Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 73
In this Sarga, Kabandha describes to Rāma the path that leads to the abode of Sugreeva, starting from the stretch that is abundant with various kinds of flowering trees, which leads to the lake Pampa of cool, clear and pure water, and then to the Mataṅga Āṡrama area where anchorite Ṡabari lives, and on to Mount Ṛshyamūka and then finally to the cave where Sugreeva lives along with four other Vānaras.
3.73.1 நிதர்ஸயித்வா ராமாய
ஸீதாயா: ப்ரதிபாதநே ।
வாக்யமந்வர்தமர்தஜ்ஞ:
கபந்த: புநரப்ரவீத் ॥
nidarṡayitvā rāmāya
sītāyāḥ pratipādanē ।
vākyamanvarthamarthajñaḥ
kabandhaḥ punarabravīt ॥
Having told Rāma how to search for Seetā,
Kabandha continued with apt and necessary information:
3.73.2-5a ஏஷ ராம ஸிவ: பந்தா
யத்ரைதே புஷ்பிதா த்ருமா: ।
ப்ரதீசீம் திஸமாஸ்ரித்ய
ப்ரகாஸந்தே மநோரமா: ।
ஜம்பூப்ரியாலபநஸ
ப்லக்ஷந்யக்ரோதஸிந்துகா: ।
அஸ்வத்தா: கர்ணிகாராஸ்ச
சூதாஸ்சாந்யே ச பாதபா: ।
தந்வநா நாகவ்ருக்ஷாஸ்ச
திலகா நக்தமாலகா: ।
நீலாஸோகா: கதம்பாஸ்ச
கரவீராஸ்ச புஷ்பிதா: ।
அக்நிமுக்யா அஸோகாஸ்ச
ஸுரக்தா: பாரிபத்ரகா: ॥
ēṣa rāma ṡivaḥ panthā
yatraitē puṣpitā drumāḥ ।
pratīcīṃ diṡamāṡritya
prakāṡantē manōramāḥ ।
jambūpriyālapanasa
plakṣanyagrōdhasindhukāḥ ।
aṡvatthāḥ karṇikārāṡca
cūtāṡcānyē ca pādapāḥ ।
dhanvanā nāgavṛkṣāṡca
tilakā naktamālakāḥ ।
nīlāṡōkāḥ kadambāṡca
karavīrāṡca puṣpitāḥ ।
agnimukhyā aṡōkāṡca
suraktāḥ pāribhadrakāḥ ॥
O Rāma! Take this nice west-bound path
that enchants the heart, gleams with trees in flower,
such as Jambū, Priyāla, Panasa, Plakshanya,
Grōdha, Sindhuka, Aṡvattha, Karṇikāra, Cūtā,
and others like Dhanvana, Nāgavṛksha, Tilakā,
Naktamālaka, Nīlāṡōka, Kadamba, Karavīra,
Agnimukhya, Aṡōka, Suraktāḥ and Pāribhadraka.
3.73.5b-6a தாநாருஹ்யாதவா பூமௌ
பாதயித்வா ச தாந்பலாத் ।
பலாந்யம்ருதகல்பாநி
பக்ஷயந்தௌ கமிஷ்யத: ॥
tānāruhyāthavā bhūmau
pātayitvā ca tānbalāt ।
phalānyamṛtakalpāni
bhakṣayantau gamiṣyathaḥ ॥
Go on your way, eating the Amṛta-like fruits,
getting to them by either climbing the trees
or by forcing them to fall down.
3.73.6b-7a தததிக்ரம்ய காகுத்த்ஸ
வநம் புஷ்பிதபாதபம் ।
நந்தநப்ரதிமம் சாந்யத்
குரவோ ஹ்யுத்தரா இவ ॥
tadatikramya kākutthsa
vanaṃ puṣpitapādapam ।
nandanapratimaṃ cānyat
kuravō hyuttarā iva ॥
After you pass through that Vana with trees in flower,
you will find another one, which resembles
Nandana and the Uttara-kuru region.
3.73.7b-8a ஸர்வகாமபலா யத்ர
பாதபாஸ்து மதுரஸ்ரவா: ।
ஸர்வே ச ருதவஸ்தத்ர
வநே சைத்ரரதே யதா ॥
sarvakāmaphalā yatra
pādapāstu madhurasravāḥ ।
sarvē ca ṛtavastatra
vanē caitrarathē yathā ॥
Giving fruits perennially that are juicy and sweet,
that Vana has all the seasons
at all times, like the Caitraratha.
3.73.8b-9a பலபாராநதாஸ்தத்ர
மஹாவிடபதாரிண: ।
ஸோபந்தே ஸர்வதஸ்தத்ர
மேகபர்வதஸந்நிபா: ॥
phalabhārānatāstatra
mahāviṭapadhāriṇaḥ ।
ṡōbhantē sarvatastatra
mēghaparvatasannibhāḥ ॥
Trees with huge boughs
that are bowed down by the weight of their fruit,
looking like clouds and mountains, adorn that area.
3.73.9b-10a தாநாருஹ்யாதவா பூமௌ
பாதயித்வா யதாஸுகம் ।
பலாந்யம்ருதகல்பாநி
லக்ஷ்மணஸ்தே ப்ரதாஸ்யதி ॥
tānāruhyāthavā bhūmau
pātayitvā yathāsukham ।
phalānyamṛtakalpāni
lakṣmaṇastē pradāsyati ॥
Lakshmaṇa can bring you those Amṛta-like fruit,
either by climbing the trees or
by shaking them down, whichever is easy.
3.73.10b-11a சங்க்ரமந்தௌ வராந்தேஸாந்
ஸைலாச்சைலம் வநாத்வநம் ।
தத: புஷ்கரிணீம் வீரௌ
பம்பாம் நாம கமிஷ்யத: ॥
caṅkramantau varāndēṡān
ṡailācchailaṃ vanādvanam ।
tataḥ puṣkariṇīṃ vīrau
pampāṃ nāma gamiṣyathaḥ ॥
Going from mountain to mountain and Vana to Vana,
through that excellent region, O Veeras,
you will reach the lake named Pampa.
3.73.11b-12a அஸர்கராமவிப்ரம்ஸாம்
ஸமதீர்தாமஸைவலாம் ।
ராம ஸஞ்ஜாதவாலூகாம்
கமலோத்பலஸாலிநீம் ॥
aṡarkarāmavibhraṃṡām
samatīrthāmaṡaivalām ।
rāma sañjātavālūkām
kamalōtpalaṡālinīm ॥
Its beaches are shallow uniformly,
with no pebbles, no slippery spots and no mass.
Sandy mounds rise up (here and there around it),
and it is adorned with lotuses and black lilies.
3.73.12b-13a தத்ர ஹம்ஸா: ப்லவா: க்ரௌஞ்சா:
குரராஸ்சைவ ராகவ ।
வல்குஸ்வநா விகூஜந்தி
பம்பாஸலிலகோசரா: ॥
tatra haṃsāḥ plavāḥ krauñcāḥ
kurarāṡcaiva rāghava ।
valgusvanā vikūjanti
pampāsalilagōcarāḥ ॥
O Rāghava! In the waters of Pampa can be seen
swans, Plavas, Krouncas and Kuraras warbling sweetly.
3.73.13b-14a நோத்விஜந்தே நராந்த்ருஷ்ட்வா
வதஸ்யாகோவிதாஸ்ஸுபா: ।
க்ருதபிண்டோபமாந் ஸ்தூலாந்
தாந்த்விஜாந்பக்ஷயிஷ்யத: ॥
nōdvijantē narāndṛṣṭvā
vadhasyākōvidāṡṡubhāḥ ।
ghṛtapiṇḍōpamān sthūlān
tāndvijānbhakṣayiṣyathaḥ ॥
Those wonderful creatures are not afraid of people,
as they know nothing of being killed.
They are like solid balls of butter.
You can eat those birds.
3.73.14b-16a ரோஹிதாந்வக்ரதுண்டாம்ஸ்ச
நடமீநாம்ஸ்ச ராகவ ।
பம்பாயாமிஷுபிர்மத்ஸ்யாந்
தத்ர ராம வராந்ஹதாந் ।
நிஸ்த்வக்பக்ஷாநயஸ்தப்தாந்
அக்ருஸாநேககண்டகாந் ।
தவ பக்த்யா ஸமாயுக்தோ
லக்ஷ்மணஸ்ஸம்ப்ரதாஸ்யதி ॥
rōhitānvakratuṇḍāṃṡca
naḍamīnāṃṡca rāghava ।
pampāyāmiṣubhirmatsyān
tatra rāma varānhatān ।
nistvakpakṣānayastaptān
akṛṡānēkakaṇṭakān ।
tava bhaktyā samāyuktō
lakṣmaṇassampradāsyati ॥
Lakshmaṇa with his shafts can catch
the best and sumptuous fish from Pampa,
the Rohitas, the Vakratundas and the Nadaminas,
remove their bones, scales and fins,
strip away the speckled skin,
broil them on iron skewers,
and serve them to you with all devotion.
3.73.16b-18a ப்ருஸம்தே காததோ மத்ஸ்யாந்
பம்பாயா: புஷ்பஸஞ்சயே ।
பத்மகந்தி ஸிவம் வாரி
ஸுகஸீதமநாமயம் ।
உத்த்ருத்ய ஸததாக்லிஷ்டம்
ரௌப்யஸ்பாடிகஸந்நிபம் ।
அஸௌ புஷ்கரபர்ணேந
லக்ஷ்மண: பாயயிஷ்யதி ॥
bhṛṡaṃtē khādatō matsyān
pampāyāḥ puṣpasañcayē ।
padmagandhi ṡivaṃ vāri
sukhaṡītamanāmayam ।
uddhṛtya satatākliṣṭam
raupyasphāṭikasannibham ।
asau puṣkaraparṇēna
lakṣmaṇaḥ pāyayiṣyati ॥
As you thoroughly enjoy eating the fish,
Lakshmaṇa can bring the best,
healthy, pure and moderately cold water
carrying the smell of lotuses and
clear like crystal and silver,
from the midst of the flowers in Pampa
and serve you in a (cupped) lotus leaf, for a drink. Wow! What a luxury! Would a drink served in a five-star hotel compare with this experience?
3.73.18b-19 ஸ்தூலாந்கிரிகுஹாஸய்யாந்
வராஹாந்வநசாரிண: ।
அபாம் லோபாதுபாவ்ருத்தாந்
வ்ருஷபாநிவ நர்தத: ।
ரூபாந்விதாம்ஸ்ச பம்பாயாம்
த்ரக்ஷ்யஸி த்வம் நரோத்தம ॥
sthūlāngiriguhāṡayyān
varāhānvanacāriṇaḥ ।
apāṃ lōbhādupāvṛttān
vṛṣabhāniva nardataḥ ।
rūpānvitāṃṡca pampāyāṃ
drakṣyasi tvaṃ narōttama ॥
O best of men! You will see wild boars
that are eye-catching, stout and bellowing like bulls,
that rest in the mountain caves,
coming to Pampa to drink water.
3.73.20 ஸாயாஹ்நே விசரந்ராம
விடபீந்மால்யதாரிண: ।
ஸீதோதகம் ச பம்பாயா
த்ருஷ்ட்வா ஸோகம் விஹாஸ்யஸி ॥
sāyāhnē vicaranrāma
viṭapīnmālyadhāriṇaḥ ।
ṡītōdakaṃ ca pampāyā
dṛṣṭvā ṡōkaṃ vihāsyasi ॥
O Rāma! Strolling in the evenings,
you will forget your grief
watching the cool water of Pampa and
the trees with garlands of flowers.
