Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 53
In this Sarga, Seetā, as she is being carried off helplessly by Rāvaṇa, taunts him for being the coward he is, in carrying her off when she was all alone. She warns him again that he cannot escape death at the hands of Rāma, who killed fourteen thousand Rākshasas single handedly without even taking the help of his brother. She makes it clear that she would not live for long without seeing her husband and being a captive of the enemy.
3.53.1 கமுத்பதந்தம் தம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
மைதிலீ ஜநகாத்மஜா ।
து:கிதா பரமோத்விக்நா
பயே மஹதி வர்திநீ ॥
khamutpatantaṃ taṃ dṛṣṭvā
maithilī janakātmajā ।
duḥkhitā paramōdvignā
bhayē mahati vartinī ॥
When she saw him rise into the sky,
Maithili, the daughter of Janaka,
felt miserable and extremely agitated
and was gripped by great fear.
3.53.2 ரோஷரோதநதாம்ராக்ஷீ
பீமாக்ஷம் ராக்ஷஸாதிபம் ।
ருதந்தீ கருணம் ஸீதா
ஹ்ரியமாணேதமப்ரவீத் ॥
rōṣarōdanatāmrākṣī
bhīmākṣaṃ rākṣasādhipam ।
rudantī karuṇaṃ sītā
hriyamāṇēdamabravīt ॥
Seetā, crying pitifully,
her eyes red as she cried and felt enraged,
said these words to that
lord of Rākshasas of terrifying eyes,
who was thus carrying her off:
3.53.3 ந வ்யபத்ரபஸே நீச
கர்மணாऽநேந ராவண ।
ஜ்ஞாத்வா விரஹிதாம் யந்மாம்
சோரயித்வா பலாயஸே ॥
na vyapatrapasē nīca
karmaṇā'nēna rāvaṇa ।
jñātvā virahitāṃ yanmām
cōrayitvā palāyasē ॥
O Rāvaṇa! You are fleeing like a thief,
after having stolen me when I was alone!
O base creature! Are you not
ashamed of what you are doing?
3.53.4 த்வயைவ நூநம் துஷ்டாத்மந்
பீருணா ஹர்துமிச்சதா ।
மமாபவாஹிதோ பர்தா
ம்ருகரூபேண மாயயா ॥
tvayaiva nūnaṃ duṣṭātman
bhīruṇā hartumicchatā ।
mamāpavāhitō bhartā
mṛgarūpēṇa māyayā ॥
O evil one, it indeed looks like
your plan to lure my husband away by
tricking (us) in the form of a magical deer,
in order to abduct me like a coward.
3.53.5 யோ ஹி மாமுத்யதஸ்த்ராதும்
ஸோऽப்யயம் விநிபாதித: ।
க்ருத்ரராஜ: புராணோऽஸௌ
ஸ்வஸுரஸ்ய ஸகா மம ॥
yō hi māmudyatastrātum
sō'pyayaṃ vinipātitaḥ ।
gṛdhrarājaḥ purāṇō'sau
ṡvaṡurasya sakhā mama ॥
Even the king among eagles,
a good old friend of my father-in-law
who exerted himself to rescue me
was struck down now.
3.53.6 பரமம் கலு தே வீர்யம்
த்ருஸ்யதே ராக்ஷஸாதம ।
விஸ்ராவ்ய நாமதேயம் ஹி
யுத்தேநாஸ்மி ஜிதா த்வயா ॥
paramaṃ khalu tē vīryam
dṛṡyatē rākṣasādhama ।
viṡrāvya nāmadhēyaṃ hi
yuddhēnāsmi jitā tvayā ॥
You base Rākshasa! The height of your prowess
is clearly evident now that you could not
announce your name and win me in a battle!
3.53.7 ஈத்ருஸம் கர்ஹிதம் கர்ம
கதம் க்ருத்வா ந லஜ்ஜஸே ।
ஸ்த்ரியாஸ்ச ஹரணம் நீச
ரஹிதே ச பரஸ்ய ச ॥
īdṛṡaṃ garhitaṃ karma
kathaṃ kṛtvā na lajjasē ।
striyāṡca haraṇaṃ nīca
rahitē ca parasya ca ॥
How is it that you are not ashamed, O base creature,
to do an abominable act like this,
of abducting another’s woman when she is alone?
3.53.8 கதயிஷ்யந்தி லோகேஷு
புருஷா: கர்ம குத்ஸிதம் ।
ஸுந்ருஸம்ஸமதர்மிஷ்டம்
தவ ஸௌண்டீர்யமாநிந: ॥
kathayiṣyanti lōkēṣu
puruṣāḥ karma kutsitam ।
sunṛṡaṃsamadharmiṣṭham
tava ṡauṇḍīryamāninaḥ ॥
Men of the world, for ages to come,
will recount this act as damnable,
extremely cruel and unrighteous,
while you may preen yourself for your valor.
3.53.9 திக்தே ஸௌர்யம் ச ஸத்த்வம் ச
யத்த்வம் கதிதவாம்ஸ்ததா ।
குலாக்ரோஸகரம் லேகே
திக்தே சாரித்ரமீத்ருஸம் ॥
dhiktē ṡauryaṃ ca sattvaṃ ca
yattvaṃ kathitavāṃstadā ।
kulākrōṡakaraṃ lēkē
dhiktē cāritramīdṛṡam ॥
Dhik, your valor and strength
that you have boasted of!
Dhik, the kind of conduct that will
make your entire lineage feel bad
(forever) in this world! It was not too long ago that families of common descent used to feel like a single unit, taking pride not only in their culture and cuisine, but also in their upright behavior. People used to hang their head in shame even if one of the members of their lineage behaved in a questionable manner.
3.53.10 கிம் கர்தும் ஸக்யமேவம் ஹி
யஜ்ஜவேநைவ தாவஸி ।
முஹூர்தமபி திஷ்டஸ்வ
ந ஜீவந்ப்ரதியாஸ்யஸி ॥
kiṃ kartuṃ ṡakyamēvaṃ hi
yajjavēnaiva dhāvasi ।
muhūrtamapi tiṣṭhasva
na jīvanpratiyāsyasi ॥
What can one do when you
run away in headlong flight like this?
Stop even for a brief while,
and you will not escape with your life.
3.53.11 ந ஹி சக்ஷுஷ்பதம் ப்ராப்ய
தயோ: பார்திவபுத்ரயோ: ।
ஸஸைந்யோऽபி ஸமர்தஸ்த்வம்
முஹூர்தமபி ஜீவிதும் ॥
na hi cakṣuṣpathaṃ prāpya
tayōḥ pārthivaputrayōḥ ।
sasainyō'pi samarthastvam
muhūrtamapi jīvitum ॥
If you are only seen by the duo of princes,
you will not, even if backed by your army,
survive even for a Muhūrta.
3.53.12 ந த்வம் தயோஸ்ஸரஸ்பர்ஸம்
ஸோடும் ஸக்த: கதஞ்சந ।
வநே ப்ரஜ்வலிதஸ்யேவ
ஸ்பர்ஸமக்நேர்விஹம்கம: ॥
na tvaṃ tayōṡṡarasparṡam
sōḍhuṃ ṡaktaḥ kathañcana ।
vanē prajvalitasyēva
sparṡamagnērvihaṃgamaḥ ॥
There is no way you can withstand
the strike of their arrows,
just as a bird cannot, the
touch of a blazing forest fire.
3.53.13 ஸாது குர்வாऽऽத்மந: பத்யம்
ஸாது மாம் முஞ்ச ராவண ।
மத்ப்ரதர்ஷணருஷ்டோ ஹி
ப்ராத்ரா ஸஹ பதிர்மம ।
விதாஸ்யதி விநாஸாய
த்வம் மாம் யதி ந முஞ்சஸி ॥
sādhu kurvā''tmanaḥ pathyam
sādhu māṃ muñca rāvaṇa ।
matpradharṣaṇaruṣṭō hi
bhrātrā saha patirmama ।
vidhāsyati vināṡāya
tvaṃ māṃ yadi na muñcasi ॥
O Rāvaṇa! Consider your own interest carefully
and release me, in the right manner.
If you do not let me go,
my husband, along with his brother,
enraged for violating me,
will make an all out effort to destroy you.
3.53.14 யேந த்வம் வ்யவஸாயேந
பலாந்மாம் ஹர்துமிச்சஸி ।
வ்யவஸாயஸ்ஸ தே நீச
பவிஷ்யதி நிரர்தக: ॥
yēna tvaṃ vyavasāyēna
balānmāṃ hartumicchasi ।
vyavasāyassa tē nīca
bhaviṣyati nirarthakaḥ ॥
Whatever endeavor you have undertaken, O base creature,
in abducting me by force, will end up being of no avail!
3.53.15 ந ஹ்யஹம் தமபஸ்யந்தீ
பர்தாரம் விபுதோபமம் ।
உத்ஸஹே ஸத்ருவஸகா
ப்ராணாந்தாரயிதும் சிரம் ॥
na hyahaṃ tamapaṡyantī
bhartāraṃ vibudhōpamam ।
utsahē ṡatruvaṡagā
prāṇāndhārayituṃ ciram ॥
Without seeing my husband, who is like a Dēva,
and being a captive of an enemy
I would have no interest in living for long!
3.53.16 ந நூநம் சாத்மந: பத்யம்
ஸ்ரேயோ வா ஸமவேக்ஷஸே ।
ம்ருத்யுகாலே யதா மர்த்யோ
விபரீதாநி ஸேவதே ॥
na nūnaṃ cātmanaḥ pathyam
ṡrēyō vā samavēkṣasē ।
mṛtyukālē yathā martyō
viparītāni sēvatē ॥
Man succumbs to weird behavior
as the time of death nears.
You similarly, and certainly, do not
seem to know what is good for you
and would bring prosperity to you.
3.53.17 முமூர்ஷூணாம் ஹி ஸர்வேஷாம்
யத்பத்யம் தந்ந ரோசதே ।
பஸ்யாம்யத்ய ஹி கண்டேத்வாம்
காலபாஸாவபாஸிதம் ॥
mumūrṣūṇāṃ hi sarvēṣām
yatpathyaṃ tanna rōcatē ।
paṡyāmyadya hi kaṇṭhētvām
kālapāṡāvapāṡitam ॥
Everyone, when death knocks on the door,
feels (weirdly) averse to what is good for them.
I can clearly see now, the
noose of death tied around your neck.
3.53.18 யதா சாஸ்மிந்பயஸ்தாநே
ந பிபேஷி தஸாநந ।
வ்யக்தம் ஹிரண்மயாந் ஹி த்வம்
ஸம்பஸ்யஸி மஹீருஹாந் ॥
yathā cāsminbhayasthānē
na bibhēṣi daṡānana ।
vyaktaṃ hiraṇmayān hi tvam
sampaṡyasi mahīruhān ॥
You are not even worried, O ten-faced one,
when you should be really scared.
It is clear that you are seeing golden trees. There is a saying from olden times, that people see golden trees in their vision when they are about to die. This expression is used earlier in Ṡlōka 3.47.38 also.
3.53.19 நதீம் வைதரணீம் கோராம்
ருதிரௌகநிவாஹிநீம் ।
அஸிபத்ரவநம் சைவ
பீமம் பஸ்யஸி ராவண ॥
nadīṃ vaitaraṇīṃ ghōrām
rudhiraughanivāhinīm ।
asipatravanaṃ caiva
bhīmaṃ paṡyasi rāvaṇa ॥
You will see the dreadful river of
Vaitaraṇi with its flood of gore,
and the terrible forest where
trees have swords for leaves, O Rāvaṇa! River Vaitaraṇi, forest with trees having swords for leaves and Ṡālmali trees with spikes are seen in hell.
3.53.20 தப்தகாஞ்சநபுஷ்பாம் ச
வைடூர்யப்ரவரச்சதாம் ।
த்ரக்ஷ்யஸே ஸால்மலீம் தீக்ஷ்ணாம்
ஆயஸை: கண்டகைஸ்சிதாம் ॥
taptakāñcanapuṣpāṃ ca
vaiḍūryapravaracchadām ।
drakṣyasē ṡālmalīṃ tīkṣṇām
āyasaiḥ kaṇṭakaiṡcitām ॥
You will see the Ṡālmali tree
covered with iron spikes and bearing
flowers of molten gold and leaves of lazulite.
3.53.21 ந ஹி த்வமீத்ருஸம் க்ருத்வா
தஸ்யாலீகம் மஹாத்மந: ।
தரிதும் ஸக்ஷ்யஸி சிரம்
விஷம் பீத்வேவ நிர்க்ருண: ॥
na hi tvamīdṛṡaṃ kṛtvā
tasyālīkaṃ mahātmanaḥ ।
dharituṃ ṡakṣyasi ciram
viṣaṃ pītvēva nirghṛṇaḥ ॥
Committing this kind of offence
against that Mahātma, O pitiless one,
you can no more hope to live for long,
like you would not after drinking poison.
3.53.22 பத்தஸ்த்வம் காலபாஸேந
துர்நிவாரேண ராவண ।
க்வகதோ லப்ஸ்யஸே ஸர்ம
பர்துர்மம மஹாத்மந: ॥
baddhastvaṃ kālapāṡēna
durnivārēṇa rāvaṇa ।
kvagatō lapsyasē ṡarma
bharturmama mahātmanaḥ ॥
O Rāvaṇa! You are now tied by
the noose of death, from which there is no escape.
Where can you flee to find respite
from my husband, the Mahātma?
3.53.23-24 நிமேஷாந்தரமாத்ரேண
விநா ப்ராத்ரா மஹாவநே ।
ராக்ஷஸா நிஹதா யேந
ஸஹஸ்ராணி சதுர்தஸ ।
ஸ கதம் ராகவோ வீர:
ஸர்வாஸ்த்ரகுஸலோ பலீ ।
ந த்வாம் ஹந்யாச்சரைஸ்தீக்ஷ்ணை:
இஷ்டபார்யாபஹாரிணம் ॥
nimēṣāntaramātrēṇa
vinā bhrātrā mahāvanē ।
rākṣasā nihatā yēna
sahasrāṇi caturdaṡa ।
sa kathaṃ rāghavō vīraḥ
sarvāstrakuṡalō balī ।
na tvāṃ hanyāccharaistīkṣṇaiḥ
iṣṭabhāryāpahāriṇam ॥
Why would the mighty strong Rāghava,
the Veera, who is skilled in all Astras and
who killed fourteen thousand Rākshasas in a blink
without even taking the help of his brother,
refrain from killing you with his sharp arrows,
for abducting his wife?
3.53.25 ஏதச்சாந்யச்ச பருஷம்
வைதேஹீ ராவணாங்ககா ।
பயஸோகஸமாவிஷ்டா
கருணம் விலலாப ஹ ॥
ētaccānyacca paruṣam
vaidēhī rāvaṇāṅkagā ।
bhayaṡōkasamāviṣṭā
karuṇaṃ vilalāpa ha ॥
Saying many a strong word in this strain
Vaidēhi, trapped on the lap of Rāvaṇa,
cried pitifully taken over by fear and grief.
3.53.26 ததா ப்ருஸார்தாம் பஹுசைவ பாஷிணீம்
விலாபபூர்வம் கருணம் ச பாமிநீம் ।
ஜஹார பாப: கருணம் விவேஷ்டதீம்
ந்ருபாத்மஜாமாகதகாத்ரவேபதும் ॥
tathā bhṛṡārtāṃ bahucaiva bhāṣiṇīṃ
vilāpapūrvaṃ karuṇaṃ ca bhāminīm ।
jahāra pāpaḥ karuṇaṃ vivēṣṭatīṃ
nṛpātmajāmāgatagātravēpathum ॥
The sinful one thus carried off
the young and beautiful princess,
who was writhing pitiably and
trembling all over, distraught with grief, and
saying many a thing in a pitiful and woeful manner.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே த்ரிபஞ்சாஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
araṇyakāṇḍē tripañcāṡassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the fifty third Sarga
in Araṇya Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,

bhaviṣyati nirarthakaḥ ॥
Whatever endeavor you have undertaken, O base creature,
in abducting me by force, will end up being of no avail!
3.53.15 ந ஹ்யஹம் தமபஸ்யந்தீ
பர்தாரம் விபுதோபமம் ।
உத்ஸஹே ஸத்ருவஸகா
ப்ராணாந்தாரயிதும் சிரம் ॥
na hyahaṃ tamapaṡyantī
bhartāraṃ vibudhōpamam ।
utsahē ṡatruvaṡagā
prāṇāndhārayituṃ ciram ॥
Without seeing my husband, who is like a Dēva,
and being a captive of an enemy
I would have no interest in living for long!
3.53.16 ந நூநம் சாத்மந: பத்யம்
ஸ்ரேயோ வா ஸமவேக்ஷஸே ।
ம்ருத்யுகாலே யதா மர்த்யோ
விபரீதாநி ஸேவதே ॥
na nūnaṃ cātmanaḥ pathyam
ṡrēyō vā samavēkṣasē ।
mṛtyukālē yathā martyō
viparītāni sēvatē ॥
Man succumbs to weird behavior
as the time of death nears.
You similarly, and certainly, do not
seem to know what is good for you
and would bring prosperity to you.
3.53.17 முமூர்ஷூணாம் ஹி ஸர்வேஷாம்
யத்பத்யம் தந்ந ரோசதே ।
பஸ்யாம்யத்ய ஹி கண்டேத்வாம்
காலபாஸாவபாஸிதம் ॥
mumūrṣūṇāṃ hi sarvēṣām
yatpathyaṃ tanna rōcatē ।
paṡyāmyadya hi kaṇṭhētvām
kālapāṡāvapāṡitam ॥
Everyone, when death knocks on the door,
feels (weirdly) averse to what is good for them.
I can clearly see now, the
noose of death tied around your neck.
3.53.18 யதா சாஸ்மிந்பயஸ்தாநே
ந பிபேஷி தஸாநந ।
வ்யக்தம் ஹிரண்மயாந் ஹி த்வம்
ஸம்பஸ்யஸி மஹீருஹாந் ॥
yathā cāsminbhayasthānē
na bibhēṣi daṡānana ।
vyaktaṃ hiraṇmayān hi tvam
sampaṡyasi mahīruhān ॥
You are not even worried, O ten-faced one,
when you should be really scared.
It is clear that you are seeing golden trees. There is a saying from olden times, that people see golden trees in their vision when they are about to die. This expression is used earlier in Ṡlōka 3.47.38 also.
3.53.19 நதீம் வைதரணீம் கோராம்
ருதிரௌகநிவாஹிநீம் ।
அஸிபத்ரவநம் சைவ
பீமம் பஸ்யஸி ராவண ॥
nadīṃ vaitaraṇīṃ ghōrām
rudhiraughanivāhinīm ।
asipatravanaṃ caiva
bhīmaṃ paṡyasi rāvaṇa ॥
You will see the dreadful river of
Vaitaraṇi with its flood of gore,
and the terrible forest where
trees have swords for leaves, O Rāvaṇa! River Vaitaraṇi, forest with trees having swords for leaves and Ṡālmali trees with spikes are seen in hell.
3.53.20 தப்தகாஞ்சநபுஷ்பாம் ச
வைடூர்யப்ரவரச்சதாம் ।
த்ரக்ஷ்யஸே ஸால்மலீம் தீக்ஷ்ணாம்
ஆயஸை: கண்டகைஸ்சிதாம் ॥
taptakāñcanapuṣpāṃ ca
vaiḍūryapravaracchadām ।
drakṣyasē ṡālmalīṃ tīkṣṇām
āyasaiḥ kaṇṭakaiṡcitām ॥
You will see the Ṡālmali tree
covered with iron spikes and bearing
flowers of molten gold and leaves of lazulite.
3.53.21 ந ஹி த்வமீத்ருஸம் க்ருத்வா
தஸ்யாலீகம் மஹாத்மந: ।
தரிதும் ஸக்ஷ்யஸி சிரம்
விஷம் பீத்வேவ நிர்க்ருண: ॥
na hi tvamīdṛṡaṃ kṛtvā
tasyālīkaṃ mahātmanaḥ ।
dharituṃ ṡakṣyasi ciram
viṣaṃ pītvēva nirghṛṇaḥ ॥
Committing this kind of offence
against that Mahātma, O pitiless one,
you can no more hope to live for long,
like you would not after drinking poison.
3.53.22 பத்தஸ்த்வம் காலபாஸேந
துர்நிவாரேண ராவண ।
க்வகதோ லப்ஸ்யஸே ஸர்ம
பர்துர்மம மஹாத்மந: ॥
baddhastvaṃ kālapāṡēna
durnivārēṇa rāvaṇa ।
kvagatō lapsyasē ṡarma
bharturmama mahātmanaḥ ॥
O Rāvaṇa! You are now tied by
the noose of death, from which there is no escape.
Where can you flee to find respite
from my husband, the Mahātma?
3.53.23-24 நிமேஷாந்தரமாத்ரேண
விநா ப்ராத்ரா மஹாவநே ।
ராக்ஷஸா நிஹதா யேந
ஸஹஸ்ராணி சதுர்தஸ ।
ஸ கதம் ராகவோ வீர:
ஸர்வாஸ்த்ரகுஸலோ பலீ ।
ந த்வாம் ஹந்யாச்சரைஸ்தீக்ஷ்ணை:
இஷ்டபார்யாபஹாரிணம் ॥
nimēṣāntaramātrēṇa
vinā bhrātrā mahāvanē ।
rākṣasā nihatā yēna
sahasrāṇi caturdaṡa ।
sa kathaṃ rāghavō vīraḥ
sarvāstrakuṡalō balī ।
na tvāṃ hanyāccharaistīkṣṇaiḥ
iṣṭabhāryāpahāriṇam ॥
Why would the mighty strong Rāghava,
the Veera, who is skilled in all Astras and
who killed fourteen thousand Rākshasas in a blink
without even taking the help of his brother,
refrain from killing you with his sharp arrows,
for abducting his wife?
3.53.25 ஏதச்சாந்யச்ச பருஷம்
வைதேஹீ ராவணாங்ககா ।
பயஸோகஸமாவிஷ்டா
கருணம் விலலாப ஹ ॥
ētaccānyacca paruṣam
vaidēhī rāvaṇāṅkagā ।
bhayaṡōkasamāviṣṭā
karuṇaṃ vilalāpa ha ॥
Saying many a strong word in this strain
Vaidēhi, trapped on the lap of Rāvaṇa,
cried pitifully taken over by fear and grief.
3.53.26 ததா ப்ருஸார்தாம் பஹுசைவ பாஷிணீம்
விலாபபூர்வம் கருணம் ச பாமிநீம் ।
ஜஹார பாப: கருணம் விவேஷ்டதீம்
ந்ருபாத்மஜாமாகதகாத்ரவேபதும் ॥
tathā bhṛṡārtāṃ bahucaiva bhāṣiṇīṃ
vilāpapūrvaṃ karuṇaṃ ca bhāminīm ।
jahāra pāpaḥ karuṇaṃ vivēṣṭatīṃ
nṛpātmajāmāgatagātravēpathum ॥
The sinful one thus carried off
the young and beautiful princess,
who was writhing pitiably and
trembling all over, distraught with grief, and
saying many a thing in a pitiful and woeful manner.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே த்ரிபஞ்சாஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
araṇyakāṇḍē tripañcāṡassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the fifty third Sarga
in Araṇya Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
