4.11.29 Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 11 Continues
மிதம் வ்யக்தாக்ஷரபதம்
தமுவாசாத துந்துபிம் ।
ஹரீணாமீஸ்வரோ வாலீ
ஸர்வேஷாம் வநசாரிணாம் ॥
mitaṃ vyaktākṣarapadam
tamuvācātha dundubhim ।
harīṇāmīṡvarō vālī
sarvēṣāṃ vanacāriṇām ॥
Vāli, the lord of Vānaras and
every creature that roamed the Vana
said a few, but clear, words to Dundhubhi:
4.11.30 கிமர்தம் நகரத்வாரம்
இதம் ருத்த்வா விநர்தஸி ।
துந்துபே விதிதோ மேऽஸி
ரக்ஷப்ராணாந்மஹாபல ॥
kimarthaṃ nagaradvāram
idaṃ rudhdvā vinardasi ।
dundubhē viditō mē'si
rakṣaprāṇānmahābala ॥
Why do you block the entrance
of the city and shout like this!
I know you are Dundhubhi!
O you of great strength, try to save your life!
4.11.31 தஸ்ய தத்வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா
வாநரேந்த்ரஸ்ய தீமத: ।
உவாச துந்துபிர்வாக்யம்
ரோஷாத்ஸம்ரக்தலோசந: ॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ ṡrutvā
vānarēndrasya dhīmataḥ ।
uvāca dundubhirvākyam
rōṣātsaṃraktalōcanaḥ ॥
Hearing those words of the
sagacious lord of Vānaras,
Dundhubhi said these words,
his eyes blood-red in rage:
4.11.32 ந த்வம் ஸ்த்ரீஸந்நிதௌ வீர
வசநம் வக்துமர்ஹஸி ।
மம யுத்தம் ப்ரயச்சாத்ய
ததோ ஜ்ஞாஸ்யாமி தே பலம் ॥
na tvaṃ strīsannidhau vīra
vacanaṃ vaktumarhasi ।
mama yuddhaṃ prayacchādya
tatō jñāsyāmi tē balam ॥
O Veera! You should not talk of
these matters in the presence of women.
Give me a fight and then I shall know your strength.
4.11.33 அதவா தாரயிஷ்யாமி
க்ரோதமத்ய நிஸாமிமாம் ।
க்ருஹ்யதாமுதயஸ்ஸ்வைரம்
காமபோகேஷு வாநர ॥
athavā dhārayiṣyāmi
krōdhamadya niṡāmimām ।
gṛhyatāmudayassvairam
kāmabhōgēṣu vānara ॥
Or, if you wish, O Vānara,
I can hold my rage for this night
and you can enjoy freely
the sensual pleasures till day break.
4.11.34 தீயதாம் ஸம்ப்ரதாநம் ச
பரிஷ்வஜ்ய ச வாநராந் ।
ஸர்வஸாகாம்ருகேந்த்ர ஸ்த்வம்
ஸம்ஸாதய ஸுஹ்ருஜ்ஜநாந் ॥
dīyatāṃ sampradānaṃ ca
pariṣvajya ca vānarān ।
sarvaṡākhāmṛgēndra stvam
saṃsādaya suhṛjjanān ॥
You, the lord of all beasts of the branches,
may give your love to the Vānaras
taking them into embrace and
bid good bye to all your friends.
4.11.35 ஸுத்ருஷ்டாம் குரு கிஷ்கிந்தாம்
குருஷ்வாத்மஸமம் புரே ।
க்ரீடஸ்வ ச ஸமம் ஸ்த்ரீபி:
அஹம் தே தர்பநாஸந: ॥
sudṛṣṭāṃ kuru kiṣkindhām
kuruṣvātmasamaṃ purē ।
krīḍasva ca samaṃ strībhiḥ
ahaṃ tē darpanāṡanaḥ ॥
Take (one last) good look at Kishkindhā.
Establish someone your equivalent in-charge of the city.
Also, go to your women and enjoy!
I am here to smash your pride.
4.11.36 யோ ஹி மத்தம் ப்ரமத்தம் வா
ஸுப்தம் வா ரஹிதம் க்ருஸம் ।
ஹந்யாத்ஸ ப்ரூணஹா லோகே
த்வத்விதம் மதமோஹிதம் ॥
yō hi mattaṃ pramattaṃ vā
suptaṃ vā rahitaṃ kṛṡam ।
hanyātsa bhrūṇahā lōkē
tvadvidhaṃ madamōhitam ॥
Killing someone who is intoxicated,
or caught unawares, or unarmed, or weak
is said to be the equivalent of killing an infant,
and so is killing of one suffering from hubris.
4.11.37 ஸ ப்ரஹஸ்யாப்ரவீந்மந்தம்
க்ரோதாத்தமஸுரோத்தமம் ।
விஸ்ருஜ்ய தா: ஸ்த்ரியஸ்ஸர்வா:
தாராப்ரப்ருதிகாஸ்ததா ॥
sa prahasyābravīnmandam
krōdhāttamasurōttamam ।
visṛjya tāḥ striyassarvāḥ
tārāprabhṛtikāstadā ॥
Then he (Vāli) laughed at that idiot,
sent away Tāra and all the other women
and responded to that eminent Asura in anger:
4.11.38 மத்தோऽயமிதி மா மம்ஸ்தா
யத்யபீதோऽஸி ஸம்யுகே ।
மதோऽயம் ஸம்ப்ரஹாரேऽஸ்மிந்
வீரபாநம் ஸமர்த்யதாம் ॥
mattō'yamiti mā maṃsthā
yadyabhītō'si saṃyugē ।
madō'yaṃ samprahārē'smin
vīrapānaṃ samarthyatām ॥
Do not take me to be intoxicated.
If you are not afraid of a fight,
you had better think that I have taken
the ceremonial shot of wine before going to war.
4.11.39 தமேவமுக்த்வா ஸங்க்ருத்தோ
மாலாமுத்க்ஷிப்ய காஞ்சநீம் ।
பித்ரா தத்தாம் மஹேந்த்ரேண
யுத்தாய வ்யவதிஷ்டத ॥
tamēvamuktvā saṅkṛddhō
mālāmutkṣipya kāñcanīm ।
pitrā dattāṃ mahēndrēṇa
yuddhāya vyavatiṣṭhata ॥
Saying this, greatly enraged,
putting on the golden chain
given by his father the great Indra,
he stood ready for combat.
4.11.40 விஷாணயோர்க்ருஹீத்வா தம்
துந்துபிம் கிரிஸந்நிபம் ।
ஆவித்யத ததா வாலீ
விநதந்கபிகுஞ்ஜர: ॥
viṣāṇayōrgṛhītvā tam
dundubhiṃ girisannibham ।
āvidhyata tadā vālī
vinadankapikuñjaraḥ ॥
Vāli, the elephant among Vānaras,
taking hold of Dundhubhi, who was like a mountain,
by the horns, flung him, letting off a roar.
4.11.41 வாலீ வ்யாபாதயாஞ்சக்ரே
நநர்த ச மஹாஸ்வநம் ।
ஸ்ரோத்ராப்யாமத ரக்தம் து
தஸ்ய ஸுஸ்ராவ பாத்யத: ॥
vālī vyāpātayāñcakrē
nanarda ca mahāsvanam ।
ṡrōtrābhyāmatha raktaṃ tu
tasya susrāva pātyataḥ ॥
Vāli, throwing him on the ground, let off a mighty roar.
As he fell, blood started flowing from his ears.
4.11.42 தயோஸ்து க்ரோதஸம்ரம்பாத்
பரஸ்பரஜயைஷிணோ: ।
யுத்தம் ஸமபவத்கோரம்
துந்துபேர்வாநரஸ்யச ॥
tayōstu krōdhasaṃrambhāt
parasparajayaiṣiṇōḥ ।
yuddhaṃ samabhavadghōram
dundubhērvānarasyaca ॥
Then there ensued a ferocious fight
between those two, Dundhubhi and Vānara,
both of whom were in a rage, bent on victory.
4.11.43 அயுத்த்யத ததா வாலீ
ஸக்ரதுல்யபராக்ரம: ।
முஷ்டிபிர்ஜாநுபிஸ்சைவ
ஸிலாபி: பாதபைஸ்ததா ॥
ayuddhyata tadā vālī
ṡakratulyaparākramaḥ ।
muṣṭibhirjānubhiṡcaiva
ṡilābhiḥ pādapaistathā ॥
Then Vāli, who equaled Ṡakra in valor,
fought with his fists, knees and feet,
hurling boulders and trees.
4.11.44 பரஸ்பரம் க்நதோ ஸ்தத்ர
வாநராஸுரயோஸ்ததா ।
ஆஸீத்தீநோऽஸுரோ யுத்தே
ஸக்ரஸூநுர்வ்யவர்தத ॥
parasparaṃ ghnatō statra
vānarāsurayōstadā ।
āsīddhīnō'surō yuddhē
ṡakrasūnurvyavardhata ॥
As the Vānara and Asura fought striking each other,
the strength of the Asura waned
while the strength of the son of Ṡakra waxed.
4.11.45 வ்யாபாரவீர்யதைர்யைஸ்ச
பரிக்ஷீணம் பராக்ரமை: ।
தம் து துந்துபிமுத்யம்ய
தரண்யாமப்யபாதயத் ॥
vyāpāravīryadhairyaiṡca
parikṣīṇaṃ parākramaiḥ ।
taṃ tu dundubhimudyamya
dharaṇyāmabhyapātayat ॥
Expending his strength, he lifted Dundhubhi
whose valor, grit and activity had weakened,
and tossed him on the ground.
4.11.46 யுத்தே ப்ராணஹரே தஸ்மிந்
நிஷ்பிஷ்டோ துந்துபிஸ்ததா ।
பபாத ச மஹாகாய:
க்ஷிதௌ பஞ்சத்வமாகத: ॥
yuddhē prāṇaharē tasmin
niṣpiṣṭō dundubhistadā ।
papāta ca mahākāyaḥ
kṣitau pañcatvamāgataḥ ॥
Dundhubhi was then smashed in
that fight that would but take one’s life.
He of huge hulk of a body then
fell dead on the ground.
4.11.47 தம் தோலயித்வா பாஹுப்யாம்
கதஸத்த்வமசேதநம் ।
சிக்ஷேப பலவாந்வாலீ
வேகேநைகேந யோஜநம் ॥
taṃ tōlayitvā bāhubhyām
gatasattvamacētanam ।
cikṣēpa balavānvālī
vēgēnaikēna yōjanam ॥
Then the strong Vāli lifted him,
who lay motionless with his life gone,
and threw him at great speed in one shot
to a distance of one full Yōjana.
4.11.48 தஸ்ய வேகப்ரவித்தஸ்ய
வக்த்ராத்க்ஷதஜபிந்தவ: ।
ப்ரபேதுர்மாருதோத்க்ஷிப்தா
மதங்கப்யாஸ்ரமம் ப்ரதி ॥
tasya vēgapraviddhasya
vaktrātkṣatajabindavaḥ ।
prapēturmārutōtkṣiptā
mataṅgapyāṡramaṃ prati ॥
As he was hurled at a great speed,
drops of blood from his mouth,
carried by the wind,
fell towards the Āṡrama of Mataṅga.
4.11.49 தாந்த்ருஷ்ட்வா பதிதாம்ஸ்தஸ்ய
முநிஸ்ஸோணிதவிப்ருஷ: ।
க்ருத்தஸ்தத்ர மஹாபாக
சிந்தயாமாஸ கோந்வயம் ॥
tāndṛṣṭvā patitāṃstasya
muniṡṡōṇitavipruṣaḥ ।
kruddhastatra mahābhāga
cintayāmāsa kōnvayam ॥
O blessed one! Seeing those drops of blood,
the muni became angry and wondered who that could be:
4.11.50 யேநாஹம் ஸஹஸா ஸ்ப்ருஷ்ட:
ஸோணிதேந துராத்மநா ।
கோऽயம் துராத்மா துர்புத்கி:
அக்ருதாத்மா ச பாலிஸ: ॥
yēnāhaṃ sahasā spṛṣṭaḥ
ṡōṇitēna durātmanā ।
kō'yaṃ durātmā durbhudghiḥ
akṛtātmā ca bāliṡaḥ ॥
Who is this fool, this
evil-hearted and evil-minded person,
who knows not what he does,
that has bespattered me with blood
all of a sudden?
4.11.51 இத்யுக்த்வாऽத விநிஷ்க்ரம்ய
ததர்ஸ முநிஸத்தம: ।
மஹிஷம் பர்வதாகாரம்
கதாஸும் பதிதம் புவி ॥
ityuktvā'tha viniṣkramya
dadarṡa munisattamaḥ ।
mahiṣaṃ parvatākāram
gatāsuṃ patitaṃ bhuvi ॥
Saying this (to himself), that eminent Muni
came out and saw the mountain-like buffalo
that was dead, fall on the ground.
4.11.52 ஸ து விஜ்ஞாய தபஸா
வாநரேண க்ருதம் ஹி தத் ।
உத்ஸஸர்ஜ மஹாஸாபம்
க்ஷேப்தாரம் வாலிநம் ப்ரதி ॥
sa tu vijñāya tapasā
vānarēṇa kṛtaṃ hi tat ।
utsasarja mahāṡāpam
kṣēptāraṃ vālinaṃ prati ॥
With the power of his Tapa, he became aware
that it was indeed done by a Vānara.
He let off a great curse
on Vāli, who had hurled (the buffalo).
4.11.53 இஹ தேநாப்ரவேஷ்டவ்யம்
ப்ரவிஷ்டஸ்ய வதோ பவேத் ।
வநம் மத்ஸம்ஸ்ரயம் யேந
தூஷிதம் ருதிரஸ்ரவை: ॥
iha tēnāpravēṣṭavyam
praviṣṭasya vadhō bhavēt ।
vanaṃ matsaṃṡrayaṃ yēna
dūṣitaṃ rudhirasravaiḥ ॥
Who ever has desecrated the Vana
that I made my residence, with drops of blood
shall not enter here; if he does, he will die.
4.11.54-55a க்ஷிபதா பாதபாஸ்சைமே
ஸம்பக்நாஸ்சாஸுரீம் தநும் ।
ஸமந்தாதாஸ்ரமம் பூர்ணம்
யோஜநம் மாமகம் யதி ॥
ஆகமிஷ்யதி துர்புத்தி:
வ்யக்தம் ஸ ந பவிஷ்யதி ।
kṣipatā pādapāṡcaimē
sambhagnāṡcāsurīṃ tanum ।
samantādāṡramaṃ pūrṇaṃ
yōjanaṃ māmakaṃ yadi ॥
āgamiṣyati durbuddhiḥ
vyaktaṃ sa na bhaviṣyati ।
Even these trees are broken
by the one who threw the body of the Asura.
May it be clear that if that wicked one enters
this Āṡrama area and a full Yōjana around it,
he will not stay alive.

vacanaṃ vaktumarhasi ।
mama yuddhaṃ prayacchādya
tatō jñāsyāmi tē balam ॥

krōdhamadya niṡāmimām ।
gṛhyatāmudayassvairam
kāmabhōgēṣu vānara ॥
Or, if you wish, O Vānara,

4.11.47 தம் தோலயித்வா பாஹுப்யாம்
கதஸத்த்வமசேதநம் ।
சிக்ஷேப பலவாந்வாலீ
வேகேநைகேந யோஜநம் ॥
taṃ tōlayitvā bāhubhyām
gatasattvamacētanam ।
cikṣēpa balavānvālī
vēgēnaikēna yōjanam ॥
Then the strong Vāli lifted him,
who lay motionless with his life gone,
and threw him at great speed in one shot
to a distance of one full Yōjana.
4.11.48 தஸ்ய வேகப்ரவித்தஸ்ய
வக்த்ராத்க்ஷதஜபிந்தவ: ।
ப்ரபேதுர்மாருதோத்க்ஷிப்தா
மதங்கப்யாஸ்ரமம் ப்ரதி ॥
tasya vēgapraviddhasya
vaktrātkṣatajabindavaḥ ।
prapēturmārutōtkṣiptā
mataṅgapyāṡramaṃ prati ॥
As he was hurled at a great speed,
drops of blood from his mouth,
carried by the wind,
fell towards the Āṡrama of Mataṅga.
4.11.49 தாந்த்ருஷ்ட்வா பதிதாம்ஸ்தஸ்ய
முநிஸ்ஸோணிதவிப்ருஷ: ।
க்ருத்தஸ்தத்ர மஹாபாக
சிந்தயாமாஸ கோந்வயம் ॥
tāndṛṣṭvā patitāṃstasya
muniṡṡōṇitavipruṣaḥ ।
kruddhastatra mahābhāga
cintayāmāsa kōnvayam ॥
O blessed one! Seeing those drops of blood,
the muni became angry and wondered who that could be:
4.11.50 யேநாஹம் ஸஹஸா ஸ்ப்ருஷ்ட:
ஸோணிதேந துராத்மநா ।
கோऽயம் துராத்மா துர்புத்கி:
அக்ருதாத்மா ச பாலிஸ: ॥
yēnāhaṃ sahasā spṛṣṭaḥ
ṡōṇitēna durātmanā ।
kō'yaṃ durātmā durbhudghiḥ
akṛtātmā ca bāliṡaḥ ॥
Who is this fool, this
evil-hearted and evil-minded person,
who knows not what he does,
that has bespattered me with blood
all of a sudden?
4.11.51 இத்யுக்த்வாऽத விநிஷ்க்ரம்ய
ததர்ஸ முநிஸத்தம: ।
மஹிஷம் பர்வதாகாரம்
கதாஸும் பதிதம் புவி ॥
ityuktvā'tha viniṣkramya
dadarṡa munisattamaḥ ।
mahiṣaṃ parvatākāram
gatāsuṃ patitaṃ bhuvi ॥
Saying this (to himself), that eminent Muni
came out and saw the mountain-like buffalo
that was dead, fall on the ground.
4.11.52 ஸ து விஜ்ஞாய தபஸா
வாநரேண க்ருதம் ஹி தத் ।
உத்ஸஸர்ஜ மஹாஸாபம்
க்ஷேப்தாரம் வாலிநம் ப்ரதி ॥
sa tu vijñāya tapasā
vānarēṇa kṛtaṃ hi tat ।
utsasarja mahāṡāpam
kṣēptāraṃ vālinaṃ prati ॥
With the power of his Tapa, he became aware
that it was indeed done by a Vānara.
He let off a great curse
on Vāli, who had hurled (the buffalo).
4.11.53 இஹ தேநாப்ரவேஷ்டவ்யம்
ப்ரவிஷ்டஸ்ய வதோ பவேத் ।
வநம் மத்ஸம்ஸ்ரயம் யேந
தூஷிதம் ருதிரஸ்ரவை: ॥
iha tēnāpravēṣṭavyam
praviṣṭasya vadhō bhavēt ।
vanaṃ matsaṃṡrayaṃ yēna
dūṣitaṃ rudhirasravaiḥ ॥
Who ever has desecrated the Vana
that I made my residence, with drops of blood
shall not enter here; if he does, he will die.
4.11.54-55a க்ஷிபதா பாதபாஸ்சைமே
ஸம்பக்நாஸ்சாஸுரீம் தநும் ।
ஸமந்தாதாஸ்ரமம் பூர்ணம்
யோஜநம் மாமகம் யதி ॥
ஆகமிஷ்யதி துர்புத்தி:
வ்யக்தம் ஸ ந பவிஷ்யதி ।
kṣipatā pādapāṡcaimē
sambhagnāṡcāsurīṃ tanum ।
samantādāṡramaṃ pūrṇaṃ
yōjanaṃ māmakaṃ yadi ॥
āgamiṣyati durbuddhiḥ
vyaktaṃ sa na bhaviṣyati ।
Even these trees are broken
by the one who threw the body of the Asura.
May it be clear that if that wicked one enters
this Āṡrama area and a full Yōjana around it,
he will not stay alive.
