2.100.43-46 கச்சிச்சித்யஸதைர்ஜுஷ்டஸ்ஸுநிவிஷ்டஜநாகுல: ।
தேவஸ்தாநை: ப்ரபாபிஸ்ச தடாகைஸ்சோபஸோபித: ॥
ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டநரநாரீகஸ்ஸமாஜோத்ஸவஸோபித: ।
ஸுக்ருஷ்டஸீமா பஸுமாந்ஹிம்ஸாபி: பரிவர்ஜித: ॥
அதேவமாத்ருகோ ரம்யஸ்ஸ்வாபதை: பரிவர்ஜித: ।
பரித்யக்தோ பயைஸ்ஸர்வை: கநிபிஸ்சோபஸோபித: ॥
விவர்ஜிதோ நரை: பாபைர்மம பூர்வைஸ்ஸுரக்ஷித: ।
கச்சிஜ்ஜநபதஸ்ஸ்பீத: ஸுகம் வஸதி ராகவ ॥
kacciccityaṡatairjuṣṭassuniviṣṭajanākulaḥ ।
dēvasthānaiḥ prapābhiṡca taṭākaiṡcōpaṡōbhitaḥ ॥
prahṛṣṭanaranārīkassamājōtsavaṡōbhitaḥ ।
sukṛṣṭasīmā paṡumānhiṃsābhiḥ parivarjitaḥ ॥
adēvamātṛkō ramyaṡṡvāpadaiḥ parivarjitaḥ ।
parityaktō bhayaissarvaiḥ khanibhiṡcōpaṡōbhitaḥ ॥
vivarjitō naraiḥ pāpairmama pūrvaissurakṣitaḥ ।
kaccijjanapadassphītaḥ sukhaṃ vasati rāghava ॥
I trust, O Rāghava, that the countryside,
which has been looked after so well by my ancestors,
continues to be abundant and the people live there happily,
with its boundaries delineated by hundreds of marker stones,
with a teeming population that has contentedly settled in it,
adorned with many a place of worship,
with agriculture under water-shed and tank
and not left to the mercy of Nature’s forces,
where the men and women are always happy and gay,
rejoicing in its social festivities,
with no trace of violence of any sort
and nothing to fear from,
where every inch of the soil is well-tilled,
and boasting of the best of the cattle,
where everything is a delight to the eye,
where there is no fear of beasts of prey or of evil men,
and where there are rich mines!
2.100.47 கச்சித்தே தயிதாஸ்ஸர்வே க்ருஷிகோரக்ஷஜீவிந: ।
வார்தாயாம் ஸம்ஸ்ரித ஸ்தாத லோகோ ஹி ஸுகமேததே ॥
kaccittē dayitāssarvē kṛṣigōrakṣajīvinaḥ ।
vārtāyāṃ saṃṡrita stāta lōkō hi sukhamēdhatē ॥
I trust, my dear child, favored by you,
all those who live by tilling the soil and raising cows
are prospering by carrying on their respective vocations!
2.100.48 தேஷாம் குப்திபரீஹாரை: கச்சித்தே பரணம் க்ருதம் ।
ரக்ஷ்யா ஹி ராஜ்ஞா தர்மேண ஸர்வே விஷயவாஸிந: ॥
tēṣāṃ guptiparīhāraiḥ kaccittē bharaṇaṃ kṛtam ।
rakṣyā hi rājñā dharmēṇa sarvē viṣayavāsinaḥ ॥
I trust you are taking care of them
by providing for and protecting them.
For it is the responsibility of the king
to protect all the people of the realm
in accordance with Dharma!
2.100.49 கச்சிஸ்த்ரியஸ்ஸாந்த்வயஸி கச்சித்தாஸ்ச ஸுரக்ஷிதா: ।
கச்சிந்ந ஸ்ரத்தாஸ்யாஸாம் கச்சித்குஹ்யம் ந பாஷஸே ॥
kaccistriyassāntvayasi kaccittāṡca surakṣitāḥ ।
kaccinna ṡraddhāsyāsāṃ kaccidguhyaṃ na bhāṣasē ॥
I trust the womenfolk are
well cared for and well protected by you.
I trust you are not swayed by their words
and you refrain from share secrets with them!
2.100.50 கச்சிந்நாகவநம் குப்தம் கச்சித்தே ஸந்தி தேநுகா: ।
கச்சிந்ந கணிகாஸ்வாநாம் குஞ்ஜராணாம் ச த்ருப்யஸி ॥
kaccinnāgavanaṃ guptaṃ kaccittē santi dhēnukāḥ ।
kaccinna gaṇikāṡvānāṃ kuñjarāṇāṃ ca tṛpyasi ॥
I trust that your elephant reserves are well guarded,
and enough cow-elephants are maintained,
and that you are not content with the number of
cow-elephants, horses and tuskers!
2.100.51 கச்சித்தர்ஸயஸே நித்யம் மநுஷ்யாணாம் விபூஷிதம் ।
உத்தாயோத்தாய பூர்வாஹ்ணே ராஜபுத்ர மஹாபதே ॥
kacciddarṡayasē nityaṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ vibhūṣitam ।
utthāyōtthāya pūrvāhṇē rājaputra mahāpathē ॥
I trust, O prince of great renown,
getting up early in the morning and getting properly dressed,
you give audience to the people on the major pathways everyday!
2.100.52 கச்சிந்ந ஸர்வே கர்மாந்தா: ப்ரத்யக்ஷாஸ்தேऽவிஸங்கயா ।
ஸர்வே வா புநருத்ஸ்ருஷ்டா மத்யமேவாத்ர காரணம் ॥
kaccinna sarvē karmāntāḥ pratyakṣāstē'viṡaṅkayā ।
sarvē vā punarutsṛṣṭā madhyamēvātra kāraṇam ॥
I trust you are not too easy to approach for your workers
nor avoid contact with them altogether;
the middle course is the best in this matter.
2.100.53 கச்சித்ஸர்வாணி துர்காணி தநதாந்யாயுதோதகை: ।
யந்த்ரேஸ்ச பரிபூர்ணாநி ததா ஸில்பிதநுர்தரை: ॥
kaccitsarvāṇi durgāṇi dhanadhānyāyudhōdakaiḥ ।
yantrēṡca paripūrṇāni tathā ṡilpidhanurdharaiḥ ॥
I trust that all your forts are well stocked
with grains, water, money, weapons,
war machinery, artisans and bowmen!
2.100.54 ஆயஸ்தே விபுல: கச்சித்கச்சிதல்பதரோ வ்யய: ।
அபாத்ரேஷு ந தே கச்சித்கோஸோ கச்சதி ராகவ ॥
āyastē vipulaḥ kaccitkaccidalpatarō vyayaḥ ।
apātrēṣu na tē kaccitkōṡō gacchati rāghava ॥
I trust, O Rāghava, that your revenues are strong
and the expenditure is kept to a minimum,
and no money is wasted on the unworthy!
2.100.55 தேவதார்தே ச பித்ரர்தேப்ராஹ்மணாப்யாகதேஷு ச ।
யோதேஷு மித்ரவர்கேஷு கச்சித்கச்சதி தே வ்யய: ॥
dēvatārthē ca pitrarthēbrāhmaṇābhyāgatēṣu ca ।
yōdhēṣu mitravargēṣu kaccidgacchati tē vyayaḥ ॥
I trust that your money is rightly spent
on the worship of Dēvatas and manes,
on Brāhmaṇas and guests,
on the maintenance of the armed forces
and on supporting the allies!
2.100.56 கச்சிதார்யோ விஸுத்தாத்மா க்ஷாரிதஸ்சாபகர்மணா ।
அப்ருஷ்டஸ்ஸாஸ்த்ரகுஸலைர்ந லோபாத்வத்யதே ஸுசி: ॥
kaccidāryō viṡuddhātmā kṣāritaṡcāpakarmaṇā ।
apṛṣṭaṡṡāstrakuṡalairna lōbhādvadhyatē ṡuciḥ ॥
I trust that no man of noble descent,
of clean character and clean intentions
who is alleged of wrongdoing, is killed
before due interrogation by the experts in Ṡastras,
propelled by ulterior motives!
2.100.57 க்ருஹீதஸ்சைவ ப்ருஷ்டஸ்ச காலே த்ருஷ்டஸ்ஸகாரண: ।
கச்சிந்ந முச்யதே சோரோ தநலோபாந்நரர்ஷப ॥
gṛhītaṡcaiva pṛṣṭaṡca kālē dṛṣṭassakāraṇaḥ ।
kaccinna mucyatē cōrō dhanalōbhānnararṣabha ॥
I trust, O bull among men,
no one caught while committing a theft
and duly prosecuted thereof,
and found to have incriminating evidence against him,
is set free, because of a handsome bribe!
2.100.58 வ்யஸநே கச்சிதாட்யஸ்ய துர்கதஸ்ய ச ராகவ ।
அர்தம் விராகா: பஸ்யந்தி தவாமாத்யா பஹுஸ்ருதா: ॥
vyasanē kaccidāḍhyasya durgatasya ca rāghava ।
arthaṃ virāgāḥ paṡyanti tavāmātyā bahuṡrutāḥ ॥
I trust, O Rāghava, your learned ministers
examine the case of anyone in trouble,
be it rich or poor, without bias!
2.100.59 யாநி மித்யாபிஸஸ்தாநாம் பதந்த்யஸ்ரூணி ராகவ ।
தாநி புத்ராந்பஸூந்க்நந்தி ப்ரீத்யர்தமநுஸாஸத: ॥
yāni mithyābhiṡastānāṃ patantyaṡrūṇi rāghava ।
tāni putrānpaṡūnghnanti prītyarthamanuṡāsataḥ ॥
O Rāghava! The tears that fall from the falsely accused
destroy the sons and cattle of the ruler,
who rules by his whims and fancies!
2.100.60 கச்சித்வ்ருத்தாம்ஸ்ச பாலாம்ஸ்ச வைத்யாமுக்யாம்ஸ்ச ராகவ ।
தாநேந மநஸா வாசா த்ரிபிரேதைர்புபூஷஸே ॥
kaccidvṛddhāṃṡca bālāṃṡca vaidyāmukhyāṃṡca rāghava ।
dānēna manasā vācā tribhirētairbubhūṣasē ॥
I trust, O Rāghava, that you please the
elders, children and the chief among the learned
(in all earnestness,) with all the three;
your mind, your word and your gifts!
2.100.61 கச்சித்குரூம்ஸ்ச வ்ருத்தாம்ஸ்ச தாபஸாந் தேவதாதிதீந் ।
சைத்யாம்ஸ்ச ஸர்வாந்ஸித்தார்தாந்ப்ராஹ்மணாம்ஸ்ச நமஸ்யஸி ॥
kaccidgurūṃṡca vṛddhāṃṡca tāpasān dēvatātithīn ।
caityāṃṡca sarvānsidhdārthānbrāhmaṇāṃṡca namasyasi ॥
I trust that you make your obeisance
to the respected elders, to the aged,
to the gods, to the Tāpasas, to the Brāhmaṇas,
to the places of worship and to all those
who have realized the ends of life!
2.100.62 கச்சிதர்தேந வா தர்மமர்தம் தர்மேண வா புந: ।
உபௌ வா ப்ரீதிலோபேந காமேந ச ந பாதஸே ॥
kaccidarthēna vā dharmamarthaṃ dharmēṇa vā punaḥ ।
ubhau vā prītilōbhēna kāmēna ca na bādhasē ॥
I trust you are not thwarting
Dharma for Artha or Artha for Dharma,
or both of them for the sake of Kāma,
strayed by whims and fancies!
2.100.63 கச்சிதர்தம் ச தர்மம் ச காமம் ச ஜயதாம் வர ।
விபஜ்ய காலே காலஜ்ஞ ஸர்வாந்வரத ஸேவஸே ॥
kaccidarthaṃ ca dharmaṃ ca kāmaṃ ca jayatāṃ vara ।
vibhajya kālē kālajña sarvānvarada sēvasē ॥
I trust, O foremost of the victors,
O man with a sense of time, O grantor of wishes,
That you apportion time appropriately
to pursue all of them; Artha, Dharma and Kāma!
2.100.64 கச்சித்தே ப்ராஹ்மணாஸ்ஸர்ம ஸர்வஸாஸ்த்ரார்தகோவிதா: ।
ஆஸம்ஸந்தே மஹாப்ராஜ்ஞ பௌரஜாநபதைஸ்ஸஹ ॥
kaccittē brāhmaṇāṡṡarma sarvaṡāstrārthakōvidāḥ ।
āṡaṃsantē mahāprājña paurajānapadaissaha ॥
I trust, O supremely sagacious one,
Brāhmaṇas well versed in the essence of all Ṡastras
along with the citizens and the rural folk,
pray for your welfare!
2.100.65-67 நாஸ்திக்யமந்ருதம் க்ரோதம் ப்ரமாதம் தீர்கஸூத்ரதாம் ।
அதர்ஸநம் ஜ்ஞாநவதாமாலஸ்யம் பஞ்சவ்ருத்திதாம் ॥
ஏகசிந்தநமர்தாநாமநர்தஜ்ஞைஸ்ச மந்த்ரணம் ।
நிஸ்சிதாநாமநாரம்பம் மந்த்ரஸ்யாபரிரக்ஷணம் ॥
மங்கலாத்யப்ரயோகம் ச ப்ரத்யுத்தாநம் ச ஸர்வத: ।
கச்சித்வம் வர்ஜயஸ்யேதாந்ராஜதோஷாம்ஸ்சதுர்தஸ ॥
nāstikyamanṛtaṃ krōdhaṃ pramādaṃ dīrghasūtratām ।
adarṡanaṃ jñānavatāmālasyaṃ pañcavṛttitām ॥
ēkacintanamarthānāmanarthajñaiṡca mantraṇam ।
niṡcitānāmanārambhaṃ mantrasyāparirakṣaṇam ॥
maṅgalādyaprayōgaṃ ca pratyutthānaṃ ca sarvataḥ ।
kaccitvaṃ varjayasyētānrājadōṣāṃṡcaturdaṡa ॥
I trust you have overcome the fourteen faults
that trouble a king:
atheism, untruth, anger, heedlessness, procrastination,
failure to frequent the company of the wise,
indolence, indulgence in senses,
strategizing without counsel,
consulting with those who know nothing,
failure to act upon decisions,
failure to guard one’s plans,
remissness in auspicious observances, and
launching of offensive against many foes at once!
2.100.68-70 தஸபஞ்சசதுர்வர்காந்ஸப்தவர்கம் ச தத்த்வத: ।
அஷ்டவர்கம் த்ரிவர்கம் ச வித்யாஸ்திஸ்ரஸ்ச ராகவ ॥
இந்த்ரியாணாம் ஜயம் புத்த்யா ஷாட்குண்யம் தைவமாநுஷம் ।
க்ருத்யம் விம்ஸதிவர்கம் ச ததா ப்ரக்ருதிமண்டலம் ॥
யாத்ராதண்டவிதாநம் ச த்வியோநீ ஸந்திவிக்ரஹௌ ।
கச்சிதேதாந்மஹாப்ராஜ்ஞ யதாவதநுமந்யஸே ॥
daṡapañcacaturvargānsaptavargaṃ ca tattvataḥ ।
aṣṭavargaṃ trivargaṃ ca vidyāstisraṡca rāghava ॥
indriyāṇāṃ jayaṃ buddhyā ṣāḍguṇyaṃ daivamānuṣam ।
kṛtyaṃ viṃṡativargaṃ ca tathā prakṛtimaṇḍalam ॥
yātrādaṇḍavidhānaṃ ca dviyōnī sandhivigrahau ।
kaccidētānmahāprājña yathāvadanumanyasē ॥
I trust, O Rāghava, O supremely sagacious one,
you have gained mastery over the senses,
and a deep understanding of the list of three,
list of four, list of five, list of six, list of seven,
list of eight, list of ten, list of twenty one,
the three Vidyas, Prakṛtis, Maṇdalas,
the travails caused by humans and nature’s forces
the procedures of offense and attack,
and the two tactics of compromise and stand-off,
and practice them accordingly. In these contemporary times, we are very familiar with lists like ‘Seven habits of highly effective people’, ‘four principles of biomedical ethics’ and so on.
Indian culture is also big on consolidating the timeless wisdom into concise lists. Eight steps of Yoga of Patañjali and eight fold path of Buddha are a couple of well known examples.
Several such lists are mentioned in the Ṡlōkas here. Scholars differ on what these lists exactly are. But here is a collection of plausible lists:
List of three: Dharma, Artha, Kāma.
List of four: Diplomacy, material exchange, threat of non-cooperation and war.
List of five: Enemy, money, women, belligerence and wrongdoing.
List of six:: Compromise, stand-off, offense, waiting for opportune time, playing by the ear and taking refuge with a stronger force.
List of seven: King, ministers, realm, fort, treasury, army and allies.
List of eight: Agriculture, trade, forts, bridges, elephants, mines, revenue collection and construction of new dwellings.
List of ten:Obsessive hunting, compulsive gambling, sleeping during the day time, finding fault with others, indulgence in women, becoming alcoholic, wandering off, indulgence in dance, indulgence in singing and indulgence in music.
List of twenty one:: This refers to twenty one types of enemies, with whom compromise is not a viable option. They are the ones who are immature, who are too old (having nothing to lose), who are suffering from long term illness, who have alienated one’s own kith and kin, who are cowards, who are surrounded by cowards, who are misers, who are surrounded by misers, who do not have the trust of their own ministers and officers, who indulge in pleasurable activities excessively, who change their mind willy-nilly, who deride Dēvas and Brāhmaṇas, who are suffering from congenital defects, who leave everything to fate, whose realm is undergoing economic depression, whose armies are in troubles, who are in exile, who have too many enemies, who are haunted by bad luck, who do not adhere to truth and who do not adhere to Dharma.
Three Vidyas:: The knowledge of Vedas, economy and statecraft.
Prakṛtis:: Ministers, state, forts, treasury and justice.
Mandalas:: The surrounding states with twelve different types of relationships.
2.100.71 மந்த்ரிபிஸ்த்வம் யதோத்திஷ்டைஸ்சதுர்பிஸ்த்ரிபிரேவ வா ।
கச்சித்ஸமஸ்தைர்வ்யஸ்தைஸ்ச மந்த்ரம் மந்த்ரயஸே மித: ॥
mantribhistvaṃ yathōddiṣṭaiṡcaturbhistribhirēva vā ।
kaccitsamastairvyastaiṡca mantraṃ mantrayasē mithaḥ ॥
I trust that you consult in secret
with three or four of your ministers,
possessed of the necessary qualities,
individually as well as with all at once!
2.100.72 கச்சித்தே ஸபலா வேதா: கச்சித்தே ஸபலா: க்ரியா: ।
கச்சித்தே ஸபலா தாரா: கச்சித்தே ஸபலம் ஸ்ருதம் ॥
kaccittē saphalā vēdāḥ kaccittē saphalāḥ kriyāḥ ।
kaccittē saphalā dārāḥ kaccittē saphalaṃ ṡrutam ॥
I trust that the Vedas you have studied,
the enterprises you have launched,
the wives you have wedded and
the knowledge you have acquired
are serving you well!
2.100.73 கச்சிதேஷைவ தே புத்திர்யதோக்தா மம ராகவ ।
ஆயுஷ்யா ச யஸஸ்யா ச தர்மகாமார்த ஸம்ஹிதா ॥
kaccidēṣaiva tē buddhiryathōktā mama rāghava ।
āyuṣyā ca yaṡasyā ca dharmakāmārtha saṃhitā ॥
I trust, O Rāghava, that your thinking is
along the lines of what I said
which would lead you to long life, great renown
and also to Dharma, Artha and Kāma!
2.100.74 யாம் வ்ருத்திம் வர்ததே தாதோ யாம் ச ந: ப்ரபிதாமஹா: ।
தாம் வ்ருத்திம் வர்தஸே கச்சித்யாச ஸத்பதகா ஸுபா ॥
yāṃ vṛttiṃ vartatē tātō yāṃ ca naḥ prapitāmahāḥ ।
tāṃ vṛttiṃ vartasē kaccidyāca satpathagā ṡubhā ॥
I trust you tread in the same illustrative and gainly path
that our father and of our forefathers have trodden.
2.100.75 கச்சித்ஸ்வாது க்ருதம் போஜ்யமேகோ நாஸ்நாஸி ராகவ ।
கச்சிதாஸம்ஸமாநேப்யோ மித்ரேப்யஸ்ஸம்ப்ரயச்சஸி ॥
kaccitsvādu kṛtaṃ bhōjyamēkō nāṡnāsi rāghava ।
kaccidāṡaṃsamānēbhyō mitrēbhyassamprayacchasi ॥
I trust, O Rāghava, that you do not
eat tasty food all by yourself,
but share it with friends
who would enjoy it equally.
2.100.76 ராஜா து தர்மேண ஹி பாலயித்வா
மஹாமதிர்தண்டதர: ப்ரஜாநாம் ।
அவாப்ய க்ருத்ஸ்நாம் வஸுதாம் யதாவ-
திதஸ்ச்யுதஸ்ஸ்வர்கமுபைதி வித்வாந் ॥
rājā tu dharmēṇa hi pālayitvā
mahāmatirdaṇḍadharaḥ prajānām ।
avāpya kṛtsnāṃ vasudhāṃ yathāva-
ditaṡcyutassvargamupaiti vidvān ॥
An astute and learned king,
who governs and cares for the people
in accordance with Dharma,
would expand his regime to the entire earth
just as a matter of consequence,
and at the end, reach heaven, assuredly!
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே
வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே
ஸததமஸ்ஸர்க: ।
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē
vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē
ṡatatamassargaḥ ।
Thus concludes the one hundredth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
