4.10.22 ஸூதயித்வா து தம் ஸத்ரும்
விக்ராந்தம் துந்துபேஸ்ஸுதம் ।
நிஷ்க்ராமந்நேவ பஸ்யாமி
பிலஸ்ய பிஹிதம் முகம் ॥
sūdayitvā tu taṃ ṡatrum
vikrāntaṃ dundubhēssutam ।
niṣkrāmannēva paṡyāmi
bilasya pihitaṃ mukham ॥
Having slain my enemy, the valiant son of Dundhubhi,
I could not find the way out as
the mouth of the cave was blocked.
4.10.23 விக்ரோஸமாநஸ்ய து மே
ஸுக்ரீவேதி புந: புந: ।
யதா ப்ரதிவசோ நாஸ்தி
ததோऽஹம் ப்ருஸது:கித: ॥
vikrōṡamānasya tu mē
sugrīvēti punaḥ punaḥ ।
yadā prativacō nāsti
tatō'haṃ bhṛṡaduḥkhitaḥ ॥
I shouted aloud calling ‘Sugreeva!’ repeatedly,
but there was no reply and I became extremely miserable.
4.10.24 பாதப்ரஹாரைஸ்து மயா
பஹுபிஸ்தத்விதாரிதம் ।
ததோऽஹம் தேந நிஷ்க்ரம்ய
யதா புரமுபாகத: ॥
pādaprahāraistu mayā
bahubhistadvidāritam ।
tatō'haṃ tēna niṣkramya
yathā puramupāgataḥ ॥
With many a kick I shattered that barrier.
Then I got out and returned to the city.
4.10.25 தத்ராநேநாஸ்மி ஸம்ருத்தோ
ராஜ்யம் ம்ருகயதாऽऽத்மந: ।
ஸுக்ரீவேண ந்ருஸம்ஸேந
விஸ்ம்ருத்ய ப்ராத்ருஸௌஹ்ருதம் ॥
tatrānēnāsmi saṃruddhō
rājyaṃ mṛgayatā''tmanaḥ ।
sugrīvēṇa nṛṡaṃsēna
vismṛtya bhrātṛsauhṛdam ॥
Thus I was locked up there by this cruel Sugreeva,
who wanted this kingdom for himself,
disregarding affection that brothers owe to each other.
4.10.26 ஏவமுக்த்வா து மாம் தத்ர
வஸ்த்ரேணைகேந வாநர: ।
நிர்வாஸயாமாஸ ததா
வாலீ விகதஸாத்வஸ: ॥
ēvamuktvā tu māṃ tatra
vastrēṇaikēna vānaraḥ ।
nirvāsayāmāsa tadā
vālī vigatasādhvasaḥ ॥
Saying this, Vāli, the Vānara,
with no compunction whatsoever,
expelled me right then,
with just the single piece of
clothing (that was on me).
4.10.27 தேநாஹமபவித்தஸ்ச
ஹ்ருததாரஸ்ச ராகவ ।
தத்பயாச்ச மஹீக்ருத்ஸ்நா
க்ராந்தேயம் ஸவநார்ணவா ॥
tēnāhamapaviddhaṡca
hṛtadāraṡca rāghava ।
tadbhayāccha mahīkṛtsnā
krāntēyaṃ savanārṇavā ॥
Expelled by him, my wife taken away, and afraid of him,
I fled from place to place around
the entire earth, including all its forests and oceans.
4.10.28 ருஷ்யமூகம் கிரிவரம்
பார்யாஹரணது:கித: ।
ப்ரவிஷ்டோऽஸ்மி துராதர்ஷம்
வாலிந: காரணாந்தரே ॥
ṛṣyamūkaṃ girivaram
bhāryāharaṇaduḥkhitaḥ ।
praviṣṭō'smi durādharṣam
vālinaḥ kāraṇāntarē ॥
Saddened by the abduction of my wife,
I have taken refuge in this great mountain Ṛshyamūka,
which is forbidden ground to Vāli for certain reasons.
4.10.29 ஏதத்தே ஸர்வமாக்யாதம்
வைராநுகதநம் மஹத் ।
அநாகஸா மயா ப்ராப்தம்
வ்யஸநம் பஸ்ய ராகவ ॥
ētattē sarvamākhyātam
vairānukathanaṃ mahat ।
anāgasā mayā prāptam
vyasanaṃ paṡya rāghava ॥
Now I have told you the entire story about my great enmity.
See the suffering that befell on me, for no fault of mine! Sugreeva and Bharata are the two characters in Rāmāyaṇa that suffer for no fault of theirs, Sugreeva losing a kingdom and Bharata gaining a kingdom. Sugreeva earned everyone’s sympathy, but Bharata earned everyone’s suspicion, of having a hand in the entire episode.
Bharata lived under the shadow of suspicion for fourteen years, and Sugreeva suffered for an untold number of years.
Sugreeva had an honorable loss, but Bharata had a gain that put his honor and virtue in question, which is much harder to live with!
4.10.30 வாலிநஸ்து பயார்தஸ்ய
ஸர்வலோக பயாபஹ ।
கர்துமர்ஹஸி மே வீர
ப்ரஸாதம் தஸ்ய நிக்ரஹாத் ॥
vālinastu bhayārtasya
sarvalōka bhayāpaha ।
kartumarhasi mē vīra
prasādaṃ tasya nigrahāt ॥
O Veera! O you who remove the fear of all the worlds!
May you bestow your grace on me,
who is seized of fear of Vāli, and restrain him!
4.10.31 ஏவமுக்தஸ்ஸ தேஜஸ்வீ
தர்மஜ்ஞோ தர்மஸம்ஹிதம் ।
வசநம் வக்துமாரேபே
ஸுக்ரீவம் ப்ரஹஸந்நிவ ॥
ēvamuktassa tējasvī
dharmajñō dharmasaṃhitam ।
vacanaṃ vaktumārēbhē
sugrīvaṃ prahasanniva ॥
Thus besought, (Rāma) the powerful one who knew Dharma,
answered Sugreeva with a smile,
in these words buttressed by Dharma:
4.10.32 அமோகாஸ்ஸூர்யஸங்காஸா
மமைதே நிஸிதா ஸ்ஸரா: ।
தஸ்மிந்வாலிநி துர்வ்ருத்தே
பதிஷ்யந்தி ருஷாந்விதா: ॥
amōghāssūryasaṅkāṡā
mamaitē niṡitā ṡṡarāḥ ।
tasminvālini durvṛttē
patiṣyanti ruṣānvitāḥ ॥
These unfailing sharp and sun-bright arrows of mine,
shall fall on that evil Vāli with all the rage.
4.10.33 யாவத்தம் நாபிபஸ்யாமி
தவ பார்யாபஹாரிணம் ।
தாவத்ஸ ஜீவேத்பாபாத்மா
வாலீ சாரித்ரதூஷக: ॥
yāvattaṃ nābhipaṡyāmi
tava bhāryāpahāriṇam ।
tāvatsa jīvētpāpātmā
vālī cāritradūṣakaḥ ॥
The evil Vāli, the abductor of your wife,
who is guilty of setting a bad precedent,
shall live only until I set my eyes upon him.
4.10.34 ஆத்மாநுமாநாத்பஸ்யாமி
மக்நம் த்வாம் ஸோகஸாகரே ।
த்வாமஹம் தாரயிஷ்யாமி
காமம் ப்ராப்ஸ்யஸி புஷ்கலம் ॥
ātmānumānātpaṡyāmi
magnaṃ tvāṃ ṡōkasāgarē ।
tvāmahaṃ tārayiṣyāmi
kāmaṃ prāpsyasi puṣkalam ॥
I can understand the ocean of sorrow
that you are in, going by my own experience.
I shall ferry you out of it and
you shall have all that your heart desires.
4.10.35 தஸ்ய தத்வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா
ஹர்ஷபௌருஷவர்தநம் ।
ஸுக்ரீவ: பரமப்ரீத:
ஸுமஹத்வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ ṡrutvā
harṣapauruṣavardhanam ।
sugrīvaḥ paramaprītaḥ
sumahadvākyamabravīt ॥
Hearing those words that augured joy and self-confidence,
the extremely pleased Sugreeva said these pregnant words:
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
கிஷ்கிந்தாகாண்டே தஸமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
kiṣkindhākāṇḍē daṡamassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the tenth Sarga
in Kishkindhā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
