Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 85
In this Sarga, Bharata asks Guha for directions to reach the Āṡrama of Bharadwāja. Guha says he and his kinsmen would help him cross the river and guide him to the Āṡrama, but that he is suspicious of his intentions, because of the huge army accompanying him, that he might kill Rāma.
Bharata feels hurt and swears that he is going only to bring Rāma back from the Vana. Guha lauds Bharata for his exceptional sacrifice of giving up a kingdom that has come to him without effort.
Bharata goes to bed, but is unable escape the weight of his grief. He goes to Guha for solace.
2.85.1 ஏவமுக்தஸ்து பரதோ நிஷாதாதிபதிம் குஹம் ।
ப்ரத்யுவாச மஹாப்ராஜ்ஞோ வாக்யம் ஹேத்வர்தஸம்ஹிதம் ॥
ēvamuktastu bharatō niṣādādhipatiṃ guham ।
pratyuvāca mahāprājñō vākyaṃ hētvarthasaṃhitam ॥
Thus addressed by the tribal chief,
the sagacious Bharata responded saying
these reasonable and meaningful words:
2.85.2 ஊர்ஜித: கலு தே காம: க்ருதோ மம குரோஸ்ஸகே ।
யோ மே த்வமீத்ருஸீம் ஸேநாமேகோऽப்யர்சிதுமிச்சஸி ॥
ūrjitaḥ khalu tē kāmaḥ kṛtō mama gurōssakhē ।
yō mē tvamīdṛṡīṃ sēnāmēkō'bhyarcitumicchasi ॥
O dear friend of my revered brother,
your thought of serving this entire army
all by yourself is laudable.
2.85.3 இத்யுக்த்வா து மஹாதேஜா குஹம் வசநமுத்தமம் ।
அப்ரவீத்பரதஸ்ஸ்ரீமாநநிஷாதாதிபதிம் புந: ॥
ityuktvā tu mahātējā guhaṃ vacanamuttamam ।
abravīdbharataṡṡrīmānaniṣādādhipatiṃ punaḥ ॥
The supremely radiant and magnificent Bharata,
after saying those graceful words, went on to ask:
2.85.4 கதரேண கமிஷ்யாமி பரத்வாஜாஸ்ரமம் குஹ ।
கஹநோऽயம் ப்ருஸம் தேஸோ கங்காऽநூபோ துரத்யய: ॥
katarēṇa gamiṣyāmi bharadvājāṡramaṃ guha ।
gahanō'yaṃ bhṛṡaṃ dēṡō gaṅgā'nūpō duratyayaḥ ॥
O Guha! How would I reach Bharadwāja’s Āṡrama!
This region, covered by the waters of Gaṅgā
is difficult to enter and pass through!
2.85.5 தஸ்ய தத்வசநம் ஸ்ருத்வா ராஜபுத்ரஸ்ய தீமத: ।
அப்ரவீத்ப்ராஞ்ஜலிர்வாக்யம் குஹோ கஹநகோசர: ॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ ṡrutvā rājaputrasya dhīmataḥ ।
abravītprāñjalirvākyaṃ guhō gahanagōcaraḥ ॥
Hearing those words of the sagacious prince,
Guha who treads in the wilderness,
answered with folded hands, saying:
2.85.6 தாஸாஸ்த்வாऽநுऽகமிஷ்யந்தி தந்விநஸ்ஸுஸமாஹிதா: ।
அஹம் த்வாநுகமிஷ்யாமி ராஜபுத்ர மஹாயஸ: ॥
dāṡāstvā'nu'gamiṣyanti dhanvinassusamāhitāḥ ।
ahaṃ tvānugamiṣyāmi rājaputra mahāyaṡaḥ ॥
Alert fishermen armed with bows will accompany you.
I shall also follow you, O prince of great renown!
2.85.7 கச்சிந்நதுஷ்டோ வ்ரஜஸி ராமஸ்யாக்லிஷ்டகர்மண: ।
இயம் தே மஹதீ ஸேநா ஸங்காம் ஜநயதீவ மே ॥
kacchinnaduṣṭō vrajasi rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ ।
iyaṃ tē mahatī sēnā ṡaṅkāṃ janayatīva mē ॥
I hope you are going without any evil intentions
towards Rāma for whom nothing is difficult;
for, this large army of yours raises my suspicion.
2.85.8 தமேவமபிபாஷந்தமாகாஸ இவ நிர்மல: ।
பரதஸ்ஸ்லக்ஷ்ணயா வாசா குஹம் வசநமப்ரவீத் ॥
tamēvamabhibhāṣantamākāṡa iva nirmalaḥ ।
bharataṡṡlakṣṇayā vācā guhaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥
To Guha who was speaking thus,
Bharata of the bearing of the pristine sky,
said these words ever so gently:
2.85.9 மாபூத்ஸ காலோ யத்கஷ்டம் ந மாம் ஸங்கிதுமர்ஹஸி ।
ராகவஸ்ஸஹி மே ப்ராதா ஜ்யேஷ்ட: பிதுஸமோ மத: ॥
mābhūtsa kālō yatkaṣṭaṃ na māṃ ṡaṅkitumarhasi ।
rāghavassahi mē bhrātā jyēṣṭhaḥ pitusamō mataḥ ॥
May that day never dawn that will
see such a terrible thing happen!
You shall not suspect me, for I look upon
Rāghava, my elder brother, as my father.
2.85.10 தம் நிவர்தயிதும் யாமி காகுத்ஸ்தம் வநவாஸிநம் ।
புத்திரந்யா ந தே கார்யா குஹ ஸத்யம் ப்ரவீமி தே ॥
taṃ nivartayituṃ yāmi kākutsthaṃ vanavāsinam ।
buddhiranyā na tē kāryā guha satyaṃ bravīmi tē ॥
I am going only to bring back Kākutstha
who is dwelling in the Vana now.
You should not mistake this in any other way,
for I am telling you the truth. The character of Bharata deserves sympathy like none other. Everyone lived fourteen years of terrible life. But living it under the long shadow of suspicion is, perhaps, the most terrible.
2.85.11 ஸ து ஸம்ஹ்ருஷ்டவதநஸ்ஸ்ருத்வா பரதபாஷிதம் ।
புநரேவாப்ரவீத்வாக்யம் பரதம் ப்ரதி ஹர்ஷித: ॥
sa tu saṃhṛṣṭavadanaṡṡrutvā bharatabhāṣitam ।
punarēvābravīdvākyaṃ bharataṃ prati harṣitaḥ ॥
He was overjoyed to hear what Bharata said,
and again told him these words with a beaming face:
2.85.12 தந்யஸ்த்வம் ந த்வயா துல்யம் பஸ்யாமி ஜகதீதலே ।
அயத்நாதாகதம் ராஜ்யம் யஸ்த்வம் த்யக்துமிஹேச்சஸி ॥
dhanyastvaṃ na tvayā tulyaṃ paṡyāmi jagatītalē ।
ayatnādāgataṃ rājyaṃ yastvaṃ tyaktumihēcchasi ॥
You are supremely blessed.
I cannot think of your equal on earth;
you wish to give up the kingdom
that came to you without any effort.
2.85.13 ஸாஸ்வதீ கலு தே கீர்திர்லோகாநநுசரிஷ்யதி ।
யஸ்த்வம் க்ருச்ச்ரகதம் ராமம் ப்ரத்யாநயிதுமிச்சஸி ॥
ṡāṡvatī khalu tē kīrtirlōkānanucariṣyati ।
yastvaṃ kṛcchragataṃ rāmaṃ pratyānayitumicchasi ॥
Your fame shall last forever in the worlds,
since you wish to bring back Rāma
who has fallen into difficult times.
2.85.14 ஏவம் ஸம்பாஷமாணஸ்ய குஹஸ்ய பரதம் ததா ।
பபௌ நஷ்டப்ரபஸ்ஸூர்யோ ரஜநீ சாப்யவர்தத ॥
ēvaṃ sambhāṣamāṇasya guhasya bharataṃ tadā ।
babhau naṣṭaprabhassūryō rajanī cābhyavartata ॥
As Guha was thus conversing with Bharata,
the sun shined with diminished light,
and the night descended.
2.85.15 ஸம்நிவேஸ்ய ஸ தாம் ஸேநாம் குஹேந பரிதோஷித: ।
ஸத்ருக்நேந ஸஹ ஸ்ரீமாஞ்சயநம் ஸமுபாகமத் ॥
saṃnivēṡya sa tāṃ sēnāṃ guhēna paritōṣitaḥ ।
ṡatrughnēna saha ṡrīmāñchayanaṃ samupāgamat ॥
Having disposed the army for the night,
and heartened by Guha’s gestures,
the blessed one went to bed, and so did Ṡatrughna.
2.85.16 ராமசிந்தாமயஸ்ஸோகோ பரதஸ்ய மஹாத்மந: ।
உபஸ்திதோ ஹ்யநர்ஹஸ்ய தர்மப்ரேக்ஷஸ்ய தாத்ருஸ: ॥
rāmacintāmayaṡṡōkō bharatasya mahātmanaḥ ।
upasthitō hyanarhasya dharmaprēkṣasya tādṛṡaḥ ॥
Grief engulfed the undeserving Mahātma Bharata,
who always abides by Dharma,
as the thoughts of Rāma seized him.
2.85.17 அந்தர்தாஹேந தஹநஸ்ஸந்தாபயதி ராகவம் ।
வநதாஹாபிஸந்தப்தம் கூடோऽக்நிரிவ பாதபம் ॥
antardāhēna dahanassantāpayati rāghavam ।
vanadāhābhisantaptaṃ gūḍhō'gniriva pādapam ॥
The fire of grief burnt the heart
of that scion of the Raghus from inside,
just as a tree in a scorched forest
is consumed by the fire in its hollow.
2.85.18 ப்ரஸ்ருதஸ்ஸர்வகாத்ரேப்யஸ்ஸ்வேதம் ஸோகாக்நிஸம்பவம் ।
யதா ஸூர்யாம்ஸுஸந்தப்தோ ஹிமவாந் ப்ரஸ்ருதோஹிமம் ॥
prasṛtassarvagātrēbhyassvēdaṃ ṡōkāgnisambhavam ।
yathā sūryāṃṡusantaptō himavān prasṛtōhimam ॥
Sweat flowed from each one of his limbs,
triggered by the fire of grief,
like melting ice flows from
(every peak and slope of) Himavān,
due to the scorching rays of the sun.
2.85.19-20 த்யாநநிர்தரஸைலேந விநிஸ்ஸ்வஸிததாதுநா ।
தைந்யபாதபஸம்கேந ஸோகாயாஸாதிஸ்ருங்கிணா ॥
ப்ரமோஹாநந்தஸத்த்வேந ஸந்தாபௌஷதிவேணுநா ।
ஆக்ராந்தோ து:கஸைலேந மஹதா கைகயீஸுத: ॥
dhyānanirdharaṡailēna viniṡṡvasitadhātunā ।
dainyapādapasaṃghēna ṡōkāyāsādhiṡṛṅgiṇā ॥
pramōhānantasattvēna santāpauṣadhivēṇunā ।
ākrāntō duḥkhaṡailēna mahatā kaikayīsutaḥ ॥
The son of Kaikēyee was crushed under
the weight of a mountain of suffering,
with its unbreakable boulders of unhappy broodings,
its minerals of sighs, its thickets of despondency,
its peaks of grief, fatigue and distress,
its infinite beasts of stupor and
its herbage and bamboo knots of pain.
2.85.21 விநிஸ்ஸ்வஸந்வை ப்ருஸதுர்மநாஸ்தத:
ப்ரமூடஸம்ஜ்ஞ: பரமாபதம் கத: ।
ஸமம் ந லேபே ஹ்ருதயஜ்வரார்திதோ
நரர்ஷபோ யூதஹதோ யதர்ஷப: ॥
viniṡṡvasanvai bhṛṡadurmanāstataḥ
pramūḍhasaṃjñaḥ paramāpadaṃ gataḥ ।
ṡamaṃ na lēbhē hṛdayajvarārditō
nararṣabhō yūthahatō yatharṣabhaḥ ॥
Heaving great sighs, feeling extremely unhappy,
with his faculties numbed and heart aching with pain,
that bull among men could not find any solace,
thus stuck in a hard situation,
like a bull hounded by its herd.
2.85.22 குஹேந ஸார்தம் பரதஸ்ஸமாகதோ
மஹாநுபாவஸ்ஸஜநஸ்ஸமாஹித: ।
ஸுதுர்மநாஸ்தம் பரதம் ததா புந-
ர்குஹ ஸ்ஸமாஸ்வாஸயதக்ரஜம் ப்ரதி ॥
guhēna sārthaṃ bharatassamāgatō
mahānubhāvassajanassamāhitaḥ ।
sudurmanāstaṃ bharataṃ tadā puna-
rguha ssamāṡvāsayadagrajaṃ prati ॥
Then Bharata, of majestic personality,
unable to bear the distress.
went to Guha along with his people.
Guha consoled him with regard to his elder brother.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே பஞ்சாஸீதிதமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē pañcāṡītitamassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the eighty fifth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
