Aranya Kaanda - Sarga 8
In this short Sarga, Rāma takes leave of Suteekshṇa and heads to the Daṇḍaka forest along with Lakshmaṇa and Seetā.
3.8.1 ராமஸ்து ஸஹஸௌமித்ரி:
ஸுதீக்ஷ்ணேநாபிபூஜித: ।
பரிணாம்ய நிஸாம் தத்ர
ப்ரபாதே ப்ரத்யபுத்யத ॥
rāmastu sahasaumitriḥ
sutīkṣṇēnābhipūjitaḥ ।
pariṇāmya niṡāṃ tatra
prabhātē pratyabudhyata ॥
Rāma along with Lakshmaṇa, spent the night
receiving the hospitality of Suteekshṇa
and woke up in the morning.
3.8.2 உத்தாய து யதாகாலம்
ராகவஸ்ஸஹஸீதயா ।
உபாஸ்ப்ருஸ்ய ஸுஸீதேந
தோயேநோத்பலகந்திநா ॥
utthāya tu yathākālaṃ
rāghavassahasītayā ।
upāspṛṡya suṡītēna
tōyēnōtpalagandhinā ॥
Rāghava, along with Seetā,
getting up at the usual hour,
touched cold water that had the fragrance of lilies.
3.8.3-4 அத தேऽக்நிம் ஸுராம்ஸ்சைவ
வைதேஹீ ராமலக்ஷ்மணௌ ।
கால்யம் விதிவதப்யர்ச்ய
தபஸ்விஸரணே வநே ॥
உதயந்தம் திநகரம்
த்ருஷ்ட்வா விகதகல்மஷா: ।
ஸுதீக்ஷ்ணமபிகம்யேதம்
ஸ்லக்ஷ்ணம் வசநமப்ருவந் ॥
atha tē'gniṃ surāṃṡcaiva
vaidēhī rāmalakṣmaṇau ।
kālyaṃ vidhivadabhyarcya
tapasviṡaraṇē vanē ॥
udayantaṃ dinakaraṃ
dṛṣṭvā vigatakalmaṣāḥ ।
sutīkṣṇamabhigamyēdaṃ
ṡlakṣṇaṃ vacanamabruvan ॥
Then they, Vaidēhi, Rama and Lakshmaṇa,
worshipped the fire and the Dēvas in a
manner apt in the Vana, where Tapasvis live.
And having freed themselves from
all afflictions by gazing at the rising sun,
they went to Suteekshṇa and spoke
these words in a gentle manner:
3.8.5 ஸுகோஷிதாஸ்ஸ்ம பகவந்
த்வயா பூஜ்யேந பூஜிதா: ।
அப்ருச்சாம: ப்ராயாஸ்யாமோ
முநயஸ்த்வரயந்தி ந: ॥
sukhōṣitāssma bhagavan
tvayā pūjyēna pūjitāḥ ।
apṛcchāmaḥ prāyāsyāmō
munayastvarayanti naḥ ॥
We spent the night in comfort
receiving the hospitality from you,
who deserves all deference.
We would like to take leave of you and proceed.
The Munis are hurrying us.
3.8.6 த்வராமஹே வயம் த்ரஷ்டும்
க்ருத்ஸ்நமாஸ்ரமமண்டலம் ।
ருஷீணாம் புண்யஸீலாநாம்
தண்டகாரண்யவாஸிநாம் ॥
tvarāmahē vayaṃ draṣṭuṃ
kṛtsnamāṡramamaṇḍalam ।
ṛṣīṇāṃ puṇyaṡīlānāṃ
daṇḍakāraṇyavāsinām ॥
And we ourselves are eager to see
the entire settlement of Āṡramas of the holy Ṛshis
who have made the Daṇḍaka forest their home.
3.8.7 அப்யநுஜ்ஞாதுமிச்சாம:
ஸஹைபிர்முநிபுங்கவை: ।
தர்மநித்யைஸ்தபோதாந்தை:
விஸிகைரிவ பாவகை: ॥
abhyanujñātumicchāmaḥ
sahaibhirmunipuṅgavaiḥ ।
dharmanityaistapōdāntaiḥ
viṡikhairiva pāvakaiḥ ॥
We beg for your permission to leave
along with these eminent Munis
who are like fire sans the flames,
ever adhering to Dharma, Tapa and discipline.
3.8.8-9 அவிஷஹ்யாதபோ யாவத்
ஸூர்யோ நாதிவிராஜதே ।
அமார்கேணாகதாம் லக்ஷ்மீம்
ப்ராப்யேவாந்வயவர்ஜித: ।
தாவதிச்சாமஹே கந்தும்
இத்யுக்த்வா சரணௌ முநே: ।
வவந்தே ஸஹஸௌமித்ரி:
ஸீதயா ஸஹ ராகவ: ॥
aviṣahyātapō yāvat
sūryō nātivirājatē ।
amārgēṇāgatāṃ lakṣmīm
prāpyēvānvayavarjitaḥ ।
tāvadicchāmahē gantum
ityuktvā caraṇau munēḥ ।
vavandē sahasaumitriḥ
sītayā saha rāghavaḥ ॥
We would like to leave before the sun becomes
hot and unbearable, like a man of modest origins
upon winning a fortune by improper means.
Saying thus Rāma, along with Seetā and Lakshmaṇa
offered Vandana to the feet of that Muni.
3.8.10 தௌ ஸம்ஸ்ப்ருஸந்தௌ சரணௌ
உத்தாப்ய முநிபுங்கவ: ।
காடமாலிங்க்ய ஸஸ்நேஹம்
இதம் வசநமப்ரவீத் ॥
tau saṃspṛṡantau caraṇau
utthāpya munipuṅgavaḥ ।
gāḍhamāliṅgya sasnēham
idaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥
That eminent Muni raised them
who had touched his feet,
embraced them heartily and said
these words with all affection:
3.8.11 அரிஷ்டம் கச்ச பந்தாநம்
ராம ஸௌமித்ரிணா ஸஹ ।
ஸீதயா சாநயா ஸார்தம்
சாயயேவாநுவ்ருத்தயா ॥
ariṣṭaṃ gaccha panthānaṃ
rāma saumitriṇā saha ।
sītayā cānayā sārdham
chāyayēvānuvṛttayā ॥
O Rāma, may you go your way in all safety,
along with Sowmitri and Seetā
who follows you like your shadow.
3.8.12 பஸ்யாऽஸ்ரமபதம் ரம்யம்
தண்டகாரண்யவாஸிநாம் ।
ஏஷாம் தபஸ்விநாம் வீர
தபஸா பாவிதாத்மநாம் ॥
paṡyā'ṡramapadaṃ ramyaṃ
daṇḍakāraṇyavāsinām ।
ēṣāṃ tapasvināṃ vīra
tapasā bhāvitātmanām ॥
O Veera! Visit the beautiful Āṡramas of these Tapasvis
who live in the Daṇḍaka forest and
have realized the Self by their Tapa.
3.8.13-15 ஸப்ராஜ்யபலமூலாநி
புஷ்பிதாநி வநாநி ச ।
ப்ரஸஸ்தம்ருகயூதாநி
ஸாந்தபக்ஷிகணாநி ச ॥
புல்லபங்கஜஷண்டாநி
ப்ரஸந்நஸலிலாநி ச ।
காரண்டவவிகீர்ணாநி
தடாகாநி ஸராம்ஸி ச ॥
த்ரக்ஷ்யஸே த்ருஷ்டிரம்யாணி
கிரிப்ரஸ்ரவணாநி ச ।
ரமணீயாந்யரண்யாநி
மயூராபிருதாநி ச ॥
saprājyaphalamūlāni
puṣpitāni vanāni ca ।
praṡastamṛgayūthāni
ṡāntapakṣigaṇāni ca ॥
phullapaṅkajaṣaṇḍāni
prasannasalilāni ca ।
kāraṇḍavavikīrṇāni
taṭākāni sarāṃsi ca ॥
drakṣyasē dṛṣṭiramyāṇi
giriprasravaṇāni ca ।
ramaṇīyānyaraṇyāni
mayūrābhirutāni ca ॥
There you will see woods with
plentiful flowers, fruits and roots.
You will see droves of enchanting animals
and flocks of peaceful birds.
And you will see ponds with clear water
with lotuses in bloom and Kāraṇḍa birds
and mountain streams that are like candy to the eye.
And you will see beautiful woods
echoing with peacock caws.
3.8.16 கம்யதாம் வத்ஸ ஸௌமித்ரே
பவாநபி ச கச்சது ।
ஆகந்தவ்யம் ச தே த்ருஷ்ட்வா
புநரேவாஸ்ரமம் ப்ரதி ॥
gamyatāṃ vatsa saumitrē
bhavānapi ca gacchatu ।
āgantavyaṃ ca tē dṛṣṭvā
punarēvāṡramaṃ prati ॥
Go, my child, and you too,
O Sowmitri, my dear, go.
Having seen them all, you should
come to this Āṡrama again.
3.8.17 ஏவமுக்தஸ்ததேத்யுக்த்வா
காகுத்ஸ்தஸ்ஸஹலக்ஷ்மண: ।
ப்ரதக்ஷிணம் முநிம் க்ருத்வா
ப்ரஸ்தாதுமுபசக்ரமே ॥
ēvamuktastathētyuktvā
kākutsthassahalakṣmaṇaḥ ।
pradakṣiṇaṃ muniṃ kṛtvā
prasthātumupacakramē ॥
Saying 'Yes', to those (affectionate) words,
Kākutstha, along with Lakshmaṇa
circumambulated the Muni and got ready to leave.
3.8.18 ததஸ்ஸுபதரே தூணீ
தநுஷீ சாயதேக்ஷணா ।
ததௌ ஸீதா தயோர்ப்ராத்ரோ:
கங்கௌ ச விமலௌ தத: ॥
tataṡṡubhatarē tūṇī
dhanuṣī cāyatēkṣaṇā ।
dadau sītā tayōrbhrātrōḥ
khaṅgau ca vimalau tataḥ ॥
And then the wide-eyed Seetā handed the brothers
their splendid quivers, bows and shiny swords.
3.8.19 ஆபத்ய ச ஸுபே தூணீ
சாபே சாதாய ஸுஸ்வநௌ ।
நிஷ்க்ராந்தாவாஸ்ரமாத்கந்தும்
உபௌ தௌ ராமலக்ஷ்மணௌ ॥
ābadhya ca ṡubhē tūṇī
cāpē cādāya susvanau ।
niṣkrāntāvāṡramādgantum
ubhau tau rāmalakṣmaṇau ॥
Tying those excellent quivers (on their back)
and taking the bows as they made a jingle,
both Rāma and Lakshmaṇa left
the Āṡrama, to go on their path together.
3.8.20 ஸ்ரீமந்தௌ ரூபஸம்பந்நௌ
தீப்யமாநௌ ஸ்வதேஜஸா ।
ப்ரஸ்திதௌ த்ருதசாபௌ தௌ
ஸீதயா ஸஹ ராகவௌ ॥
ṡrīmantau rūpasampannau
dīpyamānau svatējasā ।
prasthitau dhṛtacāpau tau
sītayā saha rāghavau ॥
The richly endowed scions of the Raghus,
handsome and dazzling with their natural radiance,
started on their way, wielding bows,
with Seetā accompanying them.
இத்யார்ஷே வால்மீகீயே
ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அரண்யகாண்டே அஷ்டமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē vālmīkīyē
ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē
araṇyakāṇḍē aṣṭamassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the eighth Sarga
in Araṇya Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Maharshi Vālmeeki.
