Kishkindha Kaanda - Sarga 1
In this Sarga, the gorgeous spring, with all the trees in bloom, and with the amorous birds calling each other and many a deer playing with its mate, proves to be a curse to Rāma who is missing his beloved, with whom he had enjoyed many such springs earlier. Rāma feels dejected and does not see himself continuing to live on without his beloved, and guesses that Seetā must be feeling the same. Lakshmaṇa strokes him saying that he should not yield to the passions raised in him by the spring, but should focus on the task ahead and tells that there is nothing impossible for one who is motivated.
Meanwhile Sugreeva and other Vānaras see the imposing Rāma and Lakshmana walking towards them and get scared. Sugreeva stands still, motionless. Other Vānaras retreat to their Āṡrama, where they gather usually.
4.1.1 ஸ தாம் புஷ்கரிணீம் கத்வா
பத்மோத்பலஜஷாகுலாம் ।
ராமஸ்ஸௌமித்ரி ஸஹிதோ
விலலாபாகுலேந்த்ரிய: ॥
sa tāṃ puṣkariṇīṃ gatvā
padmōtpalajhaṣākulām ।
rāmassaumitri sahitō
vilalāpākulēndriyaḥ ॥
Rāma, after thus reaching the lake
that was full of lotuses and lilies
and teeming with fish,
along with Sowmitri,
felt greatly agitated, and lamented.
4.1.2 தத்ர த்ருஷ்ட்வைவ தாம் ஹர்ஷாத்
இந்த்ரியாணி சகம்பிரே ।
ஸ காமவஸமாபந்ந:
ஸௌமித்ரிமிதமப்ரவீத் ॥
tatra dṛṣṭvaiva tāṃ harṣāt
indriyāṇi cakampirē ।
sa kāmavaṡamāpannaḥ
saumitrimidamabravīt ॥
His senses were invigorated with delight,
at the very sight of that lake.
He felt an intense sense of longing (for Seetā)
and said these words to Sowmitri:
4.1.3 ஸௌமித்ரே ஸோபதே பம்பா
வைடூர்யவிமலோதகா ।
புல்லபத்மோத்பலவதீ
ஸோபிதா விவிதைர்த்ருமை: ॥
saumitrē ṡōbhatē pampā
vaiḍhūryavimalōdakā ।
phullapadmōtpalavatī
ṡōbhitā vividhairdrumaiḥ ॥
O Sowmitri! See the splendid Pampa
with its water clear as lazulite!
It is resplendent with lotuses and lilies in bloom,
and with trees of many kinds.
4.1.4 ஸௌமித்ரே பஸ்ய பம்பாயா:
காநநம் ஸுபதர்ஸநம் ।
யத்ர ராஜந்தி ஸைலாபா
த்ருமாஸ்ஸஸிகரா இவ ॥
saumitrē paṡya pampāyāḥ
kānanaṃ ṡubhadarṡanam ।
yatra rājanti ṡailābhā
drumāssaṡikharā iva ॥
O Sowmitri! Look at the woods of the Pampa,
which are a feast to the eyes,
with trees rising high like
mountains with lofty crests.
4.1.5 மாம் து ஸோகாபிஸந்தப்தம்
மாதய: பீடயந்நிவை ।
பரதஸ்ய ச து:கேந
வைதேஹ்யா ஹரணேந ச ॥
māṃ tu ṡōkābhisantaptam
mādhayaḥ pīḍayannivai ।
bharatasya ca duḥkhēna
vaidēhyā haraṇēna ca ॥
Scorched as I am with the grief of
Bharata’s distress and the abduction of Seetā,
the stimulated senses make me struggle.
4.1.6 ஸோகார்தஸ்யாபி மே பம்பா
ஸோபதே சித்ரகாநநா ।
வ்யவகீர்ணா பஹுவிதை:
புஷ்பைஸ்ஸீதோதகா ஸிவா ॥
ṡōkārtasyāpi mē pampā
ṡōbhatē citrakānanā ।
vyavakīrṇā bahuvidhaiḥ
puṣpaiṡṡītōdakā ṡivā ॥
But, though distraught with grief,
I am enchanted at the sight of the Pampa
with its variegated woods, its cool and pure waters,
strewn with an assortment of flowers.
4.1.7 நலிநைரபி ஸஞ்சந்நா
ஹ்யத்யர்தம்ஸுபதர்ஸநா ।
ஸர்பவ்யாலாநுசரிதா
ம்ருகத்விஜஸமாகுலா ॥
nalinairapi sañchannā
hyatyarthaṃṡubhadarṡanā ।
sarpavyālānucaritā
mṛgadvijasamākulā ॥
Covered with a mass of lotuses,
it is extremely captivating.
Snakes and beasts move about here;
deer and birds are abundant.
4.1.8 அதிகம் ப்ரவிபாத்யேதத்
நீலபீதம் து ஸாத்வலம் ।
த்ருமாணாம் விவிதை: புஷ்பை:
பரிஸ்தோமைரிவார்பிதம் ॥
adhikaṃ pravibhātyētat
nīlapītaṃ tu ṡādvalam ।
drumāṇāṃ vividhaiḥ puṣpaiḥ
paristōmairivārpitam ॥
The bluish and yellowish grass
looks extremely beautiful,
with a variety of flowers from the trees (fallen on it),
as if it is covered by a carpet.
4.1.9 புஷ்பபாரஸம்ருத்தாநி
ஸிகராணி ஸமந்தத: ।
லதாபி: புஷ்பிதாக்ராபி:
உபகூடாநி ஸர்வஸ: ॥
puṣpabhārasamṛddhāni
ṡikharāṇi samantataḥ ।
latābhiḥ puṣpitāgrābhiḥ
upagūḍhāni sarvaṡaḥ ॥
The tree tops everywhere are loaded with flowers
and are held in tight embrace by the
climbing vines which themselves have burst into bloom.
4.1.10 ஸுகாநிலோऽயம் ஸௌமித்ரே
கால: ப்ரசுரமந்மத: ।
கந்தவாந்ஸுரபிர்மாஸோ
ஜாதபுஷ்பபலத்ரும: ॥
sukhānilō'yaṃ saumitrē
kālaḥ pracuramanmathaḥ ।
gandhavānsurabhirmāsō
jātapuṣpaphaladrumaḥ ॥
O Sowmitri, this pleasant breeze engenders passion.
This season is prideful with fragrance (in the air)
and the trees putting forth flowers and fruits.
4.1.11 பஸ்யரூபாணி ஸௌமித்ரே
வநாநாம் புஷ்பஸாலிநாம் ।
ஸ்ருஜதாம் புஷ்பவர்ஷாணி
தோயம் தோயமுசாமிவ ॥
paṡyarūpāṇi saumitrē
vanānāṃ puṣpaṡālinām ।
sṛjatāṃ puṣpavarṣāṇi
tōyaṃ tōyamucāmiva ॥
O Sowmitri! See these woods in full bloom
letting down a shower of flowers
like clouds letting down rain.
4.1.12 ப்ரஸ்தரேஷு ச ரம்யேஷு
விவிதா: காநநத்ருமா: ।
வாயுவேகப்ரசலிதா:
புஷ்பைரவகிரந்தி காம் ॥
prastarēṣu ca ramyēṣu
vividhāḥ kānanadrumāḥ ।
vāyuvēgapracalitāḥ
puṣpairavakiranti gām ॥
The trees of the forest,
shaken by the violent winds,
scatter flowers on the ground
all over the beautiful mountainsides.
4.1.13 பதிதை: பதமாநைஸ்ச
பாதபஸ்தைஸ்ச மாருத: ।
குஸுமை: பஸ்ய ஸௌமித்ரே
க்ரீடந்நிவ ஸமந்தத: ॥
patitaiḥ patamānaiṡca
pādapasthaiṡca mārutaḥ ।
kusumaiḥ paṡya saumitrē
krīḍanniva samantataḥ ॥
O Sowmitri! See how the wind everywhere is playing
with the flowers that have fallen, that are falling
and those that are on the trees.
4.1.14 விக்ஷிபந்விவிதாஸ்ஸாகா
நகாநாம் குஸுமோத்கசா: ।
மாருதஸ்சலிதஸ்தாநை:
ஷட்பதைரநுகீயதே ॥
vikṣipanvividhāṡṡākhā
nagānāṃ kusumōtkacāḥ ।
mārutaṡcalitasthānaiḥ
ṣaṭpadairanugīyatē ॥
The wind shakes the tree-branches loaded with flowers.
The bees, dislodged, hum in rhythm with it.
4.1.15 மத்தகோகிலஸந்நாதை:
நர்தயந்நிவ பாதபாந் ।
ஸைலகந்தரநிஷ்க்ராந்த:
ப்ரகீத இவ சாநில: ॥
mattakōkilasannādaiḥ
nartayanniva pādapān ।
ṡailakandaraniṣkrāntaḥ
pragīta iva cānilaḥ ॥
The wind blowing from the mountain caves seems to
sing in tune with the amorous Kōkilas
and seem to make the trees dance to the tune.
4.1.16 தேந விக்ஷிபதாऽத்யர்தம்
பவநேந ஸமந்தத: ।
அமீ ஸம்ஸக்தஸாகாக்ரா
க்ரதிதா இவ பாதபா: ॥
tēna vikṣipatā'tyartham
pavanēna samantataḥ ।
amī saṃsaktaṡākhāgrā
grathitā iva pādapāḥ ॥
These trees seem to be tied with each other,
their branches enmeshed,
swaying from the wind on every side.
4.1.17 ஸ ஏஷ ஸுகஸம்ஸ்பர்ஸோ
வாதி சந்தநஸீதல: ।
கந்தமப்யாவஹந்புண்யம்
ஸ்ரமாபநயநோऽநில: ॥
sa ēṣa sukhasaṃsparṡō
vāti candanaṡītalaḥ ।
gandhamabhyāvahanpuṇyam
ṡramāpanayanō'nilaḥ ॥
But the same wind, with its
cool and comforting touch like that of sandal,
and carrying the best of fragrances,
comforts the fatigued.
4.1.18 அமீ பவநவிக்ஷிப்தா
விநதந்தீவ பாதபா: ।
ஷட்பதைரநுகூஜந்தோ
வநேஷு மதுகந்திஷு ॥
amī pavanavikṣiptā
vinadantīva pādapāḥ ।
ṣaṭpadairanukūjantō
vanēṣu madhugandhiṣu ॥
The trees in the honey-scented woods,
swayed by the wind, seem to enjoy
as the bees hum along with them.
4.1.19 கிரிப்ரஸ்தேஷு ரம்யேஷு
புஷ்பவத்பிர்மநோரமை: ।
ஸம்ஸக்தஸிகராஸ்ஸைலா
விராஜந்தே மஹாத்ருமை: ॥
giriprasthēṣu ramyēṣu
puṣpavadbhirmanōramaiḥ ।
saṃsaktaṡikharāṡṡailā
virājantē mahādrumaiḥ ॥
The mountains are resplendent with high crests,
their beautiful flanks full of giant trees in bloom,
ravishing the heart.
4.1.20 புஷ்பஸஞ்சந்நஸிகரா
மாருதோத்க்ஷேபசஞ்சலா: ।
அமீ மதுகரோத்தம்ஸா:
ப்ரகீதா இவ பாதபா: ॥
puṣpasañchannaṡikharā
mārutōtkṣēpacañcalāḥ ।
amī madhukarōttaṃsāḥ
pragītā iva pādapāḥ ॥
The trees, their tops covered by flowers,
with hovering bees for ornaments
and swaying with the wind, look
as if they are ready for a performance.
4.1.21 ஸுபுஷ்பிதாம்ஸ்து பஸ்யைதாந்
கர்ணிகாராம்த்ஸமந்தத: ।
ஹாடகப்ரதிஸஞ்சந்நாந்
நராந்பீதாம்பராநிவ ॥
supuṣpitāṃstu paṡyaitān
karṇikārāṃtsamantataḥ ।
hāṭakapratisañchannān
narānpītāmbarāniva ॥
Look at these Karṇikāras all around, full of flowers.
They are like men in yellow garments, covered in gold.
4.1.22 அயம் வஸந்தஸ்ஸௌமித்ரே
நாநாவிஹகநாதித: ।
ஸீதயா விப்ரஹீணஸ்ய
ஸோகஸந்தீபநோ மம ॥
ayaṃ vasantassaumitrē
nānāvihaganāditaḥ ।
sītayā viprahīṇasya
ṡōkasandīpanō mama ॥
This spring with its choir of many birds,
O Sowmitri, enhances my grief of separation from Seetā.
4.1.23 மாம் ஹி ஸோகஸமாக்ராந்தம்
ஸந்தாபயதி மந்மத: ।
ஹ்ருஷ்டம் ப்ரவதமாநஸ்ச
மமாஹ்வயதி கோகில: ॥
māṃ hi ṡōkasamākrāntam
santāpayati manmathaḥ ।
hṛṣṭaṃ pravadamānaṡca
mamāhvayati kōkilaḥ ॥
Manmatha burns my body, plunged in grief as I am.
The Kōkila challenges me with its happy notes.
Manmatha is god of love.
4.1.24 ஏஷ தாத்யூஹகோ ஹ்ருஷ்டோ
ரம்யே மாம் வநநிர்ஜரே ।
ப்ரணதந்மந்மதாவிஷ்டம்
ஸோசயிஷ்யதி லக்ஷ்மண ॥
ēṣa dātyūhakō hṛṣṭō
ramyē māṃ vananirjharē ।
praṇadanmanmathāviṣṭam
ṡōcayiṣyati lakṣmaṇa ॥
O Lakshmaṇa! The Dātyūhaka bird,
crowing from the sylvan brook,
fills me with sadness, suffering as I do
in the overpowering grip of passion.
4.1.25 ஸ்ருத்வைதஸ்ய புரா ஸப்தம்
ஆஸ்ரமஸ்தா மம ப்ரியா
மாமாஹூய ப்ரமுதிதா
பரமம் ப்ரத்யநந்தத ॥
ṡrutvaitasya purā ṡabdam
āṡramasthā mama priyā
māmāhūya pramuditā
paramaṃ pratyanandata ॥
Earlier, whenever my beloved,
sitting in the Āṡrama, heard this cry,
used to feel very happy and call out to me in joy.

saṃsaktaṡikharāṡṡailā
virājantē mahādrumaiḥ ॥
The mountains are resplendent with high crests,
their beautiful flanks full of giant trees in bloom,
ravishing the heart.
4.1.20 புஷ்பஸஞ்சந்நஸிகரா
மாருதோத்க்ஷேபசஞ்சலா: ।
அமீ மதுகரோத்தம்ஸா:
ப்ரகீதா இவ பாதபா: ॥
puṣpasañchannaṡikharā
mārutōtkṣēpacañcalāḥ ।
amī madhukarōttaṃsāḥ
pragītā iva pādapāḥ ॥
The trees, their tops covered by flowers,
with hovering bees for ornaments
and swaying with the wind, look
as if they are ready for a performance.
4.1.21 ஸுபுஷ்பிதாம்ஸ்து பஸ்யைதாந்
கர்ணிகாராம்த்ஸமந்தத: ।
ஹாடகப்ரதிஸஞ்சந்நாந்
நராந்பீதாம்பராநிவ ॥
supuṣpitāṃstu paṡyaitān
karṇikārāṃtsamantataḥ ।
hāṭakapratisañchannān
narānpītāmbarāniva ॥
Look at these Karṇikāras all around, full of flowers.
They are like men in yellow garments, covered in gold.
4.1.22 அயம் வஸந்தஸ்ஸௌமித்ரே
நாநாவிஹகநாதித: ।
ஸீதயா விப்ரஹீணஸ்ய
ஸோகஸந்தீபநோ மம ॥
ayaṃ vasantassaumitrē
nānāvihaganāditaḥ ।
sītayā viprahīṇasya
ṡōkasandīpanō mama ॥
This spring with its choir of many birds,
O Sowmitri, enhances my grief of separation from Seetā.
4.1.23 மாம் ஹி ஸோகஸமாக்ராந்தம்
ஸந்தாபயதி மந்மத: ।
ஹ்ருஷ்டம் ப்ரவதமாநஸ்ச
மமாஹ்வயதி கோகில: ॥
māṃ hi ṡōkasamākrāntam
santāpayati manmathaḥ ।
hṛṣṭaṃ pravadamānaṡca
mamāhvayati kōkilaḥ ॥
Manmatha burns my body, plunged in grief as I am.
The Kōkila challenges me with its happy notes.
Manmatha is god of love.
4.1.24 ஏஷ தாத்யூஹகோ ஹ்ருஷ்டோ
ரம்யே மாம் வநநிர்ஜரே ।
ப்ரணதந்மந்மதாவிஷ்டம்
ஸோசயிஷ்யதி லக்ஷ்மண ॥
ēṣa dātyūhakō hṛṣṭō
ramyē māṃ vananirjharē ।
praṇadanmanmathāviṣṭam
ṡōcayiṣyati lakṣmaṇa ॥
O Lakshmaṇa! The Dātyūhaka bird,
crowing from the sylvan brook,
fills me with sadness, suffering as I do
in the overpowering grip of passion.
4.1.25 ஸ்ருத்வைதஸ்ய புரா ஸப்தம்
ஆஸ்ரமஸ்தா மம ப்ரியா
மாமாஹூய ப்ரமுதிதா
பரமம் ப்ரத்யநந்தத ॥
ṡrutvaitasya purā ṡabdam
āṡramasthā mama priyā
māmāhūya pramuditā
paramaṃ pratyanandata ॥
Earlier, whenever my beloved,
sitting in the Āṡrama, heard this cry,
used to feel very happy and call out to me in joy.
