Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 83
This Sarga describes the first leg of Bharata’s journey to the Vana, from the city of Ayōdhyā to the river Gaṅgā, with his entourage consisting of family members, ministers, Purōhitas, people of various trades and leaders of all communities and groups. After reaching Gaṅgā, he instructs the army to camp for the night wherever they like on its vast banks, which are beautiful with rows of Cakravāka birds.
2.83.1 ததஸ்ஸமுத்தித: கால்யமாஸ்தாய ஸ்யந்தநோத்தமம் ।
ப்ரயயௌ பரதஸ்ஸீக்ரம் ராமதர்ஸநகாங்க்ஷயா ॥
tatassamutthitaḥ kālyamāsthāya syandanōttamam ।
prayayau bharataṡṡīghraṃ rāmadarṡanakāṅkṣayā ॥
Getting up at daybreak and getting on to a superb chariot,
Bharata went forth swiftly, longing to see Rāma.
2.83.2 அக்ரத: ப்ரயயுஸ்தஸ்ய ஸர்வே மந்த்ரிபுரோதஸ: ।
அதிருஹ்ய ஹயைர்யுக்தாந்ரதாந்ஸூர்யரதோபமாந் ॥
agrataḥ prayayustasya sarvē mantripurōdhasaḥ ।
adhiruhya hayairyuktānrathānsūryarathōpamān ॥
Ahead of him went all the ministers and Purōhitas,
riding in horse-drawn chariots,
which resembled the chariot of the sun.
2.83.3 நவநாகஸஹஸ்ராணி கல்பிதாநி யதாவிதி ।
அந்வயுர்பரதம் யாந்தமிக்ஷ்வாகுகுலநந்தநம் ॥
navanāgasahasrāṇi kalpitāni yathāvidhi ।
anvayurbharataṃ yāntamikṣvākukulanandanam ॥
Nine thousand elephants, marshaled in due order,
followed the journeying Bharata,
the delight of the Ikshwākus.
2.83.4 ஷஷ்டீ ரதஸஹஸ்ராணி தந்விநோ விவிதாயுதா: ।
அந்வயுர்பரதம் யாந்தம் ராஜபுத்ரம் யஸஸ்விநம் ॥
ṣaṣṭī rathasahasrāṇi dhanvinō vividhāyudhāḥ ।
anvayurbharataṃ yāntaṃ rājaputraṃ yaṡasvinam ॥
Sixty-thousand chariots and
archers holding weapons of various kinds
followed the renowned prince Bharata on the journey.
2.83.5 ஸதம் ஸஹஸ்ராண்யஸ்வாநாம் ஸமாரூடாநி ராகவம் ।
அந்வயுர்பரதம் யாந்தம் ஸத்யஸந்தம் ஜிதேந்த்ரியம் ॥
ṡataṃ sahasrāṇyaṡvānāṃ samārūḍhāni rāghavam ।
anvayurbharataṃ yāntaṃ satyasandhaṃ jitēndriyam ॥
A hundred thousand mounted horses accompanied Bharata,
the scion of the Raghus, who was wedded to truth and
had mastered his senses, on his journey.
2.83.6 கைகேயீ ச ஸுமித்ரா ச கௌஸல்யா ச யஸஸ்விநீ ।
ராமாநயநஸம்ஹ்ருஷ்டா யயுர்யாநேந பாஸ்வதா ॥
kaikēyī ca sumitrā ca kausalyā ca yaṡasvinī ।
rāmānayanasaṃhṛṣṭā yayuryānēna bhāsvatā ॥
Kaikēyee, Sumitrā and the renowned Kousalyā,
delighted to hear that Rāma was to be fetched back,
went in splendid vehicles.
2.83.7 ப்ரயாதாஸ்சார்யஸங்காதா ராமம் த்ரஷ்டும் ஸலக்ஷ்மணம் ।
தஸ்யைவ ச கதாஸ்சித்ரா: குர்வாணா ஹ்ருஷ்டமாநஸா: ॥
prayātāṡcāryasaṅghātā rāmaṃ draṣṭuṃ salakṣmaṇam ।
tasyaiva ca kathāṡcitrāḥ kurvāṇā hṛṣṭamānasāḥ ॥
Large numbers of nobility, with joyful hearts,
went forth to see Rāma and Lakshmaṇa, recollecting his deeds. Interestingly, Vālmeeki does not narrate the childhood of Rāma and his brothers at all, in Bāla Kāṇḍa. However, in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa he gives us a glimpse of Rāma’s character, capabilities and the reputation that he had earned, through the words of the people of Ayōdhyā, many a time, as he does in this Ṡlōka.
From a literary perspective, I surmise that it would have been better if Vālmeeki had chosen to narrate a few incidents of Rāma’s childhood, as Vyāsa did, of Krishna’s childhood in Bhāgavatam.
2.83.8 மேகஸ்யாமம் மஹாபாஹும் ஸ்திரஸத்த்வம் த்ருடவ்ரதம் ।
கதா த்ரக்ஷ்யாமஹே ராமம் ஜகதஸ்ஸோகநாஸநம் ॥
mēghaṡyāmaṃ mahābāhuṃ sthirasattvaṃ dṛḍhavratam ।
kadā drakṣyāmahē rāmaṃ jagataṡṡōkanāṡanam ॥
When shall we see that mighty-armed Rāma
of cloud-like dark complexion and unshakable courage,
and who is steadfast in his vows and
is a destroyer of sorrows of this world?
2.83.9 த்ருஷ்ட ஏவ ஹி நஸ்ஸோகமபநேஷ்யதி ராகவ: ।
தமஸ்ஸர்வஸ்ய லோகஸ்ய ஸமுத்யந்நிவ பாஸ்கர: ॥
dṛṣṭa ēva hi naṡṡōkamapanēṣyati rāghavaḥ ।
tamassarvasya lōkasya samudyanniva bhāskaraḥ ॥
The very sight of Rāghava removes all our sufferings,
like the rising sun would, the darkness of the entire world.
2.83.10 இத்யேவம் கதயந்தஸ்தே ஸம்ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டா: கதாஸ்ஸுபா: ।
பரிஷ்வஜாநாஸ்சாந்யோந்யம் யயுர்நாகரிகா ஜநா: ॥
ityēvaṃ kathayantastē samprahṛṣṭāḥ kathāṡṡubhāḥ ।
pariṣvajānāṡcānyōnyaṃ yayurnāgarikā janāḥ ॥
Hugging each other and sharing such pleasant thoughts
the citizens went along in a festive mood.
2.83.11 யே ச தத்ராபரே ஸர்வே ஸம்மதா யே ச நைகமா: ।
ராமம் ப்ரதி யயுர்ஹ்ருஷ்டா ஸ்ஸர்வா: ப்ரக்ருதயஸ்ததா ॥
yē ca tatrāparē sarvē sammatā yē ca naigamāḥ ।
rāmaṃ prati yayurhṛṣṭā ssarvāḥ prakṛtayastathā ॥
All others who enjoyed the esteem (of the royal family)
and merchants and members of guilds
and all the subjects, then journeyed forth
with gladdened hearts, to see Rāma.
2.83.12-15 மணிகாராஸ்ச யே கேசித்கும்பகாராஸ்ச ஸோபநா: ।
ஸூத்ரகர்மக்ருதஸ்சைவ யே ச ஸஸ்த்ரோபஜீவிந: ।
மயூரகா: க்ராகசிகா ரோசகா வேதகாஸ்ததா ।
தந்தகாரா ஸ்ஸுதாகாரா ஸ்ததா கந்தோபஜீவிந: ।
ஸுவர்ணகாரா: ப்ரக்யாதாஸ்ததா கம்பலதாவகா: ।
ஸ்நாபகோஷ்ணோதகா வைத்யாதூபகாஸ்ஸௌண்டிகாஸ்ததா ।
ரஜகாஸ்துந்நவாயாஸ்ச க்ராமகோஷமஹத்தரா: ।
ஸைலூஷாஸ்ச ஸஹ ஸ்த்ரீபிர்யயு: கைவர்தகாஸ்ததா ॥
maṇikārāṡca yē kēcitkumbhakārāṡca ṡōbhanāḥ ।
sūtrakarmakṛtaṡcaiva yē ca ṡastrōpajīvinaḥ ।
mayūrakāḥ krākacikā rōcakā vēdhakāstathā ।
dantakārā ssudhākārā stathā gandhōpajīvinaḥ ।
suvarṇakārāḥ prakhyātāstathā kambaladhāvakāḥ ।
snāpakōṣṇōdakā vaidyādhūpakāṡṡauṇḍikāstathā ।
rajakāstunnavāyāṡca grāmaghōṣamahattarāḥ ।
ṡailūṣāṡca saha strībhiryayuḥ kaivartakāstathā ॥
Also joining them were gem-cutters, skilled potters,
tailors, armament-makers, artificers in peacock plumes,
sawyers, polishers, perforators, workers in ivory and stucco,
perfumers, goldsmiths of renown, blanket cleaners,
bath-attendants and masseurs, physicians, fishermen,
incense-burners, brewers, launderers, weavers,
chieftains of villages and herdsmen colonies,
and actors with their women troupes. Vālmeeki takes the opportunity to give us a list of common trades and vocations of the day.
2.83.16 ஸமாஹிதா வேதவிதோ ப்ராஹ்மணா வ்ருத்தஸம்மதா: ।
கோரதைர்பரதம் யாந்தமநுஜக்மு ஸ்ஸஹஸ்ரஸ: ॥
samāhitā vēdavidō brāhmaṇā vṛttasammatāḥ ।
gōrathairbharataṃ yāntamanujagmu ssahasraṡaḥ ॥
Thousands of imperturbable Brāhmaṇas
who were well versed in Vēdas and
held in high esteem for their conduct
followed Bharata on the journey in ox-drawn chariots.
2.83.17 ஸுவேஷாஸ்ஸுத்தவஸநாஸ்தாம்ரம்ருஷ்டாநுலேபநா: ।
ஸர்வே தே விவிதைர்யாநைஸ்ஸநைர்பரதமந்வயு: ॥
suvēṣāṡṡuddhavasanāstāmramṛṣṭānulēpanāḥ ।
sarvē tē vividhairyānaiṡṡanairbharatamanvayuḥ ॥
All of them, well-adorned, clad in clean garments,
their bodies anointed with rich red unguents,
followed Bharata in various vehicles at a leisurely pace.
2.83.18 ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டமுதிதா ஸேநா ஸாऽந்வயாத்கைகயீஸுதம் ।
ப்ராதுராநயநே யாந்தம் பரதம் ப்ராத்ருவத்ஸலம் ॥
prahṛṣṭamuditā sēnā sā'nvayātkaikayīsutam ।
bhrāturānayanē yāntaṃ bharataṃ bhrātṛvatsalam ॥
The army, happy and joyous, followed
the son of Kaikēyee who loved his brother,
as he was going forth to fetch him.
2.83.19-20 தே கத்வா தூரமத்வாநம் ரதயாநாஸ்வகுஞ்ஜரை: ।
ஸமாஸேதுஸ்ததோ கங்காம் ஸ்ருங்கிபேரபுரம் ப்ரதி ॥
யத்ர ராமஸகோ வீரோ குஹோ ஜ்ஞாதிகணைர்வ்ருத: ।
நிவஸத்யப்ரமாதேந தேஸம் தம் பரிபாலயந் ॥
tē gatvā dūramadhvānaṃ rathayānāṡvakuñjaraiḥ ।
samāsēdustatō gaṅgāṃ ṡṛṅgibērapuraṃ prati ॥
yatra rāmasakhō vīrō guhō jñātigaṇairvṛtaḥ ।
nivasatyapramādēna dēṡaṃ taṃ paripālayan ॥
After travelling a considerable distance
on chariots, carriages, horses and elephants,
they reached river Gaṅgā near Ṡṛṅgibērapura,
in the region where the valiant Guha, Rāma’s friend,
with his kinsmen, ruled, guarding it with all vigilance.
2.83.21 உபேத்ய தீரம் கங்காயாஸ்சக்ரவாகைரலங்க்ருதம் ।
வ்யவாதிஷ்டத ஸா ஸேநா பரதஸ்யாநுயாயிநீ ॥
upētya tīraṃ gaṅgāyāṡcakravākairalaṅkṛtam ।
vyavātiṣṭhata sā sēnā bharatasyānuyāyinī ॥
The army accompanying Bharata reached
the bank of river Gaṅgā that was
adorned with Cakravāka birds, and halted there.
2.83.22 நிரீக்ஷ்யாநுகதாம் ஸேநாம் தாம் ச கங்காம் ஸிவோதகாம் ।
பரதஸ்ஸசிவாந்ஸர்வாநப்ரவீத்வாக்யகோவித: ॥
nirīkṣyānugatāṃ sēnāṃ tāṃ ca gaṅgāṃ ṡivōdakām ।
bharatassacivānsarvānabravīdvākyakōvidaḥ ॥
Seeing the army that followed him
and Gaṅgā with her sanctifying waters,
Bharata, who speaks well, said to all of his officials:
2.83.23 நிவேஸயத மே ஸைந்யமபிப்ராயேண ஸர்வத: ।
விஸ்ராந்தா: ப்ரதரிஷ்யாமஸ்ஸ்வ இதாநீமிமாம் நதீம் ॥
nivēṡayata mē sainyamabhiprāyēṇa sarvataḥ ।
viṡrāntāḥ pratariṣyāmaṡṡva idānīmimāṃ nadīm ॥
Let the army camp here, wherever they like.
We shall take rest and cross the river tomorrow.
2.83.24 தாதும் ச தாவதிச்சாமி ஸ்வர்கதஸ்ய மஹீபதே: ।
ஔர்த்வதேஹநிமித்தார்தமவதீர்யோதகம் நதீம் ॥
dātuṃ ca tāvadicchāmi svargatasya mahīpatēḥ ।
aurdhvadēhanimittārthamavatīryōdakaṃ nadīm ॥
In the meanwhile, I wish to get into the river
and offer libations of water for the benefit,
in the after-life, of the King, who has gone to heaven.
2.83.25 தஸ்யைவம் ப்ருவதோऽமாத்யாஸ்ததேத்யுக்த்வா ஸமாஹிதா: ।
ந்யவேஸயம்ஸ்தாம் சந்தேந ஸ்வேந ஸ்வேந ப்ருதக்ப்ருதக் ॥
tasyaivaṃ bruvatō'mātyāstathētyuktvā samāhitāḥ ।
nyavēṡayaṃstāṃ chandēna svēna svēna pṛthakpṛthak ॥
When he said this, his ministers said ‘so shall it be’,
and with all attention, got the army units
to pitch their camps at places of their choice.
2.83.26 நிவேஸ்ய கங்காமநு தாம் மஹாநதீம்
சமூம் விதாநை: பரிபர்ஹஸோபிநீம் ।
உவாஸ ராமஸ்ய ததா மஹாத்மநோ
விசிந்தயாநோ பரதோ நிவர்தநம் ॥
nivēṡya gaṅgāmanu tāṃ mahānadīṃ
camūṃ vidhānaiḥ paribarhaṡōbhinīm ।
uvāsa rāmasya tadā mahātmanō
vicintayānō bharatō nivartanam ॥
Bharata, having got that army that was
looking splendid with the various equipments, encamped,
and having made necessary arrangements for them
on the bank of that mighty river Gaṅgā,
stayed there thinking about bringing Mahātma Rāma back.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே த்ர்யஸீதிதமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē tryaṡītitamassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the eighty third Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.

perfumers, goldsmiths of renown, blanket cleaners,
bath-attendants and masseurs, physicians, fishermen,
incense-burners, brewers, launderers, weavers,
chieftains of villages and herdsmen colonies,
and actors with their women troupes. Vālmeeki takes the opportunity to give us a list of common trades and vocations of the day.
2.83.16 ஸமாஹிதா வேதவிதோ ப்ராஹ்மணா வ்ருத்தஸம்மதா: ।
கோரதைர்பரதம் யாந்தமநுஜக்மு ஸ்ஸஹஸ்ரஸ: ॥
samāhitā vēdavidō brāhmaṇā vṛttasammatāḥ ।
gōrathairbharataṃ yāntamanujagmu ssahasraṡaḥ ॥
Thousands of imperturbable Brāhmaṇas
who were well versed in Vēdas and
held in high esteem for their conduct
followed Bharata on the journey in ox-drawn chariots.
2.83.17 ஸுவேஷாஸ்ஸுத்தவஸநாஸ்தாம்ரம்ருஷ்டாநுலேபநா: ।
ஸர்வே தே விவிதைர்யாநைஸ்ஸநைர்பரதமந்வயு: ॥
suvēṣāṡṡuddhavasanāstāmramṛṣṭānulēpanāḥ ।
sarvē tē vividhairyānaiṡṡanairbharatamanvayuḥ ॥
All of them, well-adorned, clad in clean garments,
their bodies anointed with rich red unguents,
followed Bharata in various vehicles at a leisurely pace.
2.83.18 ப்ரஹ்ருஷ்டமுதிதா ஸேநா ஸாऽந்வயாத்கைகயீஸுதம் ।
ப்ராதுராநயநே யாந்தம் பரதம் ப்ராத்ருவத்ஸலம் ॥
prahṛṣṭamuditā sēnā sā'nvayātkaikayīsutam ।
bhrāturānayanē yāntaṃ bharataṃ bhrātṛvatsalam ॥
The army, happy and joyous, followed
the son of Kaikēyee who loved his brother,
as he was going forth to fetch him.
2.83.19-20 தே கத்வா தூரமத்வாநம் ரதயாநாஸ்வகுஞ்ஜரை: ।
ஸமாஸேதுஸ்ததோ கங்காம் ஸ்ருங்கிபேரபுரம் ப்ரதி ॥
யத்ர ராமஸகோ வீரோ குஹோ ஜ்ஞாதிகணைர்வ்ருத: ।
நிவஸத்யப்ரமாதேந தேஸம் தம் பரிபாலயந் ॥
tē gatvā dūramadhvānaṃ rathayānāṡvakuñjaraiḥ ।
samāsēdustatō gaṅgāṃ ṡṛṅgibērapuraṃ prati ॥
yatra rāmasakhō vīrō guhō jñātigaṇairvṛtaḥ ।
nivasatyapramādēna dēṡaṃ taṃ paripālayan ॥
After travelling a considerable distance
on chariots, carriages, horses and elephants,
they reached river Gaṅgā near Ṡṛṅgibērapura,
in the region where the valiant Guha, Rāma’s friend,
with his kinsmen, ruled, guarding it with all vigilance.
2.83.21 உபேத்ய தீரம் கங்காயாஸ்சக்ரவாகைரலங்க்ருதம் ।
வ்யவாதிஷ்டத ஸா ஸேநா பரதஸ்யாநுயாயிநீ ॥
upētya tīraṃ gaṅgāyāṡcakravākairalaṅkṛtam ।
vyavātiṣṭhata sā sēnā bharatasyānuyāyinī ॥
The army accompanying Bharata reached
the bank of river Gaṅgā that was
adorned with Cakravāka birds, and halted there.
2.83.22 நிரீக்ஷ்யாநுகதாம் ஸேநாம் தாம் ச கங்காம் ஸிவோதகாம் ।
பரதஸ்ஸசிவாந்ஸர்வாநப்ரவீத்வாக்யகோவித: ॥
nirīkṣyānugatāṃ sēnāṃ tāṃ ca gaṅgāṃ ṡivōdakām ।
bharatassacivānsarvānabravīdvākyakōvidaḥ ॥
Seeing the army that followed him
and Gaṅgā with her sanctifying waters,
Bharata, who speaks well, said to all of his officials:
2.83.23 நிவேஸயத மே ஸைந்யமபிப்ராயேண ஸர்வத: ।
விஸ்ராந்தா: ப்ரதரிஷ்யாமஸ்ஸ்வ இதாநீமிமாம் நதீம் ॥
nivēṡayata mē sainyamabhiprāyēṇa sarvataḥ ।
viṡrāntāḥ pratariṣyāmaṡṡva idānīmimāṃ nadīm ॥
Let the army camp here, wherever they like.
We shall take rest and cross the river tomorrow.
2.83.24 தாதும் ச தாவதிச்சாமி ஸ்வர்கதஸ்ய மஹீபதே: ।
ஔர்த்வதேஹநிமித்தார்தமவதீர்யோதகம் நதீம் ॥
dātuṃ ca tāvadicchāmi svargatasya mahīpatēḥ ।
aurdhvadēhanimittārthamavatīryōdakaṃ nadīm ॥
In the meanwhile, I wish to get into the river
and offer libations of water for the benefit,
in the after-life, of the King, who has gone to heaven.
2.83.25 தஸ்யைவம் ப்ருவதோऽமாத்யாஸ்ததேத்யுக்த்வா ஸமாஹிதா: ।
ந்யவேஸயம்ஸ்தாம் சந்தேந ஸ்வேந ஸ்வேந ப்ருதக்ப்ருதக் ॥
tasyaivaṃ bruvatō'mātyāstathētyuktvā samāhitāḥ ।
nyavēṡayaṃstāṃ chandēna svēna svēna pṛthakpṛthak ॥
When he said this, his ministers said ‘so shall it be’,
and with all attention, got the army units
to pitch their camps at places of their choice.
2.83.26 நிவேஸ்ய கங்காமநு தாம் மஹாநதீம்
சமூம் விதாநை: பரிபர்ஹஸோபிநீம் ।
உவாஸ ராமஸ்ய ததா மஹாத்மநோ
விசிந்தயாநோ பரதோ நிவர்தநம் ॥
nivēṡya gaṅgāmanu tāṃ mahānadīṃ
camūṃ vidhānaiḥ paribarhaṡōbhinīm ।
uvāsa rāmasya tadā mahātmanō
vicintayānō bharatō nivartanam ॥
Bharata, having got that army that was
looking splendid with the various equipments, encamped,
and having made necessary arrangements for them
on the bank of that mighty river Gaṅgā,
stayed there thinking about bringing Mahātma Rāma back.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே த்ர்யஸீதிதமஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē tryaṡītitamassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the eighty third Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
