Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 89
In this short Sarga, Bharata and his entourage cross the river Gaṅgā ferried by the fisherman. After dispersing the army and camping at Prayāga Vana, Bharata goes to the Āṡrama of Ṛshi Bharadwāja to visit him.
2.89.1 உஷ்ய ராத்ரிம் து தத்ரைவ கங்காகூலே ஸ ராகவ: ।
பரத: கால்யமுத்தாய ஸத்ருக்நமிதமப்ரவீத் ॥
uṣya rātriṃ tu tatraiva gaṅgākūlē sa rāghavaḥ ।
bharataḥ kālyamutthāya ṡatrughnamidamabravīt ॥
Bharata the descendent of Rāghava
spent the night there on the banks of Gaṅgā.
Rising at day-break, he said to Ṡatrughna:
2.89.2 ஸத்ருக்நோத்திஷ்ட கிம் ஸேஷே நிஷாதாதிபதிம் குஹம் ।
ஸீக்ரமாநய பத்ரம் தே தாரயிஷ்யதி வாஹிநீம் ॥
ṡatrughnōttiṣṭha kiṃ ṡēṣē niṣādādhipatiṃ guham ।
ṡīghramānaya bhadraṃ tē tārayiṣyati vāhinīm ॥
Ṡatrughna, are you still sleeping?
Please get up and quickly fetch Guha, the tribal chief.
May all bode well for you! We shall cross the river.
2.89.3 ஜாகர்மி நாஹம் ஸ்வபிமி தமேவாऽர்யம் விசிந்தயந் ।
இத்யேவமப்ரவீத்ப்ராத்தா ஸத்ருக்நோऽபி ப்ரசோதித: ॥
jāgarmi nāhaṃ svapimi tamēvā'ryaṃ vicintayan ।
ityēvamabravīdbhrāttā ṡatrughnō'pi pracōditaḥ ॥
Urged thus, Ṡatrughna responded saying:
‘No, I am not sleeping.
I was awake thinking of the noble one!’
2.89.4 இதி ஸம்வததோரேவமந்யோந்யம் நரஸிம்ஹயோ: ।
ஆகம்ய ப்ராஞ்ஜலி: காலே குஹோ பரதமப்ரவீத் ॥
iti saṃvadatōrēvamanyōnyaṃ narasiṃhayōḥ ।
āgamya prāñjaliḥ kālē guhō bharatamabravīt ॥
While the tigers among men were talking thus,
Guha came in time and said to Bharata with palms joined:
2.89.5 கச்சித்ஸுகம் நதீதீரேऽவாத்ஸீ: காகுத்ஸ்த ஸர்வரீம் ।
கச்சித்தே ஸஹ ஸைந்யஸ்ய தாவத்ஸர்வமநாமயம் ॥
kaccitsukhaṃ nadītīrē'vātsīḥ kākutstha ṡarvarīm ।
kaccittē saha sainyasya tāvatsarvamanāmayam ॥
I hope, O Kākutstha, you had a comfortable night
staying on the banks of the river!
And I hope you and your army
did not experience any problems!
2.89.6 குஹஸ்ய வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா தத்து ஸ்நேஹாதுதீரிதம் ।
ராமஸ்யாநுவஸோ வாக்யம் பரதோऽபீதமப்ரவீத் ॥
guhasya vacanaṃ ṡrutvā tattu snēhādudīritam ।
rāmasyānuvaṡō vākyaṃ bharatō'pīdamabravīt ॥
Hearing those words of Guha
that were spoken out of affection,
Bharata, who was devoted to Rāma, said:
2.89.7 ஸுகா நஸ்ஸர்வரீ ராஜந்! பூஜிதாஸ்சாபி தே வயம் ।
கங்காம் து நௌபிர்பஹ்வீபிர்தாஸாஸ்ஸந்தாரயந்து ந: ॥
sukhā naṡṡarvarī rājan! pūjitāṡcāpi tē vayam ।
gaṅgāṃ tu naubhirbahvībhirdāṡāssantārayantu naḥ ॥
All of us, O King, had a comfortable night.
We have also been amply honored by you.
May the fishermen bring many boats
and ferry us across river Gaṅgā!
2.89.8 ததோ குஹஸ்ஸந்த்வரிதம் ஸ்ருத்வா பரதஸாஸநம் ।
ப்ரதி ப்ரவிஸ்ய நகரம் தம் ஜ்ஞாதிஜநமப்ரவீத் ॥
tatō guhassantvaritaṃ ṡrutvā bharataṡāsanam ।
prati praviṡya nagaraṃ taṃ jñātijanamabravīt ॥
Hearing that order of Bharata who wanted to hurry,
Guha returned to his city and said to his kinsmen:
2.89.9 உத்திஷ்டத ப்ரபுத்யத்வம் பத்ரமஸ்து ச வஸ்ஸதா ।
நாவஸ்ஸமநுகர்ஷத்வம் தாரயிஷ்யாம வாஹிநீம் ॥
uttiṣṭhata prabudhyadhvaṃ bhadramastu ca vassadā ।
nāvassamanukarṣadhvaṃ tārayiṣyāma vāhinīm ॥
Please arise! Awake! May all bode well for you always!
Haul down the boats, we shall ferry (the army) across the river.
2.89.10 தே ததோக்தாஸ்ஸமுத்தாய த்வரிதா ராஜஸாஸநாத் ।
பஞ்சநாவாம் ஸதாந்யாஸு ஸமாநிந்யுஸ்ஸமந்தத: ॥
tē tathōktāssamutthāya tvaritā rājaṡāsanāt ।
pañcanāvāṃ ṡatānyāṡu samāninyussamantataḥ ॥
The command of the king having been thus conveyed,
they arose immediately and brought
five hundred boats from everywhere.
2.89.11 அந்யாஸ்ஸ்வஸ்திகவிஜ்ஞேயா மஹாகம்டாதரா வரா: ।
ஸோபமாநா: பதாகாபிர்யுக்தவாதாஸ்ஸுஸம்ஹதா: ॥
anyāssvastikavijñēyā mahāghaṃṭādharā varāḥ ।
ṡōbhamānāḥ patākābhiryuktavātāssusaṃhatāḥ ॥
They also brought excellent, well made
sail boats known as Swastikas,
that were splendid with large bells and flags.
2.89.12 ததஸ்ஸ்வஸ்திகவிஜ்ஞேயாம் பாண்டுகம்பலஸம்வ்ருதாம் ।
ஸநந்திகோஷாம் கல்யாணீம் குஹோ நாவமுபாஹரத் ॥
tatassvastikavijñēyāṃ pāṇḍukambalasaṃvṛtām ।
sanandighōṣāṃ kalyāṇīṃ guhō nāvamupāharat ॥
Then Guha brought another auspicious Swastika boat
that was covered with white canvas,
making pleasant jingling sounds.
2.89.13-14 தாமாருரோஹ பரதஸ்ஸத்ருக்நஸ்ச மஹாபல: ।
கௌஸல்யா ச ஸுமித்ரா ச யாஸ்சாந்யா ராஜயோஷித: ॥
புரோஹிதஸ்ச தத்பூர்வம் குரவோ ப்ராஹ்மணாஸ்ச யே ।
அநந்தரம் ராஜதாராஸ்ததைவ ஸகடாபணா: ॥
tāmārurōha bharataṡṡatrughnaṡca mahābalaḥ ।
kausalyā ca sumitrā ca yāṡcānyā rājayōṣitaḥ ॥
purōhitaṡca tatpūrvaṃ guravō brāhmaṇāṡca yē ।
anantaraṃ rājadārāstadaiva ṡakaṭāpaṇāḥ ॥
Bharata boarded that boat along
with mighty strong Ṡatrughna and
Kousalyā and Sumitrā and the king’s other women.
The Purōhitas, elders and Brāhmaṇas had already boarded.
Then the other women of the palace followed,
and the carts and supplies were loaded.
2.89.15 ஆவாஸமாதீபயதாம் தீர்தம் சாப்யவகாஹதாம் ।
பாண்டாநி சாததாநாநாம் கோஷஸ்த்ரிதிவமஸ்ப்ருஸத் ॥
āvāsamādīpayatāṃ tīrthaṃ cāpyavagāhatām ।
bhāṇḍāni cādadānānāṃ ghōṣastridivamaspṛṡat ॥
The din made by those who set fire to the camp sites,
those who rushed to the landing place and
those who transported the goods, touched the heaven.
2.89.16 பதாகிந்யஸ்து தா நாவஸ்ஸ்வயம் தாஸைரதிஷ்டிதா: ।
வஹந்த்யோ ஜநமாரூடம் ததா ஸம்பேதுராஸுகா: ॥
patākinyastu tā nāvassvayaṃ dāṡairadhiṣṭhitāḥ ।
vahantyō janamārūḍhaṃ tadā sampēturāṡugāḥ ॥
Those boats fitted with sails and
manned by the fishermen themselves,
rode swiftly on the water carrying
the people who were on board.
2.89.17 நாரீணாமபிபூர்ணா ஸ்து காஸ்சித் காஸ்சிச்ச வாஜிநாம் ।
காஸ்சிதத்ர வஹந்தி ஸ்ம யாநயுக்யம் மஹாதநம் ॥
nārīṇāmabhipūrṇā stu kāṡcit kāṡcicca vājinām ।
kāṡcidatra vahanti sma yānayugyaṃ mahādhanam ॥
Some of the boats were full of women.
Some were full of horses.
Some were carrying draught animals
and some, huge treasure chests.
2.89.18 தாஸ்ஸ்ம கத்வா பரம் தீரமவரோப்ய ச தம் ஜநம் ।
நிவ்ருத்தா: காண்டசித்ராணி க்ரியந்தே தாஸபந்துபி: ॥
tāssma gatvā paraṃ tīramavarōpya ca taṃ janam ।
nivṛttāḥ kāṇḍacitrāṇi kriyantē dāṡabandhubhiḥ ॥
Reaching the farther shore and offloading their passengers,
they on their way back were deployed
by the fishermen in various formations.
2.89.19 ஸவைஜயந்தாஸ்து கஜா கஜாரோஹப்ரசோதிதா: ।
தரந்தஸ்ஸ்ம ப்ரகாஸந்தே ஸத்வஜா இவ பர்வதா: ॥
savaijayantāstu gajā gajārōhapracōditāḥ ।
tarantassma prakāṡantē sadhvajā iva parvatāḥ ॥
Crossing the river with mahouts goading them,
the elephants looked splendid, like mountains with banners.
2.89.20 நாவஸ்த்வாருருஹுஸ்சாந்யே ப்லவைஸ்தேருஸ்ததாபரே ।
அந்யே கும்பகடைஸ்தேருரந்யேதேருஸ்ச பாஹுபி: ॥
nāvastvāruruhuṡcānyē plavaistērustathāparē ।
anyē kumbhaghaṭaistēruranyētēruṡca bāhubhiḥ ॥
Some people crossed by boats, others by rafts;
some using pots, others with their arms.
2.89.21 ஸா புண்யா த்வஜிநீ கங்காம் தாஸைஸ்ஸந்தாரிதா ஸ்வயம் ।
மைத்ரே முஹூர்தே ப்ரயயௌ ப்ரயாகவநமுத்தமம் ॥
sā puṇyā dhvajinī gaṅgāṃ dāṡaissantāritā svayam ।
maitrē muhūrtē prayayau prayāgavanamuttamam ॥
That auspicious army, ferried across
the river Gaṅgā by the fishermen,
reached the great Prayāga Vana by the hour of Maitra.
2.89.22 ஆஸ்வாஸயித்வா ச சமூம் மஹாத்மா
நிவேஸயித்வா ச யதோபஜோஷம் ।
த்ரஷ்டும் பரத்வாஜம்ருஷிப்ரவர்ய
ம்ருத்விக்வ்ருதஸ்ஸந்பரத: ப்ரதஸ்தே ॥
āṡvāsayitvā ca camūṃ mahātmā
nivēṡayitvā ca yathōpajōṣam ।
draṣṭuṃ bharadvājamṛṣipravarya
mṛtvigvṛtassanbharataḥ pratasthē ॥
After dispersing the army and camping comfortably,
Mahātma Bharata, along with Ṛtviks set out to visit
Bharadwāja, the eminent Ṛshi.
2.89.23 ஸ ப்ராஹ்மணஸ்யாऽஸ்ரமமப்யுபேத்ய
மஹாத்மநோ தேவபுரோஹிதஸ்ய ।
ததர்ஸ ரம்யோடஜவ்ருக்ஷஷண்டம்
மஹத்வநம் விப்ரவரஸ்ய ரம்யம் ॥
sa brāhmaṇasyā'ṡramamabhyupētya
mahātmanō dēvapurōhitasya ।
dadarṡa ramyōṭajavṛkṣaṣaṇḍaṃ
mahadvanaṃ vipravarasya ramyam ॥
Reaching the Āṡrama of that Brāhmaṇa,
a Mahātma and the Purōhita of Dēvas,
he saw the enchanting great Vana of that eminent Brāhmaṇa,
with its delightful huts and groves.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே ஏகோநநவதிதமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē ēkōnanavatitamassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the eighty ninth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
