3.45.19b-20a ராக்ஷஸா விவிதா வாசோ
விஸ்ருஜந்தி மஹாவநே ।
ஹிம்ஸாவிஹாரா வைதேஹி
ந சிந்தயிதுமர்ஹஸி ॥
rākṣasā vividhā vācō
visṛjanti mahāvanē ।
hiṃsāvihārā vaidēhi
na cintayitumarhasi ॥
Rākshasas, who roam around causing menace,
let off all kinds of sounds in this wide Vana.
O Vaidēhi! You shall not be worried by them.
3.45.20b-21a லக்ஷ்மணேநைவமுக்தா ஸா
க்ருத்தா ஸம்ரக்தலோசநா ।
அப்ரவீத்பருஷம் வாக்யம்
லக்ஷ்மணம் ஸத்யவாதிநம் ॥
lakṣmaṇēnaivamuktā sā
kruddhā saṃraktalōcanā ।
abravītparuṣaṃ vākyam
lakṣmaṇaṃ satyavādinam ॥
Hearing those words of Lakshmaṇa,
she became angry and her eyes turned red.
She responded harshly to Lakshmaṇa,
who was speaking nothing but the truth. Under extreme circumstances, everyone is liable to misunderstand even those whom they trust most.
3.45.21b-22a அநார்யாகரணாரம்ப
ந்ருஸம்ஸ குலபாம்ஸந ।
அஹம் தவ ப்ரியம் மந்யே
ராமஸ்ய வ்யஸநம் மஹத் ॥
anāryākaraṇārambha
nṛṡaṃsa kulapāṃsana ।
ahaṃ tava priyaṃ manyē
rāmasya vyasanaṃ mahat ॥
O cruel one, you are a disgrace to your race!
You are bent upon doing what should not be done!
I can only think that you rejoice in Rāma’s tribulation.
3.45.22b-23 ராமஸ்ய வ்யஸநம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா
தேநைதாநி ப்ரபாஷஸே ।
நைதச்சித்ரம் ஸபத்நேஷு
பாபம் லக்ஷ்மண யத்பவேத் ।
த்வத்விதேஷு ந்ருஸம்ஸேஷு
நித்யம் ப்ரச்சந்நசாரிஷு ॥
rāmasya vyasanaṃ dṛṣṭvā
tēnaitāni prabhāṣasē ।
naitaccitraṃ sapatnēṣu
pāpaṃ lakṣmaṇa yadbhavēt ।
tvadvidhēṣu nṛṡaṃsēṣu
nityaṃ pracchannacāriṣu ॥
You see Rāma in trouble; and speak like this?
There is no surprise that
a cruel enemy like you
who moves about in disguise,
harbors such evil (thought)!
3.45.24 ஸுதுஷ்டஸ்த்வம் வநே ராமம்
ஏகமேகோऽநுகச்சஸி ।
மம ஹேதோ: ப்ரதிச்சந்ந:
ப்ரயுக்தோபரதேந வா ॥
suduṣṭastvaṃ vanē rāmam
ēkamēkō'nugacchasi ।
mama hētōḥ praticchannaḥ
prayuktōbharatēna vā ॥
You are so evil that
you followed Rāma one on one to the Vana,
while secretly coveting me,
or at the instigation of Bharata. Seetā, in her concern and worry, goes overboard with her words, to drive Lakshmaṇa to the rescue of Rāma.
3.45.25-26a தந்ந ஸித்யதி ஸௌமித்ரே
தவ வா பரதஸ்ய வா ।
கதமிந்தீவரஸ்யாமம்
பத்மபத்ரநிபேக்ஷணம் ।
உபஸம்ஸ்ரித்ய பர்தாரம்
காமயேயம் ப்ருதக்ஜநம் ॥
tanna sidhyati saumitrē
tava vā bharatasya vā ।
kathamindīvaraṡyāmam
padmapatranibhēkṣaṇam ।
upasaṃṡritya bhartāram
kāmayēyaṃ pṛthagjanam ॥
That is not going to happen, O Sowmitri,
whether it is coming from you or Bharata!
How could I, having had the love of
the dark-lily-complexioned
and lotus-petal-eyed husband
wish for other men?
3.45.26b-27a ஸமக்ஷம் தவ ஸௌமித்ரே
ப்ராணாம்ஸ்த்யக்ஷே ந ஸம்ஸய: ।
ராமம் விநா க்ஷணமபி
ந ஹி ஜீவாமி பூதலே ॥
samakṣaṃ tava saumitrē
prāṇāṃstyakṣē na saṃṡayaḥ ।
rāmaṃ vinā kṣaṇamapi
na hi jīvāmi bhūtalē ॥
O Sowmitri, I am going to give up my life
right in front of you.
I would not live on the surface of the earth
even for a moment, without Rāma!
3.45.27b-28a இத்யுக்த: பருஷம் வாக்யம்
ஸீதயா ரோமஹர்ஷணம் ।
அப்ரவீல்லக்ஷ்மணஸ்ஸீதாம்
ப்ராஞ்ஜலிர்விஜிதேந்த்ரிய: ॥
ityuktaḥ paruṣaṃ vākyam
sītayā rōmaharṣaṇam ।
abravīllakṣmaṇassītām
prāñjalirvijitēndriyaḥ ॥
Hearing those harsh words of Seetā
that would make one’s hair stand on its end,
Lakshmaṇa, master of his senses,
said to her, palms joined in reverence:
3.45.28b-29 உத்தரம் நோத்ஸஹே வக்தும்
தைவதம் பவதீ மம ।
வாக்யமப்ரதிரூபம் து
ந சித்ரம் ஸ்த்ரீஷு மைதிலி ।
ஸ்வபாவஸ்த்வேஷ நாரீணாம்
ஏவம் லோகேஷு த்ருஸ்யதே ॥
uttaraṃ nōtsahē vaktum
daivataṃ bhavatī mama ।
vākyamapratirūpaṃ tu
na citraṃ strīṣu maithili ।
svabhāvastvēṣa nārīṇām
ēvaṃ lōkēṣu dṛṡyatē ॥
I do not feel like retorting to you,
for you are like a goddess to me.
O Maithili! Words unparalleled like these
are not a surprise from a woman,
for such is the nature of women
as is seen throughout the world.
3.45.30-31a விமுக்ததர்மாஸ்சபலா:
தீக்ஷ்ணா பேதகரா: ஸ்த்ரிய: ।
ந ஸஹே ஹீத்ருஸம் வாக்யம்
வைதேஹி ஜநகாத்மஜே ।
ஸ்ரோத்ரயோருபயோர்மேத்ய
தப்தநாராசஸந்நிபம் ॥
vimuktadharmāṡcapalāḥ
tīkṣṇā bhēdakarāḥ striyaḥ ।
na sahē hīdṛṡaṃ vākyam
vaidēhi janakātmajē ।
ṡrōtrayōrubhayōrmēdya
taptanārācasannibham ॥
Women who forgo Dharma are whimsical, sharp-tongued
and are the cause of rupture (in relationships).
O Vaidēhi, O daughter of Janaka,
I cannot bear words like these,
which hit my two ears now,
like flaming hot Nārāca arrows.
3.45.31b-32a உபஸ்ருண்வந்து மே ஸர்வே
ஸாக்ஷிபூதா வநேசரா: ।
ந்யாயவாதீ யதாந்யாயம்
உக்தோऽஹம் பருஷம் த்வயா ॥
upaṡṛṇvantu mē sarvē
sākṣibhūtā vanēcarāḥ ।
nyāyavādī yathānyāyam
uktō'haṃ paruṣaṃ tvayā ॥
May all creatures of the Vana bear witness that
I, who said what was proper and just,
was repaid with such unjust and harsh words.
3.45.32b-33a திக்த்வாமத்ய ப்ரணஸ்ய த்வம்
யந்மாமேவம் விஸங்கஸே ।
ஸ்த்ரீத்வாத்துஷ்ட ஸ்வபாவேந
குருவாக்யே வ்யவஸ்திதம் ॥
dhiktvāmadya praṇaṡya tvam
yanmāmēvaṃ viṡaṅkasē ।
strītvādduṣṭa svabhāvēna
guruvākyē vyavasthitam ॥
Dhik, may you perish this very day,
for making an allegation like this on me,
who is simply following the
instructions of the elder brother,
being vile, like any other woman!
3.45.33b-34a கமிஷ்யே யத்ர காகுத்ஸ்த
ஸ்வஸ்தி தேऽஸ்து வராநநே ।
ரக்ஷந்து த்வாம் விஸாலாக்ஷி
ஸமக்ரா வநதேவதா: ॥
gamiṣyē yatra kākutstha
svasti tē'stu varānanē ।
rakṣantu tvāṃ viṡālākṣi
samagrā vanadēvatāḥ ॥
I will go to where Kākutstha is.
May all bode well for you,
O you of best countenance!
May all the Dēvatas of the Vana
protect you, O you of wide eyes!
3.45.34b-35 நிமித்தாநி ச கோராணி
யாநி ப்ராதுர்பவந்தி மே ।
அபி த்வாம் ஸஹ ராமேண
பஸ்யேயம் புநராகத: ।
ந வேத்யேதந்ந ஜாநாமி
வைதேஹி ஜநகாத்மஜே ॥
nimittāni ca ghōrāṇi
yāni prādurbhavanti mē ।
api tvāṃ saha rāmēṇa
paṡyēyaṃ punarāgataḥ ।
na vētyētanna jānāmi
vaidēhi janakātmajē ॥
O Vaidēhi, O daughter of Janaka!
I feel such baleful omens stemming within me,
that I do not know whether I will
see you together with Rāma upon my return.
3.45.36 லக்ஷ்மணேநைவமுக்தா ஸா
ருதந்தீ ஜநகாத்மஜா ।
ப்ரத்யுவாச ததோ வாக்யம்
தீவ்ரம் பாஷ்பபரிப்லுதா ॥
lakṣmaṇēnaivamuktā sā
rudantī janakātmajā ।
pratyuvāca tatō vākyam
tīvraṃ bāṣpapariplutā ॥
Spoken to thus by Lakshmaṇa,
she, the daughter of Janaka,
responded sharply,
crying and drenched in tears:
3.45.37 கோதாவரீம் ப்ரவேக்ஷ்யாமி
விநா ராமேண லக்ஷ்மண ।
ஆபந்திஷ்யேऽதவா த்யக்ஷ்யே
விஷமே தேஹமாத்மந: ॥
gōdāvarīṃ pravēkṣyāmi
vinā rāmēṇa lakṣmaṇa ।
ābandhiṣyē'thavā tyakṣyē
viṣamē dēhamātmanaḥ ॥
O Lakshmaṇa, bereft of Rāma
I shall throw myself into Gōdāvarī ,
or hang myself or jump from heights
and give up my life.
3.45.38 பிபாம்யஹம் விஷம் தீக்ஷ்ணம்
ப்ரவேக்ஷ்யாமி ஹுதாஸநம் ।
ந த்வஹம் ராகவாதந்யம்
பதாபி புருஷம் ஸ்ப்ருஸே ॥
pibāmyahaṃ viṣaṃ tīkṣṇam
pravēkṣyāmi hutāṡanam ।
na tvahaṃ rāghavādanyam
padāpi puruṣaṃ spṛṡē ॥
I will drink virulent poison,
or consign myself to fire,
but would not touch any other man
than Rāghava, even with my foot.
3.45.39 இதி லக்ஷ்மணமாக்ருஸ்ய
ஸீதா து:கஸமந்விதா ।
பாணிப்யாம் ருததீ து:காத்
உதரம் ப்ரஜகாந ஹ ॥
iti lakṣmaṇamākruṡya
sītā duḥkhasamanvitā ।
pāṇibhyāṃ rudatī duḥkhāt
udaraṃ prajaghāna ha ॥
Abusing Lakshmaṇa thus,
Seetā, taken over by anguish,
beat her belly with her hands
and cried out in anguish.
3.45.40 தாமார்தரூபாம் விமநா ருதந்தீம்
ஸௌமித்ரிராலோக்ய விஸாலநேத்ராம் ।
ஆஸ்வாஸயாமாஸ ந சைவ பர்து
ஸ்தம் ப்ராதரம்கிஞ்சிதுவாச ஸீதா ॥
tāmārtarūpāṃ vimanā rudantīṃ
saumitrirālōkya viṡālanētrām ।
āṡvāsayāmāsa na caiva bhartu
staṃ bhrātaraṃkiñciduvāca sītā ॥
Seeing the wide-eyed one
crying, losing her mind and
looking like an embodiment of distress,
Sowmitri tried to console her.
But Seetā would not utter even
a single word to her husband’s brother.
3.45.41 ததஸ்து ஸீதாமபிவாத்ய லக்ஷ்மண: ।
க்ருதாஞ்ஜலி: கிஞ்சிதபிப்ரணம்ய ச ।
அந்வீக்ஷமாணோ பஹுஸஸ்ச மைதிலீம் ।
ஜகாம ராமஸ்ய ஸமீபமாத்மவாந் ॥
tatastu sītāmabhivādya lakṣmaṇaḥ ।
kṛtāñjaliḥ kiñcidabhipraṇamya ca ।
anvīkṣamāṇō bahuṡaṡca maithilīm ।
jagāma rāmasya samīpamātmavān ॥
Then Lakshmaṇa, a man of conscience,
left to reach where Rāma was,
after paying obeisance, taking a
slight bow with palms joined in reverence
and looking back at Maithili many times.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே பஞ்ஜசத்வாரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
araṇyakāṇḍē pañjacatvāriṃṡassargaḥ ॥

3.45.38 பிபாம்யஹம் விஷம் தீக்ஷ்ணம்
ப்ரவேக்ஷ்யாமி ஹுதாஸநம் ।
ந த்வஹம் ராகவாதந்யம்
பதாபி புருஷம் ஸ்ப்ருஸே ॥
pibāmyahaṃ viṣaṃ tīkṣṇam
pravēkṣyāmi hutāṡanam ।
na tvahaṃ rāghavādanyam
padāpi puruṣaṃ spṛṡē ॥
I will drink virulent poison,
or consign myself to fire,
but would not touch any other man
than Rāghava, even with my foot.
3.45.39 இதி லக்ஷ்மணமாக்ருஸ்ய
ஸீதா து:கஸமந்விதா ।
பாணிப்யாம் ருததீ து:காத்
உதரம் ப்ரஜகாந ஹ ॥
iti lakṣmaṇamākruṡya
sītā duḥkhasamanvitā ।
pāṇibhyāṃ rudatī duḥkhāt
udaraṃ prajaghāna ha ॥
Abusing Lakshmaṇa thus,
Seetā, taken over by anguish,
beat her belly with her hands
and cried out in anguish.
3.45.40 தாமார்தரூபாம் விமநா ருதந்தீம்
ஸௌமித்ரிராலோக்ய விஸாலநேத்ராம் ।
ஆஸ்வாஸயாமாஸ ந சைவ பர்து
ஸ்தம் ப்ராதரம்கிஞ்சிதுவாச ஸீதா ॥
tāmārtarūpāṃ vimanā rudantīṃ
saumitrirālōkya viṡālanētrām ।
āṡvāsayāmāsa na caiva bhartu
staṃ bhrātaraṃkiñciduvāca sītā ॥
Seeing the wide-eyed one
crying, losing her mind and
looking like an embodiment of distress,
Sowmitri tried to console her.
But Seetā would not utter even
a single word to her husband’s brother.
3.45.41 ததஸ்து ஸீதாமபிவாத்ய லக்ஷ்மண: ।
க்ருதாஞ்ஜலி: கிஞ்சிதபிப்ரணம்ய ச ।
அந்வீக்ஷமாணோ பஹுஸஸ்ச மைதிலீம் ।
ஜகாம ராமஸ்ய ஸமீபமாத்மவாந் ॥
tatastu sītāmabhivādya lakṣmaṇaḥ ।
kṛtāñjaliḥ kiñcidabhipraṇamya ca ।
anvīkṣamāṇō bahuṡaṡca maithilīm ।
jagāma rāmasya samīpamātmavān ॥
Then Lakshmaṇa, a man of conscience,
left to reach where Rāma was,
after paying obeisance, taking a
slight bow with palms joined in reverence
and looking back at Maithili many times.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே பஞ்ஜசத்வாரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
araṇyakāṇḍē pañjacatvāriṃṡassargaḥ ॥
