēṇa saha bhrātrā
    dvandvayuddhamupāgataḥ ॥
    (Perhaps) it was wishing to be killed by you,
    that I came to fight a duel with my brother Sugreeva,
    even though Tārā tried to stop me.
    4.18.60b-61 இத்யுக்த்வா ஸந்நதோ ராமம்
    விரராம ஹரீஸ்வர: ।
    ஸ தமாஸ்வாஸயத்ராமோ
    வாலிநம் வ்யக்ததர்ஸநம் ।
    ஸாதுஸம்மதயா வாசா
    தர்மதத்த்வார்தயுக்தயா ॥
    ityuktvā sannatō rāmam
    virarāma harīṡvaraḥ ।
    sa tamāṡvāsayadrāmō
    vālinaṃ vyaktadarṡanam ।
    sādhusaṃmatayā vācā
    dharmatattvārthayuktayā ॥
    Having said this, the lord of the Vānaras
    fell silent, sunk in weakness.
    Rāma then consoled Vāli who now gained clarity
    with words that were meaningful,
    deeply in accordance with Dharma
    and the expectations of all good men.
    4.18.62 ந ஸந்தாபஸ்த்வயா கார்ய
    ஏததர்தம் ப்லவங்கம ।
    ந வயம் பவதா சிந்த்யா
    நாப்யாத்மா ஹரிஸத்தம ।
    வயம் பவத்விஸேஷேண
    தர்மத: க்ருதநிஸ்சயா: ॥
    na santāpastvayā kārya
    ētadarthaṃ plavaṅgama ।
    na vayaṃ bhavatā cintyā
    nāpyātmā harisattama ।
    vayaṃ bhavadviṡēṣēṇa
    dharmataḥ kṛtaniṡcayāḥ ॥
    O Vānara! You should not worry about any of this.
    O best of Vānaras, neither
    should you worry about us or yourself.
    We are especially committed to do what is right
    in matters of concern to you. The adjective of मानद (mānada) is often used for Rāma. The same adjective is used for Sree Mahā Vishṇu, in Vishṇu Sahasra Nāma also.
    It literally translates to ‘one who gives dignity’. But the purport of it is, ‘one who gives respect to everyone and upholds everyone’s dignity’. This is one of the hallmark qualities of all noble men.
    Rāma shows that quality in action here. With the punishment meted out to him, Vāli is relieved of his crime and sins. Now he needs to be treated like everyone else, with dignity. Rāma shows here the concern and dignity that everyone deserves.
    One should not take advantage and demean a criminal after he pays for it as laid out in the law. The punishment clears one of the crime. With that the person is as pure as he originally was and should be treated as such.
    4.18.63 தண்ட்யே ய: பாதயேத்தண்டம்
    தண்ட்யோ யஸ்சாபி தண்ட்யதே ।
    கார்யகாரணஸித்தார்தா
    வுபௌ தௌ நாவஸீதத: ॥
    daṇḍyē yaḥ pātayēddaṇḍam
    daṇḍyō yaṡcāpi daṇḍyatē ।
    kāryakāraṇasiddhārthā
    vubhau tau nāvasīdataḥ ॥
    Both he who punishes the deserving
    and he who receives the punishment he deserves,
    are not at loss, having helped
    things take their natural course.
    4.18.64 தத்பவாந்தண்டஸம்யோகாத்
    அஸ்மாத்விகதகல்மஷ: ।
    கதஸ்ஸ்வாம் ப்ரக்ருதிம் தர்ம்யம்
    தர்மத்ருஷ்டேந வர்த்மநா ॥
    tadbhavāndaṇḍasaṃyōgāt
    asmādvigatakalmaṣaḥ ।
    gatassvāṃ prakṛtiṃ dharmyam
    dharmadṛṣṭēna vartmanā ॥
    With the punishment meted out,
    you are now freed from your sins.
    As mentioned by the laws of justice,
    you are (now) established in your
    original and righteous nature.
    4.18.65 த்யஜ ஸோகம் ச மோஹம் ச
    பயம் ச ஹ்ருதயே ஸ்திதம் ।
    த்வயா விதாநம் ஹர்யக்ர்ய
    ந ஸக்யமதிவர்திதும் ॥
    tyaja ṡōkaṃ ca mōhaṃ ca
    bhayaṃ ca hṛdayē sthitam ।
    tvayā vidhānaṃ haryagrya
    na ṡakyamativartitum ॥
    Give up the grief, confusion and fear
    that has taken root in your heart.
    O Chief of Vānaras! You cannot
    escape what is ordained.
    4.18.66 யதா த்வய்யங்கதோ நித்யம்
    வர்ததே வாநரேஸ்வர ।
    ததா வர்தேத ஸுக்ரீவே
    மயி சாபி ந ஸம்ஸய: ॥
    yathā tvayyaṅgadō nityam
    vartatē vānarēṡvara ।
    tathā vartēta sugrīvē
    mayi cāpi na saṃṡayaḥ ॥
    As for Aṅgada, he will be as completely at home
    with Sugriva and me, as he had been with you,
    without a doubt, O Lord of Vānaras!
    4.18.67 ஸ தஸ்ய வாக்யம் மதுரம் மஹாத்மந:
    ஸமாஹிதம் தர்மபதாநுவர்திந: ।
    நிஸம்ய ராமஸ்ய ரணாவமர்திநோ
    வசஸ்ஸுயுக்தம் நிஜகாத வாநர: ॥
    sa tasya vākyaṃ madhuraṃ mahātmanaḥ
    samāhitaṃ dharmapathānuvartinaḥ ।
    niṡamya rāmasya raṇāvamardinō
    vacassuyuktaṃ nijagāda vānaraḥ ॥
    Hearing those sweet and well considered words of
    Mahātma Rāma, destroyer of the foe in battle,
    who walked in the ways of Dharma,
    the Vānara replied in singularly apt words:
    4.18.68 ஸராபிதப்தேந விசேதஸா மயா
    ப்ரதூஷிதஸ்த்வம் யதஜாநதா ப்ரபோ ।
    இதம் மஹேந்த்ரோபம பீமவிக்ரம
    ப்ரஸாதிதஸ்த்வம் க்ஷம மே நரேஸ்வர ॥
    ṡarābhitaptēna vicētasā mayā
    pradūṣitastvaṃ yadajānatā prabhō ।
    idaṃ mahēndrōpama bhīmavikrama
    prasāditastvaṃ kṣama mē narēṡvara ॥
    O my lord and lord of all people!
    O you of valor comparable to that of the great Indra!
    Please forgive me and shower your grace
    for throwing extreme accusations at you,
    driven by ignorance and out of pain caused
    by the strike of the arrow that rendered me off-balance.
    இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
    ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    கிஷ்கிந்தாகாண்டே அஷ்டாதஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
    ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
    ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
    kiṣkindhākāṇḍē aṣṭādaṡassargaḥ ॥
    Thus concludes the eighteenth Sarga
    in Kishkindhā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
