Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 23
In this Sarga, as Khara's army starts, many a bad omen portending disaster, are seen. But Khara does not care for them, in his folly. He excites the army with his roar. The army marches on. Maharshis and Dēvas gather to witness the battle, hailing victory to Rāma.
3.23.1 தஸ்மிந்யாதே பலே கோரம்
அஸிவம் ஸோணிதோதகம் ।
அப்யவர்ஷந்மஹாமேக:
துமுலோ கர்தபாருண: ॥
tasminyātē balē ghōram
aṡivaṃ ṡōṇitōdakam ।
abhyavarṣanmahāmēghaḥ
tumulō gardabhāruṇaḥ ॥
As that grisly army set forth,
tumultuous, massive and donkey-colored clouds
showered ominous rain that resembled blood.
3.23.2 நிபேதுஸ்துரகாஸ்தஸ்ய
ரதயுக்தா மஹாஜவா: ।
ஸமே புஷ்பசிதே தேஸே
ராஜமார்கே யத்ருச்சயா ॥
nipētusturagāstasya
rathayuktā mahājavāḥ ।
samē puṣpacitē dēṡē
rājamārgē yadṛcchayā ॥
The mighty fast horses
which were yoked to the chariot,
stumbled unexpectedly even on the
highway that was even and strewn with flowers.
3.23.3 ஸ்யாமம் ருதிரபர்யந்தம்
பபூவ பரிவேஷணம் ।
அலாதசக்ரப்ரதிமம்
பரிக்ருஹ்ய திவாகரம் ॥
ṡyāmaṃ rudhiraparyantaṃ
babhūva parivēṣaṇam ।
alātacakrapratimaṃ
parigṛhya divākaram ॥
The sun was surrounded by a
dark corona with a red edge,
resembling a circle seen
when a fire-brand is whirled.
3.23.4 ததோ த்வஜமுபாகம்ய
ஹேமதண்டம் ஸமுச்ச்ரிதம் ।
ஸமாக்ரம்ய மஹாகாய:
தஸ்தௌ க்ருத்ரஸ்ஸுதாருண: ॥
tatō dhvajamupāgamya
hēmadaṇḍaṃ samucchritam ।
samākramya mahākāyaḥ
tasthau gṛdhrassudāruṇaḥ ॥
Then a frightful vulture with an immense body
came hovering and perched itself on the
flag at the top of the tall golden staff.
3.23.5 ஜநஸ்தாநஸமீபே து
ஸமாகம்ய கரஸ்வநா: ।
விஸ்வராந்விவிதாம்ஸ்சக்ரு:
மாம்ஸாதா ம்ருகபக்ஷிண: ॥
janasthānasamīpē tu
samāgamya kharasvanāḥ ।
visvarānvividhāṃṡcakruḥ
māṃsādā mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ ॥
Various kinds of birds and beasts
that love feeding on flesh
gathered around Janasthāna,
uttering discordant cries
in their grating voices.
3.23.6 வ்யாஜஹ்ருஸ்ச ப்ரதீப்தாயாம்
திஸி வை பைரவஸ்வநம் ।
அஸிவம் யாதுதாநாநாம்
ஸிவா கோரா மஹாஸ்வநா: ॥
vyājahruṡca pradīptāyāṃ
diṡi vai bhairavasvanam ।
aṡivaṃ yātudhānānāṃ
ṡivā ghōrā mahāsvanāḥ ॥
Jackals with loud and grating voices
howled hideously facing the quarter
where (the sun) was blazing,
presaging disaster to the Rākshasas.
3.23.7 ப்ரபிந்நகிரிஸங்காஸா:
தோயஸோணிததாரிண: ।
ஆகாஸம் ததநாகாஸம்
சக்ருர்பீமா வலாஹகா: ॥
prabhinnagirisaṅkāṡāḥ
tōyaṡōṇitadhāriṇaḥ ।
ākāṡaṃ tadanākāṡaṃ
cakrurbhīmā valāhakāḥ ॥
Frightful clouds swollen with blood-red water,
that resembled mountains that were blasted,
covered the sky without an opening.
3.23.8 பபூவ திமிரம் கோரம்
உத்ததம் ரோமஹர்ஷணம் ।
திஸோ வா விதிஸோ வாபி
ந ச வ்யக்தம் சகாஸிரே ॥
babhūva timiraṃ ghōram
uddhataṃ rōmaharṣaṇam ।
diṡō vā vidiṡō vāpi
na ca vyaktaṃ cakāṡirē ॥
An immense darkness, so terrifying
that it made one's hair stand on end
descended, making it impossible to see
the quarters or the intermediate points.
3.23.9-10a க்ஷதஜார்த்ரஸவர்ணாபா
ஸந்த்யாகாலம் விநா பபௌ ।
கரஸ்யாபிமுகா நேது:
ததா கோரம்ருகா: ககா: ॥
கங்ககோமாயுக்ருத்ராஸ்ச
சுக்ருஸுர்பயஸம்ஸிந: ।
kṣatajārdrasavarṇābhā
sandhyākālaṃ vinā babhau ।
kharasyābhimukhā nēduḥ
tadā ghōramṛgāḥ khagāḥ ॥
kaṅkagōmāyugṛdhrāṡca
cukruṡurbhayaṡaṃsinaḥ ।
A scarlet twilight, ugly like a raw wound,
descended in an untimely manner.
Fierce beasts and birds howled and cried at Khara.
Eagles, jackals and vultures uttered
lugubrious cries, portending calamity.
3.23.10b-11a நித்யாஸுபகரா யுத்தே
ஸிவா கோரநிதர்ஸநா: ॥
நேதுர்பலஸ்யாபிமுகம்
ஜ்வாலோத்காரிபிராநநை: ।
nityāṡubhakarā yuddhē
ṡivā ghōranidarṡanāḥ ॥
nēdurbalasyābhimukhaṃ
jvālōdgāribhirānanaiḥ ।
Repulsive vixens with flaming mouths,
which always bode disaster in battle,
wailed facing that army.
3.23.11b-12 கபந்த: பரிகாபாஸோ
த்ருஸ்யதே பாஸ்கராந்திகே ।
ஜக்ராஹ ஸூர்யம் ஸ்வர்பாநு:
அபர்வணி மஹாக்ரஹ: ।
ப்ரவாதி மாருதஸ்ஸீக்ரம்
நிஷ்ப்ரபோऽபூத்திவாகர: ॥
kabandhaḥ parighābhāsō
dṛṡyatē bhāskarāntikē ।
jagrāha sūryaṃ svarbhānuḥ
aparvaṇi mahāgrahaḥ ।
pravāti mārutaṡṡīghraṃ
niṣprabhō'bhūddivākaraḥ ॥
A headless torso that looked like an iron club
was seen in the vicinity of the sun.
The vindictive Rāhu eclipsed the sun
though it was not the day of new moon.
The wind blew a violent gale
and the sun became lackluster.
3.23.13-14a உத்பேதுஸ்ச விநா ராத்ரிம்
தாரா: கத்யோதஸப்ரபா: ।
ஸம்லீநமீநவிஹகா
நலிந்யஸ்ஸுஷ்கபங்கஜா: ॥
தஸ்மிந் க்ஷணே பபூவுஸ்ச
விநா புஷ்பபலைர்த்ருமா: ।
utpētuṡca vinā rātriṃ
tārāḥ khadyōtasaprabhāḥ ।
saṃlīnamīnavihagā
nalinyaṡṡuṣkapaṅkajāḥ ॥
tasmin kṣaṇē babhūvuṡca
vinā puṣpaphalairdrumāḥ ।
Stars twinkling like fireflies
emerged even though it was not night.
The lotuses in the lotus ponds dried up
and the fish and aquatic birds therein were subdued.
Suddenly the trees were denuded of fruit and flower.
3.23.14b-15a உத்தூதஸ்ச விநா வாதம்
ரேணுர்ஜலதராருண: ॥
வீசீகூசீதி வாஸ்யந்த்யோ
பபூவுஸ்தத்ர ஸாரிகா: ।
uddhūtaṡca vinā vātaṃ
rēṇurjaladharāruṇaḥ ॥
vīcīkūcīti vāṡyantyō
babhūvustatra ṡārikāḥ ।
A storm of dust resembling a red-gray cloud
arose without any wind blowing.
Ṡārika birds tweeted confusedly.
3.23.15b-16a உல்காஸ்சாபி ஸநிர்காதா
நிபேதுர்கோரதர்ஸநா: ॥
ப்ரசசால மஹீ ஸர்வா
ஸஸைலவநகாநநா ।
ulkāṡcāpi sanirghātā
nipēturghōradarṡanāḥ ॥
pracacāla mahī sarvā
saṡailavanakānanā ।
Meteors along with lightning fell portending disaster.
The earth with its mountains, woods and forests, shook.
3.23.16b-17a கரஸ்ய ச ரதஸ்தஸ்ய
நர்தமாநஸ்ய தீமத: ॥
ப்ராகம்பத புஜஸ்ஸவ்ய:
ஸ்வரஸ்சாஸ்யாவஸஜ்ஜத ।
kharasya ca rathasthasya
nardamānasya dhīmataḥ ॥
prākampata bhujassavyaḥ
svaraṡcāsyāvasajjata ।
As the capable Khara seated in his chariot
let off a war-whoop, he felt a tremor
in his left arm, and his voice quavered.
