Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 8
In this Sarga, Sugreeva expresses his joy in gaining the friendship of Rāma, and how much it means to him. Sugreeva reflects on how each one would stand for the other in a friendship. Rāma echoes the same sentiment about friendship.
Sugreeva then tells Rāma, though hesitatingly, how he was humiliated by his brother, his wife was taken away from him, and how he was forced out of his own kingdom, and how he was managing to live with the help of a few trusted aides.
Sugreeva also tells Rāma that his brother Vāli had sent Vānaras many a time to destroy him, but he was able to kill them all. He also tells that he suspected Rāma also to be one sent by Vāli and that was the reason for his not approaching Rāma readily.
Rāma tells Sugreeva that the humiliation faced by Sugreeva moved him deeply, and assures that he will kill Vāli with his sharp arrows. Rāma asks Sugreeva about the background of their enmity in detail and Sugreeva begins to tell what had happened.
4.8.1 பரிதுஷ்டஸ்து ஸுக்ரீவ:
தேந வாக்யேந வாநர: ।
லக்ஷ்மணஸ்யாக்ரதோ ராமம்
இதம் வசநமப்ரவீத் ॥
parituṣṭastu sugrīvaḥ
tēna vākyēna vānaraḥ ।
lakṣmaṇasyāgratō rāmam
idaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥
Feeling very happy at his words,
Sugreeva, the Vānara said these words
to Rāma in the presence of Lakshmaṇa.
4.8.2 ஸர்வதாऽஹமநுக்ராஹ்யோ
தேவதாநாம் ந ஸம்ஸய: ।
உபபந்நோ குணோபேத:
ஸகா யஸ்ய பவாந்மம ॥
sarvathā'hamanugrāhyō
dēvatānāṃ na saṃṡayaḥ ।
upapannō guṇōpētaḥ
sakhā yasya bhavānmama ॥
Without a doubt, Dēvas have endowed me
with their grace in every possible way,
with you of great qualities becoming my friend.
4.8.3 ஸக்யம் கலு பவேத்ராம
ஸஹாயேந த்வயாऽநக ।
ஸுரராஜ்யமபி ப்ராப்தும்
ஸ்வராஜ்யம் கிம் புந: ப்ரபோ ॥
ṡakyaṃ khalu bhavēdrāma
sahāyēna tvayā'nagha ।
surarājyamapi prāptum
svarājyaṃ kiṃ punaḥ prabhō ॥
O Rāma, O sinless one! It is possible,
with your help, to obtain even the kingdom of Dēvas,
what to say of recovering one’s own?
4.8.4 ஸோऽஹம் ஸபாஜ்யோ பந்தூநாம்
ஸுஹ்ருதாம் சைவ ராகவ ।
யஸ்யாக்நிஸாக்ஷிகம் மித்ரம்
லப்தம் ராகவவம்ஸஜம் ॥
sō'haṃ sabhājyō bandhūnām
suhṛdāṃ caiva rāghava ।
yasyāgnisākṣikaṃ mitram
labdhaṃ rāghavavaṃṡajam ॥
I would gain the respect of my relations and friends,
having obtained someone born in the lineage of Raghu
for a friend, witnessed by lord Agni.
4.8.5 அஹமப்யநுரூபஸ்தே
வயஸ்யோ ஜ்ஞாஸ்யஸே ஸநை: ।
ந து வக்தும் ஸமர்தோऽஹம்
ஸ்வயமாத்மகதாந்குணாந் ॥
ahamapyanurūpastē
vayasyō jñāsyasē ṡanaiḥ ।
na tu vaktuṃ samarthō'ham
svayamātmagatānguṇān ॥
You would also know, over time,
I am a friend worthy of you;
I shall not sing my own praises.
4.8.6 மஹாத்மநாம் து பூயிஷ்டம்
த்வத்விதாநாம் க்ருதாத்மநாம் ।
நிஸ்சலா பவதி ப்ரீதி:
தைர்யமாத்மவதாமிவ ॥
mahātmanāṃ tu bhūyiṣṭham
tvadvidhānāṃ kṛtātmanām ।
niṡcalā bhavati prītiḥ
dhairyamātmavatāmiva ॥
Friendship of Mahātmas like you, who have won self-control,
is as steady as the courage of the man of steadfast will.
4.8.7 ரஜதம் வா ஸுவர்ணம் வா
வஸ்த்ராண்யாபரணாநி ச ।
அவிபக்தாநி ஸாதூநாம்
அவகச்சந்தி ஸாதவ: ॥
rajataṃ vā suvarṇaṃ vā
vastrāṇyābharaṇāni ca ।
avibhaktāni sādhūnām
avagacchanti sādhavaḥ ॥
Good people intrinsically understand that there is
no such distinction among them as ‘yours and mine’,
be it in relation to silver or gold or ornaments or clothing.
4.8.8 ஆட்யோ வாபி தரித்ரோ வா
து:கிதஸ்ஸுகிதோऽபி வா ।
நிர்தோஷோ வா ஸதோஷோ வா
வயஸ்ய: பரமா கதி: ॥
āḍhyō vāpi daridrō vā
duḥkhitassukhitō'pi vā ।
nirdōṣō vā sadōṣō vā
vayasyaḥ paramā gatiḥ ॥
A friend is one’s best resort (at any time),
be he wallowing in riches or be he penniless,
be he enjoying good times or bad times,
be he perfect or imperfect.
4.8.9 தநத்யாகஸ்ஸுகத்யாகோ
தேஸத்யாகோऽபி வாநக ।
வயஸ்யார்தே ப்ரவர்தந்தே
ஸ்நேஹம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா ததாவிதம் ॥
dhanatyāgassukhatyāgō
dēṡatyāgō'pi vānagha ।
vayasyārthē pravartantē
snēhaṃ dṛṣṭvā tathāvidham ॥
O sinless one! Those who
realize the nature of true friendship
do not hesitate to give up
wealth, happiness, or country
for the sake of a friend.
4.8.10 தத்ததேத்யப்ரவீத்ராம:
ஸுக்ரீவம் ப்ரியவாதிநம் ।
லக்ஷ்மணஸ்யாக்ரதோ லக்ஷ்ம்யா
வாஸவஸ்யேவ தீமத: ॥
tattathētyabravīdrāmaḥ
sugrīvaṃ priyavādinam ।
lakṣmaṇasyāgratō lakṣmyā
vāsavasyēva dhīmataḥ ॥
‘That is certainly so!’, agreed Rāma,
answering Sugreeva who spoke so pleasingly,
in the presence of the sagacious Lakshmaṇa
who was as resplendent as Indra.
4.8.11 ததோ ராமம் ஸ்திதம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
லக்ஷ்மணம் ச மஹாபலம் ।
ஸுக்ரீவஸ்ஸர்வதஸ்சக்ஷு:
வநே லோலமபாதயத் ॥
tatō rāmaṃ sthitaṃ dṛṣṭvā
lakṣmaṇaṃ ca mahābalam ।
sugrīvassarvataṡcakṣuḥ
vanē lōlamapātayat ॥
Seeing that Rāma and the mighty strong Lakshmaṇa
were both standing, Sugreeva looked around the Vana
in all directions with his roving eye.
4.8.12 ஸ ததர்ஸ ததஸ்ஸாலம்
அவிதூரே ஹரீஸ்வர: ।
ஸுபுஷ்பமீஷத்பத்ராட்யம்
ப்ரமரைருபஸோபிதம் ॥
sa dadarṡa tatassālam
avidūrē harīṡvaraḥ ।
supuṣpamīṣatpatrāḍhyam
bhramarairupaṡōbhitam ॥
Then the lord of Vānaras saw
a Sāla tree, not far from there,
that is full of flowers and a few leaves
and attractive with bees that haunted it.
4.8.13 தஸ்யைகாம் பர்ணபஹுலாம்
பங்க்த்வா ஸாகாம் ஸுபுஷ்பிதாம் ।
ஸாலஸ்யாஸ்தீர்ய ஸுக்ரீவோ
நிஷஸாத ஸராகவ: ॥
tasyaikāṃ parṇabahulām
bhaṅktvā ṡākhāṃ supuṣpitām ।
sālasyāstīrya sugrīvō
niṣasāda sarāghavaḥ ॥
Breaking off one of its branches
laden with flowers and as many leaves,
Sugreeva spread it on the ground
and sat on it along with Rāghava.
4.8.14 தாவாஸீநௌ ததோ த்ருஷ்ட்வா
ஹநூமாநபி லக்ஷ்மணம் ।
ஸாலஸாகாம் ஸமுத்பாட்ய
விநீதமுபவேஸயத் ॥
tāvāsīnau tatō dṛṣṭvā
hanūmānapi lakṣmaṇam ।
sālaṡākhāṃ samutpāṭya
vinītamupavēṡayat ॥
Seeing them seated, Hanumān broke off
another branch of the Sāla tree and
offered it for a seat to Lakshmaṇa, the modest one.
4.8.15-16 ஸுகோபவிஷ்டம் ராமம் து
ப்ரஸந்நமுததிம் யதா ।
பலபுஷ்பஸமாகீர்ணே
தஸ்மிந் கிரிவரோத்தமே ।
தத: ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டஸ்ஸுக்ரீவ:
ஸ்லக்ஷ்ணம் மதுரயா கிரா ।
உவாச ப்ரணயாத்ராமம்
ஹர்ஷவ்யாகுலிதாக்ஷரம் ॥
sukhōpaviṣṭaṃ rāmaṃ tu
prasannamudadhiṃ yathā ।
phalapuṣpasamākīrṇē
tasmin girivarōttamē ।
tataḥ prahṛṣṭassugrīvaḥ
ṡlakṣṇaṃ madhurayā girā ।
uvāca praṇayādrāmam
harṣavyākulitākṣaram ॥
When Rāma, who was serene like the calm sea,
had settled down comfortably in his seat
on that best of mountains that abounded in fruit and flower,
Sugreeva, who was very happy,
spoke to him out of affection
these words in a sweet and gentle tone,
punctuated only by bouts of joy.
4.8.17 அஹம் விநிக்ருதோ ப்ராத்ரா
சராம்யேஷ பயார்தித: ।
ருஷ்யமூகம் கிரிவரம்
ஹ்ருதபார்யஸ்ஸுது:கித: ॥
ahaṃ vinikṛtō bhrātrā
carāmyēṣa bhayārditaḥ ।
ṛṣyamūkaṃ girivaram
hṛtabhāryassuduḥkhitaḥ ॥
Humiliated by my brother, wife abducted,
bitterly grieving, I wander, haunted by fear,
on this Ṛshyamūka, a great mountain.
4.8.18 ஸோऽஹம் த்ரஸ்தோ பயே மக்நோ
வஸாம்யுத்ப்ராந்தசேதந: ।
வாலிநா நிக்ருதோ ப்ராத்ரா
க்ருதவைரஸ்ச ராகவ ॥
sō'haṃ trastō bhayē magnō
vasāmyudbhrāntacētanaḥ ।
vālinā nikṛtō bhrātrā
kṛtavairaṡca rāghava ॥
Scared, deeply in fear,
humiliated by my brother Vāli, my implacable enemy,
I live with my mind completely disoriented.
4.8.19 வாலிநோ மே பயார்தஸ்ய
ஸர்வலோகாபயங்கர ।
மமாபி த்வமநாதஸ்ய
ப்ரஸாதம் கர்துமர்ஹஸி ॥
vālinō mē bhayārtasya
sarvalōkābhayaṅkara ।
mamāpi tvamanāthasya
prasādaṃ kartumarhasi ॥
You, who can redeem all the worlds from fear,
should bestow your grace upon me,
wallowing in the fear of Vāli as I am
with no other recourse whatsoever.
4.8.20 ஏவமுக்தஸ்து தேஜஸ்வீ
தர்மஜ்ஞோ தர்மவத்ஸல: ।
ப்ரத்யுவாச ஸ காகுத்ஸ்த:
ஸுக்ரீவம் ப்ரஹஸந்நிவ ॥
ēvamuktastu tējasvī
dharmajñō dharmavatsalaḥ ।
pratyuvāca sa kākutsthaḥ
sugrīvaṃ prahasanniva ॥
Thus besought, the powerful Kakutstha,
who also knew Dharma and loved it,
replied to Sugreeva with a smile:
4.8.21 உபகாரபலம் மித்ரம்
அபகாரோऽரிலக்ஷணம் ।
அத்யைவ தம் வதிஷ்யாமி
தவ பார்யாபஹாரிணம் ॥
upakāraphalaṃ mitram
apakārō'rilakṣaṇam ।
adyaiva taṃ vadhiṣyāmi
tava bhāryāpahāriṇam ॥
It is in the nature of a friend to be of help
and in the nature of an enemy to cause damage.
This very day I shall kill the one
who has robbed your wife.

pratyuvāca sa kākutsthaḥ
sugrīvaṃ prahasanniva ॥
Thus besought, the powerful Kakutstha,
who also knew Dharma and loved it,
replied to Sugreeva with a smile:
4.8.21 உபகாரபலம் மித்ரம்
அபகாரோऽரிலக்ஷணம் ।
அத்யைவ தம் வதிஷ்யாமி
தவ பார்யாபஹாரிணம் ॥
upakāraphalaṃ mitram
apakārō'rilakṣaṇam ।
adyaiva taṃ vadhiṣyāmi
tava bhāryāpahāriṇam ॥
It is in the nature of a friend to be of help
and in the nature of an enemy to cause damage.
This very day I shall kill the one
who has robbed your wife.
