Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 96
In this Sarga, Rāma relaxes along with Seetā on the mountain side, when he feels something unusual, seeing dust and din rise, and seeing the deer, elephants and other animals running in all directions in fear. He asks Lakshmaṇa to find out the reason.
Lakshmaṇa climbs on a Sāla tree and sees the great army towards the north. He recognizes the army to be that of Bharata from the flag with the emblem of Kōvidāra tree flying on the chariot.
He becomes outraged and says that he will kill Bharata, his army, Kaikēyee, her attendants and relations, and will bring the earth back under the rule of Rāma.
2.96.1 தாம் ததா தர்ஸயித்வா து
மைதிலீம் கிரிநிம்நகாம் ।
நிஷஸாத கிரிப்ரஸ்தே
ஸீதாம் மாம்ஸேந சந்தயந் ॥
tāṃ tathā darṡayitvā tu
maithilīṃ girinimnagām ।
niṣasāda giriprasthē
sītāṃ māṃsēna chandayan ॥
Having thus shown the princess of Mithilā the mountain stream,
he sat on the mountain-side
refreshing Seetā with the choicest meat.
2.96.2 இதம் மேத்யமிதம் ஸ்வாது
நிஷ்டப்தமிதமக்நிநா ।
ஏவமாஸ்தே ஸ தர்மாத்மா
ஸீதயா ஸஹ ராகவ: ॥
idaṃ mēdhyamidaṃ svādu
niṣṭaptamidamagninā ।
ēvamāstē sa dharmātmā
sītayā saha rāghavaḥ ॥
Rāghava, the Dharmātma was thus
passing time with Seetā, saying (about the meat):
‘this is good, this is delicious, this is roasted well’
2.96.3 ததா தத்ராऽஸதஸ்தஸ்ய
பரதஸ்யோபயாயிந: ।
ஸைந்யரேணுஸ்ச ஸப்தஸ்ச
ப்ராதுராஸ்தாம் நபஸ்ப்ருஸௌ ॥
tathā tatrā'satastasya
bharatasyōpayāyinaḥ ।
sainyarēṇuṡca ṡabdaṡca
prādurāstāṃ nabhaspṛṡau ॥
As he sat thus, there rose to the sky
the dust and din of the army of Bharata.
2.96.4 ஏதஸ்மிந்நந்தரே த்ரஸ்தா:
ஸப்தேந மஹதா தத: ।
அர்திதா யூதபா மத்தா:
ஸயூதா துத்ருவுர்திஸ: ॥
ētasminnantarē trastāḥ
ṡabdēna mahatā tataḥ ।
arditā yūthapā mattāḥ
sayūthā dudruvurdiṡaḥ ॥
At the same time, the haughty leaders of the herds,
frightened by the great noise, fled from there
in terror in all directions along with their herds.
2.96.5 ஸ தம் ஸைந்யஸமுத்தூதம்
ஸப்தம் ஸுஸ்ராவ ராகவ: ।
தாம்ஸ்ச விப்ரத்ருதாந்ஸர்வாந்
யூதபாநந்வவைக்ஷத ॥
sa taṃ sainyasamuddhūtaṃ
ṡabdaṃ ṡuṡrāva rāghavaḥ ।
tāṃṡca vipradrutānsarvān
yūthapānanvavaikṣata ॥
Rāghava heard that noise of the army and
saw those leaders of the herds fleeing.
2.96.6 தாம்ஸ்ச வித்ருவதோ த்ருஷ்ட்வா
தம் ச ஸ்ருத்வா ச நிஸ்வநம் ।
உவாச ராமஸ்ஸௌமித்ரிம்
லக்ஷ்மணம் தீப்ததேஜஸம் ॥
tāṃṡca vidruvatō dṛṣṭvā
taṃ ca ṡrutvā ca nisvanam ।
uvāca rāmassaumitriṃ
lakṣmaṇaṃ dīptatējasam ॥
Seeing them flee and hearing that great din,
Rāma said to Lakshmaṇa, son of Sumitrā, of scorching brilliance:
2.96.7 ஹந்த லக்ஷ்மண பஸ்யேஹ
ஸுமித்ராஸுப்ரஜாஸ்த்வயா ।
பீமஸ்தநிதகம்பீர:
துமுல: ஸ்ரூயதே ஸ்வந: ॥
hanta lakṣmaṇa paṡyēha
sumitrāsuprajāstvayā ।
bhīmastanitagambhīraḥ
tumulaḥ ṡrūyatē svanaḥ ॥
What! Look Lakshmaṇa, O prized son of Sumitrā,
we hear this frightening, disturbing din,
which is like the rumbling of thunderous clouds!
2.96.8 கஜயூதாநி வாऽரண்யே
மஹிஷா வா மஹாவநே ।
வித்ராஸிதா ம்ருகாஸ்ஸிம்ஹை:
ஸஹஸா ப்ரத்ருதா திஸ: ॥
gajayūthāni vā'raṇyē
mahiṣā vā mahāvanē ।
vitrāsitā mṛgāssiṃhaiḥ
sahasā pradrutā diṡaḥ ॥
Herds of elephants of the forest,
buffaloes of the wild, deer and even lions
flee in all directions in fear.
2.96.9 ராஜா வா ராஜபுத்ரோ வா
ம்ருகயாமடதே வநே ।
அந்யத்வா ஸ்வாபதம் கிஞ்சித்
ஸௌமித்ரே ஜ்ஞாதுமர்ஹஸி ॥
rājā vā rājaputrō vā
mṛgayāmaṭatē vanē ।
anyadvā ṡvāpadaṃ kiñcit
saumitrē jñātumarhasi ॥
Is it because of a king or a prince coming hunting in the Vana,
or because of any kind of dreaded beast?
O son of Sumitrā, please check!
2.96.10 ஸுதுஸ்சரோ கிரிஸ்சாயம்
பக்ஷிணாமபி லக்ஷ்மண ।
ஸர்வமேதத்யதாதத்த்வம்
அசிராத் ஜ்ஞாதுமர்ஹஸி ॥
suduṡcarō giriṡcāyaṃ
pakṣiṇāmapi lakṣmaṇa ।
sarvamētadyathātattvam
acirāt jñātumarhasi ॥
This mountain is difficult to access even for birds.
O Lakshmaṇa, find out quickly and exactly
what this is all about!
2.96.11 ஸ லக்ஷ்மணஸ்ஸந்த்வரித:
ஸாலமாருஹ்ய புஷ்பிதம் ।
ப்ரேக்ஷமாணோ திஸஸ்ஸர்வா:
பூர்வாம் திஸமுதைக்ஷத ॥
sa lakṣmaṇassantvaritaḥ
sālamāruhya puṣpitam ।
prēkṣamāṇō diṡassarvāḥ
pūrvāṃ diṡamudaikṣata ॥
Lakshmaṇa immediately hastened and
climbed up a Sāla tree that was in bloom.
He quickly glanced in all directions
and then carefully scanned the east.
2.96.12 உதங்முக: ப்ரேக்ஷமாணோ
ததர்ஸ மஹதீம் சமூம் ।
ரதாஸ்வகஜஸம்பாதாம்
யத்தைர்யுக்தாம் பதாதிபி: ॥
udaṅmukhaḥ prēkṣamāṇō
dadarṡa mahatīṃ camūm ।
rathāṡvagajasambādhāṃ
yattairyuktāṃ padātibhiḥ ॥
Then he turned to the north and saw the great army,
complete with chariots, horses and elephants
along with foot soldiers in full attention.
2.96.13 தாமஸ்வகஜஸம்பூர்ணாம்
ரதத்வஜவிபூஷிதாம் ।
ஸஸம்ஸ ஸேநாம் ராமாய
வசநம் சேதமப்ரவீத் ॥
tāmaṡvagajasampūrṇāṃ
rathadhvajavibhūṣitām ।
ṡaṡaṃsa sēnāṃ rāmāya
vacanaṃ cēdamabravīt ॥
He told Rāma about the army that was complete with
horses, elephants and chariots flying pennants.
He also told him:
2.96.14 அக்நிம் ஸம்ஸமயத்வார்ய:
ஸீதா ச பஜதாம் குஹாம் ।
ஸஜ்யம் குருஷ்வ சாபம் ச
ஸராம்ஸ்ச கவசம் ததா ॥
agniṃ saṃṡamayatvāryaḥ
sītā ca bhajatāṃ guhām ।
sajyaṃ kuruṣva cāpaṃ ca
ṡarāṃṡca kavacaṃ tathā ॥
Please put out the fire, O noble one,
and let Seetā retire into the cave.
String the bow and put on the quiver and armor.
2.96.15 தம் ராம: புருஷவ்யாக்ரோ
லக்ஷ்மணம் ப்ரத்யுவாச ஹ ।
அங்காவேக்ஷஸ்வ ஸௌமித்ரே
கஸ்யேமாம் மந்யஸே சமூம் ॥
taṃ rāmaḥ puruṣavyāghrō
lakṣmaṇaṃ pratyuvāca ha ।
aṅgāvēkṣasva saumitrē
kasyēmāṃ manyasē camūm ॥
In response, Rāma, the tiger among men, said to Lakshmaṇa:
O son of Sumitrā! Look carefully, whose army do you think it is?
2.96.16 ஏவமுக்தஸ்து ராமேண
லக்ஷ்மணோ வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ।
திதக்ஷந்நிவ தாம் ஸேநாம்
ருஷித: பாவகோ யதா ॥
ēvamuktastu rāmēṇa
lakṣmaṇō vākyamabravīt ।
didhakṣanniva tāṃ sēnāṃ
ruṣitaḥ pāvakō yathā ॥
Thus asked, Lakshmaṇa, raging like a fire
that could burn that army, replied saying:
2.96.17 ஸம்பந்நம் ராஜ்யமிச்சம்ஸ்து
வ்யக்தம் ப்ராப்யாபிஷேசநம் ।
ஆவாம் ஹந்தும் ஸமப்யேதி
கைகேய்யா பரதஸ்ஸுத: ॥
sampannaṃ rājyamicchaṃstu
vyaktaṃ prāpyābhiṣēcanam ।
āvāṃ hantuṃ samabhyēti
kaikēyyā bharatassutaḥ ॥
Kaikēyee’s son, Bharata, having been crowned,
and wishing to further his reign,
is coming, clearly, to kill us!
2.96.18 ஏஷ வை ஸுமஹாஞ்ச்ரீமாந்
விடபீ ஸம்ப்ரகாஸதே ।
விராஜத்யுத்கதஸ்கந்த:
கோவிதாரத்வஜோ ரதே ॥
ēṣa vai sumahāñchrīmān
viṭapī samprakāṡatē ।
virājatyudgataskandha:
kōvidāradhvajō rathē ॥
On top of the chariot flies
the flag with the shining emblem of
the rich and magnificent Kōvidāra tree
with the trunk clearly visible.
2.96.19 அஸௌ ஹி ஸுமஹாஸ்கந்தோ
விடபீ ச மஹாத்ரும: ।
விராஜதே மஹாஸைந்யே
கோவிதாரத்வஜோ ரதே ॥
asau hi sumahāskandhō
viṭapī ca mahādrumaḥ ।
virājatē mahāsainyē
kōvidāradhvajō rathē ॥
This flag, with the emblem of the magnificent Kōvidāra tree,
with majestic trunk and many branches, on the chariot,
is shining in the midst of a great army.
2.96.20 பஜந்த்யேதே யதாகாமம்
அஸ்வாநாருஹ்ய ஸீக்ரகாந் ।
ஏதே ப்ராஜந்தி ஸம்ஹ்ருஷ்டா
கஜாநாருஹ்ய ஸாதிந: ॥
bhajantyētē yathākāmam
aṡvānāruhya ṡīghragān ।
ētē bhrājanti saṃhṛṣṭā
gajānāruhya sādinaḥ ॥
Men, mounted on swift horses, are hailing the flag, unrestrained.
Men, riding on elephants, are jubilant.
2.96.21 க்ருஹீததநுஷௌ சாவாம்
கிரிம் வீர ஸ்ரயாவஹை ।
அதவேஹைவ திஷ்டாவ:
ஸந்நத்தாவுத்யதாயுதௌ ॥
gṛhītadhanuṣau cāvāṃ
giriṃ vīra ṡrayāvahai ।
athavēhaiva tiṣṭhāvaḥ
sannaddhāvudyatāyudhau ॥
Let us, O Veera, be armed with the bow and ready for the fray.
We can take position on the mountain or stay right here.
2.96.22 அபி நௌ வஸமாகச்சேத்
கோவிதாரத்வஜோ ரணே ।
அபி த்ரக்ஷ்யாமி பரதம்
யத்க்ருதே வ்யஸநம் மஹத் ।
த்வயா ராகவ ஸம்ப்ராப்தம்
ஸீதயா ச மயா ததா ॥
api nau vaṡamāgacchēt
kōvidāradhvajō raṇē ।
api drakṣyāmi bharataṃ
yatkṛtē vyasanaṃ mahat ।
tvayā rāghava samprāptaṃ
sītayā ca mayā tathā ॥
How I wish, O Rāghava, I could see Bharata,
who has been the cause of all
your woes, of Seetā’s and mine,
and that the flag with (the emblem of) Kōvidāra
would fall into our hands in battle!
2.96.23 யந்நிமித்தம் பவாந்ராஜ்யாத்
ச்யுதோ ராகவஸாஸ்வதாத் ॥
ஸம்ப்ராப்தோऽயமரிர்வீர
பரதோ வத்ய ஏவ மே ।
yannimittaṃ bhavānrājyāt
cyutō rāghavaṡāṡvatāt ॥
samprāptō'yamarirvīra
bharatō vadhya ēva mē ।
Bharata, because of whom you have been
permanently ousted from the kingdom,
is here now as a foe, to be killed by me.
2.96.24 பரதஸ்ய வதே தோஷம்
நாஹம் பஸ்யாமி ராகவ ।
பூர்வாபகாரிணம் ஹத்வா
ந ஹ்யதர்மேண யுஜ்யதே ॥
bharatasya vadhē dōṣaṃ
nāhaṃ paṡyāmi rāghava ।
pūrvāpakāriṇaṃ hatvā
na hyadharmēṇa yujyatē ॥
And, O Rāghava, I don’t see anything wrong in killing Bharata.
One would not incur the sin against Dharma
by killing someone who has done harm.
2.96.25 பூர்வாபகாரீ பரத:
த்யக்ததர்மஸ்ச ராகவ ।
ஏதஸ்மிந்நிஹதே க்ருத்ஸ்நாம்
அநுஸாதி வஸுந்தராம் ॥
pūrvāpakārī bharataḥ
tyaktadharmaṡca rāghava ।
ētasminnihatē kṛtsnām
anuṡādhi vasundharām ॥
O Rāghava! Bharata gave up Dharma and harmed you.
See him being killed and you rule the entire earth.
2.96.26 அத்ய புத்ரம் ஹதம் ஸம்க்யே
கைகேயீ ராஜ்யகாமுகா ।
மயா பஸ்யேத்ஸுது:கார்தா
ஹஸ்திபக்நமிவ த்ருமம் ॥
adya putraṃ hataṃ saṃkhyē
kaikēyī rājyakāmukā ।
mayā paṡyētsuduḥkhārtā
hastibhagnamiva drumam ॥
Today, Kaikēyee, who wanted the kingdom,
shall be harrowed by grief,
seeing her son killed in battle by me,
like a tree snapped by an elephant.
2.96.27 கைகேயீம் ச வதிஷ்யாமி
ஸாநுபந்தாம் ஸபாந்தவாம் ।
கலுஷேணாத்ய மஹதா
மேதிநீ பரிமுச்யதாம் ॥
kaikēyīṃ ca vadhiṣyāmi
sānubandhāṃ sabāndhavām ।
kaluṣēṇādya mahatā
mēdinī parimucyatām ॥
I shall also kill Kaikēyee along with her attendants and relations.
Let the earth be relieved of its foul blot today.
2.96.28 அத்யேமம் ஸம்யதம் க்ரோதம்
அஸத்காரம் ச மாநத ।
மோக்ஷ்யாமி ஸத்ருஸைந்யேஷு
கக்ஷேஷ்விவ ஹுதாஸநம் ॥
adyēmaṃ saṃyataṃ krōdham
asatkāraṃ ca mānada ।
mōkṣyāmi ṡatrusainyēṣu
kakṣēṣviva hutāṡanam ॥
O you, who protect our dignity!
Today, I shall unleash my outrage over the insult
that has been suppressed so long,
on the enemy forces, like a fire on bone-dry thickets!
2.96.29 அத்யைதச்சித்ரகூடஸ்ய
காநநம் நிஸிதைஸ்ஸரை: ।
சிந்தஞ்சத்ருஸரீராணி
கரிஷ்யே ஸோணிதோக்ஷிதம் ॥
adyaitacchitrakūṭasya
kānanaṃ niṡitaiṡṡaraiḥ ।
chindañcatruṡarīrāṇi
kariṣyē ṡōṇitōkṣitam ॥
Today, I shall drench this forest of Citrakūṭa with blood,
rending the bodies of the enemy forces with sharp arrows.
2.96.30 ஸரைர்நிர்பிந்நஹ்ருதயாந்
குஞ்ஜராம்ஸ்துரகாம்ஸ்ததா ।
ஸ்வாபதா: பரிகர்ஷந்து
நராம்ஸ்ச நிஹதாந்மயா ॥
ṡarairnirbhinnahṛdayān
kuñjarāṃsturagāṃstathā ।
ṡvāpadāḥ parikarṣantu
narāṃṡca nihatānmayā ॥
Let the wild beasts drag about here and there,
the elephants and horses whose hearts are
rent by my arrows and the men who are slain by me.
2.96.31 ஸராணாம் தநுஷஸ்சாஹம்
அந்ருணோऽஸ்மிந்மஹாவநே ।
ஸஸைந்யம் பரதம் ஹத்வா
பவிஷ்யாமி ந ஸம்ஸய: ॥
ṡarāṇāṃ dhanuṣaṡcāham
anṛṇō'sminmahāvanē ।
sasainyaṃ bharataṃ hatvā
bhaviṣyāmi na saṃṡayaḥ ॥
Having slain Bharata along with his army in this great Vana,
I shall, without a doubt, become freed
from the debt to these arrows and bow.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே ஷண்ணவதிதமஸ்ஸர்க: ।
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē ṣaṇṇavatitamassargaḥ ।
Thus concludes the ninety sixth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
