Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 91
In this Sarga, Bharadwāja feasts Bharata, his retinue and his entire army. He uses his yogic powers to invoke the Dēvatas to come and prepare everything needed to serve that huge army. The Dēvatas, instantly transform that Āṡrama into a dreamland with lawns, buildings, rivers, pools, liquor, food, women, and everything one would ever want.
The army revels in all of it so much that, in their inebriated state of ecstasy, they declare ‘This is heaven! We are not going to Ayōdhyā, nor to Daṇḍaka!
2.91.1 க்ருதபுத்திம் நிவாஸாய தத்ரைவ ஸ முநிஸ்ததா ।
பரதம் கைகயீபுத்ரமாதித்யேநந்யமந்த்ரயத் ॥
kṛtabuddhiṃ nivāsāya tatraiva sa munistadā ।
bharataṃ kaikayīputramātithyēnanyamantrayat ॥
Seeing Bharata agree to stay there,
the Muni extended a formal invitation
to that son of Kaikēyee, to be his guest.
2.91.2 அப்ரவீத்பரதஸ்த்வேநம் நந்விதம் பவதா க்ருதம் ।
பாத்யமர்க்யம் ததாऽதித்யம் வநே யதுபபத்யதே ॥
abravīdbharatastvēnaṃ nanvidaṃ bhavatā kṛtam ।
pādyamarghyaṃ tathā'tithyaṃ vanē yadupapadyatē ॥
Bharata responded saying:
‘You have already treated us well with
water to wash, water to drink
and whatever is available in the Vana.’
2.91.3 அதோவாச பரத்வாஜோ பரதம் ப்ரஹஸந்நிவ ।
ஜாநே த்வாம் ப்ரீதிஸம்யுக்தம் துஷ்யேஸ்த்வம் யேந கேநசித் ॥
athōvāca bharadvājō bharataṃ prahasanniva ।
jānē tvāṃ prītisaṃyuktaṃ tuṣyēstvaṃ yēna kēnacit ॥
Smiling, Bharadwāja said to Bharata:
‘I know you are easily pleased, and
will be satisfied with whatever is offered!’
2.91.4 ஸேநாயாஸ்து தவைதஸ்யா: கர்துமிச்சாமி போஜநம் ।
மம ப்ரீதிர்யதாரூபா ததார்ஹோ மநுஜர்ஷப ॥
sēnāyāstu tavaitasyāḥ kartumicchāmi bhōjanam ।
mama prītiryathārūpā tathārhō manujarṣabha ॥
I would like to feast all of your army.
May you accept, O bull among men,
what my affection prompts me to offer.
2.91.5 கிமர்தம் சாபி நிக்ஷிப்ய தூரே பலமிஹாகத: ।
கஸ்மாந்நேஹோபயாதோऽஸி ஸபல: புருஷர்ஷப: ॥
kimarthaṃ cāpi nikṣipya dūrē balamihāgataḥ ।
kasmānnēhōpayātō'si sabalaḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ ॥
O bull among men! Why did you station your army
at a distance before coming here?
Why did you not come along with your army?
2.91.6 பரத: ப்ரத்யுவாசேதம் ப்ராஞ்ஜலிஸ்தம் தபோதநம் ।
ஸஸைந்யோ நோபயாதோऽஸ்மி பகவந்பகவத்பயாத் ॥
bharataḥ pratyuvācēdaṃ prāñjalistaṃ tapōdhanam ।
sasainyō nōpayātō'smi bhagavanbhagavadbhayāt ॥
Bharata, with joined palms, responded
to that man, rich with Tapa:
‘O Bhagawan! I did not bring the army
for the fear of you, the venerable one!’
2.91.7 ராஜ்ஞா ச பகவந்நித்யம் ராஜபுத்ரேண வா ஸதா ।
யத்நத: பரிஹர்தவ்யா விஷயேஷு தபஸ்விந: ॥
rājñā ca bhagavannityaṃ rājaputrēṇa vā sadā ।
yatnataḥ parihartavyā viṣayēṣu tapasvinaḥ ॥
Kings and princes must take great care to see that
Tapasvis living in the realm are spared intrusion.
2.91.8 வாஜிமுக்யா மநுஷ்யாஸ்ச மத்தாஸ்ச வரவாரணா: ।
ப்ரச்சாத்ய பகவந்பூமிம் மஹதீமநுயாந்தி மாம் ॥
vājimukhyā manuṣyāṡca mattāṡca varavāraṇāḥ ।
pracchādya bhagavanbhūmiṃ mahatīmanuyānti mām ॥
O Bhagawan! The best of horses, the best of men,
and the best of the elephants that are in rut,
that cover a vast area of land followed me.
2.91.9 தே வ்ருக்ஷாநுதகம் பூமிமாஸ்ரமேஷூடஜாம் ஸ்ததா ।
ந ஹிம்ஸ்யுரிதி தேநாऽஹமேக ஏவ ஸமாகத: ॥
tē vṛkṣānudakaṃ bhūmimāṡramēṣūṭajāṃ stathā ।
na hiṃsyuriti tēnā'hamēka ēva samāgataḥ ॥
I was worried that their presence might damage the
trees, waters, grounds and huts of the Āṡrama.
Hence, I came alone here, by myself.
2.91.10 ஆநீயதாமிதஸ்ஸேநேத்யாஜ்ஞப்த: பரமர்ஷிணா ।
ததஸ்து சக்ரே பரதஸ்ஸேநாயாஸ்ஸமுபாகமம் ॥
ānīyatāmitassēnētyājñaptaḥ paramarṣiṇā ।
tatastu cakrē bharatassēnāyāssamupāgamam ॥
Then, with that great Ṛshi commanding,
‘Bring the army here’,
Bharata arranged for the army to be there.
2.91.11 அக்நிஸாலாம் ப்ரவிஸ்யாத பீத்வாऽப: பரிம்ருஜ்ய ச ।
ஆதித்யஸ்ய க்ரியாஹேதோர்விஸ்வகர்மாணமாஹ்வயத் ॥
agniṡālāṃ praviṡyātha pītvā'paḥ parimṛjya ca ।
ātithyasya kriyāhētōrviṡvakarmāṇamāhvayat ॥
He then went into the fire-chamber,
took a ceremonial sip of water,
cleansed himself ceremoniously and
invoked Viṡwakarma to make
arrangements for the hospitality.
2.91.12 ஆஹ்வயே விஸ்வகர்மாணமஹம் த்வஷ்டாரமேவ ச ।
ஆதித்யம் கர்துமிச்சாமி தத்ர மே ஸம்விதீயதாம் ॥
āhvayē viṡvakarmāṇamahaṃ tvaṣṭāramēva ca ।
ātithyaṃ kartumiccāmi tatra mē saṃvidhīyatām ॥
I invoke Viṡwakarma, the celestial builder!
I like to provide hospitality,
May all the arrangements be made!
2.91.13 ஆஹ்வயே லோகபாலாம்ஸ்த்ரீந் தேவாந் ஸக்ரமுகாம்ஸ்ததா ।
ஆதித்யம் கர்துமிச்சாமி தத்ர மே ஸம்விதீயதாம் ॥
āhvayē lōkapālāṃstrīn dēvān ṡakramukhāṃstathā ।
ātithyaṃ kartumicchāmi tatra mē saṃvidhīyatām ॥
I invoke the three Dēvas headed by Indra,
the governors of the worlds!
I would like to provide hospitality,
May all the arrangements be made!
2.91.14 ப்ராக்ஸ்ரோதஸஸ்ச யா நத்ய: ப்ரத்யக்ஸ்ரோதஸ ஏவ ச ।
ப்ருதிவ்யாமந்தரிக்ஷே ச ஸமாயாந்த்வத்ய ஸர்வஸ: ॥
prāksrōtasaṡca yā nadyaḥ pratyaksrōtasa ēva ca ।
pṛthivyāmantarikṣē ca samāyāntvadya sarvaṡaḥ ॥
May all the rivers on earth and in the heavens,
that flow east and that flow west,
present themselves here from everywhere!
2.91.15 அந்யா ஸ்ரவந்து மைரேயம் ஸுராமந்யாஸ்ஸுவிஷ்டிதாம் ।
அபராஸ்சோதகம் ஸீதமிக்ஷுகாண்டரஸோபமம் ॥
anyā sravantu mairēyaṃ surāmanyāssuviṣṭhitām ।
aparāṡcōdakaṃ ṡītamikṣukāṇḍarasōpamam ॥
May some of them bear date-wine,
others well brewed liquor;
while yet others carry cool water
sweet as the juice of the sugarcane!
2.91.16 ஆஹ்வயே தேவகந்தர்வாந்விஸ்வாவஸுஹஹாஹுஹூந் ।
ததைவாப்ஸரஸோ தேவீர்கந்தர்வீஸ்சாபி ஸர்வஸ: ॥
āhvayē dēvagandharvānviṡvāvasuhahāhuhūn ।
tathaivāpsarasō dēvīrgandharvīṡcāpi sarvaṡaḥ ॥
I invoke the celestial Gandharvas, Viṡwāvasu, Hahā and Huhū,
and also Apsarasas from everywhere
that belong to Dēvas and Gandharvas.
2.91.17 க்ருதாசீமத விஸ்வாசீம் மிஸ்ரகேஸீமலம்புஸாம் ।
நாகதந்தாம் ச ஹேமாம் ச ஹிமாமத்ரிக்ருதஸ்தலாம் ॥
ghṛtācīmatha viṡvācīṃ miṡrakēṡīmalaṃbusām ।
nāgadantāṃ ca hēmāṃ ca himāmadrikṛtasthalām ॥
(I invite) Ghṛtaci, Viṡvāci, Miṡrakēsi,
Ālambusa, Nāgadanta, Hēma and
Hima who dwells on the mountain.
2.91.18 ஸக்ரம் யாஸ்சோபதிஷ்டந்தி ப்ரஹ்மாணம் யாஸ்ச யோஷித: ।
ஸர்வாஸ்தும்புருணா ஸார்தமஹ்வயே ஸபரிச்சதா: ॥
ṡakraṃ yāṡcōpatiṣṭhanti brahmāṇaṃ yāṡca yōṣitaḥ ।
sarvāstumburuṇā sārthamahvayē saparicchadāḥ ॥
I call upon all those women who wait upon Indra
and those who wait upon Brahma
to come in the company of Tumburu
and bring their instruments with them.
2.91.19 வநம் குருஷு யத்திவ்யம் வாஸோபூஷணபத்ரவத் ।
திவ்யநாரீபலம் ஸஸ்வத்தத்கௌபேரமிஹைது ச ॥
vanaṃ kuruṣu yaddivyaṃ vāsōbhūṣaṇapatravat ।
divyanārīphalaṃ ṡaṡvattatkaubēramihaitu ca ॥
May the celestial pleasance of the
Uttara-Kuru country, belonging to Kubēra,
which always has trees for garments, leaves for ornaments,
and celestial women for fruit, be present here.
2.91.20-21 இஹ மே பகவாந் ஸோமோ விதத்தாமந்நமுத்தமம் ।
பக்ஷ்யம்போஜ்யம் ச சோஷ்யம் ச லேஹ்யம் ச விவிதம் பஹு ॥
விசித்ராணி ச மால்யாநி பாதபப்ரச்யுதாநி ச ।
ராதீநி ச பேயாநி மாம்ஸாநி விவிதாநி ச ॥
iha mē bhagavān sōmō vidhattāmannamuttamam ।
bhakṣyaṃbhōjyaṃ ca cōṣyaṃ ca lēhyaṃ ca vividhaṃ bahu ॥
vicitrāṇi ca mālyāni pādapapracyutāni ca ।
rādīni ca pēyāni māṃsāni vividhāni ca ॥
May Bhagawan Sōma arrange here, the best food of various
textures, that can be munched, chewed, swallowed and licked;
as well as a variety of flowers,
that fell from the trees by themselves,
drinks including liquor, and different kinds of meat.
2.91.22 ஏவம் ஸமாதிநா யுக்தஸ்தேஜஸாऽப்ரதிமேந ச ।
ஸீக்ஷாஸ்வரஸமாயுக்தம் தபஸா சாப்ரவீந்முநி: ॥
ēvaṃ samādhinā yuktastējasā'pratimēna ca ।
ṡīkṣāsvarasamāyuktaṃ tapasā cābravīnmuniḥ ॥
That Muni, of unparalleled radiance,
becoming one with the powers of the universe,
invoked thus with his Tapa and
with intonations as laid out in Ṡiksha.
Ṡiksha is one of the six Vēdāṅgas.
2.91.23 மநஸா த்யாயதஸ்தஸ்ய ப்ராங்முகஸ்ய க்ருதாஞ்ஜலே: ।
ஆஜக்முஸ்தாநி ஸர்வாணி தைவதாநி ப்ருதக்ப்ருதக் ॥
manasā dhyāyatastasya prāṅmukhasya kṛtāñjalēḥ ।
ājagmustāni sarvāṇi daivatāni pṛthakpṛthak ॥
As he thus invoked in his mind,
facing east with joined palms,
all the Dēvatas arrived one by one.
2.91.24 மலயம் தர்துரம் சைவ ததஸ்ஸ்வேதநுதோऽநில: ।
உபஸ்ப்ருஸ்ய வவௌ யுக்த்யா ஸுப்ரியாத்மா ஸுகஸ்ஸிவ: ॥
malayaṃ darduraṃ caiva tatassvēdanudō'nilaḥ ।
upaspṛṡya vavau yuktyā supriyātmā sukhaṡṡivaḥ ॥
A gentle breeze passing over the
mountains of Malaya and Dardura,
blew, pleasant, comforting and auspicious,
warding off perspiration by its touch. The next fifteen Ṡlōkas paint a scene that rivals the most exquisitely done scenes in the best of animated movies of modern times. Vālmeeki, indeed, has the eye of a cinematographer and an art director of modern times, to make this scene come alive.
2.91.25 ததோऽப்யவர்ஷந்த கநா திவ்யா: குஸுமவ்ருஷ்டய: ।
திவ்யதுந்துபிகோஷஸ்ச திக்ஷு ஸர்வாஸு ஸுஸ்ருவே ॥
tatō'bhyavarṣanta ghanā divyāḥ kusumavṛṣṭayaḥ ।
divyadundubhighōṣaṡca dikṣu sarvāsu ṡuṡruvē ॥
The clouds poured down showers of celestial flowers,
and the sound of celestial kettledrums
was heard from all directions.
2.91.26 ப்ரவவுஸ்சோத்தமா வாதா நந்ருதுஸ்சாப்ஸரோகணா: ।
ஜகுஸ்ச தேவகந்தர்வா வீணா: ப்ரமுமுசுஸ்ஸ்வராந் ॥
pravavuṡcōttamā vātā nanṛtuṡcāpsarōgaṇāḥ ।
jaguṡca dēvagandharvā vīṇāḥ pramumucussvarān ॥
The most delightful breezes blew,
the bands of Apsaras danced,
the gods and the Gandharvas sang and
the Veeṇas resounded with notes.
2.91.27 ஸ ஸப்தோ த்யாம் ச பூமிம் ச ப்ராணிநாம் ஸ்ரவணாநி ச ।
விவேஸோச்சரிதஸ்ஸ்லக்ஷ்ணஸ்ஸமோ லயஸமந்வித: ॥
sa ṡabdō dyāṃ ca bhūmiṃ ca prāṇināṃ ṡravaṇāni ca ।
vivēṡōccharitaṡṡlakṣṇassamō layasamanvitaḥ ॥
That melodious, rhythmic, well-modulated sound
filled the earth, the sky and the ears of all beings.
2.91.28 தஸ்மிந்நுபரதே ஸப்தே திவ்யே ஸ்ரோத்ர ஸுகே ந்ருணாம் ।
ததர்ஸ பாரதம் ஸைந்யம் விதாநம் விஸ்வகர்மண: ॥
tasminnuparatē ṡabdē divyē ṡrōtra sukhē nṛṇām ।
dadarṡa bhārataṃ sainyaṃ vidhānaṃ viṡvakarmaṇaḥ ॥
As that divine sound, which
captivated the ears of men, quieted down,
the structure made by Viṡwakarma
appeared in front of the army of Bharata!
2.91.29 பபூவ ஹி ஸமா பூமிஸ்ஸமந்தாத்பஞ்சயோஜநா ।
ஸாத்வலைர்பஹுபிஸ்சந்நா நீலவைடூர்யஸந்நிபை: ॥
babhūva hi samā bhūmissamantātpañcayōjanā ।
ṡādvalairbhahubhiṡchannā nīlavaiḍhūryasannibhaiḥ ॥
The ground to an extent of five Yōjanas all around,
became even, covered abundantly with
young grass that resembled sapphire and emerald.
2.91.30 தஸ்மிந்பில்வா: கபித்தாஸ்ச பநஸா பீஜபூரகா: ।
ஆமலக்யோ பபூவுஸ்ச சூதாஸ்ச பலபூஷணா: ॥
tasminbilvāḥ kapitthāṡca panasā bījapūrakāḥ ।
āmalakyō babhūvuṡca cūtāṡca phalabhūṣaṇāḥ ॥
And there sprang up Bilva, Kapittha,
wood-apple, jack fruit, citron,
Āmalaka and mango trees loaded with fruit.
2.91.31 உத்தரேப்ய: குருப்யஸ்ச வநம் திவ்யோபபோகவத் ।
ஆஜகாம நதீ திவ்யா தீரஜைர்பஹுபிர்வ்ருதா ॥
uttarēbhyaḥ kurubhyaṡca vanaṃ divyōpabhōgavat ।
ājagāma nadī divyā tīrajairbhahubhirvṛtā ॥
From the Uttara-kurus came the pleasance fit for the gods,
and celestial rivers with many trees on their banks.
2.91.32 சதுஸ்ஸாலாநி ஸுப்ராணி ஸாலாஸ்ச கஜவாஜிநாம் ।
ஹர்ம்யப்ராஸாதஸம்பாதாஸ்தோரணாநி ஸுபாநி ச ॥
catuṡṡālāni ṡubhrāṇi ṡālāṡca gajavājinām ।
harmyaprāsādasambādhāstōraṇāni ṡubhāni ca ॥
And there emerged clean houses with four quarters,
stables for elephants and horses, a multitude of
multistoried mansions and beautiful gateways.
2.91.34-35 ஸிதமேகநிபம் சாபி ராஜவேஸ்ம ஸுதோரணம் ।
திவ்யமால்யக்ருதாகாரம் திவ்யகந்தஸமுக்ஷிதம் ॥
சதுரஸ்ரமஸம்பாதம் ஸயநாஸநயாநவத் ।
திவ்யைஸ்ஸர்வரஸைர்யுக்தம் திவ்யபோஜநவஸ்த்ரவத் ॥
உபகல்பிதஸர்வாந்நம் தௌதநிர்மலபாஜநம் ।
க்லுப்தஸர்வாஸநம் ஸ்ரீமஸ்த்வாஸ்தீர்ணஸயநோத்தமம் ॥
sitamēghanibhaṃ cāpi rājavēṡma sutōraṇam ।
divyamālyakṛtākāraṃ divyagandhasamukṣitam ॥
caturaṡramasaṃbādhaṃ ṡayanāsanayānavat ।
divyaissarvarasairyuktaṃ divyabhōjanavastravat ॥
upakalpitasarvānnaṃ dhautanirmalabhājanam ।
kluptasarvāsanaṃ ṡrīmastvāstīrṇaṡayanōttamam ॥
And there emerged a splendid royal mansion
that resembled a white cloud,
with a beautiful doorway,
embellished with celestial flowers,
perfumed with divine scents,
spacious, quadrangular in shape,
full with beds, couches and carriages,
stocked abundantly with sweet juices,
food and garment fit for the gods,
with every kind of food prepared,
with washed and clean silverware,
with an assortment of seats everywhere,
and with beds covered with splendid coverlets.
2.91.36 ப்ரவிவேஸ மஹாபாஹுரநுஜ்ஞாதோ மஹர்ஷிணா ।
வேஸ்ம தத்ரத்நஸம்பூர்ணம் பரத: கைகயீஸுத: ॥
pravivēṡa mahābāhuranujñātō maharṣiṇā ।
vēṡma tadratnasampūrṇaṃ bharataḥ kaikayīsutaḥ ॥
The mighty armed Bharata, the son of Kaikēyee,
entered that mansion that was full of gems,
with due permission from the Maharshi.
2.91.37 அநுஜக்முஸ்ச தம் ஸர்வே மந்த்ரிணஸ்ஸபுரோஹிதா: ।
பபூவுஸ்ச முதா யுக்தா த்ருஷ்ட்வா தம் வேஸ்மஸம்விதிம் ॥
anujagmuṡca taṃ sarvē mantriṇassapurōhitāḥ ।
babhūvuṡca mudā yuktā dṛṣṭvā taṃ vēṡmasaṃvidhim ॥
All the ministers and Purōhitas followed him.
They were delighted to see the arrangements in that palace.
2.91.38 தத்ர ராஜாஸநம் திவ்யம் வ்யஜநம் சத்ரமேவ ச ।
பரதோ மந்த்ரிபிஸ்ஸார்தமப்யவர்தத ராஜவத் ॥
tatra rājāsanaṃ divyaṃ vyajanaṃ chatramēva ca ।
bharatō mantribhissārdhamabhyavartata rājavat ॥
And there was an exquisite throne
along with a parasol and a flywhisk.
Bharata, along with the ministers
circumambulated it as if it were a king.
2.91.39 ஆஸநம் பூஜயாமாஸ ராமாயாபிப்ரணம்ய ச ।
வாலவ்யஜநமாதாய ந்யஷீதத்ஸசிவாஸநே ॥
āsanaṃ pūjayāmāsa rāmāyābhipraṇamya ca ।
vālavyajanamādāya nyaṣīdatsacivāsanē ॥
Saluting Rāma, he performed Pūja to the throne.
Taking the flywhisk (in his hand),
he sat in the seat meant for a minister.
2.91.40 ஆநுபூர்வ்யாந்நிஷேதுஸ்ச ஸர்வே மந்த்ரிபுரோஹிதா: ।
ததஸ்ஸேநாபதி: பஸ்சாத்ப்ரஸாஸ்தாச நிஷேதது: ॥
ānupūrvyānniṣēduṡca sarvē mantripurōhitāḥ ।
tatassēnāpatiḥ paṡcātpraṡāstāca niṣēdatuḥ ॥
There sat the ministers and Purōhitas in proper order
followed by the army chief and his second-in-command.
2.91.41 ததஸ்தத்ர முஹூர்தேந நத்ய: பாயஸகர்தமா: ।
உபாதிஷ்டந்த பரதம் பரத்வாஜஸ்ய ஸாஸநாத் ॥
tatastatra muhūrtēna nadyaḥ pāyasakardamāḥ ।
upātiṣṭhanta bharataṃ bharadvājasya ṡāsanāt ॥
Instantly, at the bidding of Bharadwāja,
there flowed, towards Bharata, rivers of Pāyasam!
2.91.42 தாஸாமுபயத: கூலம் பாண்டும்ருத்திகலேபநா: ।
ரம்யாஸ்சாவஸதா திவ்யா ப்ரஹ்மணஸ்து ப்ரஸாதஜா: ॥
tāsāmubhayataḥ kūlaṃ pāṇḍumṛttikalēpanāḥ ।
ramyāṡcāvasadhā divyā brahmaṇastu prasādajāḥ ॥
On both banks of those rivers appeared
splendid and charming houses that were
plastered with white clay
by the grace of Brahma!
2.91.43 தேநைவ ச முஹூர்தேந திவ்யாऽபரணபூஷிதா: ।
ஆகுர்விம்ஸதிஸாஹஸ்ரா: ப்ரஹ்மணா ப்ரஹிதா: ஸ்த்ரிய: ॥
tēnaiva ca muhūrtēna divyā'bharaṇabhūṣitāḥ ।
āgurviṃṡatisāhasrāḥ brahmaṇā prahitāḥ striyaḥ ॥
At that very moment, sent by Brahma, came
twenty thousand women wearing every kind of ornament.

kṛtabuddhiṃ nivāsāya tatraiva sa munistadā ।
bharataṃ kaikayīputramātithyēnanyamantrayat ॥
Seeing Bharata agree to stay there,
the Muni extended a formal invitation
to that son of Kaikēyee, to be his guest.
2.91.2 அப்ரவீத்பரதஸ்த்வேநம் நந்விதம் பவதா க்ருதம் ।
பாத்யமர்க்யம் ததாऽதித்யம் வநே யதுபபத்யதே ॥
abravīdbharatastvēnaṃ nanvidaṃ bhavatā kṛtam ।
pādyamarghyaṃ tathā'tithyaṃ vanē yadupapadyatē ॥
Bharata responded saying:
‘You have already treated us well with
water to wash, water to drink
and whatever is available in the Vana.’
2.91.3 அதோவாச பரத்வாஜோ பரதம் ப்ரஹஸந்நிவ ।
ஜாநே த்வாம் ப்ரீதிஸம்யுக்தம் துஷ்யேஸ்த்வம் யேந கேநசித் ॥
athōvāca bharadvājō bharataṃ prahasanniva ।
jānē tvāṃ prītisaṃyuktaṃ tuṣyēstvaṃ yēna kēnacit ॥
Smiling, Bharadwāja said to Bharata:
‘I know you are easily pleased, and
will be satisfied with whatever is offered!’
2.91.4 ஸேநாயாஸ்து தவைதஸ்யா: கர்துமிச்சாமி போஜநம் ।
மம ப்ரீதிர்யதாரூபா ததார்ஹோ மநுஜர்ஷப ॥
sēnāyāstu tavaitasyāḥ kartumicchāmi bhōjanam ।
mama prītiryathārūpā tathārhō manujarṣabha ॥
I would like to feast all of your army.
May you accept, O bull among men,
what my affection prompts me to offer.
2.91.5 கிமர்தம் சாபி நிக்ஷிப்ய தூரே பலமிஹாகத: ।
கஸ்மாந்நேஹோபயாதோऽஸி ஸபல: புருஷர்ஷப: ॥
kimarthaṃ cāpi nikṣipya dūrē balamihāgataḥ ।
kasmānnēhōpayātō'si sabalaḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ ॥
O bull among men! Why did you station your army
at a distance before coming here?
Why did you not come along with your army?
2.91.6 பரத: ப்ரத்யுவாசேதம் ப்ராஞ்ஜலிஸ்தம் தபோதநம் ।
ஸஸைந்யோ நோபயாதோऽஸ்மி பகவந்பகவத்பயாத் ॥
bharataḥ pratyuvācēdaṃ prāñjalistaṃ tapōdhanam ।
sasainyō nōpayātō'smi bhagavanbhagavadbhayāt ॥
Bharata, with joined palms, responded
to that man, rich with Tapa:
‘O Bhagawan! I did not bring the army
for the fear of you, the venerable one!’
2.91.7 ராஜ்ஞா ச பகவந்நித்யம் ராஜபுத்ரேண வா ஸதா ।
யத்நத: பரிஹர்தவ்யா விஷயேஷு தபஸ்விந: ॥
rājñā ca bhagavannityaṃ rājaputrēṇa vā sadā ।
yatnataḥ parihartavyā viṣayēṣu tapasvinaḥ ॥
Kings and princes must take great care to see that
Tapasvis living in the realm are spared intrusion.
2.91.8 வாஜிமுக்யா மநுஷ்யாஸ்ச மத்தாஸ்ச வரவாரணா: ।
ப்ரச்சாத்ய பகவந்பூமிம் மஹதீமநுயாந்தி மாம் ॥
vājimukhyā manuṣyāṡca mattāṡca varavāraṇāḥ ।
pracchādya bhagavanbhūmiṃ mahatīmanuyānti mām ॥
O Bhagawan! The best of horses, the best of men,
and the best of the elephants that are in rut,
that cover a vast area of land followed me.
2.91.9 தே வ்ருக்ஷாநுதகம் பூமிமாஸ்ரமேஷூடஜாம் ஸ்ததா ।
ந ஹிம்ஸ்யுரிதி தேநாऽஹமேக ஏவ ஸமாகத: ॥
tē vṛkṣānudakaṃ bhūmimāṡramēṣūṭajāṃ stathā ।
na hiṃsyuriti tēnā'hamēka ēva samāgataḥ ॥
I was worried that their presence might damage the
trees, waters, grounds and huts of the Āṡrama.
Hence, I came alone here, by myself.
2.91.10 ஆநீயதாமிதஸ்ஸேநேத்யாஜ்ஞப்த: பரமர்ஷிணா ।
ததஸ்து சக்ரே பரதஸ்ஸேநாயாஸ்ஸமுபாகமம் ॥
ānīyatāmitassēnētyājñaptaḥ paramarṣiṇā ।
tatastu cakrē bharatassēnāyāssamupāgamam ॥
Then, with that great Ṛshi commanding,
‘Bring the army here’,
Bharata arranged for the army to be there.
2.91.11 அக்நிஸாலாம் ப்ரவிஸ்யாத பீத்வாऽப: பரிம்ருஜ்ய ச ।
ஆதித்யஸ்ய க்ரியாஹேதோர்விஸ்வகர்மாணமாஹ்வயத் ॥
agniṡālāṃ praviṡyātha pītvā'paḥ parimṛjya ca ।
ātithyasya kriyāhētōrviṡvakarmāṇamāhvayat ॥
He then went into the fire-chamber,
took a ceremonial sip of water,
cleansed himself ceremoniously and
invoked Viṡwakarma to make
arrangements for the hospitality.
2.91.12 ஆஹ்வயே விஸ்வகர்மாணமஹம் த்வஷ்டாரமேவ ச ।
ஆதித்யம் கர்துமிச்சாமி தத்ர மே ஸம்விதீயதாம் ॥
āhvayē viṡvakarmāṇamahaṃ tvaṣṭāramēva ca ।
ātithyaṃ kartumiccāmi tatra mē saṃvidhīyatām ॥
I invoke Viṡwakarma, the celestial builder!
I like to provide hospitality,
May all the arrangements be made!
2.91.13 ஆஹ்வயே லோகபாலாம்ஸ்த்ரீந் தேவாந் ஸக்ரமுகாம்ஸ்ததா ।
ஆதித்யம் கர்துமிச்சாமி தத்ர மே ஸம்விதீயதாம் ॥
āhvayē lōkapālāṃstrīn dēvān ṡakramukhāṃstathā ।
ātithyaṃ kartumicchāmi tatra mē saṃvidhīyatām ॥
I invoke the three Dēvas headed by Indra,
the governors of the worlds!
I would like to provide hospitality,
May all the arrangements be made!
2.91.14 ப்ராக்ஸ்ரோதஸஸ்ச யா நத்ய: ப்ரத்யக்ஸ்ரோதஸ ஏவ ச ।
ப்ருதிவ்யாமந்தரிக்ஷே ச ஸமாயாந்த்வத்ய ஸர்வஸ: ॥
prāksrōtasaṡca yā nadyaḥ pratyaksrōtasa ēva ca ।
pṛthivyāmantarikṣē ca samāyāntvadya sarvaṡaḥ ॥
May all the rivers on earth and in the heavens,
that flow east and that flow west,
present themselves here from everywhere!
2.91.15 அந்யா ஸ்ரவந்து மைரேயம் ஸுராமந்யாஸ்ஸுவிஷ்டிதாம் ।
அபராஸ்சோதகம் ஸீதமிக்ஷுகாண்டரஸோபமம் ॥
anyā sravantu mairēyaṃ surāmanyāssuviṣṭhitām ।
aparāṡcōdakaṃ ṡītamikṣukāṇḍarasōpamam ॥
May some of them bear date-wine,
others well brewed liquor;
while yet others carry cool water
sweet as the juice of the sugarcane!
2.91.16 ஆஹ்வயே தேவகந்தர்வாந்விஸ்வாவஸுஹஹாஹுஹூந் ।
ததைவாப்ஸரஸோ தேவீர்கந்தர்வீஸ்சாபி ஸர்வஸ: ॥
āhvayē dēvagandharvānviṡvāvasuhahāhuhūn ।
tathaivāpsarasō dēvīrgandharvīṡcāpi sarvaṡaḥ ॥
I invoke the celestial Gandharvas, Viṡwāvasu, Hahā and Huhū,
and also Apsarasas from everywhere
that belong to Dēvas and Gandharvas.
2.91.17 க்ருதாசீமத விஸ்வாசீம் மிஸ்ரகேஸீமலம்புஸாம் ।
நாகதந்தாம் ச ஹேமாம் ச ஹிமாமத்ரிக்ருதஸ்தலாம் ॥
ghṛtācīmatha viṡvācīṃ miṡrakēṡīmalaṃbusām ।
nāgadantāṃ ca hēmāṃ ca himāmadrikṛtasthalām ॥
(I invite) Ghṛtaci, Viṡvāci, Miṡrakēsi,
Ālambusa, Nāgadanta, Hēma and
Hima who dwells on the mountain.
2.91.18 ஸக்ரம் யாஸ்சோபதிஷ்டந்தி ப்ரஹ்மாணம் யாஸ்ச யோஷித: ।
ஸர்வாஸ்தும்புருணா ஸார்தமஹ்வயே ஸபரிச்சதா: ॥
ṡakraṃ yāṡcōpatiṣṭhanti brahmāṇaṃ yāṡca yōṣitaḥ ।
sarvāstumburuṇā sārthamahvayē saparicchadāḥ ॥
I call upon all those women who wait upon Indra
and those who wait upon Brahma
to come in the company of Tumburu
and bring their instruments with them.
2.91.19 வநம் குருஷு யத்திவ்யம் வாஸோபூஷணபத்ரவத் ।
திவ்யநாரீபலம் ஸஸ்வத்தத்கௌபேரமிஹைது ச ॥
vanaṃ kuruṣu yaddivyaṃ vāsōbhūṣaṇapatravat ।
divyanārīphalaṃ ṡaṡvattatkaubēramihaitu ca ॥
May the celestial pleasance of the
Uttara-Kuru country, belonging to Kubēra,
which always has trees for garments, leaves for ornaments,
and celestial women for fruit, be present here.
2.91.20-21 இஹ மே பகவாந் ஸோமோ விதத்தாமந்நமுத்தமம் ।
பக்ஷ்யம்போஜ்யம் ச சோஷ்யம் ச லேஹ்யம் ச விவிதம் பஹு ॥
விசித்ராணி ச மால்யாநி பாதபப்ரச்யுதாநி ச ।
ராதீநி ச பேயாநி மாம்ஸாநி விவிதாநி ச ॥
iha mē bhagavān sōmō vidhattāmannamuttamam ।
bhakṣyaṃbhōjyaṃ ca cōṣyaṃ ca lēhyaṃ ca vividhaṃ bahu ॥
vicitrāṇi ca mālyāni pādapapracyutāni ca ।
rādīni ca pēyāni māṃsāni vividhāni ca ॥
May Bhagawan Sōma arrange here, the best food of various
textures, that can be munched, chewed, swallowed and licked;
as well as a variety of flowers,
that fell from the trees by themselves,
drinks including liquor, and different kinds of meat.
2.91.22 ஏவம் ஸமாதிநா யுக்தஸ்தேஜஸாऽப்ரதிமேந ச ।
ஸீக்ஷாஸ்வரஸமாயுக்தம் தபஸா சாப்ரவீந்முநி: ॥
ēvaṃ samādhinā yuktastējasā'pratimēna ca ।
ṡīkṣāsvarasamāyuktaṃ tapasā cābravīnmuniḥ ॥
That Muni, of unparalleled radiance,
becoming one with the powers of the universe,
invoked thus with his Tapa and
with intonations as laid out in Ṡiksha.
Ṡiksha is one of the six Vēdāṅgas.
2.91.23 மநஸா த்யாயதஸ்தஸ்ய ப்ராங்முகஸ்ய க்ருதாஞ்ஜலே: ।
ஆஜக்முஸ்தாநி ஸர்வாணி தைவதாநி ப்ருதக்ப்ருதக் ॥
manasā dhyāyatastasya prāṅmukhasya kṛtāñjalēḥ ।
ājagmustāni sarvāṇi daivatāni pṛthakpṛthak ॥
As he thus invoked in his mind,
facing east with joined palms,
all the Dēvatas arrived one by one.
2.91.24 மலயம் தர்துரம் சைவ ததஸ்ஸ்வேதநுதோऽநில: ।
உபஸ்ப்ருஸ்ய வவௌ யுக்த்யா ஸுப்ரியாத்மா ஸுகஸ்ஸிவ: ॥
malayaṃ darduraṃ caiva tatassvēdanudō'nilaḥ ।
upaspṛṡya vavau yuktyā supriyātmā sukhaṡṡivaḥ ॥
A gentle breeze passing over the
mountains of Malaya and Dardura,
blew, pleasant, comforting and auspicious,
warding off perspiration by its touch. The next fifteen Ṡlōkas paint a scene that rivals the most exquisitely done scenes in the best of animated movies of modern times. Vālmeeki, indeed, has the eye of a cinematographer and an art director of modern times, to make this scene come alive.
2.91.25 ததோऽப்யவர்ஷந்த கநா திவ்யா: குஸுமவ்ருஷ்டய: ।
திவ்யதுந்துபிகோஷஸ்ச திக்ஷு ஸர்வாஸு ஸுஸ்ருவே ॥
tatō'bhyavarṣanta ghanā divyāḥ kusumavṛṣṭayaḥ ।
divyadundubhighōṣaṡca dikṣu sarvāsu ṡuṡruvē ॥
The clouds poured down showers of celestial flowers,
and the sound of celestial kettledrums
was heard from all directions.
2.91.26 ப்ரவவுஸ்சோத்தமா வாதா நந்ருதுஸ்சாப்ஸரோகணா: ।
ஜகுஸ்ச தேவகந்தர்வா வீணா: ப்ரமுமுசுஸ்ஸ்வராந் ॥
pravavuṡcōttamā vātā nanṛtuṡcāpsarōgaṇāḥ ।
jaguṡca dēvagandharvā vīṇāḥ pramumucussvarān ॥
The most delightful breezes blew,
the bands of Apsaras danced,
the gods and the Gandharvas sang and
the Veeṇas resounded with notes.
2.91.27 ஸ ஸப்தோ த்யாம் ச பூமிம் ச ப்ராணிநாம் ஸ்ரவணாநி ச ।
விவேஸோச்சரிதஸ்ஸ்லக்ஷ்ணஸ்ஸமோ லயஸமந்வித: ॥
sa ṡabdō dyāṃ ca bhūmiṃ ca prāṇināṃ ṡravaṇāni ca ।
vivēṡōccharitaṡṡlakṣṇassamō layasamanvitaḥ ॥
That melodious, rhythmic, well-modulated sound
filled the earth, the sky and the ears of all beings.
2.91.28 தஸ்மிந்நுபரதே ஸப்தே திவ்யே ஸ்ரோத்ர ஸுகே ந்ருணாம் ।
ததர்ஸ பாரதம் ஸைந்யம் விதாநம் விஸ்வகர்மண: ॥
tasminnuparatē ṡabdē divyē ṡrōtra sukhē nṛṇām ।
dadarṡa bhārataṃ sainyaṃ vidhānaṃ viṡvakarmaṇaḥ ॥
As that divine sound, which
captivated the ears of men, quieted down,
the structure made by Viṡwakarma
appeared in front of the army of Bharata!
2.91.29 பபூவ ஹி ஸமா பூமிஸ்ஸமந்தாத்பஞ்சயோஜநா ।
ஸாத்வலைர்பஹுபிஸ்சந்நா நீலவைடூர்யஸந்நிபை: ॥
babhūva hi samā bhūmissamantātpañcayōjanā ।
ṡādvalairbhahubhiṡchannā nīlavaiḍhūryasannibhaiḥ ॥
The ground to an extent of five Yōjanas all around,
became even, covered abundantly with
young grass that resembled sapphire and emerald.
2.91.30 தஸ்மிந்பில்வா: கபித்தாஸ்ச பநஸா பீஜபூரகா: ।
ஆமலக்யோ பபூவுஸ்ச சூதாஸ்ச பலபூஷணா: ॥
tasminbilvāḥ kapitthāṡca panasā bījapūrakāḥ ।
āmalakyō babhūvuṡca cūtāṡca phalabhūṣaṇāḥ ॥
And there sprang up Bilva, Kapittha,
wood-apple, jack fruit, citron,
Āmalaka and mango trees loaded with fruit.
2.91.31 உத்தரேப்ய: குருப்யஸ்ச வநம் திவ்யோபபோகவத் ।
ஆஜகாம நதீ திவ்யா தீரஜைர்பஹுபிர்வ்ருதா ॥
uttarēbhyaḥ kurubhyaṡca vanaṃ divyōpabhōgavat ।
ājagāma nadī divyā tīrajairbhahubhirvṛtā ॥
From the Uttara-kurus came the pleasance fit for the gods,
and celestial rivers with many trees on their banks.
2.91.32 சதுஸ்ஸாலாநி ஸுப்ராணி ஸாலாஸ்ச கஜவாஜிநாம் ।
ஹர்ம்யப்ராஸாதஸம்பாதாஸ்தோரணாநி ஸுபாநி ச ॥
catuṡṡālāni ṡubhrāṇi ṡālāṡca gajavājinām ।
harmyaprāsādasambādhāstōraṇāni ṡubhāni ca ॥
And there emerged clean houses with four quarters,
stables for elephants and horses, a multitude of
multistoried mansions and beautiful gateways.
2.91.34-35 ஸிதமேகநிபம் சாபி ராஜவேஸ்ம ஸுதோரணம் ।
திவ்யமால்யக்ருதாகாரம் திவ்யகந்தஸமுக்ஷிதம் ॥
சதுரஸ்ரமஸம்பாதம் ஸயநாஸநயாநவத் ।
திவ்யைஸ்ஸர்வரஸைர்யுக்தம் திவ்யபோஜநவஸ்த்ரவத் ॥
உபகல்பிதஸர்வாந்நம் தௌதநிர்மலபாஜநம் ।
க்லுப்தஸர்வாஸநம் ஸ்ரீமஸ்த்வாஸ்தீர்ணஸயநோத்தமம் ॥
sitamēghanibhaṃ cāpi rājavēṡma sutōraṇam ।
divyamālyakṛtākāraṃ divyagandhasamukṣitam ॥
caturaṡramasaṃbādhaṃ ṡayanāsanayānavat ।
divyaissarvarasairyuktaṃ divyabhōjanavastravat ॥
upakalpitasarvānnaṃ dhautanirmalabhājanam ।
kluptasarvāsanaṃ ṡrīmastvāstīrṇaṡayanōttamam ॥
And there emerged a splendid royal mansion
that resembled a white cloud,
with a beautiful doorway,
embellished with celestial flowers,
perfumed with divine scents,
spacious, quadrangular in shape,
full with beds, couches and carriages,
stocked abundantly with sweet juices,
food and garment fit for the gods,
with every kind of food prepared,
with washed and clean silverware,
with an assortment of seats everywhere,
and with beds covered with splendid coverlets.
2.91.36 ப்ரவிவேஸ மஹாபாஹுரநுஜ்ஞாதோ மஹர்ஷிணா ।
வேஸ்ம தத்ரத்நஸம்பூர்ணம் பரத: கைகயீஸுத: ॥
pravivēṡa mahābāhuranujñātō maharṣiṇā ।
vēṡma tadratnasampūrṇaṃ bharataḥ kaikayīsutaḥ ॥
The mighty armed Bharata, the son of Kaikēyee,
entered that mansion that was full of gems,
with due permission from the Maharshi.
2.91.37 அநுஜக்முஸ்ச தம் ஸர்வே மந்த்ரிணஸ்ஸபுரோஹிதா: ।
பபூவுஸ்ச முதா யுக்தா த்ருஷ்ட்வா தம் வேஸ்மஸம்விதிம் ॥
anujagmuṡca taṃ sarvē mantriṇassapurōhitāḥ ।
babhūvuṡca mudā yuktā dṛṣṭvā taṃ vēṡmasaṃvidhim ॥
All the ministers and Purōhitas followed him.
They were delighted to see the arrangements in that palace.
2.91.38 தத்ர ராஜாஸநம் திவ்யம் வ்யஜநம் சத்ரமேவ ச ।
பரதோ மந்த்ரிபிஸ்ஸார்தமப்யவர்தத ராஜவத் ॥
tatra rājāsanaṃ divyaṃ vyajanaṃ chatramēva ca ।
bharatō mantribhissārdhamabhyavartata rājavat ॥
And there was an exquisite throne
along with a parasol and a flywhisk.
Bharata, along with the ministers
circumambulated it as if it were a king.
2.91.39 ஆஸநம் பூஜயாமாஸ ராமாயாபிப்ரணம்ய ச ।
வாலவ்யஜநமாதாய ந்யஷீதத்ஸசிவாஸநே ॥
āsanaṃ pūjayāmāsa rāmāyābhipraṇamya ca ।
vālavyajanamādāya nyaṣīdatsacivāsanē ॥
Saluting Rāma, he performed Pūja to the throne.
Taking the flywhisk (in his hand),
he sat in the seat meant for a minister.
2.91.40 ஆநுபூர்வ்யாந்நிஷேதுஸ்ச ஸர்வே மந்த்ரிபுரோஹிதா: ।
ததஸ்ஸேநாபதி: பஸ்சாத்ப்ரஸாஸ்தாச நிஷேதது: ॥
ānupūrvyānniṣēduṡca sarvē mantripurōhitāḥ ।
tatassēnāpatiḥ paṡcātpraṡāstāca niṣēdatuḥ ॥
There sat the ministers and Purōhitas in proper order
followed by the army chief and his second-in-command.
2.91.41 ததஸ்தத்ர முஹூர்தேந நத்ய: பாயஸகர்தமா: ।
உபாதிஷ்டந்த பரதம் பரத்வாஜஸ்ய ஸாஸநாத் ॥
tatastatra muhūrtēna nadyaḥ pāyasakardamāḥ ।
upātiṣṭhanta bharataṃ bharadvājasya ṡāsanāt ॥
Instantly, at the bidding of Bharadwāja,
there flowed, towards Bharata, rivers of Pāyasam!
2.91.42 தாஸாமுபயத: கூலம் பாண்டும்ருத்திகலேபநா: ।
ரம்யாஸ்சாவஸதா திவ்யா ப்ரஹ்மணஸ்து ப்ரஸாதஜா: ॥
tāsāmubhayataḥ kūlaṃ pāṇḍumṛttikalēpanāḥ ।
ramyāṡcāvasadhā divyā brahmaṇastu prasādajāḥ ॥
On both banks of those rivers appeared
splendid and charming houses that were
plastered with white clay
by the grace of Brahma!
2.91.43 தேநைவ ச முஹூர்தேந திவ்யாऽபரணபூஷிதா: ।
ஆகுர்விம்ஸதிஸாஹஸ்ரா: ப்ரஹ்மணா ப்ரஹிதா: ஸ்த்ரிய: ॥
tēnaiva ca muhūrtēna divyā'bharaṇabhūṣitāḥ ।
āgurviṃṡatisāhasrāḥ brahmaṇā prahitāḥ striyaḥ ॥
At that very moment, sent by Brahma, came
twenty thousand women wearing every kind of ornament.
