    Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 36

    Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 36
In this Sarga, Rāvaṇa tells Māreeca that Rāma, a wretched Kshatriya, has killed Khara, Dūshaṇa, Triṡira and fourteen thousand other Rākshasas, who were enjoying themselves in Janasthāna harassing the Munis, following his orders. He also says that Rāma cut off the nose and ears of his sister Ṡūrpaṇakhā without a reason, just to show off his muscle.
Rāvaṇa asks Māreeca for help. He asks him to go and move around the Āṡrama of Rāma, disguised as an attractive golden-hued deer with silvery spots, so that Seetā would see him and would ask Rāma and Lakshmaṇa to catch him.
Rāvaṇa says that he would then abduct Seetā who would be left alone, which would weaken Rāma, making it easy for him to strike Rāma. The mention of the name of Rāma makes Māreeca, who had already tasted the valor of Rāma once, frightened and his face becomes dry.

Hearing that account of Rāma from him,
the face of Mahātma Māreeca became dry
and he was gripped with fear.

Feeling miserable, licking his dry lips,
and eyes not blinking, he looked at
    Rāvaṇa like someone dead would!

    Having already tasted Rāma’s valor
in the great Vana once, he,
    with palms joined in obedience,
said these words, with fear and worry,
that would bode well for Rāvaṇa and himself as well:
    இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
    ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    அரண்யகாண்டே ஷட்த்ரிம்ஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
    ityārṣē vālmīkīyē

Thus concludes the thirty sixth Sarga
in Araṇya Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
You have completed reading 7708 Ṡlōkas out of ~24,000 Ṡlōkas of Vālmeeki Rāmāyaṇa.
