    Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 69
    In this Sarga, after cremating and giving oblations to Jaṭāyu, the brothers head out into the impenetrable parts of the Vana in search of Seetā. Then, by a deep and long cave, they see a Rākshasi of revolting face, by name Ayōmukhi. She makes unwanted advances to Lakshmaṇa and he cuts her ears and nose off.
    Then they proceed further and hear a thunderous noise that seems to split the Vana. They try to find the source of that sound and see a monstrous, dreadful Rākshasa called Kabandha, who has no head, but only trunk and arms. His mouth with large fangs is on his belly and his single eye is on his chest. He stretches his arms and grabs both the brothers at the same time.
    3.69.1 க்ருத்வைவமுதகம் தஸ்மை
    ப்ரஸ்திதௌ ராமலக்ஷ்மணௌ ।
    அவேக்ஷந்தௌ வநே ஸீதாம்
    பஸ்சிமாம் ஜக்மதுர்திஸம் ॥
    kṛtvaivamudakaṃ tasmai
    prasthitau rāmalakṣmaṇau ।
    avēkṣantau vanē sītām
    paṡcimāṃ jagmaturdiṡam ॥
    After giving the water libations to him,
    Rāma and Lakshmaṇa headed out westwards,
    looking for Seetā in the Vana.
    3.69.2 தௌ திஸம் தக்ஷிணாம் கத்வா
    ஸரசாபாஸிதாரிணௌ ।
    அவிப்ரஹதமைக்ஷ்வாகௌ
    பந்தாநம் ப்ரதிபேதது: ॥
    tau diṡaṃ dakṣiṇāṃ gatvā
    ṡaracāpāsidhāriṇau ।
    aviprahatamaikṣvākau
    panthānaṃ pratipēdatuḥ ॥
    Then the Ikshwākus, armed with bow, arrow and sword,
    took the southerly direction,
    treading in an apparently unbeaten track.
    3.69.3 குல்மைர்வ்ருக்ஷைஸ்ச பஹுபி:
    லதாபிஸ்ச ப்ரவேஷ்டிதம் ।
    ஆவ்ருதம் ஸர்வதோ துர்கம்
    கஹநம் கோரதர்ஸநம் ॥
    gulmairvṛkṣaiṡca bahubhiḥ
    latābhiṡca pravēṣṭitam ।
    āvṛtaṃ sarvatō durgam
    gahanaṃ ghōradarṡanam ॥
    Covered by bushes, trees and tangled with vines,
    it looked dreadful, difficult to enter or pass.
    3.69.4 வ்யதிக்ரம்ய து வேகேந
    வ்யாலஸிம்ஹநிஷேவிதம் ।
    ஸுபீமம் தந்மஹாரண்யம்
    வ்யதியாதௌ மஹாபலௌ ॥
    vyatikramya tu vēgēna
    vyālasiṃhaniṣēvitam ।
    subhīmaṃ tanmahāraṇyam
    vyatiyātau mahābalau ॥
    Those mighty strong ones
    quickly passed through that dense Aranya,
    which was terrifying with wild beasts and lions.
    3.69.5 தத: பரம் ஜநஸ்தாநாத்
    த்ரிக்ரோஸம் கம்ய ராகவௌ ।
    க்ரௌஞ்சாரண்யம் விவிஸது:
    கஹநம் தௌ மஹௌஜஸௌ ॥
    tataḥ paraṃ janasthānāt
    trikrōṡaṃ gamya rāghavau ।
    krauñcāraṇyaṃ viviṡatuḥ
    gahanaṃ tau mahaujasau ॥
    Then, after that, going a distance
    of three Krōṡas from Janasthāna,
    those two of immense strength entered
    Krounca Araṇya, a difficult one to penetrate.
    3.69.6-7 நாநாமேககநப்ரக்யம்
    ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டமிவ ஸர்வத: ।
    நாநாபக்ஷிகணைர்யுக்தம்
    நாநாவ்யாலம்ருகைர்யுதம் ।
    தித்ருக்ஷமாணௌ வைதேஹீம்
    தத்வநம் தௌ விசிக்யது: ।
    தத்ர தத்ராவதிஷ்டந்தௌ
    ஸீதாஹரணகர்ஸிதௌ ॥
    nānāmēghaghanaprakhyam
    prahṛṣṭamiva sarvataḥ ।
    nānāpakṣigaṇairyuktam
    nānāvyālamṛgairyutam ।
    didṛkṣamāṇau vaidēhīm
    tadvanaṃ tau vicikyatuḥ ।
    tatra tatrāvatiṣṭhantau
    sītāharaṇakarṡitau ॥
    Looking for Vaidēhi, they searched that Vana,
    which resembled a bank of clouds,
    seeming to be ebullient with its
    flocks of many kinds of birds
    and many kinds of beasts;
    taking rest here and there as they
    were weighed down to exhaustion by
    the grief from the abduction of Seetā.
    3.69.8-10 தத: பூர்வேண தௌ கத்வா
    த்ரிக்ரோஸம் ப்ராதரௌ ததா ।
    க்ரௌஞ்சாரண்யமதிக்ரம்ய
    மதங்காஸ்ரமமந்தரா ।
    த்ருஷ்ட்வா து தத்வநம் கோரம்
    பஹுபீமம்ருகத்விஜம் ।
    நநாஸத்த்வஸமாகீர்ணம்
    ஸர்வம் கஹநபாதபம் ।
    தத்ருஸாதே து தௌ தத்ர
    தரீம் தஸரதாத்மஜௌ ।
    பாதாலஸமகம்பீராம்
    தமஸா நித்யஸம்வ்ருதாம் ॥
    tataḥ pūrvēṇa tau gatvā
    trikrōṡaṃ bhrātarau tadā ।
    krauñcāraṇyamatikramya
    mataṅgāṡramamantarā ।
    dṛṣṭvā tu tadvanaṃ ghōram
    bahubhīmamṛgadvijam ।
    nanāsattvasamākīrṇam
    sarvaṃ gahanapādapam ।
    dadṛṡātē tu tau tatra
    darīṃ daṡarathātmajau ।
    pātālasamagambhīrām
    tamasā nityasaṃvṛtām ॥
    Then the two brothers went
    a distance of three Krōṡas eastward
    between Krounca Araṇya and the Āṡrama of Mataṅga,
    seeing (on the way) a dreadful Vana with its
    terrifying beasts and birds and
    packed with many kinds of creatures
    and thickets that were impenetrable.
    Then the sons of Daṡaratha saw in a mountain,
    a cave that was deep like Pātāla
    and pitch dark at all times.
    3.69.11 அஸாத்ய தௌ நரவ்யாக்ரௌ
    தர்யாஸ்தஸ்யாऽவிதூரத: ।
    தத்ருஸாதே மஹாரூபாம்
    ராக்ஷஸீம் விக்ருதாநநாம் ॥
    asādya tau naravyāghrau
    daryāstasyā'vidūrataḥ ।
    dadṛṡātē mahārūpām
    rākṣasīṃ vikṛtānanām ॥
    As those tigers among men approached it,
    they saw, not far from that cave,
    a gigantic Rākshasi with a revolting face.
    3.69.12-13 பயதாமல்பஸத்த்வாநாம்
    பீபத்ஸாம் ரௌத்ரதர்ஸநாம் ।
    லம்போதரீம் தீக்ஷ்ணதம்ஷ்ட்ராம்
    காராலீம் பருஷத்வசம் ।
    பக்ஷயந்தீம் ம்ருகாந்பீமாந்
    விகடாம் முக்தமூர்தஜாம் ।
    ப்ரைக்ஷேதாம் தௌ ததஸ்தத்ர
    ப்ராதரௌ ராமலக்ஷ்மணௌ ॥
    bhayadāmalpasattvānām
    bībhatsāṃ raudradarṡanām ।
    lambōdarīṃ tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭrām
    kārālīṃ paruṣatvacam ।
    bhakṣayantīṃ mṛgānbhīmān
    vikaṭāṃ muktamūrdhajām ।
    praikṣētāṃ tau tatastatra
    bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ॥
    The brothers Rāma and Lakshmaṇa saw
    that terrifying one with pot belly,
    rough skin, sharp fangs and disheveled hair,
    who looked deformed and crooked and disgusting,
    devouring terrifying beasts,
    striking terror in every ordinary creature.
    3.69.14 ஸா ஸமாஸாத்ய தௌ வீரௌ
    வ்ரஜந்தம் ப்ராதுரக்ரத: ।
    ஏஹி ரம்ஸ்யாவஹேத்யுக்த்வா
    ஸமாலம்பத லக்ஷ்மணம் ॥
    sā samāsādya tau vīrau
    vrajantaṃ bhrāturagrataḥ ।
    ēhi raṃsyāvahētyuktvā
    samālambata lakṣmaṇam ॥
    Then she approached those two Veeras,
    and grabbed Lakshmaṇa who was
    walking ahead of his brother,
    saying ‘come, let us make merry!’.
    3.69.15-16 உவாச சைநம் வசநம்
    ஸௌமித்ரிமுபகூஹ்ய ஸா ।
    அஹம் த்வயோமுகீ நாம
    லப்தா தே த்வமஸி ப்ரிய: ।
    நாத பர்வதகூடேஷு
    நதீநாம் புலிநேஷு ச ।
    ஆயுஸ்ஸேஷமிமம் வீர
    த்வம் மயா ஸஹ ரம்ஸ்யஸே ॥
    uvāca cainaṃ vacanam
    saumitrimupagūhya sā ।
    ahaṃ tvayōmukhī nāma
    labdhā tē tvamasi priyaḥ ।
    nātha parvatakūṭēṣu
    nadīnāṃ pulinēṣu ca ।
    āyuṡṡēṣamimaṃ vīra
    tvaṃ mayā saha raṃsyasē ॥
    Hugging Sowmitri, she said these words:
    ‘I am known as Ayōmukhi.
    You are my lover, and consider me as yours!
    O Veera! O my lord! You shall sport with me
    for the rest of your life,
    on the mountain sides and on
    the sandy banks of rivers.’
    3.69.17 ஏவமுக்தஸ்து குபித:
    கட்கமுத்த்ருத்ய லக்ஷ்மண: ।
    கர்ணநாஸாஸ்தநம் தஸ்யா
    நிசகர்தாரிஸூதந: ॥
    ēvamuktastu kupitaḥ
    khaḍgamuddhṛtya lakṣmaṇaḥ ।
    karṇanāsāstanaṃ tasyā
    nicakartārisūdanaḥ ॥
    Lakshmaṇa, the annihilator of foes,
    became angry at those words and
    took his sword out and
    cut off her ears, nose and breasts. Disfiguring a Rākshasi who proves herself to be harmful or annoying, seems to be a common occurrence during those times, as it seems to relieve them of their magical powers. This is the third time we see such an incident, the first one being with Tāṭaka (1.26.18) and the second with Ṡūrpaṇakhā (3.18.21).
    3.69.18 கர்ணநாஸே நிக்ருத்தே து
    விஸ்வரம் ஸா விநத்ய ச ।
    யதாகதம் ப்ரதுத்ராவ
    ராக்ஷஸீ பீமதர்ஸநா ॥
    karṇanāsē nikṛttē tu
    visvaraṃ sā vinadya ca ।
    yathāgataṃ pradudrāva
    rākṣasī bhīmadarṡanā ॥
    With her ears and nose cut off,
    The terrible looking Rākshasi
    let off a shriek of a cry and
    fled in the same direction in which she had come.
    3.69.19 தஸ்யாம் கதாயாம் கஹநம்
    வ்ரஜந்தௌ வநமோஜஸா ।
    ஆஸேததுரமித்ரக்நௌ
    ப்ராதரௌ ராமலக்ஷ்மணௌ ॥
    tasyāṃ gatāyāṃ gahanam
    vrajantau vanamōjasā ।
    āsēdaturamitraghnau
    bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ॥
    After she was gone, the brothers Rāma and Lakshmaṇa,
    slayers of the foe, with their might,
    went further into the impenetrable Vana.
    3.69.20 லக்ஷ்மணஸ்து மஹாதேஜா:
    ஸத்த்வவாந் ஸீலவாந் ஸுசி: ।
    அப்ரவீத்ப்ராஞ்ஜலிர்வாக்யம்
    ப்ராதரம் தீப்ததேஜஸம் ॥
    lakṣmaṇastu mahātējāḥ
    sattvavān ṡīlavān ṡuciḥ ।
    abravītprāñjalirvākyam
    bhrātaraṃ dīptatējasam ॥
    Lakshmaṇa of great radiance, immense power,
    impeccable character and pure mind,
    said these words to his brother of fiery radiance,
    with his hands folded in reverence:
    3.69.21 ஸ்பந்ததே ச த்ருடம் பாஹு:
    உத்விக்நமிவ மே மந: ।
    ப்ராயஸஸ்சாப்யநிஷ்டாநி
    நிமித்தாந்யுபலக்ஷயே ॥
    spandatē ca dṛḍhaṃ bāhuḥ
    udvignamiva mē manaḥ ।
    prāyaṡaṡcāpyaniṣṭāni
    nimittānyupalakṣayē ॥
    My left arm trembles violently,
    my mind seems to be oppressed by a vague fear.
    I see many portents of unpleasant things to come.
    3.69.22 தஸ்மாத்ஸஜ்ஜீபவார்ய த்வம்
    குருஷ்வ வசநம் ஹிதம் ।
    மமைவ ஹி நிமித்தாநி
    ஸத்யஸ்ஸம்ஸந்தி ஸம்ப்ரமம் ॥
    tasmātsajjībhavārya tvam
    kuruṣva vacanaṃ hitam ।
    mamaiva hi nimittāni
    sadyaṡṡaṃsanti sambhramam ॥
    Therefore, O noble one, be prepared,
    honoring my word of caution.
    The omens seem to whisper to me
    about a matter of immediate concern.
    3.69.23 ஏஷ வஞ்சுலகோ நாம
    பக்ஷீ பரமதாருண: ।
    ஆவயோர்விஜயம் யுத்தே
    ஸம்ஸந்நிவ விநர்ததி ॥
    ēṣa vañculakō nāma
    pakṣī paramadāruṇaḥ ।
    āvayōrvijayaṃ yuddhē
    ṡaṃsanniva vinardati ॥
    But this extremely terrible bird called Vañculaka
    makes a sound that seems to indicate
    eventual victory for us in battle.
    3.69.24 தயோரந்வேஷதோரேவம்
    ஸர்வம் தத்வநமோஜஸா ।
    ஸம்ஜஜ்ஞே விபுல: ஸப்தோ
    ப்ரபஞ்ஜந்நிவ தத்வநம் ॥
    tayōranvēṣatōrēvam
    sarvaṃ tadvanamōjasā ।
    saṃjajñē vipulaḥ ṡabdō
    prabhañjanniva tadvanam ॥
    As both of them, dauntless in their might,
    searched everywhere in that Vana,
    there arose a deafening noise
    that seemed to split the Vana.
    3.69.25 ஸம்வேஷ்டிதமிவாத்யர்தம்
    ககநம் மாதரிஸ்வநா ।
    வநஸ்ய தஸ்ய ஸப்தோऽபூ:
    திவமாபூரயந்நிவ ॥
    saṃvēṣṭitamivātyartham
    gaganaṃ mātariṡvanā ।
    vanasya tasya ṡabdō'bhūḥ
    divamāpūrayanniva ॥
    The sky seemed to be completely engulfed by the wind
    and filled by that sound from the Vana.
    3.69.26 தம் ஸப்தம் காங்க்ஷமாணஸ்து
    ராம: கக்ஷே ஸஹாநுஜ: ।
    ததர்ஸ ஸுமஹாகாயம்
    ராக்ஷஸம் விபுலோதரம் ॥
    taṃ ṡabdaṃ kāṅkṣamāṇastu
    rāmaḥ kakṣē sahānujaḥ ।
    dadarṡa sumahākāyam
    rākṣasaṃ vipulōdaram ॥
    When Rāma, along with his brother,
    sought for (the source of) the sound,
    he saw a Rākshasa of giant body and huge belly in a bush.
    3.69.27 ஆஸேததுஸ்ததஸ்தத்ர
    தாவுபௌ ப்ரமுகே ஸ்திதம் ।
    விவ்ருத்தமஸிரோக்ரீவம்
    கபந்தமுதரே முகம் ॥
    āsēdatustatastatra
    tāvubhau pramukhē sthitam ।
    vivṛddhamaṡirōgrīvam
    kabandhamudarē mukham ॥
    Then as they came nearer, both of them
    saw Kabandha there in front of them,
    who was of giant proportions, with no head,
    and with a mouth opening from his stomach.
    3.69.28 ரோமபிர்நிசிதைஸ்தீக்ஷ்ணை:
    மஹாகிரிமிவோச்ரிதம் ।
    நீலமேகநிபம் ரௌத்ரம்
    மேகஸ்தநிதநிஸ்வநம் ॥
    rōmabhirnicitaistīkṣṇaiḥ
    mahāgirimivōchritam ।
    nīlamēghanibhaṃ raudram
    mēghastanitanisvanam ॥
    His body was covered with a thick growth of needle-sharp hair.
    He was tall as a lofty mountain, big as a black cloud
    and frightening with a sound that
    resembled the thunder of a cloud.
    3.69.29-30 அக்நிஜ்வாலாநிகாஸேந
    லலாடஸ்தேந தீப்யதா ।
    மஹாபக்ஷ்மேண பிங்கேந
    விபுலேநாயதேந ச ।
    ஏகேநோரஸி கோரேண
    நயநேநாஸுதர்ஸிநா ।
    மஹாதம்ஷ்ட்ரோபபந்நம் தம்
    லேலிஹாநம் மஹாமுகம் ॥
    agnijvālānikāṡēna
    lalāṭasthēna dīpyatā ।
    mahāpakṣmēṇa piṅgēna
    vipulēnāyatēna ca ।
    ēkēnōrasi ghōrēṇa
    nayanēnāṡudarṡinā ।
    mahādaṃṣṭrōpapannaṃ taṃ
    lēlihānaṃ mahāmukham ॥
    His single yellow, baleful and quick-to-see eye,
    flashing like fire, wide and long with huge eyelids,
    was located on his forehead that stretched onto his chest.
    His mouth was huge with large fangs
    and tongue licking the lips.
    3.69.31 பக்ஷயந்தம் மஹாகோராந்
    ருக்ஷஸிம்ஹம்ருகத்விபாந் ।
    கோரௌ புஜௌ விகுர்வாணம்
    உபௌ யோஜநமாயதௌ ॥
    bhakṣayantaṃ mahāghōrān
    ṛkṣasiṃhamṛgadvipān ।
    ghōrau bhujau vikurvāṇam
    ubhau yōjanamāyatau ॥
    He was devouring wild and terrifying
    bears, lions, beasts and elephants,
    swinging his frightful arms that were a Yōjana long.
    3.69.32-33a கராப்யாம் விவிதாந்க்ருஹ்ய
    ருக்ஷாந்பக்ஷிகணாந்ம்ருகாந் ।
    ஆகர்ஷந்தம் விகர்ஷந்தம்
    அநேகாந்ம்ருகயூதபாந் ।
    ஸ்திதமாவ்ருத்ய பந்தாநம்
    தயோர்ப்ராத்ரோ: ப்ரபந்நயோ: ॥
    karābhyāṃ vividhāngṛhya
    ṛkṣānpakṣigaṇānmṛgān ।
    ākarṣantaṃ vikarṣantam
    anēkānmṛgayūthapān ।
    sthitamāvṛtya panthānam
    tayōrbhrātrōḥ prapannayōḥ ॥
    He was grabbing all kinds of bears,
    flocks of birds and beasts,
    and dragging them towards him.
    He stood blocking the way of
    the two brothers as they came near him.
    3.69.33b-34 அத தௌ ஸமபிக்ரம்ய
    க்ரோஸமாத்ரே ததர்ஸது: ।
    மஹாந்தம் தாருணம் பீமம்
    கபந்தம் புஜஸம்வ்ருதம் ।
    கபந்தமிவ ஸம்ஸ்தாநாத்
    அதிகோரப்ரதர்ஸநம் ॥
    atha tau samabhikramya
    krōṡamātrē dadarṡatuḥ ।
    mahāntaṃ dāruṇaṃ bhīmaṃ
    kabandhaṃ bhujasaṃvṛtam ।
    kabandhamiva saṃsthānāt
    atighōrapradarṡanam ॥
    As they walked down for a distance of one Krōṡa,
    they got a full view of the gigantic, cruel,
    frightful and terrible-looking Kabandha
    whose body had nothing but a trunk and hands.
    3.69.35 ஸ மஹாபாஹுரத்யர்தம்
    ப்ரஸார்ய விபுலௌ புஜௌ ।
    ஜக்ராஹ ஸஹிதாவேவ
    ராகவௌ பீடயந்பலாத் ॥
    sa mahābāhuratyartham
    prasārya vipulau bhujau ।
    jagrāha sahitāvēva
    rāghavau pīḍayanbalāt ॥
    He of gigantic hands stretched his long arms,
    and caught both the scions of Raghu simultaneously,
    with all his force, hurting them.
    3.69.36 கட்கிநௌ த்ருடதந்வாநௌ
    திக்மதேஜோவபுர்தரௌ ।
    ப்ராதரௌ விவஸம் ப்ராப்தௌ
    க்ருஷ்யமாணௌ மஹாபலௌ ॥
    khaḍginau dṛḍhadhanvānau
    tigmatējōvapurdharau ।
    bhrātarau vivaṡaṃ prāptau
    kṛṣyamāṇau mahābalau ॥
    Although armed with swords and strong bows
    and possessed with immense strength,
    and had bodies of blazing radiance,
    the two brothers lost control when dragged by him.
    இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
    ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    அரண்யகாண்டே ஏகோநஸப்ததிதமஸ்ஸர்க: ।
    ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
    ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
    araṇyakāṇḍē ēkōnasaptatitamassargaḥ ।
    Thus concludes the sixty ninth Sarga
    in Araṇya Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
