Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 71
In this Sarga Kabandha tells his story of how he was conferred long life by Brahma, and how he challenged Ṡakra and how his head and thighs were shoved into his body, hit by Vajra, the weapon of Ṡakra, and how Ṡakra told him that he will be relieved of the disgusting headless body when his arms are cut off by Rāma.
Rāma asks Kabandha for help in finding Seetā and Kabandha tells him that his supernatural abilities were lost and that he could gain them back only after being cremated, after which he would regain his original form, and asks Rāma to cremate him before sunset.
ஸ்ரியா விராஜிதம் புத்ரம்
தநோஸ்த்வம் வித்தி லக்ஷ்மண ।
இந்த்ரகோபாதிதம் ரூபம்
ப்ராப்தமேவம் ரணாஜிரே ॥
ṡriyā virājitaṃ putram
danōstvaṃ viddhi lakṣmaṇa ।
indrakōpādidaṃ rūpam
prāptamēvaṃ raṇājirē ॥
Know, O Lakshmaṇa, that I am the son of Danu,
and I was once splendid in opulence;
it was the wrath of Indra in the battlefield
that imposed this (hideous) form on me.
அஹம் ஹி தபஸோக்ரேண
பிதாமஹமதோஷயம் ।
தீர்கமாயுஸ்ஸமேப்ராதாத்
ததோமாம் விப்ரமோऽஸ்ப்ருஸத் ॥
ahaṃ hi tapasōgrēṇa
pitāmahamatōṣayam ।
dīrghamāyussamēprādāt
tatōmāṃ vibhramō'spṛṡat ॥
By doing a severe Tapa, I earned the
grace of the grand sire (Brahma)
and he conferred long life on me.
With that, a foolish pride took over me.
தீர்கமாயுர்மயா ப்ராப்தம்
கிம் மே ஸக்ர: கரிஷ்யதி ।
இத்யேவம் புத்திமாஸ்தாய
ரணே ஸக்ரமதர்ஷயம் ॥
dīrghamāyurmayā prāptam
kiṃ mē ṡakraḥ kariṣyati ।
ityēvaṃ buddhimāsthāya
raṇē ṡakramadharṣayam ॥
Thinking “I am now granted with long life;
what can (even) Ṡakra do to me?”,
I challenged Ṡakra in a fight.
தஸ்ய பாஹுப்ரயுக்தேந
வஜ்ரேண ஸதபர்வணா ।
ஸக்திநீ சைவ மூர்தா ச
ஸரீரே ஸம்ப்ரவேஸிதம் ॥
tasya bāhuprayuktēna
vajrēṇa ṡataparvaṇā ।
sakthinī caiva mūrdhā ca
ṡarīrē sampravēṡitam ॥
When he hurled his weapon, the hundred-Parva Vajra,
my head and thighs were shoved into my body.
When several pieces are joined at their ends in sequence
to make a long object, each piece is called a Parva.
Examples: Fingers have three Parvas.
Sugar cane or bamboo cane has many Parvas.
Arrows made out of bamboo shafts have many Parvas.
Parva is used in the figurative sense as well,
such as in saying Mahabharata has eighteen Parvas.
ஸ மயா யாச்யமாந: ஸந்
நாநயத்யமஸாதநம் ।
பிதாமாஹவசஸ்ஸத்யம்
ததஸ்த்விதி மமாப்ரவீத் ॥
sa mayā yācyamānaḥ san
nānayadyamasādanam ।
pitāmāhavacassatyam
tadastviti mamābravīt ॥
In spite of my pleading, he did not
send me to the abode of Yama, saying,
‘The word of Grandsire must be upheld!’.
அநாஹார: கதம் ஸக்தோ
பக்நஸக்திஸிரோமுக: ।
வஜ்ரேணாபிஹத: காலம்
ஸுதீர்கமபி ஜீவிதும் ।
ஏவமுக்தஸ்து மே ஸக்ரோ
பாஹூ யோஜநமாயதௌ ।
ப்ராதாதாஸ்யம் ச மே குக்ஷௌ
தீக்ஷ்ணதம்ஷ்ட்ரமகல்பயத் ॥
anāhāraḥ kathaṃ ṡaktō
bhagnasakthiṡirōmukhaḥ ।
vajrēṇābhihataḥ kālam
sudīrghamapi jīvitum ।
ēvamuktastu mē ṡakrō
bāhū yōjanamāyatau ।
prādādāsyaṃ ca mē kukṣau
tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭramakalpayat ॥
When I asked, “Then, how can I survive long without food,
with my thighs, head and face broken, hit by Vajra?”
Ṡakra then gave me hands that stretch to a Yōjana
and also arranged a mouth with sharp fangs in my stomach.
ஸோऽஹம் புஜாப்யாம் தீர்காப்யாம்
ஸம்க்ருஷ்யாஸ்மிந்வநேசராந் ।
ஸிம்ஹவ்திபம்ருகவ்யாக்ராந்
பக்ஷயாமி ஸமந்தத: ॥
sō'haṃ bhujābhyāṃ dīrghābhyām
saṃkṛṣyāsminvanēcarān ।
siṃhavdipamṛgavyāghrān
bhakṣayāmi samantataḥ ॥
With those long arms I have been grabbing
lions, elephants, deer and tigers that
roam all around the Vana and devour them.
ஸ து மாமப்ரவீதிந்த்ரோ
யதா ராமஸ்ஸலக்ஷ்மண: ।
சேத்ஸ்யதே ஸமரே பாஹூ
ததா ஸ்வர்கம் கமிஷ்யஸி ॥
sa tu māmabravīdindrō
yadā rāmassalakṣmaṇaḥ ।
chētsyatē samarē bāhū
tadā svargaṃ gamiṣyasi ॥
Indra also said to me, “You will go to heaven when
Rāma, along with Lakshmaṇa, cuts off your arms in a battle!”
அநேந வபுஷா ராம
வநேऽஸ்மிந்ராஜஸத்தம ।
யத்யத்பஸ்யாமி ஸர்வஸ்ய
க்ரஹணம் ஸாது ரோசயே ।
அவஸ்யம் க்ரஹணம் ராமோ
மந்யேऽஹம் ஸமுபைஷ்யதி ।
இமாம் புத்திம் புரஸ்க்ருத்ய
தேஹந்யாஸக்ருதஸ்ரம: ॥
anēna vapuṣā rāma
vanē'sminrājasattama ।
yadyatpaṡyāmi sarvasya
grahaṇaṃ sādhu rōcayē ।
avaṡyaṃ grahaṇaṃ rāmō
manyē'haṃ samupaiṣyati ।
imāṃ buddhiṃ puraskṛtya
dēhanyāsakṛtaṡramaḥ ॥
O Rāma! O best of the kings!
(Since then) all I have been
interested in doing with this body
is to grab everything that I see in this Vana,
hoping that Rāma will be caught (one day) for certain.
Making this my strategy, I have been
trying hard to get rid of this body.
அஹம் ஹி மதிஸாசிவ்யம்
கரிஷ்யாமி நரர்ஷப ।
மித்ரம் சைவோபதேக்ஷ்யாமி
யுவாப்யாம் ஸம்ஸ்க்ருதோऽக்நிநா ॥
ahaṃ hi matisācivyam
kariṣyāmi nararṣabha ।
mitraṃ caivōpadēkṣyāmi
yuvābhyāṃ saṃskṛtō'gninā ॥
O bull among men! After you cremate me
I will give you good counsel and
also suggest an ally for you.
ஏவமுக்தஸ்து தர்மாத்மா
தநுநா தேந ராகவ: ।
இதம் ஜகாத வசநம்
லக்ஷ்மணஸ்யோபஸ்ருண்வத: ॥
ēvamuktastu dharmātmā
danunā tēna rāghavaḥ ।
idaṃ jagāda vacanam
lakṣmaṇasyōpaṡṛṇvataḥ ॥
When the son of Danu, the Dharmātma, told thus,
Rāma said these words while Lakshmaṇa was listening:
ராவணேந ஹ்ருதா பார்யா
மம ஸீதா யஸஸ்ஸ்விநீ ।
நிஷ்க்ராந்தஸ்ய ஜநஸ்தாநாத்
ஸஹப்ராத்ரா யதாஸுகம் ॥
rāvaṇēna hṛtā bhāryā
mama sītā yaṡassvinī ।
niṣkrāntasya janasthānāt
sahabhrātrā yathāsukham ॥
My wife, Seetā of great repute was abducted
by Rāvaṇa with all ease when
my brother and I were away from Janasthāna.
நாமமாத்ரம் து ஜாநாமி
ந ரூபம் தஸ்ய ரக்ஷஸ: ।
நிவாஸம் வா ப்ரபாவம் வா
வயம் தஸ்ய ந வித்மஹே ॥
nāmamātraṃ tu jānāmi
na rūpaṃ tasya rakṣasaḥ ।
nivāsaṃ vā prabhāvaṃ vā
vayaṃ tasya na vidmahē ॥
I only know his name.
We do not know how that Rākshasa looks,
or where he lives, or what his abilities are.
ஸோகார்தாநாமநாதாநாம்
ஏவம் விபரிதாவதாம் ।
காருண்யம் ஸத்ருஸம் கர்தும்
உபகாரே ச வர்ததாம் ॥
ṡōkārtānāmanāthānām
ēvaṃ viparidhāvatām ।
kāruṇyaṃ sadṛṡaṃ kartum
upakārē ca vartatām ॥
We are distraught and searching everywhere,
and there is no one to help us.
We hope you will return the favor by being
kind to us for the help we rendered to you.
ஸ த்வம் ஸீதாம் ஸமாசக்ஷ்வ
யேந வா யத்ர வா ஹ்ருதா ।
குரு கல்யாணமத்யர்தம்
யதி ஜாநாஸி தத்த்வத: ॥
sa tvaṃ sītāṃ samācakṣva
yēna vā yatra vā hṛtā ।
kuru kalyāṇamatyartham
yadi jānāsi tattvataḥ ॥
Please tell, if you know, everything about Seetā,
and who abducted her and where she is;
please do this big favor!
ஏவமுக்தஸ்து ராமேண
வாக்யம் தநுரநுத்தமம் ।
ப்ரோவாச குஸலோ வக்தும்
வக்தாரமபி ராகவம் ॥
ēvamuktastu rāmēṇa
vākyaṃ danuranuttamam ।
prōvāca kuṡalō vaktum
vaktāramapi rāghavam ॥
Thus asked by Rāma,
that best among the descendants of Danu,
who was skilled in speech,
said these words to Rāghava,
who was also eloquent with words:
கிம் து யாவந்ந யாத்யஸ்தம்
ஸவிதா ஸ்ராந்தவாஹந: ।
தாவந்மாமவடே க்ஷிப்த்வா
தஹ ராம யதாவிதி ॥
kiṃ tu yāvanna yātyastam
savitā ṡrāntavāhanaḥ ।
tāvanmāmavaṭē kṣiptvā
daha rāma yathāvidhi ॥
O Rāghava! Throw me into a pit
and burn me, in a customary manner
before the sun with his tired steeds goes west.
தக்தஸ்த்வயாऽஹமவடே
ந்யாயேந ரகுநந்தந ।
வக்ஷ்யாமி தமஹம் வீர
யஸ்தம் ஜ்ஞாஸ்யதி ராக்ஷஸம் ॥
dagdhastvayā'hamavaṭē
nyāyēna raghunandana ।
vakṣyāmi tamahaṃ vīra
yastaṃ jñāsyati rākṣasam ॥
O delight of Raghus! Once you burn me in a pit accordingly,
I shall tell you of him who can find out about the Rākshasa!
தேந ஸக்யம் ச கர்தவ்யம்
ந்யாய்யவ்ருத்தேந ராகவ ।
கல்பயிஷ்யதி தே ப்ரீத:
ஸாஹாய்யம் லகுவிக்ரம: ॥
tēna sakhyaṃ ca kartavyam
nyāyyavṛttēna rāghava ।
kalpayiṣyati tē prītaḥ
sāhāyyaṃ laghuvikramaḥ ॥
O Rāghava! You should befriend him
who is fair in his ways,
He of swift valor will be happy
and render you all help.
ந ஹி தஸ்யாஸ்த்யவிஜ்ஞாதம்
த்ரிஷு லோகேஷு ராகவ ।
ஸர்வாந்பரிஸ்ருதோ லோகாந்
புராऽஸௌ காரணாந்தரே ॥
na hi tasyāstyavijñātam
triṣu lōkēṣu rāghava ।
sarvānparisṛtō lōkān
purā'sau kāraṇāntarē ॥
There is nothing in the three worlds
that he does not know, for,
once up on a time he went around
all the worlds for a certain reason.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே ஏகஸப்ததிதமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
araṇyakāṇḍē ēkasaptatitamassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the seventy first Sarga
in Araṇya Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.

ஸாஹாய்யம் லகுவிக்ரம: ॥
tēna sakhyaṃ ca kartavyam
nyāyyavṛttēna rāghava ।
kalpayiṣyati tē prītaḥ
sāhāyyaṃ laghuvikramaḥ ॥
O Rāghava! You should befriend him
who is fair in his ways,
He of swift valor will be happy
and render you all help.
ந ஹி தஸ்யாஸ்த்யவிஜ்ஞாதம்
த்ரிஷு லோகேஷு ராகவ ।
ஸர்வாந்பரிஸ்ருதோ லோகாந்
புராऽஸௌ காரணாந்தரே ॥
na hi tasyāstyavijñātam
triṣu lōkēṣu rāghava ।
sarvānparisṛtō lōkān
purā'sau kāraṇāntarē ॥
There is nothing in the three worlds
that he does not know, for,
once up on a time he went around
all the worlds for a certain reason.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே ஏகஸப்ததிதமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
araṇyakāṇḍē ēkasaptatitamassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the seventy first Sarga
in Araṇya Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
