Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 64
In this Sarga, Daṡaratha proceeds to the Āṡrama of the aged parents of the Muni whom he killed accidentally. The blind parents think that it is their son who has come and asks him for the reason for the delay.
Daṡaratha tells him about the horrible mistake he has done. The parents cry and ask him to take them to their son. They cry pitifully, falling on the body of their son and give up their lives on their son’s funeral pyre, after cursing Daṡaratha also to die, crying for his own son.
After narrating to Kousalyā that recollection of killing of the son of Muni, the king laments about what he has done to Rāma, and breathes his last, past midnight.

I took a look at that Muni.
My mind was taken over by fear.
I told him in blurred and unclear words,
with all the consonants dropped from them:

munimavyaktayā vācā tamahaṃ sajjamānayā ।
hīnavyañjanayā prēkṣya bhītacitta ivābruvam ॥
I took a look at that Muni.
My mind was taken over by fear.
I told him in blurred and unclear words,
with all the consonants dropped from them:
manasaḥ karma cēṣṭābhirabhisaṃstabhya vāgbalam ।
ācacakṣē tvahaṃ tasmai putravyasanajaṃ bhayam ॥
Managing my mind, faculties, and
the strength in my voice by an effort of will,
I acquainted him with the frightful
incident that happened to his son.
kṣatriyō'haṃ daṡarathō nāhaṃ putrō mahātmanaḥ ।
sajjanāvamataṃ duḥkhamidaṃ prāptaṃ svakarmajam ॥
I am a Kshatriya. My name is Daṡaratha.
O Mahātma! I am not your son.
This sorrow befell entirely out of my own deeds
that would be condemnable by any sane person.
bhagavaṃṡcāpahastō'haṃ sarayūtīramāgataḥ ।
jighāṃsuṡṡvāpadaṃ kañcinnipānē cā'gataṃ gajam ॥
O Bhagawan! I came to the banks of river Sarayu
with bow in my hands, intending to kill
any beast of prey or elephant
that might come there to drink water.
tataṡṡrutō mayā ṡabdō jalē kumbhasya pūryataḥ ।
dvipō'yamiti matvā'yaṃ bāṇēnābhihatō mayā ॥
Then I heard the sound of a pot being filled with water.
I mistook it to be the sound of an elephant
and shot it with my arrow.
gatvā nadyāstata stīramapaṡyamiṣuṇā hṛdi ।
vinirbhinnaṃ gataprāṇaṃ ṡayānaṃ bhuvi tāpasam ॥
Then I went to the bank of the river
and saw a Muni, his heart ripped by the arrow,
lying all but dead on the ground.
bhagavacchaṡabdamālakṣya mayā gajajighāṃsunā ।
visṛpṭō'mbhasi nārācastēna tē nihatassutaḥ ॥
O Bhagawan! I wanted to aim at the sound
to kill the elephant, and shot the arrow towards the waters.
But your son was killed, instead!
tatastasyaiva vacanādupētya paritapyataḥ ।
sa mayā sahasā bāṇa udhṛtō marmatastadā ॥
I then approached him and
pulled the arrow from his vitals,
as he, suffering severely, requested me to!
sa cōdhṛtēna bāṇēna tatraiva svargamāsthitaḥ ।
bhavantau pitarau ṡōcannandhāviti vilapya ca ॥
He left instantaneously to heaven
when the arrow was pulled out,
grieving and lamenting for you,
his parents, who are blind!
ajñānādbhavataḥ putrassahasā'bhihatō mayā ।
ṡēṣamēvaṃ gatē yatsyāttatprasīdatu mē muniḥ ॥
Your son was killed by me instantaneously, by mistake.
For whatever has happened and
whatever is left to be done henceforth,
may the Muni have pity on me!
sa taccrutvā vacaḥ krūraṃ mayōktamaghaṡaṃsinā ।
nāṡakattīvramāyāsamakartuṃ bhagavānṛṣiḥ ॥
Hearing me speak those wretched and sad words,
that Ṛshi, the Bhagawān, could not help but give in to grief.
sa bāṣpapūrṇavadanō niṡṡvasanṡōkakarṡitaḥ ।
māmuvāca mahātējāḥ kṛtāñjalimupasthitam ॥
That supremely radiant Muni,
with his face filled with tears,
heaving sighs and tormented by grief,
said to me as I stood by with palms joined:
yadyētadaṡubhaṃ karma na tvaṃ mē kathayēssvayam ।
phalēnmūrdhāsma tē rājan sadyaṡṡatasahasradhā ॥
O King! Had you not told me
about this terrible act on your own,
your head would have shattered into
hundreds of thousands of pieces immediately.
kṣatriyēṇa vadhō rājan! vānaprasthē viṡēṣataḥ ।
jñānapūrvaṃ kṛtassthānāccyāvayēdapi vajriṇam ॥
Wanton killing by a Kshatriya,
of a Vana-dwelling anchorite especially,
would topple even the
wielder of the thunderbolt (Indra) from his place.
the wielder of the thunderbolt (Indra)
saptadhā tu phalēnmūrdhā munau tapasi tiṣṭhati ।
jñānādvisṛjataṡṡastraṃ tādṛṡē brahmacāriṇi ॥
Whoever shoots an arrow knowingly on a
Muni, who is sitting in Tapa,
or anyone similarly involved in matters of Brahman,
will find his head split into seven pieces.
ajñānāddhikṛtaṃ yasmādidaṃ tēnaiva jīvasi ।
api hyadya kulaṃ na syādikṣvākūṇāṃ kutō bhavān ॥
You are still alive only because
you have done it out of ignorance.
If not, the entire race of Ikshwākus would
have been wiped out; where would you be then!
naya nau nṛpa! taṃ dēṡamiti māṃ cābhyabhāṣata ।
adya taṃ draṣṭumicchāvaḥ putraṃ paṡcimadarṡanam ॥
rudhirēṇāvasiktāṅgaṃ prakīrṇājinavāsasam ।
ṡayānaṃ bhuvi nissaṃjñaṃ dharma rājavaṡaṃ gatam ॥
Then he said to me:
Lead both of us, O King, to that place.
We would like to have a last look
at him, our son, whose body is covered in blood,
whose deer skin garb is in disarray,
who lies on the ground senseless,
and who has passed into the keeping of Yama!
āthāhamēkastaṃ dēṡaṃ nītvā tau bhṛṡaduḥkhitau ।
asparṡayamahaṃ putraṃ taṃ muniṃ saha bhāryayā ॥
Then, all by myself, I took both of them
including his wife, who were overwhelmed by grief,
to that place and made them touch their son.
tau putramātmanasspṛṣṭvā tamāsādya tapasvinau ।
nipētatuṡṡarīrē'sya pitā cāsyēdamabravīt ॥
Then those two Tapasvis approached
their son, touched him and fell on his body.
Then the father said these words:
nābhivādayasē mādya na ca mā'mabhibhāṣasē ।
kiṃ nu ṡēṣē tu bhūmau tvaṃ vatsa! kiṃ kupitō hyasi ॥
My dear! You do not greet me today!
You are not speaking lovingly! Are you angry with us?
Why are you sleeping here on the ground?
na tvahaṃ tē priyaṃ putra! mātaraṃ paṡya dhārmika ।
kiṃ nu nāliṅgasē putra sukumāra vacō vada ॥
My son, do you not like me?
Then, look at your mother, O Dhārmika!
Why won’t you give me a hug!
O gentle one, say something!
kasya vā'pararātrē'haṃ ṡrōṣyāmi hṛdayaṅgamam ।
adhīyānasya madhuraṃ ṡāstraṃ vānyadviṡēṣataḥ ॥
Whose sweet and lovely voice will I hear in the early hours,
reciting Ṡastras and other exquisite texts?
kō māṃ sandyāmupāsyaiva snātvā hutahutāṡanaḥ ।
ṡlāghayiṣyatyupāsīnaḥ putra ṡōkabhayārditam ॥
Who would speak to me as I
take bath, pay salutations to Sandhya,
complete fire rituals and sit
nervously, distressed by grief?
kandamūlaphalaṃ hṛtvā kō māṃ priyamivātithim ।
bhōjayiṣyatyakarmaṇyamapragrahamanāyakam ॥
Who will gather roots and fruits and feed me,
the one who cannot work,
who cannot earn and who has no guide,
like the most welcome guest?
imāmandhāṃ ca vṛddhāṃ ca mātaraṃ tē tapasvinīm ।
kathaṃ vatsa! bhariṣyāmi kṛpaṇāṃ putragardhinīm ॥
My dear! How can I offer succor to your blind and aged mother,
the pitiful Tapasvini, who yearns for her son?
tiṣṭha mā mā gamaḥ putra! yamasya sadanaṃ prati ।
ṡvō mayā saha gantāsi jananyā ca samēdhitaḥ ॥
My son! Hold on! Do not, please do not
leave for the abode of Yama!
You could go tomorrow, along with me and your mother!
ubhāvapi ca ṡōkārtāvanāthau kṛpaṇau vanē ।
kṣipramēva gamiṣyāvastvayā hīnau yamakṣayam ॥
Both of us also, tormented by grief,
and pitiful in this Vana without you,
shall go very soon to the abode of Yama!
tatō vaivasvataṃ dṛṣṭvā taṃ pravakṣyāmi bhāratīm ।
kṣamatāṃ dharmarājō mē bibhṛyātpitarāvayam ॥
When I see Yama, the Dharmarāja, the son of Vaivaswan,
I will plead: “May I be condoned!
May he be allowed to support his parents!”
dātumarhati dharmātmā lōkapālō mahāyaṡāḥ ।
īdṛṡasya mamākṣayyā mēkāmabhayadakṣiṇām ॥
It befits the highly renowned Dharmātma,
the lord of the worlds, to grant me
this one comforting boon, that means everything to me.
