Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 42
Māreeca goes along with Rāvaṇa after showing all the reluctance he can, resigned to the fate of being killed by Rāma. Rāvaṇa feels very happy and both of them head towards Daṇḍaka.
After reaching Daṇḍaka, prodded again by Rāvaṇa, Māreeca takes the form of an enchanting deer, whose limbs, body, face, sides and tail are an eyeful, with the shine of every gem and hue of every mineral.
The deer then darts by the woods around Rāma’s Āṡrama hoping to get noticed by Seetā. Seetā comes out to pluck flowers after some time and becomes wonderstruck seeing the deer which seems to have been made of every gem on earth.
3.42.1 ஏவமுக்த்வா து வசநம்
மாரீசோ ராவணம் தத: ।
கச்சாவேத்யப்ரவீத்தீநோ
பயாத்ராத்ரிம்சரப்ரபோ: ॥
ēvamuktvā tu vacanam
mārīcō rāvaṇaṃ tataḥ ।
gacchāvētyabravīddīnō
bhayādrātriṃcaraprabhōḥ ॥
After saying those words to Rāvaṇa,
Māreeca, scared of the lord of the night-rovers,
said in extreme dejection: ‘Let us go!’
3.42.2 த்ருஷ்டஸ்சாஹம் புநஸ்தேந
ஸரசாபாஸிதாரிணா ।
மத்வதோத்யதஸஸ்த்ரேऽண
விநஷ்டம் ஜீவிதம் ச மே ॥
dṛṣṭaṡcāhaṃ punastēna
ṡaracāpāsidhāriṇā ।
madvadhōdyataṡastrē'ṇa
vinaṣṭaṃ jīvitaṃ ca mē ॥
I am seen, again, by that
wielder of arrows, bow and sword.
My life is coming to an end
with him lifting the weapon to kill me.
3.42.3 ந ஹி ராமம் பராக்ரம்ய
ஜீவந்ப்ரதிநிவர்ததே ।
வர்ததே ப்ரதிரூபோऽஸௌ
யமதண்டஹதஸ்ய தே ॥
na hi rāmaṃ parākramya
jīvanpratinivartatē ।
vartatē pratirūpō'sau
yamadaṇḍahatasya tē ॥
No one will return alive, after attacking Rama.
What you see moving in front of you is just my image;
I am killed by the rod of Yama already.
3.42.4 கிம் நு ஸக்யம் மயா கர்தும்
ஏவம் த்வயி துராத்மநி ।
ஏஷ கச்சாம்யஹம் தாத
ஸ்வஸ்தி தேऽஸ்து நிஸாசர ॥
kiṃ nu ṡakyaṃ mayā kartum
ēvaṃ tvayi durātmani ।
ēṣa gacchāmyahaṃ tāta
svasti tē'stu niṡācara ॥
What can I do with you
who are so possessed by evil?
So let me move along, my dear.
May all bode well for you, O night-rover!
3.42.5 ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டஸ்த்வபவத்தேந
வசநேந ஸ ராவண: ।
பரிஷ்வஜ்ய ஸுஸம்ஸ்லிஷ்டம்
இதம் வசநமப்ரவீத் ॥
prahṛṣṭastvabhavattēna
vacanēna sa rāvaṇaḥ ।
pariṣvajya susaṃṡliṣṭam
idaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥
Rāvaṇa, feeling very happy
to hear those words,
took him into his tight embrace
and said these words:
3.42.6 ஏதச்சௌண்டீர்யயுக்தம் தே
மச்சந்தவஸவர்திந: ।
இதாநீமஸி மாரீச:
பூர்வமந்யோ நிஸாசர: ॥
ētacchauṇḍīryayuktaṃ tē
macchandavaṡavartinaḥ ।
idānīmasi mārīcaḥ
pūrvamanyō niṡācaraḥ ॥
Now, you are the true Māreeca
who complies with my intentions,
and displaying your true valor;
though you behaved like a stranger
for a moment, O night-rover!
3.42.7 ஆருஹ்யதாமயம் ஸீக்ரம்
ரதோ ரத்நவிபூஷித: ।
மயா ஸஹ ததா யுக்த:
பிஸாசவதநை: கரை: ॥
āruhyatāmayaṃ ṡīghram
rathō ratnavibhūṣitaḥ ।
mayā saha tathā yuktaḥ
piṡācavadanaiḥ kharaiḥ ॥
Get on to the gem-studded chariot that is
yoked with ghoul-faced mules, along with me!
3.42.8 ப்ரலோபயித்வா வைதேஹீம்
யதேஷ்டம் கந்துமர்ஹஸி ।
தாம் ஸூந்யே ப்ரஸபம் ஸீதாம்
ஆநயிஷ்யாமி மைதிலீம் ॥
pralōbhayitvā vaidēhīm
yathēṣṭaṃ gantumarhasi ।
tāṃ ṡūnyē prasabhaṃ sītām
ānayiṣyāmi maithilīm ॥
After luring Vaidēhi,
you can go where you wish.
I will forcefully carry away Maithili
once the place is desolate.
3.42.9 ததோ ராவணமாரீசௌ
விமாநமிவ தம் ரதம் ।
ஆருஹ்ய யயதுஸ்ஸீக்ரம்
தஸ்மாதாஸ்ரமமண்டலாத் ॥
tatō rāvaṇamārīcau
vimānamiva taṃ ratham ।
āruhya yayatuṡṡīghram
tasmādāṡramamaṇḍalāt ॥
Then, the duo of Rāvaṇa and Māreeca
departed from that Āṡrama area quickly
getting on the chariot
which flew like an aerial car.
3.42.10 ததைவ தத்ர பஸ்யந்தௌ
பத்தநாநி வநாநி ச ।
கிரீம்ஸ்ச ஸரிதஸ்ஸர்வா
ராஷ்ட்ராணி நகராணி ச ॥
tathaiva tatra paṡyantau
pattanāni vanāni ca ।
girīṃṡca saritassarvā
rāṣṭrāṇi nagarāṇi ca ॥
On the way they saw many a
town, Vana, mountain, stream, province and city.
3.42.11 ஸமேத்ய தண்டகாரண்யம்
ராகவஸ்யாஸ்ரமம் தத: ।
ததர்ஸ ஸஹ மாரீசோ
ராவணோ ராக்ஷஸாதிப: ॥
samētya daṇḍakāraṇyam
rāghavasyāṡramaṃ tataḥ ।
dadarṡa saha mārīcō
rāvaṇō rākṣasādhipaḥ ॥
Reaching Daṇḍaka Araṇya along with Māreeca,
Rāvaṇa, the lord of Rākshasas saw the Āṡrama of Rāma.
3.42.12 அவதீர்ய ரதாத்தஸ்மாத்
தத: காஞ்சநபூஷணாத் ।
ஹஸ்தே க்ருஹீத்வா மாரீசம்
ராவணோ வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ॥
avatīrya rathāttasmāt
tataḥ kāñcanabhūṣaṇāt ।
hastē gṛhītvā mārīcam
rāvaṇō vākyamabravīt ॥
Getting off the chariot
that was decorated with gold
Rāvaṇa took Māreeca by hand
and said these words:
3.42.13 ஏதத்ததாஸ்ரமபதம்
த்ருஸ்யதே கதலீவ்ருதம் ।
க்ரியதாம் தத்ஸகே ஸீக்ரம்
யதர்தம் வயமாகதா: ॥
ētattadāṡramapadam
dṛṡyatē kadalīvṛtam ।
kriyatāṃ tatsakhē ṡīghram
yadarthaṃ vayamāgatāḥ ॥
The Āṡrama grounds, nestled amidst
plantain groves can be seen now.
My friend, you shall quickly do
what we have come here for.
3.42.14 ஸ ராவணவசஸ்ஸ்ருத்வா
மாரீசோ ராக்ஷஸஸ்ததா ।
ம்ருகோ பூத்வாऽஸ்ரமத்வாரி
ராமஸ்ய விசசார ஹ ॥
sa rāvaṇavacaṡṡrutvā
mārīcō rākṣasastadā ।
mṛgō bhūtvā'ṡramadvāri
rāmasya vicacāra ha ॥
Hearing those words of Rāvaṇa,
Māreeca the Rākshasa took the form of a deer
and started to move about
in front of the entrance of Rāma’s Āṡrama.
3.42.15 ஸ து தத்ரூபமாஸ்தாய
மஹதத்புததர்ஸநம் ।
மணிப்ரவரஸ்ருங்காக்ர:
ஸிதாஸிதமுகாக்ருதி: ॥
sa tu tadrūpamāsthāya
mahadadbhutadarṡanam ।
maṇipravaraṡṛṅgāgraḥ
sitāsitamukhākṛtiḥ ॥
He adopted a magnificent and marvelous appearance
with exquisite gems on the tips of the horns
and luminous black and white spots on the face.
3.42.16 ரக்தபத்மோத்பலமுக
இந்த்ரநீலோத்பலஸ்ரவா: ।
கிம்சிதப்யுந்நதக்ரீவ
இம்த்ரநீலதலாதர: ॥
raktapadmōtpalamukha
indranīlōtpalaṡravāḥ ।
kiṃcidabhyunnatagrīva
iṃdranīladalādharaḥ ॥
Its face was shining,
one side like red lotus
and the other like dark lily.
Its ears were like the petals of the blue lily.
Its neck was slightly stretched and uplifted.
And its lower lip was shining like sapphire.
3.42.17-18a குந்தேந்துவஜ்ரஸங்காஸம்
உதரம் சாஸ்ய பாஸ்வரம் ।
மதூகநிபபார்ஸ்வஸ்ச
பத்மகிஞ்ஜல்கஸந்நிப: ।
வைடூர்யஸங்காஸகுர:
தநுஜங்கஸ்ஸுஸம்ஹத: ॥
kundēnduvajrasaṅkāṡam
udaraṃ cāsya bhāsvaram ।
madhūkanibhapārṡvaṡca
padmakiñjalkasannibhaḥ ।
vaiḍūryasaṅkāṡakhuraḥ
tanujaṅghassusaṃhataḥ ॥
Its belly was shining with the sheen of
Kunda flower, moon and diamond.
Its flanks rivaled the Madhūka flower.
The rest of its body resembled the
filaments of the lotus in hue.
Its hooves were like lazulite.
Its waist was tenuous and shapely.
3.42.18b-19a இந்த்ராயுதஸவர்ணேந
புச்சேநோர்த்வம் விராஜதா ।
மநோஹரஸ்ஸ்நிக்தவர்ணோ
ரத்நைர்நாநாவிதைர்வ்ருத: ॥
indrāyudhasavarṇēna
pucchēnōrdhvaṃ virājatā ।
manōharassnigdhavarṇō
ratnairnānāvidhairvṛtaḥ ॥
Its tail was lit up with
the shine of Indra’s weapon.
It was captivating with its silky sheen all over.
Its body was speckled with spots
that resembled every kind of gem.
3.42.19a-20b க்ஷணேந ராக்ஷஸோ ஜாதோ
ம்ருக: பரமஸோபந: ।
வநம் ப்ரஜ்வலயந்ரம்யம்
ராமாஸ்ரமபதம் ச தத் ॥
kṣaṇēna rākṣasō jātō
mṛgaḥ paramaṡōbhanaḥ ।
vanaṃ prajvalayanramyam
rāmāṡramapadaṃ ca tat ॥
The Rākshasa turned himself into
an extremely beautiful deer instantly
lighting up the Vana and
Rāma’s Āṡrama grounds.
