Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 90
In this Sarga, Bharata asks his ministers to stay back and along with Vasishṭha, visits Bharadwāja. After exchanging pleasantries, Bharadwāja says that he is apprehensive of Bharata’s visit and hopes that he does not intend to harm Rāma.
Bharata feels very sad at those remarks and swears that he does not approve of whatever his mother did in his absence. He swears that he wants to bring back Rāma to Ayōdhyā. Bharadwāja says that he is well aware of his character, but only wanted to bring his sentiments into the open, so that it adds to his renown.
Bharata requests Bharadwāja to tell him the whereabouts of Rāma. Bharadwāja tells him that Rāma, along with Seetā and Lakshmaṇa are on Mount Citrakūṭa. He then asks him to stay at his Āṡrama for the night and Bharata obliges.
2.90.1-2 பரத்வாஜாஸ்ரமம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா க்ரோஸாதேவ நரர்ஷப: ।
பலம் ஸர்வமவஸ்தாப்ய ஜகாம ஸஹ மந்த்ரிபி: ॥
பத்ப்யாமேவ ஹி தர்மஜ்ஞோ ந்யஸ்தஸஸ்த்ரபரிச்சத: ।
வஸாநோ வாஸஸீ க்ஷௌமே புரோதாய புரோதஸம் ॥
bharadvājāṡramaṃ dṛṣṭvā krōṡādēva nararṣabhaḥ ।
balaṃ sarvamavasthāpya jagāma saha mantribhiḥ ॥
padbhyāmēva hi dharmajñō nyastaṡastraparicchadaḥ ।
vasānō vāsasī kṣaumē purōdhāya purōdhasam ॥
That bull among men, asked the army to stay back
when he saw Bharadwāja’s Āṡrama
from a distance of a Krōṡa and
proceeded along with his ministers.
That knower of Dharma, wearing silk garments,
leaving all his weapons and entourage behind,
went on foot with the Purōhita ahead of him.
2.90.3 ததஸ்ஸந்தர்ஸநே தஸ்ய பரத்வாஜஸ்ய ராகவ: ।
மந்த்ரிணஸ்தாநவஸ்தாப்ய ஜகாமாநுபுரோஹிதம் ॥
tatassandarṡanē tasya bharadvājasya rāghavaḥ ।
mantriṇastānavasthāpya jagāmānupurōhitam ॥
Upon seeing Bharadwāja, Rāghava
asked the ministers to stay back
and proceeded along with Purōhita.
2.90.4 வஸிஷ்டமத த்ருஷ்ட்வைவ பரத்வாஜோ மஹாதபா: ।
ஸஞ்சசாऽலாஸநாத்தூர்ணம் ஸிஷ்யாநர்க்யமிதி ப்ருவந் ॥
vasiṣṭhamatha dṛṣṭvaiva bharadvājō mahātapāḥ ।
sañcacā'lāsanāttūrṇaṃ ṡiṣyānarghyamiti bruvan ॥
As soon as he saw Vasishṭha,
Bharadwāja, who did great Tapa, got up from his seat
and asked his Ṡishyas to bring water.
2.90.5 ஸமாகம்ய வஸிஷ்டேந பரதேநாபிவாதித: ।
அபுத்த்யத மஹாதேஜாஸ்ஸுதம் தஸரதஸ்ய தம் ॥
samāgamya vasiṣṭhēna bharatēnābhivāditaḥ ।
abuddhyata mahātējāssutaṃ daṡarathasya tam ॥
The supremely radiant Bharadwāja met Vasishṭha,
and learned that Bharata, who paid obeisance to him,
to be the son of Daṡaratha.
2.90.6-7 தாப்யாமர்க்யம் ச பாத்யம் ச தத்வா பஸ்சாத்பலாநி ச ।
ஆநுபூர்வ்யாச்ச தர்மஜ்ஞ: பப்ரச்ச குஸலம் குலே ॥
அயோத்யாயாம் பலே கோஸே மித்ரேஷ்வபி ச மந்த்ரிஷு ।
ஜாநந் தஸரதம் வ்ருத்தம் ந ராஜாநமுதாஹரத் ॥
tābhyāmarghyaṃ ca pādyaṃ ca datvā paṡcātphalāni ca ।
ānupūrvyāccha dharmajñaḥ papraccha kuṡalaṃ kulē ॥
ayōdhyāyāṃ balē kōṡē mitrēṣvapi ca mantriṣu ।
jānan daṡarathaṃ vṛttaṃ na rājānamudāharat ॥
The Dharmajña, after offering them
in proper order, water to wash their feet,
water to drink and then fruits (to eat),
enquired about the well being of the family,
the city of Ayōdhyā, the army, the treasury,
the ministers and the friends.
He did not enquire about Daṡaratha,
as he already knew about his passing.
2.90.8 வஸிஷ்டோ பரதஸ்சைநம் பப்ரச்சதுரநாமயம் ।
ஸரீரேऽக்நிஷு வ்ருக்ஷேஷு ஸிஷ்யேஷு ம்ருகபக்ஷிஷு ॥
vasiṣṭhō bharataṡcainaṃ papracchaturanāmayam ।
ṡarīrē'gniṣu vṛkṣēṣu ṡiṣyēṣu mṛgapakṣiṣu ॥
Vasishṭha and Bharata, in turn, asked him about his health,
the sacred fires, the trees, the birds, the animals and his Ṡishyas.
2.90.9 ததேதி தத்ப்ரதிஜ்ஞாய பரத்வாஜோ மஹாதபா: ।
பரதம் ப்ரத்யுவாசேதம் ராகவஸ்நேஹபந்தநாத் ॥
tathēti tatpratijñāya bharadvājō mahātapāḥ ।
bharataṃ pratyuvācēdaṃ rāghavasnēhabandhanāt ॥
Replying that everything was as they could wish,
Bharadwāja, of great Tapa, asked Bharata,
prompted by his affection for Rāghava:
Rāghava, here refers to Rāma.
2.90.10 கிமிஹாऽகமநே கார்யம் தவ ராஜ்யம் ப்ரஸாஸத: ।
ஏததாசக்ஷ்வ மே ஸர்வம் ந ஹி மே ஸுத்த்யதே மந: ॥
kimihā'gamanē kāryaṃ tava rājyaṃ praṡāsataḥ ।
ētadācakṣva mē sarvaṃ na hi mē ṡuddhyatē manaḥ ॥
It is not clear to me what brings you here,
when you should be (happily) governing the kingdom!
Please tell me everything. Could anyone, anytime, anywhere in the world, ask this kind of question to the ruler of the land? Certainly the times of Rāmāyaṇa, idealized or real, were set to a different standard.
2.90.11-13 ஸுஷுவே யமமித்ரக்நம் கௌஸல்யாநऽந்தவர்தநம் ।
ப்ராத்ரா ஸஹ ஸபார்யோ யஸ்சிரம் ப்ரவ்ராஜிதோ வநம் ॥
நியுக்த: ஸ்த்ரீநியுக்தேந பித்ரா யோऽஸௌ மஹாயஸா: ।
வநவாஸீ பவேதீஹ ஸமா: கில சதுர்தஸ ॥
கச்சிந்ந தஸ்யாபாபஸ்ய பாபம் கர்துமிஹேச்சஸி ।
அகண்டகம் போக்துமநா ராஜ்யம் தஸ்யாநுஜஸ்ய ச ॥
suṣuvē yamamitraghnaṃ kausalyāna'ndavardhanam ।
bhrātrā saha sabhāryō yaṡciraṃ pravrājitō vanam ॥
niyuktaḥ strīniyuktēna pitrā yō'sau mahāyaṡāḥ ।
vanavāsī bhavētīha samāḥ kila caturdaṡa ॥
kacchinna tasyāpāpasya pāpaṃ kartumihēcchasi ।
akaṇṭakaṃ bhōktumanā rājyaṃ tasyānujasya ca ॥
I hope you do not intend to harm Rāma –
whom Kousalyā gave birth to,
who is a harrier of the foe,
who makes everyone cheerful,
who along with his brother and wife
went in long exile to the Vana,
who was told to live in the Vana for fourteen years
by his father at the prompting of a woman
- and Lakshmaṇa, so that you can
enjoy the kingdom without any detractors!
2.90.14 ஏவமுக்தோ பரத்வாஜம் பரத: ப்ரத்யுவாச ஹ ।
பர்யஸ்ருநயநோ து:காத்வாசா ஸம்ஸஜ்ஜமாநயா ॥
ēvamuktō bharadvājaṃ bharataḥ pratyuvāca ha ।
paryaṡrunayanō duḥkhādvācā saṃsajjamānayā ॥
Thus asked by Bharadwāja, Bharata felt sad and replied
in a stumbling voice, as tears filled his eyes:
2.90.15 ஹதோऽஸ்மி யதி மாமேவம் பகவாநபி மந்யதே ।
மத்தோ ந தோஷமாஸங்கே நைவம் மாமநுஸாஸ்து ஹி ॥
hatō'smi yadi māmēvaṃ bhagavānapi manyatē ।
mattō na dōṣamāṡaṅkē naivaṃ māmanuṡāstu hi ॥
I consider myself dead, should
a Bhagawan like you think of me thus!
I do not consider it to be my fault.
May you not rebuke me like this!
2.90.16 ந சைததிஷ்டம் மாதா மே யதவோசந்மதந்தரே ।
நாஹமேதேந துஷ்டஸ்ச ந தத்வசநமாததே ॥
na caitadiṣṭaṃ mātā mē yadavōcanmadantarē ।
nāhamētēna tuṣṭaṡca na tadvacanamādadē ॥
I do not like whatever my mother said when I was away.
Neither was I happy about it, nor did I approve it.
2.90.17 அஹம் து தம் நரவ்யாக்ரமுபயாத: ப்ரஸாதக: ।
ப்ரதிநேதுமயோத்யாம் ச பாதௌ தஸ்யாபிவந்திதும் ॥
ahaṃ tu taṃ naravyāghramupayātaḥ prasādakaḥ ।
pratinētumayōdhyāṃ ca pādau tasyābhivanditum ॥
I just want to bow to the feet of that tiger among men
to earn his grace and bring him back to Ayōdhyā.
2.90.18 த்வம் மாமேவம்கதம் மத்வா ப்ரஸாதம் கர்துமர்ஹஸி ।
ஸம்ஸ மே பகவந்ராம: க்வ ஸம்ப்ரதி மஹீபதி: ॥
tvaṃ māmēvaṃgataṃ matvā prasādaṃ kartumarhasi ।
ṡaṃsa mē bhagavanrāmaḥ kva samprati mahīpatiḥ ॥
Please understand my situation and show grace on me.
Please tell me where Rāma, the lord of the land, is now.
2.90.19 வஸிஷ்டாதிபி: ருத்விக்பிர்யாசிதோ பகவாம்ஸ்தத: ।
உவாச தம் பரத்வாஜ: ப்ரஸாதாத்பரதம் வச:॥
vaṡiṣṭhādibhiḥ ṛtvigbhiryācitō bhagavāṃstataḥ ।
uvāca taṃ bharadvājaḥ prasādādbharataṃ vacaḥ॥
Then, implored by Ṛtviks like Vasishṭha,
Bhagawan Bharadwāja kindly said these words to Bharata:
2.90.20 த்வய்யேதத்புருஷவ்யாக்ர யுக்தம் ராகவவம்ஸஜே ।
குருவ்ருத்திர்தமஸ்சைவ ஸாதூநாமநுயாயிதா ॥
tvayyētatpuruṣavyāghra yuktaṃ rāghavavaṃṡajē ।
guruvṛttirdamaṡcaiva sādhūnāmanuyāyitā ॥
Such conduct, O tiger among men, is becoming
of one born in the family of the Raghus -
obedience to elders, self-restraint and
and taking good people as an example.
2.90.21 ஜாநே சைதந்மநத்ஸ்தம் தே த்ருடீகரணமஸ்த்விதி ।
அப்ருச்சம் த்வாம் ததாऽத்யர்தம் கீர்திம் ஸமபிவர்தயந் ॥
jānē caitanmanatsthaṃ tē dṛḍhīkaraṇamastviti ।
apṛcchaṃ tvāṃ tathā'tyarthaṃ kīrtiṃ samabhivardhayan ॥
I knew what is on your mind,
but asked only to reconfirm and
to add to your renown.
2.90.22 ஜாநே ச ராமம் தர்மஜ்ஞம் ஸஸீதம் ஸஹலக்ஷ்மணம் ।
அஸௌ வஸதி தே ப்ராதா சித்ரகூடே மஹாகிரௌ ॥
jānē ca rāmaṃ dharmajñaṃ sasītaṃ sahalakṣmaṇam ।
asau vasati tē bhrātā citrakūṭē mahāgirau ॥
I know where Rāma, the Dharmajña, is,
along with Seetā and Lakshmaṇa.
He, your brother, lives in the great mount of Citrakūṭa.
2.90.23 ஸ்வஸ்து கந்தாஸி தம் தேஸம் வஸாத்ய ஸஹ மந்த்ரிபி: ।
ஏதந்மே குரு ஸுப்ராஜ்ஞ காமம் காமார்தகோவித ॥
ṡvastu gantāsi taṃ dēṡaṃ vasādya saha mantribhiḥ ।
ētanmē kuru suprājña kāmaṃ kāmārthakōvida ॥
You may go to that place tomorrow,
but stay here, along with your ministers, for today.
May you fulfill this wish of mine;
you know all about wishes and pursuits of life.
2.90.24 ததஸ்ததேத்யேவமுதாரதர்ஸந:
ப்ரதீதரூபோ பரதோऽப்ரவீத்வச: ।
சகார புத்திம் ச ததா ததாஸ்ரமே
நிஸாநிவாஸாய நராதிபாऽத்மஜ: ॥
tatastathētyēvamudāradarṡanaḥ
pratītarūpō bharatō'bravīdvacaḥ ।
cakāra buddhiṃ ca tadā tadāṡramē
niṡānivāsāya narādhipā'tmajaḥ ॥
The pleased Bharata, being the
considerate one he was, said, ‘may it be so!’.
That prince then decided to
stay at the Āṡrama for the night.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே நவதிதமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē navatitamassargaḥ ॥
This is the end of the ninetieth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
