Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 58
In this Sarga, Rāma expresses his fear to Lakshmaṇa that Seetā may not be safe, and he would give up life if Seetā does not greet him with a smile when he reaches the Āṡrama.
3.58.1 ஸ த்ருஷ்ட்வா லக்ஷ்மணம் தீநம்
ஸூந்யே தஸரதாத்மஜ: ।
பர்யப்ருச்சத தர்மாத்மா
வைதேஹீமாகதம் விநா ॥
sa dṛṣṭvā lakṣmaṇaṃ dīnam
ṡūnyē daṡarathātmajaḥ ।
paryapṛcchata dharmātmā
vaidēhīmāgataṃ vinā ॥
On seeing Lakshmaṇa who was downcast
and had come leaving Vaidēhi alone,
the son of Daṡaratha, the Dharmātma,
asked him reflectively:
3.58.2 ப்ரஸ்திதம் தண்டகாரண்யம்
யா மாமநுஜகாம ஹ ।
க்வ ஸா லக்ஷ்மண வைதேஹீ
யாம் ஹித்வா த்வமிஹாऽऽகத: ॥
prasthitaṃ daṇḍakāraṇyam
yā māmanujagāma ha ।
kva sā lakṣmaṇa vaidēhī
yāṃ hitvā tvamihā''gataḥ ॥
O Lakshmaṇa! Where is the Vaidēhi
who followed me as I set out to Daṇḍaka Araṇya
and whom you left alone and came here!
3.58.3 ராஜ்யப்ரஷ்டஸ்ய தீநஸ்ய
தண்டகாந்பரிதாவத: ।
க்வ ஸா து:கஸஹாயா மே
வைதேஹீ தநுமத்யமா ॥
rājyabhraṣṭasya dīnasya
daṇḍakānparidhāvataḥ ।
kva sā duḥkhasahāyā mē
vaidēhī tanumadhyamā ॥
Where is the Vaidēhi of slender waist
who stood by the miserable me
during the difficult times when
I lost the kingdom and ran to Daṇḍaka! Rāma is at the worst of his times now. He is certain now that he has lost Seetā. He feels terrible about what happened.
He has more than one thing to feel bad about. He feels bad that he could not protect Seetā. He feels bad about her plight. He feels bad about not having her with him. In short, he thinks of himself as an idiot.
Consequently, he sees even his own past in a bad light. Instead of seeing himself as one who came to the Daṇḍaka to make his father a man of his word, or one who killed fourteen thousand Rākshasas singlehandedly, he now sees himself as an incapable and unworthy person, who was just allowed to go from the kingdom, unceremoniously.
3.58.4 யாம் விநா நோத்ஸஹே வீர
முஹூர்தமபி ஜீவிதும் ।
க்வ ஸா ப்ராணஸஹாயா மே
ஸீதா ஸுரஸுதோபமா ॥
yāṃ vinā nōtsahē vīra
muhūrtamapi jīvitum ।
kva sā prāṇasahāyā mē
sītā surasutōpamā ॥
Where is the Seetā, prop of my life,
who is like the daughter of Suras
without whom I would not like
to live even for a short while?
3.58.5 பதித்வமமராணாம் வா
ப்ருதிவ்யாஸ்சாபி லக்ஷ்மண ।
தாம் விநா தபநீயாபாம்
நேச்சேயம் ஜநகாத்மஜாம் ॥
patitvamamarāṇāṃ vā
pṛthivyāṡcāpi lakṣmaṇa ।
tāṃ vinā tapanīyābhām
nēcchēyaṃ janakātmajām ॥
Where is the daughter of Janaka, of golden complexion,
without whom, O Veera, I would not care to enjoy
even the lordship over the earth or over the Dēvas!
3.58.6 கச்சிஜ்ஜீவதி வைதேஹீ
ப்ராணை: ப்ரியதரா மம ।
கச்சித்ப்ரவ்ராஜநம் ஸௌம்ய
ந மே மித்யா பவிஷ்யதி ॥
kaccijjīvati vaidēhī
prāṇaiḥ priyatarā mama ।
kaccitpravrājanaṃ saumya
na mē mithyā bhaviṣyati ॥
My dear, I hope that Vaidēhi,
who is dearer than life to me, is alive!
I hope that my exile to Vana is not a failure!
3.58.7 ஸீதாநிமித்தம் ஸௌமித்ரே
ம்ருதே மயி கதே த்வயி ।
கச்சித்ஸகாமா ஸுகிதா
கைகேயீ ஸா பவிஷ்யதி ॥
sītānimittaṃ saumitrē
mṛtē mayi gatē tvayi ।
kaccitsakāmā sukhitā
kaikēyī sā bhaviṣyati ॥
I hope, O Sowmitri,
I would not be dead because of Seetā and
you would not have to go back (alone) making
Kaikēyee happy and her wish fulfilled!
3.58.8 ஸபுத்ரராஜ்யாம் ஸித்தார்தாம்
ம்ருதபுத்ரா தபஸ்விநீ ।
உபஸ்தாஸ்யதிகௌஸல்யா
கச்சித்ஸௌம்ய ந கேகயீம் ॥
saputrarājyāṃ siddhārthām
mṛtaputrā tapasvinī ।
upasthāsyatikausalyā
kaccitsaumya na kēkayīm ॥
I hope, my dear, with her son dead,
the grieving Kousalyā would not have
to serve Kaikēyee who would have her wish fulfilled
in having her son and kingdom to herself!
3.58.9 யதி ஜீவதி வைதேஹீ
கமிஷ்யாம்யாஸ்ரமம் புந: ।
ஸுவ்ருத்தா யதி வா வ்ருத்தா
ப்ராணாம்ஸ்த்யக்ஷ்யாமி லக்ஷ்மண ॥
yadi jīvati vaidēhī
gamiṣyāmyāṡramaṃ punaḥ ।
suvṛttā yadi vā vṛttā
prāṇāṃstyakṣyāmi lakṣmaṇa ॥
I can go back to the Āṡrama only if Vaidēhi is alive.
If she of great character has died,
I would (also) give up my life, O Lakshmaṇa!
3.58.10 யதி மாமாஸ்ரமகதம்
வைதேஹீ நாபிபாஷதே ।
புந: ப்ரஹஸிதா ஸீதா
விநஸிஷ்யாமி லக்ஷ்மண ॥
yadi māmāṡramagatam
vaidēhī nābhibhāṣatē ।
punaḥ prahasitā sītā
vinaṡiṣyāmi lakṣmaṇa ॥
I will all but be destroyed, O Lakshmaṇa,
if Seetā, the princess of Vidēha,
is not (there) to greet me with a smile
when I reach the Āṡrama!
3.58.11 ப்ரூஹி லக்ஷ்மண வைதேஹீ
யதி ஜீவதி வா ந வா ।
த்வயி ப்ரமத்தே ரக்ஷோபி:
பக்ஷிதா வா தபஸ்விநீ ॥
brūhi lakṣmaṇa vaidēhī
yadi jīvati vā na vā ।
tvayi pramattē rakṣōbhiḥ
bhakṣitā vā tapasvinī ॥
Tell me, Lakshmaṇa, is Vaidēhi alive or not?
I hope she, the despondent one,
was not devoured by the Rākshasas,
because you were not on full alert!
3.58.12 ஸுகுமாரீ ச பாலா ச
நித்யம் சாது:கதர்ஸிநீ ।
மத்வியோகேந வைதேஹீ
வ்யக்தம் ஸோசதி துர்மநா: ॥
sukumārī ca bālā ca
nityaṃ cāduḥkhadarṡinī ।
madviyōgēna vaidēhī
vyaktaṃ ṡōcati durmanāḥ ॥
The young and delicate Vaidēhi,
a stranger to sadness,
must be feeling terrible and crying,
being separated from me!
3.58.13 ஸர்வதா ரக்ஷஸா தேந
ஜிஹ்மேந ஸுதுராத்மநா ।
வததா லக்ஷ்மணேத்யுச்சை:
தவாபி ஜநிதம் பயம் ॥
sarvathā rakṣasā tēna
jihmēna sudurātmanā ।
vadatā lakṣmaṇētyuccaiḥ
tavāpi janitaṃ bhayam ॥
Understandably, fear must have
been engendered in you
when the crooked and wicked Rākshasa
let off the loud cry calling out, ‘O Lakshmaṇa!’ Ṡlōkas 13 through 20 is a short summary of what is elaborated in the next two Sargas. It is possible that some manuscripts had this short version while others had the long version and both are preserved by the scholars. This short version can be considered redundant, in light of the availability of the long version.
3.58.14 ஸ்ருதஸ்து ஸங்கே வைதேஹ்யா
ஸ ஸ்வரஸ்ஸத்ருஸோ மம ।
த்ரஸ்தயா ப்ரேஷிதஸ்த்வம் ச
த்ரஷ்டும் மாம் ஸீக்ரமாகத: ॥
ṡrutastu ṡaṅkē vaidēhyā
sa svarassadṛṡō mama ।
trastayā prēṣitastvaṃ ca
draṣṭuṃ māṃ ṡīghramāgataḥ ॥
I fear that Vaidēhi heard
that voice, so like mine,
and you came here in all haste to see me,
sent by her in her worry.
3.58.15 ஸர்வதா து க்ருதம் கஷ்டம்
ஸீதாமுத்ஸ்ருஜதா வநே ।
ப்ரதிகர்தும் ந்ருஸம்ஸாநாம்
ரக்ஷஸாம் தத்தமந்தரம் ॥
sarvathā tu kṛtaṃ kaṣṭam
sītāmutsṛjatā vanē ।
pratikartuṃ nṛṡaṃsānām
rakṣasāṃ dattamantaram ॥
By leaving her alone in the Vana
you have caused great trouble in many ways.
It gives a chance for those
cruel Rākshasas to take revenge.
3.58.16 து:கிதா: கரகாதேந
ராக்ஷஸா: பிஸிதாஸநா: ।
தைஸ்ஸீதா நிஹதா கோரை:
பவிஷ்யதி ந ஸம்ஸய: ॥
duḥkhitāḥ kharaghātēna
rākṣasāḥ piṡitāṡanāḥ ।
taissītā nihatā ghōraiḥ
bhaviṣyati na saṃṡayaḥ ॥
The flesh-eating Rākshasas are
very sad because Khara was killed;
Seetā will be killed by those
horrid creatures, without a doubt.
3.58.17 அஹோऽஸ்மிந் வ்யஸநே மக்ந:
ஸர்வதா ஸத்ருஸூதந ।
கிம் ந்விதாநீம் கரிஷ்யாமி
ஸங்கே ப்ராப்தவ்யமீத்ருஸம் ॥
ahō'smin vyasanē magnaḥ
sarvathā ṡatrusūdana ।
kiṃ nvidānīṃ kariṣyāmi
ṡaṅkē prāptavyamīdṛṡam ॥
Such a predicament has befallen and
I am completely sunk in this misery;
O destroyer of foes, what shall I do!
3.58.18 இதி ஸீதாம் வராரோஹாம்
சிந்தயந்நேவ ராகவ: ।
ஆஜகாம ஜநஸ்தாநம்
த்வரயா ஸஹ லக்ஷ்மண: ॥
iti sītāṃ varārōhām
cintayannēva rāghavaḥ ।
ājagāma janasthānam
tvarayā saha lakṣmaṇaḥ ॥
Worried thus about Seetā of excellent Kaṭee,
Rāghava reached Janasthāna quickly,
along with Lakshmaṇa.
3.58.19-20 விகர்ஹமாணோऽநுஜமார்தரூபம்
க்ஷுதா ஸ்ரமாச்சைவ பிபாஸயா ச ।
விநிஸ்ஸ்வஸந் ஸுஷ்கமுகோ விவர்ண:
ப்ரதிஸ்ரயம் ப்ராப்ய ஸமீக்ஷ்ய ஸூந்யம் ।
ஸ்வமாஸ்ரமம் ஸம்ப்ரவிகாஹ்ய வீரோ
விஹாரதேஸாநநுஸ்ருத்ய காம்ஸ்சித் ।
ஏதத்ததித்யேவ நிவாஸபூமௌ
ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டரோமா வ்யதிதோ பபூவ ॥
vigarhamāṇō'nujamārtarūpaṃ
kṣudhā ṡramāccaiva pipāsayā ca ।
viniṡṡvasan ṡuṣkamukhō vivarṇaḥ
pratiṡrayaṃ prāpya samīkṣya ṡūnyam ।
svamāṡramaṃ sampravigāhya vīrō
vihāradēṡānanusṛtya kāṃṡcit ।
ētattadityēva nivāsabhūmau
prahṛṣṭarōmā vyathitō babhūva ॥
Reproaching his younger brother
who was like an embodiment of distress,
that Veera reached his Āṡrama area,
with his mouth parched and his face pale,
and breathing heavily from hunger, fatigue and thirst.
Finding the place empty, and
ensuring it indeed was his Āṡrama,
by visiting the areas where they
used to spend time enjoying
and the grounds where they used to live,
he sank in agony, with his hair standing on its end.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே அஷ்டபஞ்சாஸஸ்ஸர்க: ।
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
araṇyakāṇḍē aṣṭapañcāṡassargaḥ ।
Thus concludes the fifty eighth Sarga
in Araṇya Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.

3.58.19-20 விகர்ஹமாணோऽநுஜமார்தரூபம்
க்ஷுதா ஸ்ரமாச்சைவ பிபாஸயா ச ।
விநிஸ்ஸ்வஸந் ஸுஷ்கமுகோ விவர்ண:
ப்ரதிஸ்ரயம் ப்ராப்ய ஸமீக்ஷ்ய ஸூந்யம் ।
ஸ்வமாஸ்ரமம் ஸம்ப்ரவிகாஹ்ய வீரோ
விஹாரதேஸாநநுஸ்ருத்ய காம்ஸ்சித் ।
ஏதத்ததித்யேவ நிவாஸபூமௌ
ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டரோமா வ்யதிதோ பபூவ ॥
vigarhamāṇō'nujamārtarūpaṃ
kṣudhā ṡramāccaiva pipāsayā ca ।
viniṡṡvasan ṡuṣkamukhō vivarṇaḥ
pratiṡrayaṃ prāpya samīkṣya ṡūnyam ।
svamāṡramaṃ sampravigāhya vīrō
vihāradēṡānanusṛtya kāṃṡcit ।
ētattadityēva nivāsabhūmau
prahṛṣṭarōmā vyathitō babhūva ॥
Reproaching his younger brother
who was like an embodiment of distress,
that Veera reached his Āṡrama area,
with his mouth parched and his face pale,
and breathing heavily from hunger, fatigue and thirst.
Finding the place empty, and
ensuring it indeed was his Āṡrama,
by visiting the areas where they
used to spend time enjoying
and the grounds where they used to live,
he sank in agony, with his hair standing on its end.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே அஷ்டபஞ்சாஸஸ்ஸர்க: ।
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
araṇyakāṇḍē aṣṭapañcāṡassargaḥ ।

in Araṇya Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
