Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 38
In this Sarga Māreeca continues to dissuade Rāvaṇa. He tells Rāvaṇa how Viṡwāmitra requested Daṡaratha to send Rāma for the protection of the Yajña and how he was flung into the ocean a hundred Yōjanas away by the arrows of Rāma.
Māreeca, without mincing words, warns Rāvaṇa of the dire consequences of earning Rāma’s displeasure. Māreeca tells that the entire Laṅkā would burn to ashes and all the Rākshasas would be slaughtered and he will see himself in the abode of Death, if he were to abduct Seetā. Mareeca suggests to Rāvaṇa that he should rather keep himself to the wives he already has.
3.38.1-3a கதாசிதப்யஹம் வீர்யாத்
பர்யடந்ப்ருதிவீமிமாம் ।
பலம் நாகஸஹஸ்ரஸ்ய
தாரயந்பர்வதோபம: ।
நீலஜீமூதஸங்காஸ:
தப்தகாஞ்சநகுண்டல: ।
பயம் லோகஸ்ய ஜநயந்
கிரீடீ பரிகாயுத: ।
வ்யசரம் தண்டகாரண்யே
ருஷிமாம்ஸாநி பக்ஷயந் ॥
kadācidapyahaṃ vīryāt
paryaṭanpṛthivīmimām ।
balaṃ nāgasahasrasya
dhārayanparvatōpamaḥ ।
nīlajīmūtasaṅkāṡaḥ
taptakāñcanakuṇḍalaḥ ।
bhayaṃ lōkasya janayan
kirīṭī parighāyudhaḥ ।
vyacaraṃ daṇḍakāraṇyē
ṛṣimāṃsāni bhakṣayan ॥
Once upon a time,
I used to roam around this earth
with all my might,
brandishing my strength
equal to that of a thousand elephants,
with a mountain-like body
that rivals a black cloud,
wearing a crown and ear pendants
of gold purified in fire,
terrifying the world
wielding a Parigha for a weapon.
I used to go to Daṇḍaka Araṇya
and eat the flesh of the Ṛshis.
3.38.3b-4a விஸ்வாமித்ரோऽத தர்மாத்மா
மத்வித்ரஸ்தோ மஹாமுநி: ।
ஸ்வயம் கத்வா தஸரதம்
நரேந்த்ரமிதமப்ரவீத் ॥
viṡvāmitrō'tha dharmātmā
madvitrastō mahāmuniḥ ।
svayaṃ gatvā daṡarathaṃ
narēndramidamabravīt ॥
Then, Viṡwāmitra, the great Muni and Dharmātma,
fearing me, went to the king Daṡaratha
in person and said these words:
3.38.4b-5a அத்ய ரக்ஷது மாம் ராம:
பர்வகாலே ஸமாஹித: ।
மாரீசாந்மே பயம் கோரம்
ஸமுத்பந்நம் நரேஸ்வர ॥
adya rakṣatu māṃ rāmaḥ
parvakālē samāhitaḥ ।
mārīcānmē bhayaṃ ghōraṃ
samutpannaṃ narēṡvara ॥
O lord of people! I am gripped
with terrible fear of Māreeca!
Please do allow Rāma come to my protection
with all his attention, at the time of Yajña!
3.38.5b-6a இத்யேவமுக்தோ தர்மாத்மா
ராஜா தஸரதஸ்ததா ।
ப்ரத்யுவாச மஹாபாகம்
விஸ்வாமித்ரம் மஹாமுநிம் ॥
ityēvamuktō dharmātmā
rājā daṡarathastadā ।
pratyuvāca mahābhāgaṃ
viṡvāmitraṃ mahāmunim ॥
Thus requested, king Daṡaratha then responded
to the great blessed Muni Viṡwāmitra:
3.38.6b-7a பாலோ த்வாதஸவர்ஷோऽயம்
அக்ருதாஸ்த்ரஸ்ச ராகவ: ।
காமம் து மம யத்ஸைந்யம்
மயா ஸஹ கமிஷ்யதி ॥
bālō dvādaṡavarṣō'yam
akṛtāstraṡca rāghavaḥ ।
kāmaṃ tu mama yatsainyaṃ
mayā saha gamiṣyati ॥
Rāghava is a child and is barely twelve years old.
He is not even trained in archery.
But I shall certainly come along with my army.
3.38.7b-8a பலேந சதுரங்கேண
ஸ்வயமேத்ய நிஸாசராந் ।
வதிஷ்யாமி முநிஸ்ரேஷ்ட
ஸத்ரூம்ஸ்தே மநஸேப்ஸிதாந் ॥
balēna caturaṅgēṇa
svayamētya niṡācarān ।
vadhiṣyāmi muniṡrēṣṭha
ṡatrūṃstē manasēpsitān ॥
O distinguished Muni! I would like to
come in person, with all four divisions of the army
to slay your enemies, the night-rovers!
3.38.8b-9a இத்யேவமுக்தஸ்ஸமுநீ
ராஜாநமிதமப்ரவீத் ।
ராமாந்நாந்யத்பலம் லோகே
பர்யாப்தம் தஸ்ய ரக்ஷஸ: ॥
ityēvamuktassamunī
rājānamidamabravīt ।
rāmānnānyadbalaṃ lōkē
paryāptaṃ tasya rakṣasaḥ ॥
Thus told, that Muni responded to the king:
‘No power other than Rāma’s will suffice
to stand against that of that Rākshasa!’
3.38.9b-10a தேவதாநாமபி பவாந்
ஸமரேஷ்வபிபாலக: ।
ஆஸீத்தவ க்ருதம் கர்ம
த்ரிலோகே விதிதம் ந்ருப ॥
dēvatānāmapi bhavān
samarēṣvabhipālakaḥ ।
āsīttava kṛtaṃ karma
trilōkē viditaṃ nṛpa ॥
You did provide protection even
in the war waged by the Dēvas!
And what you did then is
well known in all the three worlds!
3.38.10b-11 காமமஸ்து மஹத்ஸைந்யம்
திஷ்டத்விஹ பரந்தப ।
பாலோऽப்யேஷ மஹாதேஜா:
ஸமர்தஸ்தஸ்ய நிக்ரஹே ।
கமிஷ்யே ராமமாதாய
ஸ்வஸ்தி தேऽஸ்து பரந்தப ॥
kāmamastu mahatsainyaṃ
tiṣṭhatviha parantapa ।
bālō'pyēṣa mahātējāḥ
samarthastasya nigrahē ।
gamiṣyē rāmamādāya
svasti tē'stu parantapa ॥
O scorcher of foes!
Yes, Surely it is a huge army!
But let it stay here.
Even though he is young,
he is of immense strength and
is capable of restraining him (Mareeca).
I shall go, taking Rāma with me,
may all bode well for you! Māreeca presents here an abridged version of the story, obviously. He spares the detail of Daṡaratha’s disinclination to send Rāma and the persuasion to do so by Vasishṭha.
3.38.12 ஏவமுக்த்வா து ஸ முநி
தமாதாய ந்ருபாத்மஜம் ।
ஜகாம பரமப்ரீதோ
விஸ்வாமித்ரஸ்ஸ்வமாஸ்ரமம் ॥
ēvamuktvā tu sa muni
tamādāya nṛpātmajam ।
jagāma paramaprītō
viṡvāmitrassvamāṡramam ॥
Saying thus, Viṡwāmitra, the Muni,
returned to his Āṡrama happily,
taking the prince with him.
3.38.13 தம் ததா தண்டகாரண்யே
யஜ்ஞமுத்திஸ்ய தீக்ஷிதம் ।
பபூவோபஸ்திதோ ராம:
சித்ரம் விஷ்பாரயந்தநு: ॥
taṃ tadā daṇḍakāraṇyē
yajñamuddiṡya dīkṣitam ।
babhūvōpasthitō rāmaḥ
citraṃ viṣphārayandhanuḥ ॥
Then, as he took the vows of Yajña
in the Daṇḍaka Araṇya,
Rāma stood by him, twanging the bow.
3.38.15 அஜாதவ்யஞ்ஜநஸ்ரீமாந்
பத்மபத்ரநிபேக்ஷண: ।
ஏகவஸ்த்ரதரோ தந்வீ
ஸிகீ கநகமாலயா ॥
ஸோபயந் தண்டகாரண்யம்
தீப்தேந ஸ்வேந தேஜஸா ।
அத்ருஸ்யத ததோ ராமோ
பாலசந்த்ர இவோதித: ॥
ajātavyañjanaṡrīmān
padmapatranibhēkṣaṇaḥ ।
ēkavastradharō dhanvī
ṡikhī kanakamālayā ॥
ṡōbhayan daṇḍakāraṇyaṃ
dīptēna svēna tējasā ।
adṛṡyata tatō rāmō
bālacandra ivōditaḥ ॥
With the signs of manhood not yet visible on him,
Rāma looked like the rising young moon.
The blessed one, holding the bow,
with eyes like lotus petals,
adorned with gold necklace,
hair coiled on the head,
clad in a single piece of cloth,
made that Daṇḍaka Araṇya
glow with his innate radiance.
3.38.16 ததோऽஹம் மேகஸங்காஸ:
தப்தகாஞ்சநகுண்டல: ।
பலீ தத்தவரோதர்பாத்
ஆஜகாம ததாஸ்ரமம் ॥
tatō'haṃ mēghasaṅkāṡaḥ
taptakāñcanakuṇḍalaḥ ।
balī dattavarōdarpāt
ājagāma tadāṡramam ॥
Then, I went to that Āṡrama,
wearing ear-pendants
of gold purified by fire,
looking like a cloud and
haughty with my strength and
the boons that I had obtained.
3.38.17 தேந த்ருஷ்ட: ப்ரவிஷ்டோऽஹம்
ஸஹஸைவோத்யதாயுத: ।
மாம் து த்ருஷ்ட்வா தநுஸ்ஸஜ்யம்
அஸம்ப்ராந்தஸ்சகார ஸ: ॥
tēna dṛṣṭaḥ praviṣṭō'haṃ
sahasaivōdyatāyudhaḥ ।
māṃ tu dṛṣṭvā dhanussajyam
asambhrāntaṡcakāra saḥ ॥
He saw me as soon as I entered holding up my weapon.
Unperturbed upon seeing me,
he simply went on to string his bow.
3.38.18 அவஜாநந்நஹம் மோஹாத்
பாலோऽயமிதி ராகவம் ।
விஸ்வாமித்ரஸ்ய தாம் வேதிம்
அப்யதாவம் க்ருதத்வர: ॥
avajānannahaṃ mōhāt
bālō'yamiti rāghavam ।
viṡvāmitrasya tāṃ vēdim
abhyadhāvaṃ kṛtatvaraḥ ॥
Taking Rāghava to be a mere lad and
disregarding him in my folly,
I hurried and dashed towards
the Vēdi of Viṡwāmitra.
3.38.19 தேந முக்தஸ்ததோ பாண:
ஸிதஸ்ஸத்ருநிபர்ஹண: ।
தேநாஹம் த்வாஹத: க்ஷிப்த:
ஸமுத்ரே ஸதயோஜநே ॥
tēna muktastatō bāṇaḥ
ṡitaṡṡatrunibarhaṇaḥ ।
tēnāhaṃ tvāhataḥ kṣiptaḥ
samudrē ṡatayōjanē ॥
Thereupon, struck by the sharp arrow that
he, the slayer of enemies, released,
I was flung afar into the sea
which was a hundred Yōjanas away.
3.38.20 நேச்சதா தாத மாம் ஹந்தும்
ததா வீரேண ரக்ஷித: ।
ராமஸ்ய ஸரவேகேந
நிரஸ்தோऽஹமசேதந: ॥
nēcchatā tāta māṃ hantuṃ
tadā vīrēṇa rakṣitaḥ ।
rāmasya ṡaravēgēna
nirastō'hamacētanaḥ ॥
My dear! I was thus spared, because
he, the Veera, did not want to kill me.
I was only tossed senseless,
by the speed of Rāma’s arrow.
3.38.21 பாதிதோऽஹம் ததா தேந
கம்பீரே ஸாகராம்பஸி ।
ப்ராப்ய ஸம்ஜ்ஞாம் சிராத்தாத
லங்காம் ப்ரதிகத: புரீம் ॥
pātitō'haṃ tadā tēna
gambhīrē sāgarāmbhasi ।
prāpya saṃjñāṃ cirāttāta
laṅkāṃ pratigataḥ purīm ॥
My dear! I was thus thrown
into the depths of the ocean by him.
Regaining senses after a long time,
I then reached the city of Laṅkā.
3.38.22 ஏவமஸ்மி ததா முக்த:
ஸஹாயாஸ்து நிபாதிதா: ।
அக்ருதாஸ்த்ரேண பாலேந
ராமேணாக்லிஷ்டகர்மணா ॥
ēvamasmi tadā muktaḥ
sahāyāstu nipātitāḥ ।
akṛtāstrēṇa bālēna
rāmēṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā ॥
I was thus spared by Rāma,
who accomplishes things with utmost ease.
My accomplices, however, were killed
by that lad who was barely trained in archery.
3.38.23 தந்மயா வார்யமாணஸ்த்வம்
யதி ராமேண விக்ரஹம் ।
கரிஷ்யஸ்யாபதம் கோராம்
க்ஷிப்ரம் ப்ராப்ஸ்யஸி ராவண ॥
tanmayā vāryamāṇastvaṃ
yadi rāmēṇa vigraham ।
kariṣyasyāpadaṃ ghōrāṃ
kṣipraṃ prāpsyasi rāvaṇa ॥
Hence, if you were to antagonize him
disregarding my warning, O Rāvaṇa,
you will find yourself in great trouble in no time.
3.38.24 க்ரீடாரதிவிதிஜ்ஞாநாம்
ஸமாஜோத்ஸவஸாலிநாம் ।
ரக்ஷஸாம் சைவ ஸந்தாபம்
அநர்தம் சாஹரிஷ்யஸி ॥
krīḍāratividhijñānāṃ
samājōtsavaṡālinām ।
rakṣasāṃ caiva santāpam
anarthaṃ cāhariṣyasi ॥
You will only bring suffering
and ruin to the Rākshasas,
who otherwise revel in parties and functions,
and enjoy sports and the art of love making!
3.38.25 ஹர்ம்யப்ராஸாதஸம்பாதாம்
நாநாரத்நவிபூஷிதாம் ।
த்ரக்ஷ்யஸி த்வம் புரீம் லங்காம்
விநஷ்டாம் மைதிலீக்ருதே ॥
harmyaprāsādasambādhāṃ
nānāratnavibhūṣitām ।
drakṣyasi tvaṃ purīṃ laṅkāṃ
vinaṣṭāṃ maithilīkṛtē ॥
You will see Laṅkā that is full of
palaces and multi-storied buildings and
is adorned with gems of every kind,
destroyed on Maithili’s account.
3.38.26 அகுர்வந்தோऽபி பாபாநி
ஸுசய: பாபஸம்ஸ்ரயாத் ।
பரபாபைர்விநஸ்யந்தி
மத்ஸ்யா நாகஹ்ரதே யதா ॥
akurvantō'pi pāpāni
ṡucayaḥ pāpasaṃṡrayāt ।
parapāpairvinaṡyanti
matsyā nāgahradē yathā ॥
Even those who are pure and
have committed no sin,
will get destroyed for the sins of others,
like fish in a pool that is inhabited by snakes.
3.38.27 திவ்யசந்தநதிக்தாங்காந்
திவ்யாபரணபூஷிதாந் ।
த்ரக்ஷ்யஸ்யபிஹதாந்பூமௌ
தவ தோஷாத்து ராக்ஷஸாந் ॥
divyacandanadigdhāṅgān
divyābharaṇabhūṣitān ।
drakṣyasyabhihatānbhūmau
tava dōṣāttu rākṣasān ॥
You will see the Rākshasas,
whose limbs are smeared with exquisite sandal paste
and are adorned with splendid jewels,
lying slaughtered on the ground
because of your mistake.
3.38.28 ஹ்ருததாராந் ஸதாராம்ஸ்ச
தஸ வித்ரவதோ திஸ: ।
ஹதஸேஷாநஸரணாந்
த்ரக்ஷ்யஸி த்வம் நிஸாசராந் ॥
hṛtadārān sadārāṃṡca
daṡa vidravatō diṡaḥ ।
hataṡēṣānaṡaraṇān
drakṣyasi tvaṃ niṡācarān ॥
You will see the remaining night-rovers fleeing,
along with their wives or
with their wives snatched away (from them),
in all the ten directions, finding no refuge.
3.38.29 ஸரஜாலபரிக்ஷிப்தாம்
அக்நிஜ்வாலாஸமாவ்ருதாம் ।
ப்ரதக்தபவநாம் லங்காம்
த்ரக்ஷ்யஸி த்வம் ந ஸம்ஸய: ॥
ṡarajālaparikṣiptām
agnijvālāsamāvṛtām ।
pradagdhabhavanāṃ laṅkāṃ
drakṣyasi tvaṃ na saṃṡayaḥ ॥
You will, without a doubt,
see Laṅkā drowned in a torrent of arrows,
engulfed in flames and
its buildings burnt down (to the ground). Māreeca lays out the consequences without mincing words.
3.38.30 பரதாராபிமர்ஸாத்து
நாந்யத்பாபதரம் மஹத் ।
ப்ரமதாநாம் ஸஹஸ்ராணி
தவ ராஜந்பரிக்ரஹ: ॥
paradārābhimarṡāttu
nānyatpāpataraṃ mahat ।
pramadānāṃ sahasrāṇi
tava rājanparigrahaḥ ॥
There is no sin more a heinous than
coveting another man’s wife.
Have you not already taken
thousands of women for your wives?
3.38.31 பவ ஸ்வதாரநிரத:
ஸ்வகுலம் ரக்ஷ ராக்ஷஸ ।
மாநம்ருத்திம் ச ராஜ்யம் ச
ஜீவிதம் சேஷ்டமாத்மந: ॥
bhava svadāranirataḥ
svakulaṃ rakṣa rākṣasa ।
mānamṛddhiṃ ca rājyaṃ ca
jīvitaṃ cēṣṭamātmanaḥ ॥
Keep your interest confined to your wives.
Save your kith and kin, O Rākshasa,
and also your repute, wealth, kingdom,
and the life that you love dearly.
3.38.32 கலத்ராணி ச ஸௌம்யாநி
மித்ரவர்கம் ததைவ ச ।
யதீச்சஸி சிரம் போக்தம்
மா க்ருதா ராமவிப்ரியம் ॥
kalatrāṇi ca saumyāni
mitravargaṃ tathaiva ca ।
yadīcchasi ciraṃ bhōktaṃ
mā kṛthā rāmavipriyam ॥
If you wish to enjoy your delicate wives
and also your friends for long,
do not earn the displeasure of Rāma.
3.38.33 நிவார்யமாணஸ்ஸுஹ்ருதா மயா ப்ருஸம்
ப்ரஸஹ்ய ஸீதாம் யதி தர்ஷயிஷ்யஸி ।
கமிஷ்யஸி க்ஷீணபலஸ்ஸபாந்தவோ
யமக்ஷயம் ராமஸராத்தஜீவித: ॥
nivāryamāṇassuhṛdā mayā bhṛṡaṃ
prasahya sītāṃ yadi dharṣayiṣyasi ।
gamiṣyasi kṣīṇabalassabāndhavō
yamakṣayaṃ rāmaṡarāttajīvitaḥ ॥
In spite of being earnestly
dissuaded by me, your good friend,
if you were to abduct Seetā forcibly,
your army will be decimated and
you will go to the abode of Death
along with your kith and kin,
your life taken by Rāma’s arrows!
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே அஷ்டத்ரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ।
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
araṇyakāṇḍē aṣṭatriṃṡassargaḥ ।
Thus concludes the thirty eighth Sarga
in Araṇya Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.

to slay your enemies, the night-rovers!
3.38.8b-9a இத்யேவமுக்தஸ்ஸமுநீ
ராஜாநமிதமப்ரவீத் ।
ராமாந்நாந்யத்பலம் லோகே
பர்யாப்தம் தஸ்ய ரக்ஷஸ: ॥
ityēvamuktassamunī
rājānamidamabravīt ।
rāmānnānyadbalaṃ lōkē
paryāptaṃ tasya rakṣasaḥ ॥
Thus told, that Muni responded to the king:
‘No power other than Rāma’s will suffice
to stand against that of that Rākshasa!’
3.38.9b-10a தேவதாநாமபி பவாந்
ஸமரேஷ்வபிபாலக: ।
ஆஸீத்தவ க்ருதம் கர்ம
த்ரிலோகே விதிதம் ந்ருப ॥
dēvatānāmapi bhavān
samarēṣvabhipālakaḥ ।
āsīttava kṛtaṃ karma
trilōkē viditaṃ nṛpa ॥
You did provide protection even
in the war waged by the Dēvas!
And what you did then is
well known in all the three worlds!
3.38.10b-11 காமமஸ்து மஹத்ஸைந்யம்
திஷ்டத்விஹ பரந்தப ।
பாலோऽப்யேஷ மஹாதேஜா:
ஸமர்தஸ்தஸ்ய நிக்ரஹே ।
கமிஷ்யே ராமமாதாய
ஸ்வஸ்தி தேऽஸ்து பரந்தப ॥
kāmamastu mahatsainyaṃ
tiṣṭhatviha parantapa ।
bālō'pyēṣa mahātējāḥ
samarthastasya nigrahē ।
gamiṣyē rāmamādāya
svasti tē'stu parantapa ॥
O scorcher of foes!
Yes, Surely it is a huge army!
But let it stay here.
Even though he is young,
he is of immense strength and
is capable of restraining him (Mareeca).
I shall go, taking Rāma with me,
may all bode well for you! Māreeca presents here an abridged version of the story, obviously. He spares the detail of Daṡaratha’s disinclination to send Rāma and the persuasion to do so by Vasishṭha.
3.38.12 ஏவமுக்த்வா து ஸ முநி
தமாதாய ந்ருபாத்மஜம் ।
ஜகாம பரமப்ரீதோ
விஸ்வாமித்ரஸ்ஸ்வமாஸ்ரமம் ॥
ēvamuktvā tu sa muni
tamādāya nṛpātmajam ।
jagāma paramaprītō
viṡvāmitrassvamāṡramam ॥
Saying thus, Viṡwāmitra, the Muni,
returned to his Āṡrama happily,
taking the prince with him.
3.38.13 தம் ததா தண்டகாரண்யே
யஜ்ஞமுத்திஸ்ய தீக்ஷிதம் ।
பபூவோபஸ்திதோ ராம:
சித்ரம் விஷ்பாரயந்தநு: ॥
taṃ tadā daṇḍakāraṇyē
yajñamuddiṡya dīkṣitam ।
babhūvōpasthitō rāmaḥ
citraṃ viṣphārayandhanuḥ ॥
Then, as he took the vows of Yajña
in the Daṇḍaka Araṇya,
Rāma stood by him, twanging the bow.
3.38.15 அஜாதவ்யஞ்ஜநஸ்ரீமாந்
பத்மபத்ரநிபேக்ஷண: ।
ஏகவஸ்த்ரதரோ தந்வீ
ஸிகீ கநகமாலயா ॥
ஸோபயந் தண்டகாரண்யம்
தீப்தேந ஸ்வேந தேஜஸா ।
அத்ருஸ்யத ததோ ராமோ
பாலசந்த்ர இவோதித: ॥
ajātavyañjanaṡrīmān
padmapatranibhēkṣaṇaḥ ।
ēkavastradharō dhanvī
ṡikhī kanakamālayā ॥
ṡōbhayan daṇḍakāraṇyaṃ
dīptēna svēna tējasā ।
adṛṡyata tatō rāmō
bālacandra ivōditaḥ ॥
With the signs of manhood not yet visible on him,
Rāma looked like the rising young moon.
The blessed one, holding the bow,
with eyes like lotus petals,
adorned with gold necklace,
hair coiled on the head,
clad in a single piece of cloth,
made that Daṇḍaka Araṇya
glow with his innate radiance.
3.38.16 ததோऽஹம் மேகஸங்காஸ:
தப்தகாஞ்சநகுண்டல: ।
பலீ தத்தவரோதர்பாத்
ஆஜகாம ததாஸ்ரமம் ॥
tatō'haṃ mēghasaṅkāṡaḥ
taptakāñcanakuṇḍalaḥ ।
balī dattavarōdarpāt
ājagāma tadāṡramam ॥
Then, I went to that Āṡrama,
wearing ear-pendants
of gold purified by fire,
looking like a cloud and
haughty with my strength and
the boons that I had obtained.
3.38.17 தேந த்ருஷ்ட: ப்ரவிஷ்டோऽஹம்
ஸஹஸைவோத்யதாயுத: ।
மாம் து த்ருஷ்ட்வா தநுஸ்ஸஜ்யம்
அஸம்ப்ராந்தஸ்சகார ஸ: ॥
tēna dṛṣṭaḥ praviṣṭō'haṃ
sahasaivōdyatāyudhaḥ ।
māṃ tu dṛṣṭvā dhanussajyam
asambhrāntaṡcakāra saḥ ॥
He saw me as soon as I entered holding up my weapon.
Unperturbed upon seeing me,
he simply went on to string his bow.
3.38.18 அவஜாநந்நஹம் மோஹாத்
பாலோऽயமிதி ராகவம் ।
விஸ்வாமித்ரஸ்ய தாம் வேதிம்
அப்யதாவம் க்ருதத்வர: ॥
avajānannahaṃ mōhāt
bālō'yamiti rāghavam ।
viṡvāmitrasya tāṃ vēdim
abhyadhāvaṃ kṛtatvaraḥ ॥
Taking Rāghava to be a mere lad and
disregarding him in my folly,
I hurried and dashed towards
the Vēdi of Viṡwāmitra.
3.38.19 தேந முக்தஸ்ததோ பாண:
ஸிதஸ்ஸத்ருநிபர்ஹண: ।
தேநாஹம் த்வாஹத: க்ஷிப்த:
ஸமுத்ரே ஸதயோஜநே ॥
tēna muktastatō bāṇaḥ
ṡitaṡṡatrunibarhaṇaḥ ।
tēnāhaṃ tvāhataḥ kṣiptaḥ
samudrē ṡatayōjanē ॥
Thereupon, struck by the sharp arrow that
he, the slayer of enemies, released,
I was flung afar into the sea
which was a hundred Yōjanas away.
3.38.20 நேச்சதா தாத மாம் ஹந்தும்
ததா வீரேண ரக்ஷித: ।
ராமஸ்ய ஸரவேகேந
நிரஸ்தோऽஹமசேதந: ॥
nēcchatā tāta māṃ hantuṃ
tadā vīrēṇa rakṣitaḥ ।
rāmasya ṡaravēgēna
nirastō'hamacētanaḥ ॥
My dear! I was thus spared, because
he, the Veera, did not want to kill me.
I was only tossed senseless,
by the speed of Rāma’s arrow.
3.38.21 பாதிதோऽஹம் ததா தேந
கம்பீரே ஸாகராம்பஸி ।
ப்ராப்ய ஸம்ஜ்ஞாம் சிராத்தாத
லங்காம் ப்ரதிகத: புரீம் ॥
pātitō'haṃ tadā tēna
gambhīrē sāgarāmbhasi ।
prāpya saṃjñāṃ cirāttāta
laṅkāṃ pratigataḥ purīm ॥
My dear! I was thus thrown
into the depths of the ocean by him.
Regaining senses after a long time,
I then reached the city of Laṅkā.
3.38.22 ஏவமஸ்மி ததா முக்த:
ஸஹாயாஸ்து நிபாதிதா: ।
அக்ருதாஸ்த்ரேண பாலேந
ராமேணாக்லிஷ்டகர்மணா ॥
ēvamasmi tadā muktaḥ
sahāyāstu nipātitāḥ ।
akṛtāstrēṇa bālēna
rāmēṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā ॥
I was thus spared by Rāma,
who accomplishes things with utmost ease.
My accomplices, however, were killed
by that lad who was barely trained in archery.
3.38.23 தந்மயா வார்யமாணஸ்த்வம்
யதி ராமேண விக்ரஹம் ।
கரிஷ்யஸ்யாபதம் கோராம்
க்ஷிப்ரம் ப்ராப்ஸ்யஸி ராவண ॥
tanmayā vāryamāṇastvaṃ
yadi rāmēṇa vigraham ।
kariṣyasyāpadaṃ ghōrāṃ
kṣipraṃ prāpsyasi rāvaṇa ॥
Hence, if you were to antagonize him
disregarding my warning, O Rāvaṇa,
you will find yourself in great trouble in no time.
3.38.24 க்ரீடாரதிவிதிஜ்ஞாநாம்
ஸமாஜோத்ஸவஸாலிநாம் ।
ரக்ஷஸாம் சைவ ஸந்தாபம்
அநர்தம் சாஹரிஷ்யஸி ॥
krīḍāratividhijñānāṃ
samājōtsavaṡālinām ।
rakṣasāṃ caiva santāpam
anarthaṃ cāhariṣyasi ॥
You will only bring suffering
and ruin to the Rākshasas,
who otherwise revel in parties and functions,
and enjoy sports and the art of love making!
3.38.25 ஹர்ம்யப்ராஸாதஸம்பாதாம்
நாநாரத்நவிபூஷிதாம் ।
த்ரக்ஷ்யஸி த்வம் புரீம் லங்காம்
விநஷ்டாம் மைதிலீக்ருதே ॥
harmyaprāsādasambādhāṃ
nānāratnavibhūṣitām ।
drakṣyasi tvaṃ purīṃ laṅkāṃ
vinaṣṭāṃ maithilīkṛtē ॥
You will see Laṅkā that is full of
palaces and multi-storied buildings and
is adorned with gems of every kind,
destroyed on Maithili’s account.
3.38.26 அகுர்வந்தோऽபி பாபாநி
ஸுசய: பாபஸம்ஸ்ரயாத் ।
பரபாபைர்விநஸ்யந்தி
மத்ஸ்யா நாகஹ்ரதே யதா ॥
akurvantō'pi pāpāni
ṡucayaḥ pāpasaṃṡrayāt ।
parapāpairvinaṡyanti
matsyā nāgahradē yathā ॥
Even those who are pure and
have committed no sin,
will get destroyed for the sins of others,
like fish in a pool that is inhabited by snakes.
3.38.27 திவ்யசந்தநதிக்தாங்காந்
திவ்யாபரணபூஷிதாந் ।
த்ரக்ஷ்யஸ்யபிஹதாந்பூமௌ
தவ தோஷாத்து ராக்ஷஸாந் ॥
divyacandanadigdhāṅgān
divyābharaṇabhūṣitān ।
drakṣyasyabhihatānbhūmau
tava dōṣāttu rākṣasān ॥
You will see the Rākshasas,
whose limbs are smeared with exquisite sandal paste
and are adorned with splendid jewels,
lying slaughtered on the ground
because of your mistake.
3.38.28 ஹ்ருததாராந் ஸதாராம்ஸ்ச
தஸ வித்ரவதோ திஸ: ।
ஹதஸேஷாநஸரணாந்
த்ரக்ஷ்யஸி த்வம் நிஸாசராந் ॥
hṛtadārān sadārāṃṡca
daṡa vidravatō diṡaḥ ।
hataṡēṣānaṡaraṇān
drakṣyasi tvaṃ niṡācarān ॥
You will see the remaining night-rovers fleeing,
along with their wives or
with their wives snatched away (from them),
in all the ten directions, finding no refuge.
3.38.29 ஸரஜாலபரிக்ஷிப்தாம்
அக்நிஜ்வாலாஸமாவ்ருதாம் ।
ப்ரதக்தபவநாம் லங்காம்
த்ரக்ஷ்யஸி த்வம் ந ஸம்ஸய: ॥
ṡarajālaparikṣiptām
agnijvālāsamāvṛtām ।
pradagdhabhavanāṃ laṅkāṃ
drakṣyasi tvaṃ na saṃṡayaḥ ॥
You will, without a doubt,
see Laṅkā drowned in a torrent of arrows,
engulfed in flames and
its buildings burnt down (to the ground). Māreeca lays out the consequences without mincing words.
3.38.30 பரதாராபிமர்ஸாத்து
நாந்யத்பாபதரம் மஹத் ।
ப்ரமதாநாம் ஸஹஸ்ராணி
தவ ராஜந்பரிக்ரஹ: ॥
paradārābhimarṡāttu
nānyatpāpataraṃ mahat ।
pramadānāṃ sahasrāṇi
tava rājanparigrahaḥ ॥
There is no sin more a heinous than
coveting another man’s wife.
Have you not already taken
thousands of women for your wives?
3.38.31 பவ ஸ்வதாரநிரத:
ஸ்வகுலம் ரக்ஷ ராக்ஷஸ ।
மாநம்ருத்திம் ச ராஜ்யம் ச
ஜீவிதம் சேஷ்டமாத்மந: ॥
bhava svadāranirataḥ
svakulaṃ rakṣa rākṣasa ।
mānamṛddhiṃ ca rājyaṃ ca
jīvitaṃ cēṣṭamātmanaḥ ॥
Keep your interest confined to your wives.
Save your kith and kin, O Rākshasa,
and also your repute, wealth, kingdom,
and the life that you love dearly.
3.38.32 கலத்ராணி ச ஸௌம்யாநி
மித்ரவர்கம் ததைவ ச ।
யதீச்சஸி சிரம் போக்தம்
மா க்ருதா ராமவிப்ரியம் ॥
kalatrāṇi ca saumyāni
mitravargaṃ tathaiva ca ।
yadīcchasi ciraṃ bhōktaṃ
mā kṛthā rāmavipriyam ॥
If you wish to enjoy your delicate wives
and also your friends for long,
do not earn the displeasure of Rāma.
3.38.33 நிவார்யமாணஸ்ஸுஹ்ருதா மயா ப்ருஸம்
ப்ரஸஹ்ய ஸீதாம் யதி தர்ஷயிஷ்யஸி ।
கமிஷ்யஸி க்ஷீணபலஸ்ஸபாந்தவோ
யமக்ஷயம் ராமஸராத்தஜீவித: ॥
nivāryamāṇassuhṛdā mayā bhṛṡaṃ
prasahya sītāṃ yadi dharṣayiṣyasi ।
gamiṣyasi kṣīṇabalassabāndhavō
yamakṣayaṃ rāmaṡarāttajīvitaḥ ॥
In spite of being earnestly
dissuaded by me, your good friend,
if you were to abduct Seetā forcibly,
your army will be decimated and
you will go to the abode of Death
along with your kith and kin,
your life taken by Rāma’s arrows!
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே அஷ்டத்ரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ।
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
araṇyakāṇḍē aṣṭatriṃṡassargaḥ ।
Thus concludes the thirty eighth Sarga
in Araṇya Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
