Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 12
4.12.21 ஏதஸ்மிந்நந்தரே பக்ந:
ஸுக்ரீவஸ்தேந வாலிநா ।
அபஸ்யந்ராகவம் நாதம்
ருஸ்யமூகம் ப்ரதுத்ருவே ॥
ētasminnantarē bhagnaḥ
sugrīvastēna vālinā ।
apaṡyanrāghavaṃ nātham
ṛṡyamūkaṃ pradudruvē ॥
Meanwhile, smashed by Vāli,
and not seeing Rāghava coming to his rescue,
Sugreeva fled to Ṛshyamūka.
4.12.22 க்லாந்தோ ருதிரஸிக்தாங்க:
ப்ரஹாரைர்ஜர்ஜரீக்ருத: ।
வாலிநாऽபித்ருத: க்ரோதாத்
ப்ரவிவேஸ மஹாவநம் ॥
klāntō rudhirasiktāṅgaḥ
prahārairjarjharīkṛtaḥ ।
vālinā'bhidrutaḥ krōdhāt
pravivēṡa mahāvanam ॥
He entered the great forest,
exhausted, his body covered with blood,
his limbs broken by blows,
while Vāli still pursued him in his wrath.
4.12.23 தம் ப்ரவிஷ்டம் வநம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
வாலீ ஸாபபயார்தித: ।
முக்தோ ஹ்யஸி த்வமித்யுக்த்வா
ஸ நிவ்ருத்தோ மஹாத்யுதி: ॥
taṃ praviṣṭaṃ vanaṃ dṛṣṭvā
vālī ṡāpabhayārditaḥ ।
muktō hyasi tvamityuktvā
sa nivṛttō mahādyutiḥ ॥
Seeing him enter the Vana, Vāli of immense power,
who was afraid of the curse, went back,
saying, ‘Ah! well, you have escaped!’
4.12.24 ராகவோऽபி ஸஹ ப்ராத்ரா
ஸஹ சைவ ஹநூமதா ।
ததேவ வநமாகச்சத்
ஸுக்ரீவோ யத்ர வாநர: ॥
rāghavō'pi saha bhrātrā
saha caiva hanūmatā ।
tadēva vanamāgacchat
sugrīvō yatra vānaraḥ ॥
Rāghava also, along with his brother
and also along with Hanumān, returned
to that Vana where Sugreeva, the Vānara, was.
4.12.25 தம் ஸமீக்ஷ்யாகதம் ராமம்
ஸுக்ரீவஸ்ஸஹலக்ஷ்மணம் ।
ஹ்ரீமாந்தீநமுவாசேதம்
வஸுதாமவலோகயந் ॥
taṃ samīkṣyāgataṃ rāmam
sugrīvassahalakṣmaṇam ।
hrīmāndīnamuvācēdam
vasudhāmavalōkayan ॥
Seeing Rāma return along with Lakshmaṇa,
Sugreeva said these words
feeling disgraced, eyes cast down:
4.12.26 ஆஹ்வயஸ்வேதி மாமுக்த்வா
தர்ஸயித்வா ச விக்ரமம் ।
வைரிணா காதயித்வா ச
கிமிதாநீம் த்வயா க்ருதம் ॥
āhvayasvēti māmuktvā
darṡayitvā ca vikramam ।
vairiṇā ghātayitvā ca
kimidānīṃ tvayā kṛtam ॥
You demonstrated your prowess,
told me to challenge him in fight
and left me to be beaten by the enemy.
Why did you do this?
4.12.27 தாமேவ வேலாம் வக்தவ்யம்
த்வயா ராகவ தத்த்வத: ।
வாலிநம் ந நிஹந்மீதி
ததோ நாஹமிதோ வ்ரஜே ॥
tāmēva vēlāṃ vaktavyam
tvayā rāghava tattvataḥ ।
vālinaṃ na nihanmīti
tatō nāhamitō vrajē ॥
You should have made it very clear right then,
O Rāghava, that you would not kill Vāli.
I would not have left this place at all!
4.12.28 தஸ்ய சைவம் ப்ருவாணஸ்ய
ஸுக்ரீவஸ்ய மஹாத்மந: ।
கருணம் தீநயா வாசா
ராகவ: புநரப்ரவீத் ॥
tasya caivaṃ bruvāṇasya
sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ ।
karuṇaṃ dīnayā vācā
rāghavaḥ punarabravīt ॥
To that Sugreeva, a Mahātma,
who spoke thus in a pitiable and doleful voice,
Rāghava said these words:
4.12.29 ஸுக்ரீவ ஸ்ரூயாதாம் தாத
க்ரோதஸ்ச வ்யபநீயதாம் ।
காரணம் யேந பாணோऽயம்
ந மயா ஸ விஸர்ஜித: ॥
sugrīva ṡrūyātāṃ tāta
krōdhaṡca vyapanīyatām ।
kāraṇaṃ yēna bāṇō'yam
na mayā sa visarjitaḥ ॥
My dear! May you not be angry with me!
I will tell the reason why
this arrow was not shot by me.
4.12.30 அலங்காரேண வேஷேண
ப்ரமாணேந கதேந ச ।
த்வம் ச ஸுக்ரீவ வாலீ ச
ஸத்ருஸௌ ஸ்த: பரஸ்பரம் ॥
alaṅkārēṇa vēṣēṇa
pramāṇēna gatēna ca ।
tvaṃ ca sugrīva vālī ca
sadṛṡau sthaḥ parasparam ॥
O Sugreeva, you and Vāli were exactly like each other
in height, in dress, in ornaments and in gait.
4.12.31 ஸ்வரேண வர்சஸா சைவ
ப்ரேக்ஷிதேந ச வாநர ।
விக்ரமேண ச வாக்யைஸ்ச
வ்யக்திம் வாம் நோபலக்ஷயே ॥
svarēṇa varcasā caiva
prēkṣitēna ca vānara ।
vikramēṇa ca vākyaiṡca
vyaktiṃ vāṃ nōpalakṣayē ॥
I could not see any difference, O Vānara,
between your voices, appearances, prowess and words.
4.12.32-33 ததோऽஹம் ரூபஸாத்ருஸ்யாத்
மோஹிதோ வாநரோத்தம ।
நோத்ஸ்ருஜாமி மஹாவேகம்
ஸரம் ஸத்ருநிபர்ஹணம் ।
ஜீவிதாந்தகரம் கோரம்
ஸாத்ருஸ்யாத்து விஸங்கித: ।
மூலகாதோ ந நௌ ஸ்யாத்தி
த்வயோரபி க்ருதோ மயா ॥
tatō'haṃ rūpasādṛṡyāt
mōhitō vānarōttama ।
nōtsṛjāmi mahāvēgam
ṡaraṃ ṡatrunibarhaṇam ।
jīvitāntakaraṃ ghōram
sādṛṡyāttu viṡaṅkitaḥ ।
mūlaghātō na nau syāddhi
dvayōrapi kṛtō mayā ॥
O eminent Vānara! Confused by
the resemblance in your appearances,
I refrained from discharging
my superfast dreadful arrow
that takes lives and destroys enemies;
not only unsure because of the resemblances,
but also because that would hurt both
of our interests right at the base. If Rāma kills Sugreeva accidentally, not only would it hurt Sugreeva’s interest, but also Rāma’s interest, as he would lose the only person he had, to help him find Seetā.
4.12.34-35a த்வயி வீரே விபந்நே ஹி
அஜ்ஞாநால்லாகவாந்மயா ।
மௌட்யம் ச மம பால்யம் ச
க்யாபிதம் ஸ்யாத்கபீஸ்வர ।
தத்தாபயவதோ நாம
பாதகம் மஹதுச்யதே ॥
tvayi vīrē vipannē hi
ajñānāllāghavānmayā ।
mauḍhyaṃ ca mama bālyaṃ ca
khyāpitaṃ syātkapīṡvara ।
dattābhayavadhō nāma
pātakaṃ mahaducyatē ॥
O lord of Vānaras! If you were to get into trouble
because of my ignorance or shortsightedness,
my stupidity and immaturity
will be talked everywhere.
It is considered an awful sin to kill
someone to whom protection is promised.
4.12.35b-36a அஹம் ச லக்ஷ்மணஸ்சைவ
ஸீதா ச வரவர்ணிநீ ।
த்வததீநா வயம் ஸர்வே
வநேऽஸ்மிந் ஸரணம் பவாந் ॥
ahaṃ ca lakṣmaṇaṡcaiva
sītā ca varavarṇinī ।
tvadadhīnā vayaṃ sarvē
vanē'smin ṡaraṇaṃ bhavān ॥
All of us, I, Lakshmaṇa as well as
Seetā of great complexion, are dependent on you.
You are the refuge for us in this Vana.
4.12.36b-37 தஸ்மாத்யுத்யஸ்வ பூயஸ்த்வம்
மா மா ஸங்கேஸ்ச வாநர ।
ஏதந்முஹூர்தே ஸுக்ரீவ
பஸ்ய வாலிநமாஹவே ।
நிரஸ்தமிஷுணைகேந
வேஷ்டமாநம் மஹீதலே ॥
tasmādyudhyasva bhūyastvam
mā mā ṡaṅkēṡca vānara ।
ētanmuhūrtē sugrīva
paṡya vālinamāhavē ।
nirastamiṣuṇaikēna
vēṣṭamānaṃ mahītalē ॥
Hence, go to the fight again.
Be no more skeptical of me, O Vānara!
Right in this Muhūrta, O Sugreeva,
see Vāli writhing on the ground in the great fight,
blown away by a single arrow of mine.
4.12.38 அபிஜ்ஞாநம் குருஷ்வ த்வம்
ஆத்மநோ வாநரேஸ்வர ।
யேந த்வாமபிஜாநீயாம்
த்வந்த்வயுத்தமுபாகதம் ॥
abhijñānaṃ kuruṣva tvam
ātmanō vānarēṡvara ।
yēna tvāmabhijānīyām
dvandvayuddhamupāgatam ॥
Adopt a distinguishing mark by which
I can recognize you, O lord of Vānaras,
when you are engaged in the duel.
4.12.39 கஜபுஷ்பீமிமாம் புல்லாம்
உத்பாட்ய ஸுபலக்ஷணாம் ।
குரு லக்ஷ்மண கண்டேऽஸ்ய
ஸுக்ரீவஸ்ய மஹாத்மந: ॥
gajapuṣpīmimāṃ phullām
utpāṭya ṡubhalakṣaṇām ।
kuru lakṣmaṇa kaṇṭhē'sya
sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ ॥
O Lakshmaṇa! Pull out this
Gajapushpa creeper that is in full flower,
and tie it round the neck of Mahātma Sugreeva!
4.12.40 ததோ கிரிதடே ஜாதாம்
உத்பாட்ய குஸுமாகுலாம் ।
லக்ஷ்மணோ கஜபுஷ்பீம் தாம்
தஸ்ய கண்டே வ்யஸர்ஜயத் ॥
tatō giritaṭē jātām
utpāṭya kusumākulām ।
lakṣmaṇō gajapuṣpīṃ tām
tasya kaṇṭhē vyasarjayat ॥
Then Lakshmaṇa went to the hill-side,
pulled a Gajapushpa creeper that was full of flowers
and put it round the neck (of Sugreeva).
4.12.41 ஸ தயா ஸுஸுபே ஸ்ரீமாந்
லதயா கண்டஸக்தயா ।
மாலயேவ பலாகாநாம்
ஸஸந்த்ய இவ தோயத: ॥
sa tayā ṡuṡubhē ṡrīmān
latayā kaṇṭhasaktayā ।
mālayēva balākānām
sasandhya iva tōyadaḥ ॥
With that creeper around his neck,
he, the blessed one, shone like
a cloud in the evening sky,
with a row of cranes for a garland.
4.12.42 விப்ராஜமாநோ வபுஷா
ராமவாக்யஸமாஹித: ।
ஜகாம ஸஹ ராமேண
கிஷ்கிந்தாம் புநராப ஸ: ॥
vibhrājamānō vapuṣā
rāmavākyasamāhitaḥ ।
jagāma saha rāmēṇa
kiṣkindhāṃ punarāpa saḥ ॥
With body gleaming and mind at ease with Rāma’s words,
he came back to Kishkindhā again along with Rāma.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
கிஷ்கிந்தாகாண்டே த்வாதஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
kiṣkindhākāṇḍē dvādaṡassargaḥ ॥

கிஷ்கிந்தாம் புநராப ஸ: ॥
vibhrājamānō vapuṣā
rāmavākyasamāhitaḥ ।
jagāma saha rāmēṇa
kiṣkindhāṃ punarāpa saḥ ॥
With body gleaming and mind at ease with Rāma’s words,
he came back to Kishkindhā again along with Rāma.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
கிஷ்கிந்தாகாண்டே த்வாதஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
kiṣkindhākāṇḍē dvādaṡassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the twelfth Sarga
