Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 39
Having already recounted how he was flung into the ocean by Rāma, a mere lad, Māreeca in this Sarga continues to recount another brush he had with Rāma in the Daṇḍaka Araṇya.
Māreeca tells how he, taking Rāma to a mellowed down Tapasvi living in the Vana, tried to attack him, taking the form of a wild, cruel beast with sharp horns. Mareeca tells how he managed to escape the arrows of Rāma somehow, which took the lives of his two accomplices.
Māreeca tells how he gave it all up and started living the life of Tapasvi, having nightmares and visions of Rāma, even at the slightest hint of his name. Mareeca tells Rāvaṇa that he wants to have no part in it, if Rāvaṇa chooses to fight Rāma. Māreeca tries to impress upon Rāvaṇa, as best as he can, that Rāma will bring an end to the clan of Rākshasas if Rāvaṇa goes ahead with his plan.
3.39.1 ஏவமஸ்மி ததா முக்த:
கதஞ்சித்தேந ஸம்யுகே ।
இதாநீமபி யத்வ்ருத்தம்
தச்ச்ருணுஷ்வ நிருத்தரம் ॥
ēvamasmi tadā muktaḥ
kathañcittēna saṃyugē ।
idānīmapi yadvṛttaṃ
tacchṛṇuṣva niruttaram ॥
Thus, I was somehow spared by him
at that time in that brush.
But listen to what happened later, recently:
3.39.2 ராக்ஷஸாப்யாமஹம் த்வாப்யாம்
அநிர்விண்ணஸ்ததா க்ருத: ।
ஸஹிதோ ம்ருகரூபாப்யாம்
ப்ரவிஷ்டோ தண்டகாவநம் ॥
rākṣasābhyāmahaṃ dvābhyām
anirviṇṇastathā kṛtaḥ ।
sahitō mṛgarūpābhyāṃ
praviṣṭō daṇḍakāvanam ॥
Not being put off by what happened,
I entered Daṇḍaka Vana
along with two other Rākshasas,
who had taken the form of beasts.
3.39.3 தீப்தஜிஹ்வோ மஹாகாய:
தீக்ஷ்ணதம்ஷ்ட்ரோ மஹாபல: ।
வ்யசரம் தண்டகாரண்யம்
மாம்ஸபக்ஷோ மஹாம்ருக: ॥
dīptajihvō mahākāyaḥ
tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭrō mahābalaḥ ।
vyacaraṃ daṇḍakāraṇyaṃ
māṃsabhakṣō mahāmṛgaḥ ॥
I roamed in the Daṇḍaka Araṇya
taking the form of a gigantic beast
with a huge body, a flaming tongue
and sharp fangs, feeding on flesh.
3.39.4 அக்நிஹோத்ரேஷு தீர்தேஷு
சைத்யவ்ருக்ஷேஷு ராவண ।
அத்யந்தகோரோ வ்யசரம்
தாபஸாந்ஸம்ப்ரதர்ஷயந் ॥
agnihōtrēṣu tīrthēṣu
caityavṛkṣēṣu rāvaṇa ।
atyantaghōrō vyacaraṃ
tāpasānsampradharṣayan ॥
I went, O Rāvaṇa, around the sacred fires,
holy places, shrines and sacred trees
in that terrible form, creating
terror among the Tapasvis.
3.39.5-7 நிஹத்ய தண்டகாரண்யே
தாபஸாந்தர்மசாரிண: ।
ருதிராணி பிபம்ஸ்தேஷாம்
ததா மாம்ஸாநி பக்ஷயந் ।
ருஷிமாம்ஸாஸந: க்ரூர:
த்ராஸயந்வநகோசராந் ।
ததா ருதிரமத்தோऽஹம்
விசரந்தர்மதூஷக: ।
ஆஸாதயம் ததா ராமம்
தாபஸம் தர்மசாரிணம் ।
வைதேஹீம் ச மஹாபாகாம்
லக்ஷ்மணம் ச மஹாரதம் ॥
nihatya daṇḍakāraṇyē
tāpasāndharmacāriṇaḥ ।
rudhirāṇi pibaṃstēṣāṃ
tathā māṃsāni bhakṣayan ।
ṛṣimāṃsāṡanaḥ krūraḥ
trāsayanvanagōcarān ।
tathā rudhiramattō'haṃ
vicarandharmadūṣakaḥ ।
āsādayaṃ tadā rāmaṃ
tāpasaṃ dharmacāriṇam ।
vaidēhīṃ ca mahābhāgāṃ
lakṣmaṇaṃ ca mahāratham ॥
In that Daṇḍaka Araṇya,
killing the Tapasvis who follow Dharma,
drinking their blood and eating their flesh,
feeding on flesh of the Ṛshis,
being cruel and frightening the dwellers of Vana,
going around bashing Dharma
intoxicated by (drinking) the blood,
I approached Rāma, the Tapasvi, the follower of Dharma,
and the blessed Vaidēhi and the
great charioter Lakshmaṇa.
3.39.8-10a தாபஸம் நியதாஹாரம்
ஸர்வபூதஹிதே ரதம் ।
ஸோऽஹம் வநகதம் ராமம்
பரிபூய மஹாபலம் ।
தாபஸோऽயமிதி ஜ்ஞாத்வா
பூர்வவைரமநுஸ்மரந் ।
அப்யதாவம் ஹி ஸம்க்ருத்த:
தீக்ஷ்ண ஸ்ருங்கோ ம்ருகாக்ருதி: ।
ஜிகாம்ஸுரக்ருதப்ரஜ்ஞ:
தம் ப்ரஹாரமநுஸ்மரந் ॥
tāpasaṃ niyatāhāraṃ
sarvabhūtahitē ratam ।
sō'haṃ vanagataṃ rāmaṃ
paribhūya mahābalam ।
tāpasō'yamiti jñātvā
pūrvavairamanusmaran ।
abhyadhāvaṃ hi saṃkruddhaḥ
tīkṣṇa ṡṛṅgō mṛgākṛtiḥ ।
jighāṃsurakṛtaprajñaḥ
taṃ prahāramanusmaran ॥
Having not learned my lesson,
I took Rāma to be a mere Tapasvi
living in the Vana practicing austerities,
subsisting on limited food and
engaged in the well being of every creature.
Disregarding his immense strength and
remembering only the past enmity and the blow,
I, in the form of the beast with sharp horns,
dashed unto him to kill, in a rage!
3.39.10b-11a தேந முக்தாஸ்த்ரயோ பாணா:
ஸிதாஸ்ஸத்ருநிபர்ஹணா: ।
விக்ருஷ்ய பலவச்சாபம்
ஸுபர்ணாநிலநிஸ்ஸ்வநா: ॥
tēna muktāstrayō bāṇāḥ
ṡitāṡṡatrunibarhaṇāḥ ।
vikṛṣya balavaccāpaṃ
suparṇānilanissvanāḥ ॥
Then, three sharp arrows
released by Rāma as he drew the
string of his bow with all his strength,
which would take the life of any enemy,
whizzed past like Garuda in flight.
3.39.11b-12a தே பாணா வஜ்ரஸங்காஸா:
ஸுமுக்தா ரக்தபோஜநா: ।
ஆஜக்முஸ்ஸஹிதாஸ்ஸர்வே
த்ரயஸ்ஸந்நதபர்வண: ॥
tē bāṇā vajrasaṅkāṡāḥ
sumuktā raktabhōjanāḥ ।
ājagmussahitāssarvē
trayassannataparvaṇaḥ ॥
All those sure-shot arrows
that were twisted at their joints,
came straight together like thunderbolts
seeking blood for their food.
3.39.12b-13a பராக்ரமஜ்ஞோ ராமஸ்ய
ஸடோ த்ருஷ்டபய: புரா ।
ஸமுத்பாந்தஸ்ததோமுக்த:
தாவுபௌ ராக்ஷஸௌ ஹதௌ ॥
parākramajñō rāmasya
ṡaṭhō dṛṣṭabhayaḥ purā ।
samudbhāntastatōmuktaḥ
tāvubhau rākṣasau hatau ॥
Knowing the prowess of Rāma,
and having tasted the fear once,
I escaped that arrow using all my
trickery and by swaying hither and thither;
But the other two Rākshasas were killed.
3.39.13b-14a ஸரேண முக்தோ ராமஸ்ய
கதஞ்சித்ப்ராப்ய ஜீவிதம் ।
இஹ ப்ரவ்ராஜிதோ யுக்த:
தாபஸோऽஹம் ஸமாஹித: ॥
ṡarēṇa muktō rāmasya
kathañcitprāpya jīvitam ।
iha pravrājitō yuktaḥ
tāpasō'haṃ samāhitaḥ ॥
Escaping the arrow of Rāma somehow and left to live,
I gave up all of it, taking to Yōga and devoted to Tapa.
3.39.14b-15a வ்ருக்ஷே வ்ருக்ஷே ச பஸ்யாமி
சீரக்ருஷ்ணாஜிநாம்பரம் ।
க்ருஹீததநுஷம் ராமம்
பாஸஹஸ்தமிவாந்தகம் ॥
vṛkṣē vṛkṣē ca paṡyāmi
cīrakṛṣṇājināmbaram ।
gṛhītadhanuṣaṃ rāmaṃ
pāṡahastamivāntakam ॥
In every tree I seem to see Rāma
clad in robes of bark and deer skin
and armed with the bow, like the
god of Death with noose in his hand.
3.39.15b-16a அபி ராமஸஹஸ்ராணி
பீத: பஸ்யாமி ராவண ।
ராமபூதமிதம் ஸர்வம்
அரண்யம் ப்ரதிபாதி மே ॥
api rāmasahasrāṇi
bhītaḥ paṡyāmi rāvaṇa ।
rāmabhūtamidaṃ sarvam
araṇyaṃ pratibhāti mē ॥
I see in fact thousands of Rāmas,
O Rāvaṇa, in my delirious fear!
All this wilderness seems to me
to have turned into Rāma.
3.39.16b-17a ராமமேவ ஹி பஸ்யாமி
ரஹிதே ராக்ஷஸாதிப ।
த்ருஷ்ட்வா ஸ்வப்நகதம் ராமம்
உத்ப்ரமாமி விசேதந: ॥
rāmamēva hi paṡyāmi
rahitē rākṣasādhipa ।
dṛṣṭvā svapnagataṃ rāmam
udbhramāmi vicētanaḥ ॥
O Lord of Rākshasas! I see
Rāma where there is no one.
With the nightmares of Rāma
I reel and fall senseless.
3.39.17b-18a ரகாராதீநி நாமாநி
ராமத்ரஸ்தஸ்ய ராவண ।
ரத்நாநி ச ரதாஸ்சைவ
த்ராஸம் ஸம்ஜநயந்தி மே ॥
rakārādīni nāmāni
rāmatrastasya rāvaṇa ।
ratnāni ca rathāṡcaiva
trāsaṃ saṃjanayanti mē ॥
O Rāvaṇa, I get scared just by hearing
any name that starts with the sound of ‘Ra’.
Even the words Ratna (gemstone)
and Ratha (chariot) create fear in me.
3.39.18b-19a அஹம் தஸ்ய ப்ரபாவஜ்ஞோ
ந யுத்தம் தேந தே க்ஷமம் ।
பலிம் வா நமுசிம் வாபி
ஹந்யாத்தி ரகுநந்தந: ॥
ahaṃ tasya prabhāvajñō
na yuddhaṃ tēna tē kṣamam ।
baliṃ vā namuciṃ vāpi
hanyāddhi raghunandanaḥ ॥
I know his strength.
War with him is not right for you.
Rāma can kill even Bali or Namuci.
3.39.19b-20a ரணே ராமேண யுத்த்ஸ்வ
க்ஷமாம் வா குரு ராவண ।
ந தே ராம கதா கார்யா
யதி மாம் த்ரஷ்டுமிச்சஸி ॥
raṇē rāmēṇa yuddhsva
kṣamām vā kuru rāvaṇa ।
na tē rāma kathā kāryā
yadi māṃ draṣṭumicchasi ॥
You may fight with Rāma
in battle or keep your peace;
but never again speak of Rama to me,
if you want to see me.
3.39.20b-21a பஹவஸ்ஸாதவோ லோகே
யுக்தா தர்மமநுஷ்டிதா: ।
பரேஷாமபராதேந
விநஷ்டாஸ்ஸபரிச்சதா: ॥
bahavassādhavō lōkē
yuktā dharmamanuṣṭhitāḥ ।
parēṣāmaparādhēna
vinaṣṭhāssaparicchadāḥ ॥
Many a good man who followed Dharma and Yōga
has perished along with his kith and kin,
because of the offences of someone else.
3.39.21b-22a ஸோऽऽஹம் தவாபராதேந
விநஸ்யேயம் நிஸாசர ।
குரு யத்தே க்ஷமம் தத்த்வம்
அஹம் த்வா நாநுயாமி ஹ ॥
sō''haṃ tavāparādhēna
vinaṡyēyaṃ niṡācara ।
kuru yattē kṣamaṃ tattvam
ahaṃ tvā nānuyāmi ha ॥
Similarly I might perish
because of your mistake, O night-rover!
Do whatever is right for you,
but I am not going to be with you.
3.39.22b-23a ராமஸ்ச ஹி மஹாதேஜா
மஹாஸத்த்வோ மஹாபல: ।
அபி ராக்ஷஸலோகஸ்ய
ந பவேதந்தகோऽபி ஸ: ॥
rāmaṡca hi mahātējā
mahāsattvō mahābalaḥ ।
api rākṣasalōkasya
na bhavēdantakō'pi saḥ ॥
For Rāma is a man of immense prowess,
immense grit and immense strength.
I hope he does not prove to be the
god of Death for the clan of Rākshasas.
3.39.23b-24 யதி ஸூர்பணகாஹேதோ:
ஜநஸ்தாநகத: கர: ।
அதிவ்ருத்தோ ஹத: பூர்வம்
ராமேணாக்லிஷ்டகர்மணா ।
அத்ர ப்ரூஹி யதாதத்த்வம்
கோ ராமஸ்ய வ்யதிக்ரம: ॥
yadi ṡūrpaṇakhāhētōḥ
janasthānagataḥ kharaḥ ।
ativṛttō hataḥ pūrvaṃ
rāmēṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā ।
atra brūhi yathātattvaṃ
kō rāmasya vyatikramaḥ ॥
Janasthāna-bound Khara crossed the line
with Rāma who does things effortlessly,
for the sake of Ṡūrpaṇakhā, and was slain.
Then, tell me honestly,
what exactly was Rāma’s transgression?
3.39.25 இதம் வசோ பந்துஹிதார்திநா மயா
யதோச்யமாநம் யதி நாபிபத்ஸ்யஸே ।
ஸபாந்தவஸ்த்யக்ஷ்யஸி ஜீவிதம் ரணே
ஹதோऽத்ய ராமேண ஸரைரஜிஹ்மகை: ॥
idaṃ vacō bandhuhitārthinā mayā
yathōcyamānaṃ yadi nābhipatsyasē ।
sabāndhavastyakṣyasi jīvitaṃ raṇē
hatō'dya rāmēṇa ṡarairajihmagaiḥ ॥
If you do not take this advice,
given by me in earnest with
the welfare of the kith and kin in mind,
you shall, along with your kith and kin,
forfeit your life in battle
slaughtered by the arrows of Rāma
that know no wobble.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே ஏகோநசத்வாரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ।
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
araṇyakāṇḍē ēkōnacatvāriṃṡassargaḥ ।

3.39.14b-15a வ்ருக்ஷே வ்ருக்ஷே ச பஸ்யாமி
சீரக்ருஷ்ணாஜிநாம்பரம் ।
க்ருஹீததநுஷம் ராமம்
பாஸஹஸ்தமிவாந்தகம் ॥
vṛkṣē vṛkṣē ca paṡyāmi
cīrakṛṣṇājināmbaram ।
gṛhītadhanuṣaṃ rāmaṃ
pāṡahastamivāntakam ॥
In every tree I seem to see Rāma
clad in robes of bark and deer skin
and armed with the bow, like the
god of Death with noose in his hand.
3.39.15b-16a அபி ராமஸஹஸ்ராணி
பீத: பஸ்யாமி ராவண ।
ராமபூதமிதம் ஸர்வம்
அரண்யம் ப்ரதிபாதி மே ॥
api rāmasahasrāṇi
bhītaḥ paṡyāmi rāvaṇa ।
rāmabhūtamidaṃ sarvam
araṇyaṃ pratibhāti mē ॥
I see in fact thousands of Rāmas,
O Rāvaṇa, in my delirious fear!
All this wilderness seems to me
to have turned into Rāma.
3.39.16b-17a ராமமேவ ஹி பஸ்யாமி
ரஹிதே ராக்ஷஸாதிப ।
த்ருஷ்ட்வா ஸ்வப்நகதம் ராமம்
உத்ப்ரமாமி விசேதந: ॥
rāmamēva hi paṡyāmi
rahitē rākṣasādhipa ।
dṛṣṭvā svapnagataṃ rāmam
udbhramāmi vicētanaḥ ॥
O Lord of Rākshasas! I see
Rāma where there is no one.
With the nightmares of Rāma
I reel and fall senseless.
3.39.17b-18a ரகாராதீநி நாமாநி
ராமத்ரஸ்தஸ்ய ராவண ।
ரத்நாநி ச ரதாஸ்சைவ
த்ராஸம் ஸம்ஜநயந்தி மே ॥
rakārādīni nāmāni
rāmatrastasya rāvaṇa ।
ratnāni ca rathāṡcaiva
trāsaṃ saṃjanayanti mē ॥
O Rāvaṇa, I get scared just by hearing
any name that starts with the sound of ‘Ra’.
Even the words Ratna (gemstone)
and Ratha (chariot) create fear in me.
3.39.18b-19a அஹம் தஸ்ய ப்ரபாவஜ்ஞோ
ந யுத்தம் தேந தே க்ஷமம் ।
பலிம் வா நமுசிம் வாபி
ஹந்யாத்தி ரகுநந்தந: ॥
ahaṃ tasya prabhāvajñō
na yuddhaṃ tēna tē kṣamam ।
baliṃ vā namuciṃ vāpi
hanyāddhi raghunandanaḥ ॥
I know his strength.
War with him is not right for you.
Rāma can kill even Bali or Namuci.
3.39.19b-20a ரணே ராமேண யுத்த்ஸ்வ
க்ஷமாம் வா குரு ராவண ।
ந தே ராம கதா கார்யா
யதி மாம் த்ரஷ்டுமிச்சஸி ॥
raṇē rāmēṇa yuddhsva
kṣamām vā kuru rāvaṇa ।
na tē rāma kathā kāryā
yadi māṃ draṣṭumicchasi ॥
You may fight with Rāma
in battle or keep your peace;
but never again speak of Rama to me,
if you want to see me.
3.39.20b-21a பஹவஸ்ஸாதவோ லோகே
யுக்தா தர்மமநுஷ்டிதா: ।
பரேஷாமபராதேந
விநஷ்டாஸ்ஸபரிச்சதா: ॥
bahavassādhavō lōkē
yuktā dharmamanuṣṭhitāḥ ।
parēṣāmaparādhēna
vinaṣṭhāssaparicchadāḥ ॥
Many a good man who followed Dharma and Yōga
has perished along with his kith and kin,
because of the offences of someone else.
3.39.21b-22a ஸோऽऽஹம் தவாபராதேந
விநஸ்யேயம் நிஸாசர ।
குரு யத்தே க்ஷமம் தத்த்வம்
அஹம் த்வா நாநுயாமி ஹ ॥
sō''haṃ tavāparādhēna
vinaṡyēyaṃ niṡācara ।
kuru yattē kṣamaṃ tattvam
ahaṃ tvā nānuyāmi ha ॥
Similarly I might perish
because of your mistake, O night-rover!
Do whatever is right for you,
but I am not going to be with you.
3.39.22b-23a ராமஸ்ச ஹி மஹாதேஜா
மஹாஸத்த்வோ மஹாபல: ।
அபி ராக்ஷஸலோகஸ்ய
ந பவேதந்தகோऽபி ஸ: ॥
rāmaṡca hi mahātējā
mahāsattvō mahābalaḥ ।
api rākṣasalōkasya
na bhavēdantakō'pi saḥ ॥
For Rāma is a man of immense prowess,
immense grit and immense strength.
I hope he does not prove to be the
god of Death for the clan of Rākshasas.
3.39.23b-24 யதி ஸூர்பணகாஹேதோ:
ஜநஸ்தாநகத: கர: ।
அதிவ்ருத்தோ ஹத: பூர்வம்
ராமேணாக்லிஷ்டகர்மணா ।
அத்ர ப்ரூஹி யதாதத்த்வம்
கோ ராமஸ்ய வ்யதிக்ரம: ॥
yadi ṡūrpaṇakhāhētōḥ
janasthānagataḥ kharaḥ ।
ativṛttō hataḥ pūrvaṃ
rāmēṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā ।
atra brūhi yathātattvaṃ
kō rāmasya vyatikramaḥ ॥
Janasthāna-bound Khara crossed the line
with Rāma who does things effortlessly,
for the sake of Ṡūrpaṇakhā, and was slain.
Then, tell me honestly,
what exactly was Rāma’s transgression?
3.39.25 இதம் வசோ பந்துஹிதார்திநா மயா
யதோச்யமாநம் யதி நாபிபத்ஸ்யஸே ।
ஸபாந்தவஸ்த்யக்ஷ்யஸி ஜீவிதம் ரணே
ஹதோऽத்ய ராமேண ஸரைரஜிஹ்மகை: ॥
idaṃ vacō bandhuhitārthinā mayā
yathōcyamānaṃ yadi nābhipatsyasē ।
sabāndhavastyakṣyasi jīvitaṃ raṇē
hatō'dya rāmēṇa ṡarairajihmagaiḥ ॥
If you do not take this advice,
given by me in earnest with
the welfare of the kith and kin in mind,
you shall, along with your kith and kin,
forfeit your life in battle
slaughtered by the arrows of Rāma
that know no wobble.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே ஏகோநசத்வாரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ।
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
araṇyakāṇḍē ēkōnacatvāriṃṡassargaḥ ।

in Araṇya Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
