Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 7
In this Sarga Sugreeva tells Rāma that he knows nothing about the Rakshasa, but will do everything required to fetch Maithili and assist Rāma in killing Rāvaṇa and his hordes.
Sugreeva pleads in many words with Rāma to give up his grief and regain his self-confidence. He tells Rāma that the despondency he shows is unbecoming of him. Sugreeva shows himself as an example of someone who has met with the similar fate, with his wife abducted and he himself driven out of the kingdom, but able to hold himself up without losing self-confidence.
Rāma feels better hearing those words and thanks Sugreeva for consoling him. Rāma also tells Sugreeva that he would do whatever Sugreeva asks him to do. Sugreeva also feels better and considers his object is as good as achieved.
4.7.1 ஏவமுக்தஸ்து ஸுக்ரீவோ
ராமேணார்தேந வாநர: ।
அப்ரவீத்ப்ராஞ்ஜலிர்வாக்யம்
ஸபாஷ்பம் பாஷ்பகத்கத: ॥
ēvamuktastu sugrīvō
rāmēṇārtēna vānaraḥ ।
abravītprāñjalirvākyam
sabāṣpaṃ bāṣpagadgadaḥ ॥
When Rāma asked thus in agony,
Sugreeva the Vānara, in tears, said these words
with joined palms and in tear-choked voice:
4.7.2 ந ஜாநே நிலயம் தஸ்ய
ஸர்வதா பாபரக்ஷஸ: ।
ஸாமர்த்யம் விக்ரமம் வாபி
தௌஷ்குலேயஸ்ய வா குலம் ॥
na jānē nilayaṃ tasya
sarvathā pāparakṣasaḥ ।
sāmarthyaṃ vikramaṃ vāpi
dauṣkulēyasya vā kulam ॥
I know nothing of that evil Rākshasa
or his wretched lineage or his prowess
or his abilities or where he lives.
4.7.3 ஸத்யம் தே ப்ரதிஜாநாமி
த்யஜ ஸோகமரிந்தம ।
கரிஷ்யாமி ததா யத்நம்
யதா ப்ராப்ஸ்யஸி மைதிலீம் ॥
satyaṃ tē pratijānāmi
tyaja ṡōkamarindama ।
kariṣyāmi tathā yatnam
yathā prāpsyasi maithilīm ॥
But, O subduer of foes, I promise
that I will do everything required to fetch Maithili.
Please abdicate your grief!
4.7.4 ராவணம் ஸகணம் ஹத்வா
பரிதோஷ்யாத்மபௌருஷம் ।
ததாऽஸ்மி கர்தா ந சிராத்
யதா ப்ரீதோ பவிஷ்யஸி ॥
rāvaṇaṃ sagaṇaṃ hatvā
paritōṣyātmapauruṣam ।
tathā'smi kartā na cirāt
yathā prītō bhaviṣyasi ॥
I shall do everything needed, in all urgency,
for you to kill Rāvaṇa along with his hordes
and be happy, with your self-pride restored.
4.7.5 அலம் வைக்லப்யமாலம்ப்ய
தைர்யமாத்மகதம் ஸ்மர ।
த்வத்விதாநாம் ந ஸத்ருஸம்
ஈத்ருஸம் புத்திலாகவம். ॥
alaṃ vaiklabyamālambya
dhairyamātmagataṃ smara ।
tvadvidhānāṃ na sadṛṡam
īdṛṡaṃ buddhilāghavam. ॥
No more harboring of despondency!
Think of the courage that is innate to you.
Such infirmity of will is unbecoming to the likes of you.
4.7.6 மயாऽபி வ்யஸநம் ப்ராப்தம்
பார்யாவிரஹஜம் மஹத் ।
நாஹமேவம் ஹி ஸோசாமி
ந ச தைர்யம் பரித்யஜே ॥
mayā'pi vyasanaṃ prāptam
bhāryāvirahajaṃ mahat ।
nāhamēvaṃ hi ṡōcāmi
na ca dhairyaṃ parityajē ॥
I too have suffered intensely, bereaved of my wife;
but I do not grieve, nor do I lose my self-confidence. Sugreeva is in the same situation as Rāma, only for longer. Hence he is the right person to advise Rāma. He understands what Rāma is going through like nobody else can.
4.7.7 நாஹம் தாமநுஸோசாமி
ப்ராக்ருதோ வாநரோऽபி ஸந் ।
மஹாத்மா ச விநீதஸ்ச
கிம் புநர்த்ருதிமாந்பவாந் ॥
nāhaṃ tāmanuṡōcāmi
prākṛtō vānarō'pi san ।
mahātmā ca vinītaṡca
kiṃ punardhṛtimānbhavān ॥
Even being the ordinary Vānara that I am,
I did not succumb to worry;
what to say of you, a learned and stoic Mahātma!
4.7.8 பாஷ்பமாபதிதம் தைர்யாத்
நிக்ரஹீதும் த்வமர்ஹஸி ।
மர்யாதாம் ஸத்த்வயுக்தாநாம்
த்ருதிம் நோத்ஸ்ரஷ்டுமர்ஹஸி ॥
bāṣpamāpatitaṃ dhairyāt
nigrahītuṃ tvamarhasi ।
maryādāṃ sattvayuktānām
dhṛtiṃ nōtsraṣṭumarhasi ॥
You should regain your composure and
hold the tears from flowing.
Rely on your steadfastness and let the
dignity of a capable one like you, not slip off.
4.7.9 வ்யஸநே வாऽர்தக்ருச்ச்ரே வா
பயே வா ஜீவிதாந்தகே ।
விம்ருஸந்வை ஸ்வயா புத்த்யா
த்ருதிமாந்நாவஸீததி ॥
vyasanē vā'rthakṛcchrē vā
bhayē vā jīvitāntakē ।
vimṛṡanvai svayā buddhyā
dhṛtimānnāvasīdati ॥
Even at the time of hardships or loss of riches
or fear of losing life, one who is steady at heart
would not let oneself sink low,
but ponder over things carefully!
4.7.10 பாலிஸஸ்து நரோ நித்யம்
வைக்லப்யம் யோऽநுவர்ததே ।
ஸ மஜ்ஜத்யவஸஸ்ஸோகே
பாராக்ராந்தேவ நௌர்ஜலே ॥
bāliṡastu narō nityam
vaiklabyaṃ yō'nuvartatē ।
sa majjatyavaṡaṡṡōkē
bhārākrāntēva naurjalē ॥
One has to be stupid to let
depression takeover forever.
Such a person would easily sink in grief
like a heavily loaded boat in water.
4.7.11 ஏஷோऽஞ்ஜலிர்மயா பத்த:
ப்ரணயாத்த்வாம் ப்ரஸாதயே ।
பௌருஷம் ஸ்ரய ஸோகஸ்ய
நாந்தரம் தாதுமர்ஹஸி ॥
ēṣō'ñjalirmayā baddhaḥ
praṇayāttvāṃ prasādayē ।
pauruṣaṃ ṡraya ṡōkasya
nāntaraṃ dātumarhasi ॥
I beg you with joined palms,
it is my love that makes me beseech you
not to give way to grief,
but to place your trust in valor.
4.7.12 யே ஸோகமநுவர்தந்தே
ந தேஷாம் வித்யதே ஸுகம் ।
தேஜஸ்ச க்ஷீயதே தேஷாம்
ந த்வம் ஸோசிதுமர்ஹஸி ॥
yē ṡōkamanuvartantē
na tēṣāṃ vidyatē sukham ।
tējaṡca kṣīyatē tēṣām
na tvaṃ ṡōcitumarhasi ॥
Those who cling to grief will know no happiness;
their strength will decay;
hence you should not succumb to worry.
4.7.13 ஸோகேநாபிப்ரபந்நஸ்ய
ஜீவிதே சாபி ஸம்ஸய: ।
ஸ ஸோகம் த்யஜ ராஜேந்த்ர
தைர்யமாஸ்ரய கேவலம் ॥
ṡōkēnābhiprapannasya
jīvitē cāpi saṃṡayaḥ ।
sa ṡōkaṃ tyaja rājēndra
dhairyamāṡraya kēvalam ॥
Once taken over by grief,
one becomes disillusioned with life.
Hence, O lord of kings,
give up grief and rely on your self-confidence.
4.7.14 ஹிதம் வயஸ்யபாவேந
ப்ரூமி நோபதிஸாமி தே ।
வயஸ்யதாம் பூஜயந்மே
ந த்வம் ஸோசிதுமர்ஹஸி ॥
hitaṃ vayasyabhāvēna
brūmi nōpadiṡāmi tē ।
vayasyatāṃ pūjayanmē
na tvaṃ ṡōcitumarhasi ॥
I am not preaching to you, but only
saying what is good for you, like a friend.
You must give up grieving
respecting my friendly insistence.
4.7.15 மதுரம் ஸாந்த்விதஸ்தேந
ஸுக்ரீவேண ஸ ராகவ: ।
முகமஸ்ருபரிக்லிந்நம்
வஸ்த்ராந்தேந ப்ரமார்ஜயத் ॥
madhuraṃ sāntvitastēna
sugrīvēṇa sa rāghavaḥ ।
mukhamaṡrupariklinnam
vastrāntēna pramārjayat ॥
Thus consoled by Sugreeva in sweet words,
Rāghava, with the hem of his garment,
wiped his face that was wet all over with tears.
4.7.16 ப்ரக்ருதிஸ்தஸ்து காகுத்ஸ்த:
ஸுக்ரீவவசநாத்ப்ரபு: ।
ஸம்பரிஷ்வஜ்ய ஸுக்ரீவம்
இதம் வசநமப்ரவீத் ॥
prakṛtisthastu kākutsthaḥ
sugrīvavacanātprabhuḥ ।
sampariṣvajya sugrīvam
idaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥
Kākutstha, the lord, regained normalcy
with those words of Sugreeva.
He embraced Sugreeva and said these words:
4.7.17 கர்தவ்யம் யத்வயஸ்யேந
ஸ்நிக்தேந ச ஹிதேந ச ।
அநுரூபம் ச யுக்தம் ச
க்ருதம் ஸுக்ரீவ தத்த்வயா ॥
kartavyaṃ yadvayasyēna
snigdhēna ca hitēna ca ।
anurūpaṃ ca yuktaṃ ca
kṛtaṃ sugrīva tattvayā ॥
You have done, Sugreeva, whatever is expected
of a loving and well-wishing friend,
which is timely and apt as well.
4.7.18 ஏஷ ச ப்ரக்ருதிஸ்தோऽஹம்
அநுநீதஸ்த்வயா ஸகே ।
துர்லபோ ஹீத்ருஸோ பந்து:
அரஸ்மிந்காலே விஸேஷத: ॥
ēṣa ca prakṛtisthō'ham
anunītastvayā sakhē ।
durlabhō hīdṛṡō bandhuḥ
arasminkālē viṡēṣataḥ ॥
I feel normal again, my friend, consoled by you.
Rare indeed is a well-wisher like you,
especially in these times. Interesting, ‘especially in these times’ is not just a phrase of modern times. It was in use even in the days of Rāma!
4.7.19 கிம் து யத்நஸ்த்வயா கார்யோ
மைதில்யா: பரிமார்கணே ।
ராக்ஷஸஸ்ய ச ரௌத்ரஸ்ய
ராவணஸ்ய துராத்மந: ॥
kiṃ tu yatnastvayā kāryō
maithilyāḥ parimārgaṇē ।
rākṣasasya ca raudrasya
rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ ॥
But you shall try searching for Maithili
and Rāvaṇa, that fierce and evil Rākshasa.
4.7.20 மயா ச யதநுஷ்டேயம்
விஸ்ரப்தேந ததுச்யதாம் ।
வர்ஷாஸ்விவ ச ஸுக்ஷேத்ரே
ஸர்வம் ஸம்பத்யதே தவ ॥
mayā ca yadanuṣṭhēyam
visrabdhēna taducyatām ।
varṣāsviva ca sukṣētrē
sarvaṃ sampadyatē tava ॥
You should also tell me, with complete trust,
what I should do (for you).
All your efforts will bear fruit,
like seeds sown in a fertile soil in rainy season.
4.7.21 மயா ச யதிதம் வாக்யம்
அபிமாநாத்ஸமீரிதம் ।
தத்த்வயா ஹரிஸார்தூல
தத்த்வமித்யுபதார்யதாம் ॥
mayā ca yadidaṃ vākyam
abhimānātsamīritam ।
tattvayā hariṡārdūla
tattvamityupadhāryatām ॥
These words that I say out of love for you,
should be considered, O tiger among Vānaras,
as spoken with utmost sincerity.
4.7.22 அந்ருதம் நோக்தபூர்வம் மே
ந ச வக்ஷ்யே கதாசந ।
ஏதத்தே ப்ரதிஜாநாமி
ஸத்யேநைவ ஸபாம்யஹமம் ॥
anṛtaṃ nōktapūrvaṃ mē
na ca vakṣyē kadācana ।
ētattē pratijānāmi
satyēnaiva ṡapāmyahamaṃ ॥
I have never said what I do not mean, and never shall.
I promise this to you, swearing on truth.
4.7.23 தத: ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டஸ்ஸுக்ரீவோ
வாநரைஸ்ஸசிவைஸ்ஸஹ ।
ராகவஸ்ய வசஸ்ஸ்ருத்வா
ப்ரதிஜ்ஞாதம் விஸேஷத: ॥
tataḥ prahṛṣṭassugrīvō
vānaraissacivaissaha ।
rāghavasya vacaṡṡrutvā
pratijñātaṃ viṡēṣataḥ ॥
Hearing those words of Rāghava,
reinforced as they were by his solemn pledge,
Sugreeva and his ministers were vastly pleased.
4.7.24 ஏவமேகாந்தஸம்ப்ருக்தௌ
ததஸ்தௌ நரவாநரௌ ।
உபாவந்யோந்யஸத்ருஸம்
ஸுகம் து:கமபாஷதாம் ॥
ēvamēkāntasampṛktau
tatastau naravānarau ।
ubhāvanyōnyasadṛṡam
sukhaṃ duḥkhamabhāṣatām ॥
Then they, the human and the Vānara,
having much in common with each other,
spent time in private, discussing
their fortunes and misfortunes.
4.7.25 மஹாநுபாவஸ்ய வசோ நிஸம்ய
ஹரிர்ந்ருபாணாம்ருஷபஸ்ய தஸ்ய ।
க்ருதம் ஸ மேநே ஹரிவீரமுக்ய:
ததா ஸ்வகார்யம் ஹ்ருதயேந வித்வாந் ॥
mahānubhāvasya vacō niṡamya
harirnṛpāṇāmṛṣabhasya tasya ।
kṛtaṃ sa mēnē harivīramukhyaḥ
tadā svakāryaṃ hṛdayēna vidvān ॥
Hearing the words of that magnanimous bull among kings,
the Vānara, foremost of the Vānara warriors,
knew in his heart of hearts that
his purpose was as good as achieved.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
கிஷ்கிந்தாகாண்டே ஸப்தமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
kiṣkindhākāṇḍē saptamassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the seventh Sarga
in Kishkindhā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
