Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 86
In this short Sarga, Guha narrates to Bharata the conversation he had with Lakshmaṇa during the night when Rāma, Lakshmaṇa and Seetā stayed on the banks of the river Gaṅgā on their way to Vana.
2.86.1 ஆசசக்ஷேऽத ஸத்பாவம் லக்ஷ்மணஸ்ய மஹாத்மந: ।
பரதாயாப்ரமேயாய குஹோ கஹநகோசர: ॥
ācacakṣē'tha sadbhāvaṃ lakṣmaṇasya mahātmanaḥ ।
bharatāyāpramēyāya guhō gahanagōcaraḥ ॥
Then Guha, the dweller of the forest,
narrated the good nature of Mahātma Lakshmaṇa
to Bharata of immeasurable virtues.
2.86.2 தம் ஜாக்ரதம் குணைர்யுக்தம் ஸரசாபாஸிதாரிணம் ।
ப்ராத்ருகுப்த்யர்தமத்யந்தமஹம் லக்ஷ்மணமப்ருவம் ॥
taṃ jāgrataṃ guṇairyuktaṃ ṡaracāpāsidhāriṇam ।
bhrātṛguptyarthamatyantamahaṃ lakṣmaṇamabruvam ॥
I said to Lakshmaṇa of virtuous qualities,
who was awake armed with bow, arrow and sword,
keeping unremitting vigil for the protection of his brother:
2.86.3 இயம் தாத ஸுகா ஸய்யா த்வதர்தமுபகல்பிதா ।
ப்ரத்யாஸ்வஸிஹி ஸேஷ்வாஸ்யாம் ஸுகம் ராகவநந்தந ॥
iyaṃ tāta sukhā ṡayyā tvadarthamupakalpitā ।
pratyāṡvasihi ṡēṣvāsyāṃ sukhaṃ rāghavanandana ॥
My dear son! Here is a comfortable bed ready for you.
O delight of the Raghus, sleep comfortably
keeping aside all worries.
2.86.4 உசிதோऽயம் ஜநஸ்ஸர்வோ து:காநாம் த்வம் ஸுகோசித: ।
தர்மாத்மம்ஸ்தஸ்ய குப்த்யர்தம் ஜாகரிஷ்யாமஹே வயம் ॥
ucitō'yaṃ janassarvō duḥkhānāṃ tvaṃ sukhōcitaḥ ।
dharmātmaṃstasya guptyarthaṃ jāgariṣyāmahē vayam ॥
O Dharmātma! You are used to a life of comfort,
whereas all these people are used to a life of hardship.
We will stay awake and watch over him.
2.86.5 நஹி ராமாத்ப்ரியதரோ மமாஸ்தி புவி கஸ்சந ।
மோத்ஸுகோऽபூர்ப்ரவீம்யேததப்யஸத்யம் தவாக்ரத: ॥
nahi rāmātpriyatarō mamāsti bhuvi kaṡcana ।
mōtsukō'bhūrbravīmyētadapyasatyaṃ tavāgrataḥ ॥
There is no one on this earth who is dearer to me than Rāma.
Hence you should not have any apprehensions.
Believe me, I am telling nothing but truth.
2.86.6 அஸ்ய ப்ரஸாதாதாஸம்ஸே லோகேऽஸ்மிந் ஸுமஹத்யஸ: ।
தர்மாவாப்திம் ச விபுலாமர்தகாமௌ ச கேவலம் ॥
asya prasādādāṡaṃsē lōkē'smin sumahadyaṡaḥ ।
dharmāvāptiṃ ca vipulāmarthakāmau ca kēvalam ॥
It is only by his grace that I hope to
earn a good name in this world,
stick to Dharma, gain prosperity
and enjoy the pleasures of life.
2.86.7 ஸோऽஹம் ப்ரியஸகம் ராமம் ஸயாநம் ஸஹ ஸீதயா ।
ரக்ஷிஷ்யாமி தநுஷ்பாணிஸ்ஸர்வைஸ்ஸ்வைர்ஜ்ஞாபிஸ்ஸஹ ॥
sō'haṃ priyasakhaṃ rāmaṃ ṡayānaṃ saha sītayā ।
rakṣiṣyāmi dhanuṣpāṇissarvaissvairjñābhissaha ॥
I will guard Rāma, such a good friend of mine,
who is asleep along with Seetā,
with bow in my hand and
with the aid of all my kinsmen.
2.86.8 ந ஹி மேऽவிதிதம் கிஞ்சித்வநேऽஸ்மிம்ஸ்சரதஸ்ஸதா ।
சதுரங்கம் ஹ்யபி பலம் ப்ரஸஹேம வயம் யுதி ॥
na hi mē'viditaṃ kiñcidvanē'smiṃṡcaratassadā ।
caturaṅgaṃ hyapi balaṃ prasahēma vayaṃ yudhi ॥
I move about in this forest all the time,
and there is nothing that I am not familiar with here.
We can hold even an army equipped with
all the four divisions, in a battle.
2.86.9 ஏவமஸ்மாபிருக்தேந லக்ஷ்மணேந மஹாத்மநா ।
அநுநீதா வயம் ஸர்வே தர்மமேவாநுபஸ்யதா ॥
ēvamasmābhiruktēna lakṣmaṇēna mahātmanā ।
anunītā vayaṃ sarvē dharmamēvānupaṡyatā ॥
Hearing us say this, Mahātma Lakshmaṇa,
guided solely by Dharma, implored us saying:
2.86.10 கதம் தாஸரதௌ பூமௌ ஸயாநே ஸஹா ஸீதாயா ।
ஸக்யா நித்ரா மயா லப்தும் ஜீவிதம் வா ஸுகாநி வா ॥
kathaṃ dāṡarathau bhūmau ṡayānē sahā sītāyā ।
ṡakyā nidrā mayā labdhuṃ jīvitaṃ vā sukhāni vā ॥
How can I think of sleep when this
son of Daṡaratha lies on the ground with Seetā,
much less think of enjoying life or seeking comfort?
2.86.11 யோ ந தேவாஸுரைஸ்ஸர்வைஸ்ஸக்ய: ப்ரஸஹிதும் யுதி ।
தம் பஸ்ய குஹ! ஸம்விஷ்டம் த்ருணேஷு ஸஹ ஸீதயா ॥
yō na dēvāsuraissarvaiṡṡakyaḥ prasahituṃ yudhi ।
taṃ paṡya guha! saṃviṣṭaṃ tṛṇēṣu saha sītayā ॥
See, Guha, how he, for whom
all the Dēvatas and Asuras combined
are no match in a battle,
lies on this bed of grass along with Seetā!
2.86.12 மஹதா தபஸா லப்தோ விவிதைஸ்ச பரிஸ்ரமை: ।
ஏகோ தஸரதஸ்யைஷ புத்ரஸ்ஸத்ருஸலக்ஷண: ॥
mahatā tapasā labdhō vividhaiṡca pariṡramaiḥ ।
ēkō daṡarathasyaiṣa putrassadṛṡalakṣaṇaḥ ॥
Daṡaratha got this son of great virtues,
by virtue of great Tapa and efforts of every kind.
2.86.13 அஸ்மிந்ப்ரவ்ராஜிதே ராஜா ந சிரம் வர்தயிஷ்யதி ।
விதவா மேதிநீ நூநம் க்ஷிப்ரமேவ பவிஷ்யதி ॥
asminpravrājitē rājā na ciraṃ vartayiṣyati ।
vidhavā mēdinī nūnaṃ kṣipramēva bhaviṣyati ॥
The King will not survive long with him going into exile;
the earth will certainly become a widow in no time.
2.86.14 விநத்ய ஸுமஹாநாதம் ஸ்ரமேணோபரதா: ஸ்த்ரிய: ।
நிர்கோஷோ விரதோ நூநமத்ய ராஜநிவேஸநே ॥
vinadya sumahānādaṃ ṡramēṇōparatāḥ striyaḥ ।
nirghōṣō viratō nūnamadhya rājanivēṡanē ॥
The din of the royal palace
must surely have subsided by now,
with the women’s loud clamor suppressed
by their own exhaustion.
2.86.15 கௌஸல்யா சைவ ராஜா ச ததைவ ஜநநீ மம ।
நாஸம்ஸே யதி ஜீவேயுஸ்ஸர்வே தே ஸர்வரீமிமாம் ॥
kausalyā caiva rājā ca tathaiva jananī mama ।
nāṡaṃsē yadi jīvēyussarvē tē ṡarvarīmimām ॥
I doubt very much whether Kousalyā and the King,
and my mother likewise, will live through this night.
2.86.16 ஜீவேதபி ச மே மாதா ஸத்ருக்நஸ்யாந்வவேக்ஷயா ।
து:கிதா யா து கௌஸல்யா வீரஸூர்விநஸிஷ்யதி ॥
jīvēdapi ca mē mātā ṡatrughnasyānvavēkṣayā ।
duḥkhitā yā tu kausalyā vīrasūrvinaṡiṣyati ॥
My mother might survive looking up to Ṡatrughna,
but Kousalyā, mother of the heroic son,
will perish out of grief!
2.86.17 அதிக்ராந்தமதிக்ராந்தமநவாப்ய மநோரதம் ।
ராஜ்யே ராமமநிக்ஷிப்ய பிதா மே விநஸிஷ்யதி ॥
atikrāntamatikrāntamanavāpya manōratham ।
rājyē rāmamanikṣipya pitā mē vinaṡiṣyati ॥
With his wishes undone one by one,
unable to place Rāma on the throne,
my father will perish.
2.86.18 ஸித்தார்தா: பிதரம் வ்ருத்தம் தஸ்மிந்காலே ஹ்யுபஸ்திதே ।
ப்ரேதகார்யேஷு ஸர்வேஷு ஸம்ஸ்கரிஷ்யந்தி பூமிபம் ॥
siddhārthāḥ pitaraṃ vṛttaṃ tasminkālē hyupasthitē ।
prētakāryēṣu sarvēṣu saṃskariṣyanti bhūmipam ॥
Blessed are those who will be there
when my father passes away,
for they would be able to perform
the last rites of the king.
2.86.19-21 ரம்யசத்வரஸம்ஸ்தாநாம் ஸுவிபக்தமஹாபதாம் ।
ஹர்ம்யப்ராஸாத ஸம்பந்நாம் ஸர்வரத்நவிபூஷிதாம் ॥
கஜாஸ்வரதஸம்பாதாம் தூர்யநாதவிநாதிதாம் ।
ஸர்வகல்யாணஸம்பூர்ணாம் ஹ்ருஷ்டபுஷ்டஜநாகுலாம் ॥
ஆராமோத்யாநஸம்பூர்ணாம் ஸமாஜோத்ஸவஸாலிநீம் ।
ஸுகிதா விசரிஷ்யந்தி ராஜதாநீம் பிதுர்மம ॥
ramyacatvarasaṃsthānāṃ suvibhaktamahāpathām ।
harmyaprāsāda saṃpannāṃ sarvaratnavibhūṣitām ॥
gajāṡvarathasaṃbādhāṃ tūryanādavināditām ।
sarvakalyāṇasaṃpūrṇāṃ hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanākulām ॥
ārāmōdyānasaṃpūrṇāṃ samājōtsavaṡālinīm ।
sukhitā vicariṣyanti rājadhānīṃ piturmama ॥
(Blessed are those) who move about happily
in the capital city of my father,
with its fine houses with well-placed courtyards,
its well divided major highways,
its mansions and palaces encrusted
with every kind of precious stone,
which teems with elephants, horses and chariots,
resounds with the sounds of trumpets,
and is filled with auspiciousness everywhere,
thronged by delighted and prosperous people,
full of pleasure gardens and parks
and festive with community celebrations.
2.86.22 அபிஸத்யப்ரதிஜ்ஞேந ஸார்தம் குஸலிநா வயம் ।
நிவ்ருத்தே ஸமயே ஹ்யஸ்மிந் ஸுகிதா: ப்ரவிஸேமஹி ॥
apisatyapratijñēna sārdhaṃ kuṡalinā vayaṃ ।
nivṛttē samayē hyasmin sukhitāḥ praviṡēmahi ॥
Would we reenter Ayōdhyā happily at the end
along with him, after he makes
good of his word and remains safe?
2.86.23 பரிதேவயமாநஸ்ய தஸ்யைவம் ஸுமஹாத்மந: ।
திஷ்டதோ ராஜபுத்ரஸ்ய ஸர்வரீ ஸாऽத்யவர்தத ॥
paridēvayamānasya tasyaivaṃ sumahātmanaḥ ।
tiṣṭhatō rājaputrasya ṡarvarī sā'tyavartata ॥
The night passed, as that prince,
the illustrious Mahātma, stood there lamenting thus!
2.86.24 ப்ரபாதே விமலே ஸூர்யே காரயித்வா ஜடா உபௌ ।
அஸ்மிந் பாகீரதீதீரே ஸுகம் ஸந்தாரிதௌ மயா ॥
prabhātē vimalē sūryē kārayitvā jaṭā ubhau ।
asmin bhāgīrathītīrē sukhaṃ santāritau mayā ॥
When the sun rose in the clear sky in the morning,
they had their locks matted
on the very banks of this river Bhāgeerathi.
And then they were ferried across by me in all comfort.
2.86.25 ஜடாதரௌ தௌ த்ருமசீரவாஸஸௌ
மஹாபலௌ குஞ்ஜரயூதபோபமௌ ।
வரேஷுசாபாஸிதரௌ பரந்தபௌ
வ்யபேக்ஷமாணௌ ஸஹ ஸீதயா கதௌ ॥
jaṭādharau tau drumacīravāsasau
mahābalau kuñjarayūthapōpamau ।
varēṣucāpāsidharau parantapau
vyapēkṣamāṇau saha sītayā gatau ॥
That mighty strong duo, the harriers of the foe,
who are like the lead elephants of a herd,
proceeded with Seetā looking around vigilantly,
wearing matted locks and robes of bark and
armed with excellent bows, arrows and swords.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே ஷடஸீதிதமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē ṣaḍaṡītitamassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the eighty sixth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
