Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 47
There are three parts in this Sarga.
First, Seetā, in response to the inquiry of Rāvaṇa, from the previous Sarga, tells about herself, her husband and how he was exiled from the kingdom by his father in order to keep the word he had given to his wife Kaikēyee.
Then she asks about the details of the guest, Rāvaṇa disguised as a Brāhmaṇa. Then Rāvaṇa reveals who he really is and how infatuated he is with her. He asks her to become the chief among his queens and enjoy life along with him in Laṅkā, a great city built on top of a mountain in an island.
Then Seetā lambasts Rāvaṇa for daring to covet her. She shows her contempt for him and tells him that there is that kind of a difference between him and Rāma that exists between a jackal and a lion. Coveting a lioness like her, the wife of Rāma, she warns him, is like trying to capture fire in a piece cloth.
3.47.1 ராவணேந து வைதேஹீ
ததா ப்ருஷ்டா ஜிஹீர்ஷுணா ।
பரிவ்ராஜகரூபேண
ஸஸம்ஸாத்மாநமாத்மநா ॥
rāvaṇēna tu vaidēhī

Thus asked by Rāvaṇa
who was there to abduct her,
albeit in the form of a Parivrājaka,
she told all about herself.

அநுக்தோ ஹி ஸபேத மாம் ।
இதி த்யாத்வா முஹூர்தம் து
ஸீதா வசநமப்ரவீத் ॥

iti dhyātvā muhūrtaṃ tu
sītā vacanamabravīt ॥
Keeping in mind that the guest
was a Brāhmaṇa who might curse her
if she spoke anything inappropriate,
Seetā said the following words:
3.47.3 துஹிதா ஜநகஸ்யாஹம்
மைதிலஸ்ய மஹாத்மந: ।
ஸீதா நாம்நாஸ்மி பத்ரம் தே
ராமபார்யா த்விஜோத்தம ॥
duhitā janakasyāham
maithilasya mahātmanaḥ ।
sītā nāmnāsmi bhadraṃ tē
rāmabhāryā dvijōttama ॥
O eminent Brāhmaṇa! May all bode well for you!
I am the daughter of Mahātma Janaka of Mithilā.
My name is Seetā. I am the wife of Rāma.
3.47.4 உஷித்வா த்வாதஸ ஸமா
இக்ஷ்வாகுணாம் நிவேஸநே ।
புஞ்ஜநா மாநுஷாந்போகாந்
ஸர்வகாமஸம்ருத்திநீ ॥
uṣitvā dvādaṡa samā
ikṣvākuṇāṃ nivēṡanē ।
bhuñjanā mānuṣānbhōgān
sarvakāmasamṛddhinī ॥
I stayed for twelve years in the house of Ikshwākus,
enjoying all luxuries a human can afford, in abundance.
3.47.5 ததஸ்த்ரயோதஸே வர்ஷே
ராஜாऽமந்த்ரயத ப்ரபு: ।
அபிஷேசயிதும் ராமம்
ஸமேதோ ராஜமந்த்ரிபி: ॥
tatastrayōdaṡē varṣē
rājā'mantrayata prabhuḥ ।
abhiṣēcayituṃ rāmam
samētō rājamantribhiḥ ॥
Then, in the thirteenth year,
the King, the lord, along with
all the royal ministers
thought of consecrating Rāma to the throne.
3.47.6 தஸ்மிந்ஸம்ப்ரியமாணே து
ராகவஸ்யாபிஷேசநே ।
கைகேயீ நாம பர்தாரம்
ஆர்யா ஸா யாசதே வரம் ॥
tasminsambhriyamāṇē tu
rāghavasyābhiṣēcanē ।
kaikēyī nāma bhartāram
āryā sā yācatē varam ॥
When the preparations were afoot
for the coronation of Rāghava,
the noble lady by name Kaikēyee
asked her husband for a boon.
3.47.7-8a ப்ரதிக்ருஹ்ய து கைகேயீ
ஸ்வஸுரம் ஸுக்ருதேந மே ।
மம ப்ரவ்ராஜநம் பர்து:
பரதஸ்யாபிஷேசநம் ।
த்வாவயாசத பர்தாரம்
ஸத்யஸந்தம் ந்ருபோத்தமம் ॥
pratigṛhya tu kaikēyī
ṡvaṡuraṃ sukṛtēna mē ।
mama pravrājanaṃ bhartuḥ
bharatasyābhiṣēcanam ।
dvāvayācata bhartāram
satyasandhaṃ nṛpōttamam ॥
Kaikēyee, as a reward for
the favor she had done earlier,
asked her husband, the best of the kings,
the one who always kept his word, two boons:
to send my husband in exile and
to consecrate Bharata to the throne.
3.47.8b-9a நாத்ய போக்ஷ்யே ந ச ஸ்வப்ஸ்யே
ந பாஸ்யேச கதஞ்சந ।
ஏஷ மே ஜீவிதஸ்யாந்தோ
ராமோ யத்யபிஷிச்யதே ॥
nādya bhōkṣyē na ca svapsyē
na pāsyēca kathañcana ।
ēṣa mē jīvitasyāntō
rāmō yadyabhiṣicyatē ॥
‘I am, in no way, going to eat, drink or sleep
and will end my life, if Rāma is consecrated!’
3.47.9b-10a இதி ப்ருவாணாம் கைகேயீம்
ஸ்வஸுரோ மே ஸ மாநத: ।
அயாசதார்தைரந்வர்தை:
ந ச யாஞ்சாம் சகார ஸா ॥
iti bruvāṇāṃ kaikēyīm
ṡvaṡurō mē sa mānadaḥ ।
ayācatārthairanvarthaiḥ
na ca yāñcāṃ cakāra sā ॥
When Kaikēyee asked thus,
my father-in-law who treated everyone with respect,
begged hard of her, promising many a desirable thing,
but she would not accede to his request.
3.47.10b-11a மம பர்தாமஹாதேஜா
வயஸா பஞ்சவிம்ஸக: ।
அஷ்டாதஸ ஹி வர்ஷாணி
மம ஜந்மநி கண்யதே ॥
mama bhartāmahātējā
vayasā pañcaviṃṡakaḥ ।
aṣṭādaṡa hi varṣāṇi
mama janmani gaṇyatē ॥
My supremely powerful husband
at that time, was twenty five years old
and eighteen years had passed since my birth.
3.47.11b-12a ராமேதி ப்ரதிதோ லோகே
குணவாந்ஸத்யவாந்ஸுசி: ।
விஸாலாக்ஷோ மஹாபாஹு:
ஸர்வபூதஹிதே ரத: ॥
rāmēti prathitō lōkē
guṇavānsatyavānṡuciḥ ।
viṡālākṣō mahābāhuḥ
sarvabhūtahitē rataḥ ॥
Rāma of mighty arm and wide eyes
is well known in the world
as a man of many merits and
as a man of his word,
clean in every sense and
interested in the well being of everyone.
3.47.12b-13a காமார்தஸ்து மஹாதேஜா:
பிதா தஸரதஸ்ஸ்வயம் ।
கைகேய்யா: ப்ரியகாமார்தம்
தம் ராமம் நாப்யஷேசயத் ॥
kāmārtastu mahātējāḥ
pitā daṡarathassvayam ।
kaikēyyāḥ priyakāmārtham
taṃ rāmaṃ nābhyaṣēcayat ॥
His father Daṡaratha of mighty power,
taken over by his love for Kaikēyee,
did not consecrate Rāma, to fulfill her dear wish.
3.47.13b-14a அபிஷேகாய து பிது:
ஸமீபம் ராமமாகதம் ।
கைகேயீ மம பர்தாரம்
இத்யுவாச த்ருதம் வச: ॥
abhiṣēkāya tu pituḥ
samīpaṃ rāmamāgatam ।
kaikēyī mama bhartāram
ityuvāca dhṛtaṃ vacaḥ ॥
To my husband, who went to take the
audience of his father for being consecrated,
Kaikēyee spoke these words in no uncertain terms:
3.47.14b-15a தவ பித்ரா ஸமாஜ்ஞப்தம்
மமேதம் ஸ்ருணு ராகவ ।
பரதாய ப்ரதாதவ்யம்
இதம் ராஜ்யமகண்டகம் ॥
tava pitrā samājñaptam
mamēdaṃ ṡṛṇu rāghava ।
bharatāya pradātavyam
idaṃ rājyamakaṇṭakam ॥
O Rāghava! Listen! By the orders of Your father,
this kingdom must be handed over to Bharata,
without (causing) any trouble!
3.47.15b-16a த்வயா ஹி கலு வஸ்தவ்யம்
நவ வர்ஷாணி பஞ்ச ச ।
வநே ப்ரவ்ரஜ காகுத்ஸ்த
பிதரம் மோசயாந்ருதாந் ॥
tvayā hi khalu vastavyam
nava varṣāṇi pañca ca ।
vanē pravraja kākutstha
pitaraṃ mōcayānṛtān ॥
O Kākutstha! You have to go in exile
and stay in the Vana for nine and five years
to save your father from the imputation of untruth!
3.47.16b-17a ததேத்யுக்த்வா ச தாம் ராம:
கைகேயீமகுதோபய: ।
சகார தத்வசஸ்தஸ்யா
மம பர்தா த்ருடவ்ரத: ॥
tathētyuktvā ca tāṃ rāmaḥ
kaikēyīmakutōbhayaḥ ।
cakāra tadvacastasyā
mama bhartā dṛḍhavrataḥ ॥
Rāma, my husband who is not afraid of anything
and is faithful to his creed,
said ‘Yes’ and did in accordance with her word.
3.47.17b-18a தத்யாந்ந ப்ரதிக்ருஹ்ணீயாத்
ஸத்யம் ப்ரூயாந்ந சாந்ருதம் ।
ஏதத்ப்ராஹ்மண ராமஸ்ய
த்ர்ருவம் வ்ரதமநுத்தமம் ॥
dadyānna pratigṛhṇīyāt
satyaṃ brūyānna cānṛtam ।
ētadbrāhmaṇa rāmasya
dhrṛvaṃ vratamanuttamam ॥
O Brāhmaṇa, Rāma, at all costs,
follows his lofty creed of
being at the giving, but not the receiving end,
and speaking the truth and not a lie.
3.47.18b-19a தஸ்ய ப்ராதா து த்வைமாத்ரோ
லக்ஷ்மணோ நாம வீர்யவாந் ।
ராமஸ்ய புருஷவ்யாக்ர:
ஸஹாயஸ்ஸமரேऽரிஹா ॥
tasya bhrātā tu dvaimātrō
lakṣmaṇō nāma vīryavān ।
rāmasya puruṣavyāghraḥ
sahāyassamarē'rihā ॥
His step brother by name Lakshmaṇa,
a valiant tiger among men,
is his companion in a fight.
3.47.19b-20a ஸ ப்ராதா லக்ஷ்மணோ நாம
தர்மசாரீ த்ருடவ்ரத: ।
அந்வகச்சத்தநுஷ்பாணி:
ப்ரவ்ரஜந்தம் மயா ஸஹ ॥
sa bhrātā lakṣmaṇō nāma
dharmacārī dṛḍhavrataḥ ।
anvagacchaddanuṣpāṇiḥ
pravrajantaṃ mayā saha ॥
That brother whose name is Lakshmaṇa and
who adheres to Dharma and is resolute in his purpose,
followed him, bow in hand,
into exile, along with me.
3.47.20b-21a ஜடீ தாபஸரூபேண
மயா ஸஹ ஸஹாநுஜ: ।
ப்ரவிஷ்டோ தண்டகாரண்யம்
தர்மநித்யோ ஜிதேந்த்ரிய: ॥
jaṭī tāpasarūpēṇa
mayā saha sahānujaḥ ।
praviṣṭō daṇḍakāraṇyam
dharmanityō jitēndriyaḥ ॥
He who always keeps to Dharma
and has mastered his senses,
came to Daṇḍaka Araṇya
wearing matted locks and
adopting the form of a Tapasvi,
along with me and his brother.
3.47.21b-22a தே வயம் ப்ரச்யுதா ராஜ்யாத்
கைகேய்யாஸ்து க்ருதே த்ரய: ।
விசராமோ த்விஜஸ்ரேஷ்ட
வநம் கம்பீரமோஜஸா ॥
tē vayaṃ pracyutā rājyāt
kaikēyyāstu kṛtē trayaḥ ।
vicarāmō dvijaṡrēṣṭha
vanaṃ gambhīramōjasā ॥
O great Brāhmaṇa!
Thus, because of Kaikēyee,
castoff from the kingdom,
we three are biding our time in this deep Vana,
relying on our own abilities.
3.47.22b-23 ஸமாஸ்வஸ முஹூர்தம் து
ஸக்யம் வஸ்துமிஹ த்வயா ।
ஆகமிஷ்யதி மே பர்தா
வந்யமாதாய புஷ்கலம் ।
ருரூந்கோதா ந்வராஹாம்ஸ்ச
ஹத்வாऽதாயாऽமிஷாந்பஹூந் ॥
samāṡvasa muhūrtaṃ tu
ṡakyaṃ vastumiha tvayā ।
āgamiṣyati mē bhartā
vanyamādāya puṣkalam ।
rurūngōdhā nvarāhāṃṡca
hatvā'dāyā'miṣānbahūn ॥
Take rest for a moment; you should stay here.
My husband will come,
bringing with him a variety of
wild meats from his kill such as that of
black striped deer, mongoose and boar.
3.47.24 ஸ த்வம் நாம ச கோத்ரஞ்ச
குலம் சாசக்ஷ்வ தத்த்வத: ।
ஏகஸ்ச தண்டகாரண்யே
கிமர்தம் சரஸி த்விஜ ॥
sa tvaṃ nāma ca gōtrañca
kulaṃ cācakṣva tattvataḥ ।
ēkaṡca daṇḍakāraṇyē
kimarthaṃ carasi dvija ॥
O Brāhmaṇa! What is your name?
And what is your Kula and Gōtra?
Why are you in Daṇḍaka Araṇya, all by yourself? Now a days we use the word Kula synonymous with caste. It actually means lineage.
3.47.25 ஏவம் ப்ருவந்த்யாம் ஸீதாயாம்
ராமபத்ந்யாம் மஹாபல: ।
ப்ரத்யுவாசோத்தரம் தீவ்ரம்
ராவணோ ராக்ஷஸாதிப: ॥

kaikēyīmakutōbhayaḥ ।
cakāra tadvacastasyā
mama bhartā dṛḍhavrataḥ ॥
Rāma, my husband who is not afraid of anything
and is faithful to his creed,
said ‘Yes’ and did in accordance with her word.
3.47.17b-18a தத்யாந்ந ப்ரதிக்ருஹ்ணீயாத்
ஸத்யம் ப்ரூயாந்ந சாந்ருதம் ।
ஏதத்ப்ராஹ்மண ராமஸ்ய
த்ர்ருவம் வ்ரதமநுத்தமம் ॥
dadyānna pratigṛhṇīyāt
satyaṃ brūyānna cānṛtam ।
ētadbrāhmaṇa rāmasya
dhrṛvaṃ vratamanuttamam ॥
O Brāhmaṇa, Rāma, at all costs,
follows his lofty creed of
being at the giving, but not the receiving end,
and speaking the truth and not a lie.
3.47.18b-19a தஸ்ய ப்ராதா து த்வைமாத்ரோ
லக்ஷ்மணோ நாம வீர்யவாந் ।
ராமஸ்ய புருஷவ்யாக்ர:
ஸஹாயஸ்ஸமரேऽரிஹா ॥
tasya bhrātā tu dvaimātrō
lakṣmaṇō nāma vīryavān ।
rāmasya puruṣavyāghraḥ
sahāyassamarē'rihā ॥
His step brother by name Lakshmaṇa,
a valiant tiger among men,
is his companion in a fight.
3.47.19b-20a ஸ ப்ராதா லக்ஷ்மணோ நாம
தர்மசாரீ த்ருடவ்ரத: ।
அந்வகச்சத்தநுஷ்பாணி:
ப்ரவ்ரஜந்தம் மயா ஸஹ ॥
sa bhrātā lakṣmaṇō nāma
dharmacārī dṛḍhavrataḥ ।
anvagacchaddanuṣpāṇiḥ
pravrajantaṃ mayā saha ॥
That brother whose name is Lakshmaṇa and
who adheres to Dharma and is resolute in his purpose,
followed him, bow in hand,
into exile, along with me.
3.47.20b-21a ஜடீ தாபஸரூபேண
மயா ஸஹ ஸஹாநுஜ: ।
ப்ரவிஷ்டோ தண்டகாரண்யம்
தர்மநித்யோ ஜிதேந்த்ரிய: ॥
jaṭī tāpasarūpēṇa
mayā saha sahānujaḥ ।
praviṣṭō daṇḍakāraṇyam
dharmanityō jitēndriyaḥ ॥
He who always keeps to Dharma
and has mastered his senses,
came to Daṇḍaka Araṇya
wearing matted locks and
adopting the form of a Tapasvi,
along with me and his brother.
3.47.21b-22a தே வயம் ப்ரச்யுதா ராஜ்யாத்
கைகேய்யாஸ்து க்ருதே த்ரய: ।
விசராமோ த்விஜஸ்ரேஷ்ட
வநம் கம்பீரமோஜஸா ॥
tē vayaṃ pracyutā rājyāt
kaikēyyāstu kṛtē trayaḥ ।
vicarāmō dvijaṡrēṣṭha
vanaṃ gambhīramōjasā ॥
O great Brāhmaṇa!
Thus, because of Kaikēyee,
castoff from the kingdom,
we three are biding our time in this deep Vana,
relying on our own abilities.
3.47.22b-23 ஸமாஸ்வஸ முஹூர்தம் து
ஸக்யம் வஸ்துமிஹ த்வயா ।
ஆகமிஷ்யதி மே பர்தா
வந்யமாதாய புஷ்கலம் ।
ருரூந்கோதா ந்வராஹாம்ஸ்ச
ஹத்வாऽதாயாऽமிஷாந்பஹூந் ॥
samāṡvasa muhūrtaṃ tu
ṡakyaṃ vastumiha tvayā ।
āgamiṣyati mē bhartā
vanyamādāya puṣkalam ।
rurūngōdhā nvarāhāṃṡca
hatvā'dāyā'miṣānbahūn ॥
Take rest for a moment; you should stay here.
My husband will come,
bringing with him a variety of
wild meats from his kill such as that of
black striped deer, mongoose and boar.
3.47.24 ஸ த்வம் நாம ச கோத்ரஞ்ச
குலம் சாசக்ஷ்வ தத்த்வத: ।
ஏகஸ்ச தண்டகாரண்யே
கிமர்தம் சரஸி த்விஜ ॥
sa tvaṃ nāma ca gōtrañca
kulaṃ cācakṣva tattvataḥ ।
ēkaṡca daṇḍakāraṇyē
kimarthaṃ carasi dvija ॥
O Brāhmaṇa! What is your name?
And what is your Kula and Gōtra?
Why are you in Daṇḍaka Araṇya, all by yourself? Now a days we use the word Kula synonymous with caste. It actually means lineage.
3.47.25 ஏவம் ப்ருவந்த்யாம் ஸீதாயாம்
ராமபத்ந்யாம் மஹாபல: ।
ப்ரத்யுவாசோத்தரம் தீவ்ரம்
ராவணோ ராக்ஷஸாதிப: ॥
ēvaṃ bṛvantyāṃ sītāyām
rāmapatnyāṃ mahābalaḥ ।
pratyuvācōttaraṃ tīvram
rāvaṇō rākṣasādhipaḥ ॥
To Seetā, wife of Rāma, who asked thus,
Rāvaṇa, the mighty strong lord of Rākshasas
replied in a blunt tone:
