    Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 52

    Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 52
In this Sarga, Seetā cries for Jaṭāyu who has been done to death. She cries pitifully saying, ‘Save me, O Rāma, O Lakshmaṇa!’. She clings to the trees hugging them tightly, but Rāvaṇa snatches her away. Lord Brahma, however, considers the job (destruction of Rāvaṇa) to be all but done. The Ṛshis feel sad and happy at once.
It is a scene of high contrast, with the delicate and beautiful Seetā seen next to Rāvaṇa, who is like a black cloud. As she is carried off with speed, the flowers on her head and ornaments on her body fall on the ground, scattered. The beasts, birds, ponds, mountains, sun and the Dēvatas of the Vana cry for her.

She, of face resembling the lord of stars,
    wailed aloud bitterly seeing the
lord of eagles thus been done to death by Rāvaṇa:
Moon is the lord of stars.

    People certainly get an inkling
of the onset of good or evil
from the sounds of the birds
and changes in their own body. Changes in the body, such as a twitching eye is said to portend the onset of good or evil. A twitch in the right eye is considered a good omen and twitch in the left eye is considered a bad omen, for men, and vice versa for women.

O Rāma! You certainly do not know
the great calamity that has befallen me.
The birds and beasts are certainly
    rushing to Kākutstha for the
sake of (conveying the news about) me!

    ‘Save me, save me now,
    O Kākutstha, and you Lakshmaṇa!’
cried that best of the women in her terror,
as if they were within earshot.

Rāvaṇa, the lord of the Rākshasas,
dashed to her as she wept like one forlorn,
her garlands and ornaments all crumpled.

Bereft of Rāma, crying ‘O Rāma, O Rāma’,
she clung to the giant trees like a vine.
And the lord of the Rākshasas,
who looked like the lord of Death,
    bringing death upon himself,
caught her by the hair saying,

    With Seetā thus violated,
the world was enveloped in darkness.
All its creatures, stationary and moving,
found the norms that govern them come to null.
No wind blew there and the sun lost his luster.

All the great Ṛshis who lived in Daṇḍaka Araṇya,
felt sad and happy at once,
sad for Seetā being thus touched,
    and happy knowing that the
    destruction of Rāvaṇa was imminent
(at last) by the turn of destiny.

Rāvaṇa, the lord of the Rākshasas,
rose up into the sky, carrying her off,

The princess, with her body covered in
jewels of burnished gold and garments of yellow silk,
shone like a lightning flash from the Sudāma mountain. Vālmeeki does not fail to note the visuals of the scene even at the time of such a sad event, and narrates them beautifully.

The red and fragrant lotus petals worn by
Vaidēhi, the home of all auspiciousness,
    fell scattered all over Rāvaṇa.

Her face exhausted by crying, tears wiped,
    nevertheless with lovely forehead,
    beautiful red lips, handsome nose,
tresses that were jet-black to the end,
flawless like the lotus that had just bloomed,
and adorned with flashing white teeth,
looked, as she was being carried off
by Rāvaṇa on his lap in the sky,
like the moon that had burst
through a rift in the clouds.

    Her beautiful face, trembling as

    Janaka’s daughter of golden complexion,

    set against Rāvaṇa, looked like
a lightning flash against a cloud.

a black cloud that was rumbling with lightning.
