4.8.22-23
இமே ஹி மே மஹாவேகா:
பத்ரிணஸ்திக்மதேஜஸ: ।
கார்திகேயவநோத்பூதா:
ஸரா ஹேமவிபூஷிதா: ।
கங்கபத்ரபரிச்சந்நா
மஹேந்த்ராஸநிஸந்நிபா: ।
ஸுபர்வாணஸ்ஸுதீக்ஷ்ணாக்ரா:
ஸரோஷா புஜகா இவ ॥
imē hi mē mahāvēgāḥ
patriṇastigmatējasaḥ ।
kārtikēyavanōdbhūtāḥ
ṡarā hēmavibhūṣitāḥ ।
kaṅkapatraparicchannā
mahēndrāṡanisannibhāḥ ।
suparvāṇassutīkṣṇāgrāḥ
sarōṣā bhujagā iva ॥
These extremely sharp pointed and feathered shafts of mine,
decked with gold, Parvas smoothened at the joints,
made of reeds from the Vana where Kārtikēya was born,
exceedingly swift and fierce, speeded by the feathers of Kaṅka,
comparable to the thunderbolt of the great Indra
his like serpents.
4.8.24 வாலிஸம்ஜ்ஞமமித்ரம் தே
ப்ராதரம் க்ருதகில்பிஷம் ।
ஸரைர்விநிஹதம் பஸ்ய
விகீர்ணமிவ பர்வதம் ॥
vālisaṃjñamamitraṃ tē
bhrātaraṃ kṛtakilbiṣam ।
ṡarairvinihataṃ paṡya
vikīrṇamiva parvatam ॥
You shall see your enemy and brother
by the name of Vāli
who has committed a heinous offence,
fall like a mountain, slain by these arrows.
4.8.25 ராகவஸ்ய வசஸ்ஸ்ருத்வா
ஸுக்ரீவோ வாஹிநீபதி: ।
ப்ரஹர்ஷமதுலம் லேபே
ஸாது ஸாத்விதி சாப்ரவீத் ॥
rāghavasya vacaṡṡrutvā
sugrīvō vāhinīpatiḥ ।
praharṣamatulaṃ lēbhē
sādhu sādhviti cābravīt ॥
Hearing those words of Rāghava,
Sugreeva, the leader of the (Vānara) army,
was extremely delighted, and said ‘Great! Excellent!’
4.8.26 ராம ஸோகாபிபூதோऽஹம்
ஸோகார்தாநாம் பவாந்கதி: ।
வயஸ்ய இதி க்ருத்வா ஹி
த்வய்யஹம் பரிதேவயே ॥
rāma ṡōkābhibhūtō'ham
ṡōkārtānāṃ bhavāngatiḥ ।
vayasya iti kṛtvā hi
tvayyahaṃ paridēvayē ॥
I am overwhelmed with grief, O Rāma,
and you are the refuge of the grief-stricken.
It is because I look upon you as my friend
that I have come to you with my tale of woe.
4.8.27 த்வம் ஹி பாணிப்ரதாநேந
வயஸ்யோ மேऽக்நிஸாக்ஷிகம் ।
க்ருத: ப்ராணைர்பஹுமத:
ஸத்யேநாபி ஸபாமி தே ॥
tvaṃ hi pāṇipradānēna
vayasyō mē'gnisākṣikam ।
kṛtaḥ prāṇairbahumataḥ
satyēnāpi ṡapāmi tē ॥
You have, by giving me your hand in friendship
with the fire for witness, become my bosom friend
whom I value more than I do my own life;
I say this swearing on truth.
4.8.28 வயஸ்ய இதி க்ருத்வா ச
விஸ்ரப்த: ப்ரவதாம்யஹம் ।
து:கமந்தர்கதம் யந்மே
மநோ ஹரதி நித்யஸ: ॥
vayasya iti kṛtvā ca
visrabdhaḥ pravadāmyaham ।
duḥkhamantargataṃ yanmē
manō harati nityaṡaḥ ॥
And because you are my friend,
I confide in you and tell about the grief
that is eating out my heart from deep inside.
4.8.29 ஏதாவதுக்த்வா வசநம்
பாஷ்பதூஷிதலோசந: ।
பாஷ்போபஹதயா வாசா
நோச்சைஸ்ஸக்நோதி பாஷிதும் ॥
ētāvaduktvā vacanam
bāṣpadūṣitalōcanaḥ ।
bāṣpōpahatayā vācā
nōccaiṡṡaknōti bhāṣitum ॥
After saying all that he could,
his eyes blurred with tears,
he could not utter any more words aloud,
because his voice was choked with tears.
4.8.30 பாஷ்பவேகம் து ஸஹஸா
நதீவேகமிவாகதம் ।
தாரயாமாஸ தைர்யேண
ஸுக்ரீவோ ராமஸந்நிதௌ ॥
bāṣpavēgaṃ tu sahasā
nadīvēgamivāgatam ।
dhārayāmāsa dhairyēṇa
sugrīvō rāmasannidhau ॥
But summoning courage to his aid,
Sugreeva managed to stem the torrent of tears
that deluged him like a river in spate,
in the presence of Rāma.
4.8.31 ஸந்நிக்ருஹ்ய து தம் பாஷ்பம்
ப்ரம்ருஜ்ய நயநே ஸுபே ।
விநிஸ்ஸ்வஸ்ய ச தேஜஸ்வீ
ராகவம் வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ॥
sannigṛhya tu taṃ bāṣpam
pramṛjya nayanē ṡubhē ।
viniṡṡvasya ca tējasvī
rāghavaṃ vākyamabravīt ॥
Restraining his tears and wiping his fine eyes,
he of great strength, heaved a deep sigh
and said these words to Rāghava:
4.8.32 புராऽஹம் வாலிநா ராம
ராஜ்யாத்ஸ்வாதவரோபித: ।
பருஷாணி ச ஸம்ஸ்ராவ்ய
நிர்தூதோऽஸ்மி பலீயஸா ॥
purā'haṃ vālinā rāma
rājyātsvādavarōpitaḥ ।
paruṣāṇi ca saṃṡrāvya
nirdhūtō'smi balīyasā ॥
I have been dethroned by Vāli from my own kingdom
and was humiliated in terrible words
by him, the stronger (of the two of us).
4.8.33 ஹ்ருதா பார்யா ச மே தேந
ப்ராணேப்யோऽபி கரீயஸீ ।
ஸுஹ்ருதஸ்ச மதீயா யே
ஸம்யதா பந்தநேஷு தே ॥
hṛtā bhāryā ca mē tēna
prāṇēbhyō'pi garīyasī ।
suhṛdaṡca madīyā yē
saṃyatā bandhanēṣu tē ॥
My wife, who is more than life to me, was robbed,
and whoever else was friendly to me
were put in shackles by him.
4.8.34 யத்நவாம்ஸ்ச ஸுதுஷ்டாத்மா
மத்விநாஸாய ராகவ ।
பஹுஸஸ்தத்ப்ரயுக்தாஸ்ச
வாநரா நிஹதா மயா ॥
yatnavāṃṡca suduṣṭātmā
madvināṡāya rāghava ।
bahuṡastatprayuktāṡca
vānarā nihatā mayā ॥
O Rāghava! That exceedingly wicked one
tried his best to destroy me;
many Vānaras sent by him (to destroy me)
were killed successfully by me.
4.8.35 ஸங்கயா த்வேதயா சேஹ
த்ருஷ்ட்வா த்வாமபி ராகவ ।
நோபஸர்பாம்யஹம் பீதோ
பயே ஸர்வே ஹி பிப்யதி ॥
ṡaṅkayā tvētayā cēha
dṛṣṭvā tvāmapi rāghava ।
nōpasarpāmyahaṃ bhītō
bhayē sarvē hi bibhyati ॥
O Rāghava! It was because of this suspicion
that I was scared of, and did not approach even you;
everyone would be afraid when
there is cause for fear, would they not?
4.8.36 கேவலம் ஹி ஸஹாயா மே
ஹநுமத்ப்ரமுகாஸ்த்விமே ।
அதோऽஹம் தாரயாம்யத்ய
ப்ராணாந் க்ருச்ச்ரகதோऽபி ஸந் ॥
kēvalaṃ hi sahāyā mē
hanumatpramukhāstvimē ।
atō'haṃ dhārayāmyadya
prāṇān kṛcchragatō'pi san ॥
Only Hanumān and these others are my aids;
it is only because of them I manage to survive,
though in dire straits.
4.8.37 ஏதே ஹி கபயஸ்ஸ்நிக்தா
மாம் ரக்ஷந்தி ஸமந்தத: ।
ஸஹ கச்சந்தி கந்தவ்யே
நித்யம் திஷ்டந்தி ச ஸ்திதே ॥
ētē hi kapayassnigdhā
māṃ rakṣanti samantataḥ ।
saha gacchanti gantavyē
nityaṃ tiṣṭhanti ca sthitē ॥
These Vānaras, my loving friends, protect me on all sides;
they go with me where I must go,
and stay with me where I stay, always.
4.8.38 ஸங்க்ஷேபஸ்த்வேஷ மே ராம
கிமுக்த்வா விஸ்தரம் ஹி தே ।
ஸ மே ஜ்யேஷ்டோ ரிபுர்ப்ராதா
வாலீ விஸ்ருதபௌருஷ: ॥
saṅkṣēpastvēṣa mē rāma
kimuktvā vistaraṃ hi tē ।
sa mē jyēṣṭhō ripurbhrātā
vālī viṡrutapauruṣaḥ ॥
O Rāma! This, in brief, is my story,
and there is no point in elaborating further.
He, Vāli, my elder brother, known widely for his prowess,
is now my sworn enemy.
4.8.39 தத்விநாஸேऽபி மே து:கம்
ப்ரணஷ்டம் ஸ்யாதநந்தரம் ।
ஸுகம் மே ஜீவிதம் சைவ
தத்விநாஸநிபந்தநம் ॥
tadvināṡē'pi mē duḥkham
praṇaṣṭaṃ syādanantaram ।
sukhaṃ mē jīvitaṃ caiva
tadvināṡanibandhanam ॥
My hardships will vanish only after he is destroyed.
My life and my happiness are tied to his destruction.
4.8.40 ஏஷ மே ராம ஸோகாந்த:
ஸோகார்தேந நிவேதித: ।
து:கிதஸ்ஸுகிதோ வாபி
ஸக்யுர்நித்யம் ஸகா கதி: ॥
ēṣa mē rāma ṡōkāntaḥ
ṡōkārtēna nivēditaḥ ।
duḥkhitassukhitō vāpi
sakhyurnityaṃ sakhā gatiḥ ॥
I have put forth plainly how my grief could end,
in my despondency caused by that very grief.
A friend is the only recourse for a friend,
in adverse as well as in favorable times.
4.8.41 ஸ்ருத்வைதத்வசநம் ராம:
ஸுக்ரீவமிதமப்ரவீத் ।
கிம் நிமித்தமபூத்வைரம்
ஸ்ரோதுமிச்சாமி தத்த்வத: ॥
ṡrutvaitadvacanaṃ rāmaḥ
sugrīvamidamabravīt ।
kiṃ nimittamabhūdvairam
ṡrōtumicchāmi tattvataḥ ॥
Hearing those words,
Rāma said these words to Sugreeva:
‘How did this enmity arise?
I would like to know in detail’.
4.8.42 ஸுகம் ஹி காரணம் ஸ்ருத்வா
வைரஸ்ய தவ வாநர ।
ஆநந்தர்யாத்விதாஸ்யாமி
ஸம்ப்ரதார்ய பலாபலம் ॥
sukhaṃ hi kāraṇaṃ ṡrutvā
vairasya tava vānara ।
ānantaryādvidhāsyāmi
sampradhārya balābalam ॥
O Vānara! After listening
to the reason for your enmity,
and gauging the strengths and weaknesses,
I can easily and immediately
do what is to be done.
4.8.43 பலவாந் ஹி மமாமர்ஷ:
ஸ்ருத்வா த்வாமவமாநிதம் ।
வர்ததே ஹ்ருதயோத்கம்பீ
ப்ராவ்ருட்வேக இவாம்பஸ: ॥
balavān hi mamāmarṣaḥ
ṡrutvā tvāmavamānitam ।
vartatē hṛdayōtkampī
prāvṛḍvēga ivāmbhasaḥ ॥
Hearing the story of your humiliation,
my very being shakes with extreme rage
that rushes like water in rainy season.
4.8.44 ஹ்ருஷ்ட: கதய விஸ்ரப்தோ
யாவதாரோப்யதே தநு: ।
ஸ்ருஷ்டஸ்ச ஹி மயா பாணோ
நிரஸ்தஸ்ச ரிபுஸ்தவ ॥
hṛṣṭaḥ kathaya visrabdhō
yāvadārōpyatē dhanuḥ ।
sṛṣṭaṡca hi mayā bāṇō
nirastaṡca ripustava ॥
Lighten up and tell me, taking me into full confidence.
In no time, the arrow shot from my stringed bow
will see the extinction of your foe.
4.8.45 ஏவமுக்தஸ்து ஸுக்ரீவ:
காகுத்ஸ்தேந மஹாத்மநா ।
ப்ரஹர்ஷமதுலம் லேபே
சதுர்பிஸ்ஸஹ வாநரை: ॥
ēvamuktastu sugrīvaḥ
kākutsthēna mahātmanā ।
praharṣamatulaṃ lēbhē
caturbhissaha vānaraiḥ ॥
Thus assured by Mahātma Kākutstha,
Sugreeva, along with the other four Vānaras, was overjoyed.
4.8.46 தத: ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டவதந:
ஸுக்ரீவோ லக்ஷ்மணாக்ரஜே ।
வைரஸ்ய காரணம் தத்த்வம்
ஆக்யாதுமுபசக்ரமே ॥
tataḥ prahṛṣṭavadanaḥ
sugrīvō lakṣmaṇāgrajē ।
vairasya kāraṇaṃ tattvam
ākhyātumupacakramē ॥
And Sugreeva, with happiness evident on his face,
began narrating the cause of the enmity in detail
to that elder brother of Lakshmaṇa.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
கிஷ்கிந்தாகாண்டே அஷ்டமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
kiṣkindhākāṇḍē aṣṭamassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the eighth Sarga
in Kishkindhā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
