    Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 110
    In this Sarga, Vasishṭha urges Rāma one last time to get crowned and not break the age old tradition of his long lineage, starting from Ikshwāku all the way down to Daṡaratha, of the eldest becoming the king.
    2.110.1-2 க்ருத்தமாஜ்ஞாய ராமம் து
    வஸிஷ்ட: ப்ரத்யுவாச ஹ ।
    ஜாபாலிரபி ஜாநீதே
    லோகஸ்யாஸ்ய கதாகதிம் ॥
    நிவர்தயிதுகாமஸ்து
    த்வாமேதத்வாக்யமுக்தவாந் ।
    இமாம் லோகஸமுத்பத்திம்
    லோகநாத நிபோத மே ॥
    kruddhamājñāya rāmaṃ tu
    vasiṣṭhaḥ pratyuvāca ha ।
    jābālirapi jānītē
    lōkasyāsya gatāgatim ॥


    nivartayitukāmastu
    tvāmētadvākyamuktavān ।
    imāṃ lōkasamutpattiṃ
    lōkanātha nibōdha mē ॥
    Sensing that Rāma was irate, Vasishṭha responded:
    Jābāli is aware of the ways of this world.
    He said what he said only in the hope
    of dissuading you from your resolve.
    Let me put in perspective for you,
    the emergence of this world, O lord of the worlds!
    2.110.3 ஸர்வம் ஸலிலமேவாஸீத்
    ப்ருதிவீ யத்ர நிர்மிதா ।
    ததஸ்ஸமபவத்ப்ரஹ்மா
    ஸ்வயம்பூர்தைவதைஸ்ஸஹ ॥
    sarvaṃ salilamēvāsīt
    pṛthivī yatra nirmitā ।
    tatassamabhavadbrahmā
    svayambhūrdaivataissaha ॥
    Once upon a time there was nothing but water,
    from which was built this earth.
    There emerged Brahma on his own along with Dēvatas.
    2.110.4 ஸ வராஹஸ்ததோ பூத்வா
    ப்ரோஜ்ஜஹார வஸுந்தராம் ।
    அஸ்ருஜச்ச ஜகத்ஸர்வம்
    ஸஹ புத்ரை: க்ருதாத்மபி: ॥
    sa varāhastatō bhūtvā
    prōjjahāra vasundharām ।
    asṛjacca jagatsarvaṃ
    saha putraiḥ kṛtātmabhiḥ ॥
    Then he took the form of a boar
    and lifted the earth (out of water).
    Then he created this world along with
    his sons, who were thus charged to.
    2.110.5 ஆகாஸப்ரபவோ ப்ரஹ்மா
    ஸாஸ்வதோ நித்ய அவ்யய: ।
    தஸ்மாந்மரீசிஸ்ஸஞ்ஜஜ்ஞே
    மரீசே: கஸ்யபஸ்ஸுத: ॥
    ākāṡaprabhavō brahmā
    ṡāṡvatō nitya avyayaḥ ।
    tasmānmarīcissañjajñē
    marīcēḥ kaṡyapassutaḥ ॥
    The eternal, permanent and imperishable
    Brahma emerged from nothingness.
    From him was born Mareeci.
    Mareeci’s son is Kāṡyapa. Here is an easy reference of the lineage of Rāma, that was first given in the seventieth Sarga of Bāla Kāṇḍa, in the context of Rāma’s wedding :

    2.110.6 விவஸ்வாந்காஸ்யபாஜ்ஜஜ்ஞே
    மநுர்வைவஸ்வதஸ்ஸுத: ।
    மநு: ப்ரஜாபதி: பூர்வம்
    இக்ஷ்வாகுஸ்து மநோஸ்ஸுத: ॥
    vivasvānkāṡyapājjajñē
    manurvaivasvatassutaḥ ।
    manuḥ prajāpatiḥ pūrvam
    ikṣvākustu manōssutaḥ ॥
    From Kāṡyapa was born Vivaswa.
    Manu was the son of Vivaswa.
    Manu was a Prajāpati, a progenitor.
    Ikshwāku was the son of Manu.
    2.110.7 யஸ்யேயம் ப்ரதமம் தத்தா
    ஸம்ருத்தா மநுநா மஹீ ।
    தமிக்ஷ்வாகுமயோத்யாயாம்
    ராஜாநம் வித்தி பூர்வகம் ॥
    yasyēyaṃ prathamaṃ dattā
    samṛddhā manunā mahī ।
    tamikṣvākumayōdhyāyāṃ
    rājānaṃ viddhi pūrvakam ॥
    Know that that Ikshwāku is
    the first king of Ayōdhyā,
    to whom the abundant and prosperous
    earth was given first by Manu.
    2.110.8 இக்ஷ்வாகோஸ்து ஸுத ஸ்ரீமாந்
    குக்ஷிரேவேதி விஸ்ருத: ।
    குக்ஷேரதாத்மஜோ வீரோ
    விகுக்ஷிருதபத்யத ॥
    ikṣvākōstu suta ṡrīmān
    kukṣirēvēti viṡrutaḥ ।
    kukṣērathātmajō vīrō
    vikukṣirudapadyata ॥
    The richly endowed son of Ikshwāku was
    well known by the name Kukshi.
    The well-endowed Vikukshi
    was born as the son of Kukshi.
    2.110.9 விகுக்ஷேஸ்து மஹாதேஜா
    பாண: புத்ர ப்ரதாபவாந் ।
    பாணஸ்ய து மஹாபாஹு:
    அநரண்யோ மஹாயஸா: ॥
    vikukṣēstu mahātējā
    bāṇaḥ putra pratāpavān ।
    bāṇasya tu mahābāhuḥ
    anaraṇyō mahāyaṡāḥ ॥
    Vikukshi’s son was the
    supremely radiant and valiant Bāṇa.
    Bāṇa’s son was the renowned
    and mighty-armed Anaraṇya.
    2.110.10 நாநாவ்ருஷ்டிர்பபூவாஸ்மிந்
    நதுர்பிக்ஷம் ஸதாம் வரே ।
    அநரண்யே மஹாராஜே
    தஸ்கரோ நாபி கஸ்சந ॥
    nānāvṛṣṭirbabhūvāsmin
    nadurbhikṣaṃ satāṃ varē ।
    anaraṇyē mahārājē
    taskarō nāpi kaṡcana ॥
    Under the great rule of Anaraṇya,
    the foremost among good men,
    there was never a drought or famine
    and there was no single thief for the count.
    2.110.11-12a அநரண்யாந்மஹாபாஹு:
    ப்ருது ராஜா பபூவ ஹ ।
    தஸ்மாத்ப்ருதோமஹாராஜ:
    த்ரிஸங்குருதபத்யத ॥
    ஸ ஸத்யவசநாத்வீர:
    ஸஸரீரோ திவம் கத: ।
    anaraṇyānmahābāhuḥ
    pṛthu rājā babhūva ha ।
    tasmātpṛthōmahārājaḥ
    triṡaṅkurudapadyata ॥
    sa satyavacanādhvīraḥ
    saṡarīrō divaṃ gataḥ ।
    From Anaraṇya was born
    the mighty armed king Pṛthu.
    From that Pṛthu was born
    the great king Triṡaṅku.
    That valiant one,
    by virtue of his truthfulness
    ascended to heaven with mortal body.
    2.110.12b-13a த்ரிஸங்கோரபவத்ஸூநு:
    துந்துமாரோ மஹாயஸா: ॥
    துந்துமாராந்மஹாதேஜா
    யுவநாஸ்வோ வ்யஜாயத ।
    triṡaṅkōrabhavatsūnuḥ
    dundhumārō mahāyaṡāḥ ॥
    dundhumārānmahātējā
    yuvanāṡvō vyajāyata ।
    The supremely renowned Dundhumāra
    was born as the son of Triṡaṅku.
    From Dundhumāra was born
    the supremely radiant Yuvanāṡwa.
    2.110.13b-15a யுவநாஸ்வஸுதஸ்ஸ்ரீமாந்
    மாந்தாதா ஸமபத்யத ॥
    மாந்தாதுஸ்து மஹாதேஜா:
    ஸுஸந்திருதபத்யத ।
    ஸுஸந்தேரபி புத்ரௌ த்வௌ
    த்ருவஸந்தி: ப்ரஸேநஜித் ॥
    யஸஸ்வீ த்ருவஸந்தேஸ்து
    பரதோ ரிபுஸூதந: ।
    yuvanāṡvasutaṡṡrīmān
    māndhātā samapadyata ॥
    māndhātustu mahātējāḥ
    susandhirudapadyata ।
    susandhērapi putrau dvau
    dhruvasandhiḥ prasēnajit ॥
    yaṡasvī dhruvasandhēstu
    bharatō ripusūdanaḥ ।
    Richly endowed Māndhāta was born
    as the son of Yuvanāṡwa.
    From Māndhāta was born
    the supremely radiant Susandhi.
    Susandhi had two sons,
    Dhruvasandhi and Prasēnajit.
    The renowned Bharata, the slayer of enemies,
    was born to Dhruvasandhi.
    2.110.15b-16 பரதாத்து மஹாபாஹோ:
    அஸிதோ நாம ஜாயத ॥
    யஸ்யைதே ப்ரதிராஜாந
    உதபத்யந்த ஸத்ரவ: ।
    ஹைஹயாஸ்தாலஜங்காஸ்ச
    ஸூராஸ்ச ஸஸிபிந்தவ: ॥
    bharatāttu mahābāhōḥ
    asitō nāma jāyata ॥
    yasyaitē pratirājāna
    udapadyanta ṡatravaḥ ।
    haihayāstālajaṅghāṡca
    ṡūrāṡca ṡaṡibindavaḥ ॥
    From Bharata was born the
    mighty armed son known as Asita.
    His rivals, the Haihayas, the Tālajaṅghas,
    the Ṡūras and the Ṡaṡibindus became his enemies.
    2.110.17 தாம்ஸ்து ஸர்வாந்ப்ரதிவ்யூஹ்ய
    யுத்தே ராஜா ப்ரவாஸித: ।
    ஸ ச ஸைலவரே ரம்யே
    பபூவாபிரதோ முநி: ॥
    tāṃstu sarvānprativyūhya
    yuddhē rājā pravāsitaḥ ।
    sa ca ṡailavarē ramyē
    babhūvābhiratō muniḥ ॥
    The King had to flee the country,
    after encountering all of them in battle.
    Then he became a Muni relishing
    the beauty of the best of mountains.
    2.110.18 த்வே சாஸ்ய பார்யே கர்பிண்யௌ
    பபூவதுரிதி ஸ்ருதி: ।
    ஏகா கர்பவிநாஸாய
    ஸபத்ந்யை கரலம் ததௌ ॥
    dvē cāsya bhāryē garbhiṇyau
    babhūvaturiti ṡrutiḥ ।
    ēkā garbhavināṡāya
    sapatnyai garalaṃ dadau ॥
    It is said that he had two wives, who became pregnant.
    One of them poisoned her co-wife
    so that she would have a miscarriage.
    2.110.19-20a பார்கவஸ்ச்யவநோ நாம
    ஹிமவந்தமுபாஸ்ரித: ।
    தம்ருஷிம் ஸமுபாகம்ய
    காலிந்தீ த்வப்யவாதயத் ॥
    ஸ தாமப்யவதத்விப்ரோ
    வரேப்ஸும் புத்ரஜந்மநி ।
    bhārgavaṡcyavanō nāma
    himavantamupāṡritaḥ ।
    tamṛṣiṃ samupāgamya
    kālindī tvabhyavādayat ॥
    sa tāmabhyavadadviprō
    varēpsuṃ putrajanmani ।
    Cyavana from the lineage of Bhṛgu
    was living by that (mountain) Himavān.
    Kālindi approached that Ṛshi and prostrated.
    That Brāhmaṇa then said to her,
    who was wishing for a boon to have a son:
    2.110.20b-21a புத்ரஸ்தே பவிதா தேவி
    மஹாத்மா லோகவிஸ்ருத: ॥
    தார்மிகஸ்ச ஸுஸீலஸ்ச
    வம்ஸகர்தாऽரிஸூதந: ।
    putrastē bhavitā dēvi
    mahātmā lōkaviṡrutaḥ ॥
    dhārmikaṡca suṡīlaṡca
    vaṃṡakartā'risūdanaḥ ।
    O queen, you will certainly have a son,
    who will be a Mahātma and Dhārmika
    and he will be well known in the world.
    He will be a man of character and a slayer of enemies.
    He will enhance the name of the lineage.
    2.110.21b-22 க்ருத்வா ப்ரதக்ஷிணம் ஹ்ருஷ்டா
    முநிம்தமநுமாந்ய ச ॥
    பத்மபத்ரஸமாநாக்ஷம்
    பத்மகர்பஸமப்ரபம் ।
    ததஸ்ஸா க்ருஹமாகம்ய
    தேவீ புத்ரம் வ்யஜாயத ॥
    kṛtvā pradakṣiṇaṃ hṛṣṭā
    muniṃtamanumānya ca ॥
    padmapatrasamānākṣaṃ
    padmagarbhasamaprabham ।
    tatassā gṛhamāgamya
    dēvī putraṃ vyajāyata ॥
    Delighted, she circumambulated and
    took leave of the Muni and went home.
    The queen then gave birth to a son
    whose eyes rivaled lotus petals,
    and whose radiance rivaled that of Brahma.
    2.110.23 ஸபத்ந்யா து கரஸ்தஸ்யை
    தத்தோ கர்பஜிகாம்ஸயா ।
    கரேண ஸஹ தேநைவ
    ஜாதஸ்ஸ ஸகரோऽபவத் ॥
    sapatnyā tu garastasyai
    dattō garbhajighāṃsayā ।
    garēṇa saha tēnaiva
    jātassa sagarō'bhavat ॥
    As he was born along with the poison that was
    given by his step mother to destroy the fetus,
    he came to be known as Sagara.
    Sagara = Sa + Gara = along with Gara, poison.
    2.110.24 ஸ ராஜா ஸகரோ நாம
    யஸ்ஸமுத்ரமகாநயத் ।
    இஷ்ட்வா பர்வணி வேகேந
    த்ராஸயந்தமிமா: ப்ரஜா: ॥
    sa rājā sagarō nāma
    yassamudramakhānayat ।
    iṣṭvā parvaṇi vēgēna
    trāsayantamimāḥ prajāḥ ॥
    He is the king Sagara who was known for
    performing a Yajña and dredging the ocean
    that made people panic with
    the tempo of its swell on full moon days.
    2.110.25 அஸமஞ்ஜஸ்து புத்ரோऽபூத்
    ஸகரஸ்யேதி ந ஸ்ஸ்ருதம் ।
    ஜீவந்நேவ ஸ பித்ரா து
    நிரஸ்த: பாபகர்மக்ருத் ॥
    asamañjastu putrō'bhūt
    sagarasyēti na ṡṡrutam ।
    jīvannēva sa pitrā tu
    nirastaḥ pāpakarmakṛt ॥
    Then we hear that Asamañja
    happened to be the son of Sagara.
    He, of sinful deeds, was abandoned
    by his father while he was still alive.
    2.110.26 அம்ஸுமாநிதி புத்ரோऽபூத்
    அஸமஞ்ஜஸ்ய வீர்யவாந் ।
    திலீபோம்ஸுமத: புத்ரோ
    திலீபஸ்ய பகீரத: ॥
    aṃṡumāniti putrō'bhūt
    asamañjasya vīryavān ।
    dilīpōṃṡumataḥ putrō
    dilīpasya bhagīrathaḥ ॥
    A son known as Aṃṡumān, of great prowess,
    was born to Asamañja.
    Dileepa was the son of Aṃṡumān,
    and Bhageeratha was the son of Dileepa.
    2.110.27 பகீரதாத்ககுத்ஸ்தஸ்து
    காகுத்ஸ்தா யேந விஸ்ருதா: ।
    ககுத்ஸ்தஸ்ய ச புத்ரோऽபூத்
    ரகுர்யேந ச ராகவா: ॥
    bhagīrathātkakutsthastu
    kākutsthā yēna viṡrutāḥ ।
    kakutsthasya ca putrō'bhūt
    raghuryēna ca rāghavāḥ ॥
    Bhageeratha’s son was Kakutstha
    because of whom (his descendants)
    came to be well known as Kākutsthās.
    Raghu happened to be the son of Kakutstha
    because of whom (his descendants)
    came to be known as Rāghavas.
    2.110.28 ரகோஸ்து புத்ரஸ்தேஜஸ்வீ
    ப்ரவ்ருத்த: புருஷாதக: ।
    கல்மாஷபாதஸ்ஸௌதாஸ
    இத்யேவம் ப்ரதிதோ புவி ॥
    raghōstu putrastējasvī
    pravṛddhaḥ puruṣādakaḥ ।
    kalmāṣapādassaudāsa
    ityēvaṃ prathitō bhuvi ॥
    The radiant son of Raghu grew up
    to be famously known in this world
    as Purushādaka, Kalmāshapāda and Sowdāsa.
    2.110.29 கல்மாஷபாதபுத்ரோऽபூத்
    ஸங்கணஸ்த்விதி விஸ்ருத: ।
    யஸ்து தத்வீர்யமாஸாத்ய
    ஸஹஸைந்யோ வ்யநீநஸத் ॥
    kalmāṣapādaputrō'bhūt
    ṡaṅkhaṇastviti viṡrutaḥ ।
    yastu tadvīryamāsādya
    sahasainyō vyanīnaṡat ॥
    Kalmāshapāda had a son known well as Ṡaṅkhaṇa,
    who, pitted against his (Kalmāshapāda’s) might,
    was destroyed along with his army.
    2.110.30 ஸங்கணஸ்ய ச புத்ரோऽபூத்
    ஸூர ஸ்ரீமாந்ஸுதர்ஸந: ।
    ஸுதர்ஸநஸ்யாக்நிவர்ண:
    அக்நிவர்ணஸ்ய ஸீக்ரக: ॥
    ṡaṅkhaṇasya ca putrō'bhūt
    ṡūra ṡrīmānsudarṡanaḥ ।
    sudarṡanasyāgnivarṇaḥ
    agnivarṇasya ṡīghragaḥ ॥
    Ṡaṅkhaṇa’s son was the valiant and gracious Sudarṡana.
    Sudarṡana’s son was Agnivarṇa; and Agnivarṇa’s son, Ṡeeghraga.
    2.110.31 ஸீக்ரகஸ்ய மரு: புத்ரோ
    மரோ: புத்ர: ப்ரஸுஸ்ருவ: ।
    ப்ரஸுஸ்ருவஸ்ய புத்ரோபூத்
    அம்பரீஷோ மஹாத்யுதி: ॥
    ṡīghragasya maruḥ putrō
    marōḥ putraḥ praṡuṡruvaḥ ।
    praṡuṡruvasya putrōbhūt
    ambarīṣō mahādyutiḥ ॥
    Ṡeeghraga’s son was Maru, and Maru’s son Praṡuṡruva.
    Praṡuṡruva’s son was the resplendent Ambareesha.
    2.110.32 அம்பரீஷஸ்ய புத்ரோபூத்
    நஹுஷ: ஸத்யவிக்ரம: ।
    நஹுஷஸ்ய ச நாபாக:
    புத்ர: பரமதார்மிக: ॥
    ambarīṣasya putrōbhūt
    nahuṣaḥ satyavikramaḥ ।
    nahuṣasya ca nābhāgaḥ
    putraḥ paramadhārmikaḥ ॥
    Ambareesha’s son was Nahusha, a fierce man of his word.
    Nahusha’s son was Nābhāga, an absolute Dhārmika. For some reason, Yayāti, who was mentioned as the son of Nahusha and the father of Nābhāga in 1.70.42 is missing here.
    2.110.33 அஜஸ்ச ஸுவ்ரதஸ்சைவ
    நாபாகஸ்ய ஸுதாவுபௌ ।
    அஜஸ்யைவ ச தர்மாத்மா
    ராஜா தஸரதஸ்ஸுத: ॥
    ajaṡca suvrataṡcaiva
    nābhāgasya sutāvubhau ।
    ajasyaiva ca dharmātmā
    rājā daṡarathassutaḥ ॥
    Nābhāga had two sons, Aja and Suvrata.
    And Aja’s son was the Dharmātma King Daṡaratha.
    2.110.34 தஸ்ய ஜ்யேஷ்டோऽஸி தாயாதோ
    ராம இத்யபிவிஸ்ருத: ।
    தத்க்ருஹாண ஸ்வகம் ராஜ்யம்
    அவேக்ஷஸ்வ ஜநம் ந்ருப ॥
    tasya jyēṣṭhō'si dāyādō
    rāma ityabhiviṡrutaḥ ।
    tadgṛhāṇa svakaṃ rājyam
    avēkṣasva janaṃ nṛpa ॥
    You, known to fame as Rāma, his eldest son,
    are entitled to the inheritance.
    Hence, accept your very own kingdom and
    please look after all the people, O King!
    2.110.35 இக்ஷ்வாகூணாம் ஹி ஸர்வேஷாம்
    ராஜா பவதி பூர்வஜ: ।
    பூர்வஜே நாபர: புத்ரோ
    ஜ்யேஷ்டோ ராஜ்யேऽபிஷிச்யதே ॥
    ikṣvākūṇāṃ hi sarvēṣāṃ
    rājā bhavati pūrvajaḥ ।
    pūrvajē nāparaḥ putrō
    jyēṣṭhō rājyē'bhiṣicyatē ॥
    Only the first born became the king,
    O king, among all the Ikshwākus!
    Others would not, when the eldest is alive.
    Only the eldest gets crowned.
    2.110.36 ஸ ராகவாணாம் குலதர்மமாத்மந:
    ஸநாதநம் நாத்ய விஹந்துமர்ஹஸி ।
    ப்ரபூதரத்நாமநுஸாதி மேதிநீம்
    ப்ரபூதராஷ்ட்ராம் பித்ருவந்மஹாயஸ: ॥
    sa rāghavāṇāṃ kuladharmamātmanaḥ
    sanātanaṃ nādya vihantumarhasi ।
    prabhūtaratnāmanuṡādhi mēdinīṃ
    prabhūtarāṣṭrāṃ pitṛvanmahāyaṡaḥ ॥
    You shall not break now that age old
    family tradition of the Rāghavas.
    Rule this kingdom of immense wealth and territory,
    O renowned one, like your father!
    இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே
    வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
    அயோத்யாகாண்டே
    தஸோத்தரஸததமஸ்ஸர்க: ।
    ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē
    vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
    ayōdhyākāṇḍē
    daṡōttaraṡatatamassargaḥ ।
    Thus concludes the one hundred and tenth Sarga
    in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
    the first ever poem of humankind,
    composed by Vālmeeki.
