Ayodhya Kaanda - Sarga 58
In this Sarga, Daṡaratha asks Sumantra how Rāma, Lakshmaṇa and Seetā were living in the Vana and what they conveyed to him. Sumantra conveys the messages from all three.
2.58.1 ப்ரத்யாஸ்வஸ்தோ யதா ராஜா மோஹாத்ப்ரத்யாகதம் புந: ।
அதாऽஜுஹாவ தம் ஸூதம் ராமவ்ருத்தாந்தகாரணாத் ॥
pratyāṡvastō yadā rājā mōhātpratyāgataṃ punaḥ ।
athā'juhāva taṃ sūtaṃ rāmavṛttāntakāraṇāt ॥
The King, after recovering from his swoon
and feeling a little better,
sent for the charioteer,
wishing to hear news of Rāma.
2.58.2-3 அத ஸூதோ மஹாராஜம் க்ருதாஞ்ஜலிருபஸ்தித: ।
ராமமேவாநுஸோசந்தம் து:கஸோகஸமந்விதம் ॥
வ்ருத்தம் பரமஸந்தப்தம் நவக்ரஹமிவ த்விபம் ।
விநிஸ்வஸந்தம் த்யாயந்தமஸ்வஸ்த மிவ குஙஞரம் ॥
atha sūtō mahārājaṃ kṛtāñjalirupasthitaḥ ।
rāmamēvānuṡōcantaṃ duḥkhaṡōkasamanvitam ॥
vṛddhaṃ paramasantaptaṃ navagrahamiva dvipam ।
viniṡvasantaṃ dhyāyantamasvastha miva kuṅañaram ॥
And the charioteer with folded hands
waited upon that aged supreme King, who was
heaving great sighs thinking of nothing but Rāma,
brooding like a tusker that is ill,
overwhelmed by sadness and grief
and distraught like a newly trapped elephant.
2.58.4 ராஜா து ரஜஸா ஸூதம் த்வஸ்தாங்கம் ஸமுபஸ்திதம் ।
அஸ்ருபூர்ணமுகம் தீநமுவாச பரமார்தவத் ॥
rājā tu rajasā sūtaṃ dhvastāṅgaṃ samupasthitam ।
aṡrupūrṇamukhaṃ dīnamuvāca paramārtavat ॥
The king, in all anxiety,
asked the charioteer who stood nearby
with his body covered in dust
and face filled with tears,
and looking helpless and despondent:
2.58.5 க்வநு வத்ஸ்யதி தர்மாத்மா வ்ருக்ஷமூலமுபாஸ்ரித: ।
ஸோऽத்யந்தஸுகிதஸ்ஸூத! கிமஸிஷ்யதி ராகவ: ॥
kvanu vatsyati dharmātmā vṛkṣamūlamupāṡritaḥ ।
sō'tyantasukhitassūta! kimaṡiṣyati rāghavaḥ ॥
O charioteer, where is the Dharmātma (Rāma) living?
At the foot of which tree did he make his abode?
What could Rāghava, who was used
to the best of comforts, eat?
2.58.6 து:கஸ்யாநுசிதோ து:கம் ஸுமந்த்ர ஸயநோசித: ।
பூமிபாலாத்மஜோ பூமௌ ஸேதே கதமநாதவத் ॥
duḥkhasyānucitō duḥkhaṃ sumantra ṡayanōcitaḥ ।
bhūmipālātmajō bhūmau ṡētē kathamanāthavat ॥
How can the son of the ruler of the earth,
who knows no hardships, face the hardship?
How could he, who is used to sleeping on a bed,
lie on the bare ground like a forlorn creature?
2.58.7 யம் யாந்தமநுயாந்தி ஸ்ம பதாதிரதகுஞ்ஜரா: ।
ஸ வத்ஸ்யதி கதம் ராமோ விஜநம் வந மாஸ்ரித: ॥
yaṃ yāntamanuyānti sma padātirathakuñjarāḥ ।
sa vatsyati kathaṃ rāmō vijanaṃ vana māṡritaḥ ॥
How could Rāma, who is followed always by
infantry, chariotry and elephantry, wherever he goes,
live in a Vana that has no humans around?
2.58.8 வ்யாலைர்ம்ருகைராசரிதம் க்ருஷ்ணஸர்பநிஷேவிதம் ।
கதம் குமாரௌ வைதேஹ்யா ஸார்தம் வந முபஸ்திதௌ ॥
vyālairmṛgairācaritaṃ kṛṣṇasarpaniṣēvitam ।
kathaṃ kumārau vaidēhyā sārdhaṃ vana mupasthitau ॥
How could the two princes and the princess of Vidēha
live in the Vana that is infested by black serpents
and in which savage beasts roam?
2.58.9 ஸுகுமார்யா தபஸ்விந்யா ஸுமந்த்ர! ஸஹ ஸீதயா ।
ராஜபுத்ரௌ கதம் பாதை ரவருஹ்ய ரதாத்கதௌ ॥
sukumāryā tapasvinyā sumantra! saha sītayā ।
rājaputrau kathaṃ pādai ravaruhya rathādgatau ॥
How could the sons of a royal family
along with the delicate and pitiable Seetā
go on foot, getting off the chariot?
2.58.10 ஸித்தார்த: கலு ஸூத! த்வம் யேந த்ருஷ்டௌ மமாऽத்மஜௌ ।
வநாந்தம் ப்ரவிஸந்தௌ தாவஸ்விநாவிவமந்தரம் ॥
siddhārthaḥ khalu sūta! tvaṃ yēna dṛṣṭau mamā'tmajau ।
vanāntaṃ praviṡantau tāvaṡvināvivamandaram ॥
You are indeed blessed, O charioteer, to have
had the fortune of seeing my sons enter the Vana,
like Aṡwini Dēvatas entering Mount Mandara!
2.58.11 கிமுவாச வசோ ராம: கிமுவாச ச லக்ஷ்மண: ।
ஸுமந்த்ர! வநமாஸாத்ய கிமுவாச ச மைதிலீ ॥
kimuvāca vacō rāmaḥ kimuvāca ca lakṣmaṇaḥ ।
sumantra! vanamāsādya kimuvāca ca maithilī ॥
On reaching the Vana, O Sumantra,
what did Rāma say, what did Lakshmaṇa say
and what did the princess of Mithilā say?
2.58.12 ஆஸிதம் ஸயிதம் புக்தம் ஸூத! ராமஸ்ய கீர்தய ।
ஜீவிஷ்யாமஹமேதேந யயாதிரிவ ஸாதுஷு ॥
āsitaṃ ṡayitaṃ bhuktaṃ sūta! rāmasya kīrtaya ।
jīviṣyāmahamētēna yayātiriva sādhuṣu ॥
Tell me, O charioteer, how Rāma sat, slept and ate.
I shall also, doing the same way,
live just as Yayāti did in the company of Sādhus. The story of Yayāti is alluded to in Rāmāyaṇa a few times. The full story of Yayāti is available in Ādi Parva of Mahābhārata. Yayāti indulges in sensual pleasures on borrowed youth and then gets disgusted about it. Then he performs intense Tapa and attains heaven.
There, Yayāti boasts with Indra, that he was the greatest among the Tapasvis. As a consequence he falls down from heaven. Indra grants him a boon to fall among Sādhus. There they bequeath their entire Puṇya and thus Yayāti regains Heaven. Similarly, Daṡaratha hopes to change his life style to match that of Rāma.
2.58.13 இதி ஸூதோ நரேந்த்ரேண போதிதஸ்ஸஜ்ஜமாநயா ।
உவாச வாசா ராஜாநம் ஸ பாஷ்பபரிபத்தயா ॥
iti sūtō narēndrēṇa bōdhitassajjamānayā ।
uvāca vācā rājānaṃ sa bāṣpaparibaddhayā ॥
Thus asked by the lord of peoples,
the charioteer replied in a faltering voice,
choked by tears, to that king:
2.58.14 அப்ரவீந்மாம் மஹாராஜ! தர்மமேவாநுபாலயந் ।
அஞ்ஜலிம் ராகவ: க்ருத்வா ஸிரஸாऽபிப்ரணம்ய ச ॥
abravīnmāṃ mahārāja! dharmamēvānupālayan ।
añjaliṃ rāghavaḥ kṛtvā ṡirasā'bhipraṇamya ca ॥
O supreme king! Rāghava said to me,
in complete adherence to Dharma,
with palms joined in reverence
and bowing his head in salutations to you:
2.58.15 ஸூத! மத்வசநாத்தஸ்ய தாதஸ்ய விதிதாத்மந: ।
ஸிரஸா வந்தநீயஸ்ய வந்த்யௌ பாதௌ மஹாத்மந: ॥
sūta! madvacanāttasya tātasya viditātmanaḥ ।
ṡirasā vandanīyasya vandyau pādau mahātmanaḥ ॥
O Charioteer! I would like to say that
the feet of my sagacious father, the Mahātma,
which deserve to be touched by my head
are receiving my salutations!
2.58.16 ஸர்வமந்த:புரம் வாச்யம் ஸூத! மத்வசநாத்த்வயா ।
ஆரோக்யமவிஸேஷேண யதார்ஹம் சாபிவாதநம் ॥
sarvamantaḥpuraṃ vācyaṃ sūta! madvacanāttvayā ।
ārōgyamaviṡēṣēṇa yathārhaṃ cābhivādanam ॥
Please convey salutations, on my behalf,
to everyone in the inner quarters,
without exception and any distinction,
in an appropriate manner,
and my enquiries about their health and wellbeing!
2.58.17 மாதா ச மம கௌஸல்யா குஸலம் சாபிவாதநம் ।
அப்ரமாதம் ச வக்தவ்யா ப்ரூயாஸ்சைநாமிதம் வச: ॥
mātā ca mama kausalyā kuṡalaṃ cābhivādanam ।
apramādaṃ ca vaktavyā brūyāṡcaināmidaṃ vacaḥ ॥
Tell my mother Kousalyā that we are doing well
and that we offer our obeisance.
Tell her that she should be alert.
Please also add:
2.58.18 தர்மநித்யா யதாகாலமக்ந்யகாரபரா பவ ।
தேவி! தேவஸ்ய பாதௌ ச தேவவத்பரிபாலய ॥
dharmanityā yathākālamagnyagāraparā bhava ।
dēvi! dēvasya pādau ca dēvavatparipālaya ॥
O queen! Constantly adhering to Dharma,
you may zealously see that all
fire rituals are performed in a timely manner.
And you may devote yourself to the
feet of the king, as if he is your god!
2.58.19 அபிமாநம் ச மாநம் ச த்யக்த்வா வர்தஸ்ய மாத்ருஷு ।
அநு ராஜாநமார்யாம் ச கைகேயீமம்ப காரய ॥
abhimānaṃ ca mānaṃ ca tyaktvā vartasya mātṛṣu ।
anu rājānamāryāṃ ca kaikēyīmamba kāraya ॥
Please regard all mothers without
any pretense of pride and haughtiness!
Please see that revered Kaikēyee would
oblige and be in good terms with the king.
2.58.20 குமாரே பரதே வ்ருத்திர்வர்திதவ்யா ச ராஜவத் ।
அர்தஜ்யேஷ்டா ஹி ராஜாநோ ராஜதர்மமநுஸ்மர ॥
kumārē bharatē vṛttirvartitavyā ca rājavat ।
arthajyēṣṭhā hi rājānō rājadharmamanusmara ॥
Regarding prince Bharata,
you shall treat him as if he were the king.
Keep in mind the royal customs and that
kings have the first claim on the treasury.
2.58.21 பரத: குஸலம் வாச்யோ வாச்யோ மத்வசநேந ச ।
ஸர்வாஸ்வேவ யதாந்யாயம் வ்ருத்திம் வர்தஸ்வ மாத்ருஷு ॥
bharataḥ kuṡalaṃ vācyō vācyō madvacanēna ca ।
sarvāsvēva yathānyāyaṃ vṛttiṃ vartasva mātṛṣu ॥
On my behalf, please ask about the wellbeing of Bharata
and tell him that it behooves on him to
treat all the mothers in an appropriate manner.
2.58.22 வக்தவ்யஸ்ச மஹாபாஹுரிக்ஷ்வாகுகுலநந்தந: ।
பிதரம் யௌவராஜ்யஸ்தோ ராஜ்யஸ்தமநுபாலய ॥
vaktavyaṡca mahābāhurikṣvākukulanandanaḥ ।
pitaraṃ yauvarājyasthō rājyasthamanupālaya ॥
Be sure to tell him, of the mighty arm,
the delight of the Ikshwākus,
that he shall hold the office of crown prince
in accordance with the wishes of father, who is still the King.
2.58.23 அதிக்ராந்தவயா ராஜா மாஸ்மைநம் வ்யவரோருத: ।
குமார ராஜ்யே ஜீவ த்வம் தஸ்யைவாஜ்ஞாப்ரவர்தநாத் ॥
atikrāntavayā rājā māsmainaṃ vyavarōrudhaḥ ।
kumāra rājyē jīva tvaṃ tasyaivājñāpravartanāt ॥
The king is advanced in age.
May you not restrain him in any manner.
May his wish and commands be carried out
by you from the office of crown prince.
2.58.24 அப்ரவீச்சாபி மாம் பூயோ ப்ருஸமஸ்ரூணி வர்தயந் ।
மாதேவ மம மாதா தே த்ரஷ்டவ்யா புத்ரகர்திநீ ॥
abravīccāpi māṃ bhūyō bhṛṡamaṡrūṇi vartayan ।
mātēva mama mātā tē draṣṭavyā putragardhinī ॥
And he said, repeatedly, shedding a flood of tears,
“Please look upon my mother,
who covets her son, as your own mother”.
2.58.25 இத்யேவம் மாம் மஹராஜ! ப்ருவந்நேவ மஹாயஸா: ।
ராமோ ராஜீவதாம்ராக்ஷோ ப்ருஸமஸ்ரூண்யவர்தயத் ॥
ityēvaṃ māṃ maharāja! bruvannēva mahāyaṡāḥ ।
rāmō rājīvatāmrākṣō bhṛṡamaṡrūṇyavartayat ॥
Saying this to me, O supreme King,
the lotus eyed Rāma of great repute
shed a flood of tears.
2.58.26 லக்ஷ்மணஸ்து ஸுஸங்க்ருத்தோ நிஸ்ஸ்வஸந்வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ।
கேநாயமபராதேந ராஜபுத்ரோ விவாஸித: ॥
lakṣmaṇastu susaṅkṛddhō niṡṡvasanvākyamabravīt ।
kēnāyamaparādhēna rājaputrō vivāsitaḥ ॥
But Lakshmaṇa, full of anger,
heaving violent sighs, said these words:
“What was the offence, for which
the son of the king had to be exiled ? These Ṡlōkas succinctly represents the legitimate reaction, not only of Lakshmaṇa, but also of everyone in Ayōdhyā.
2.58.27 ராஜ்ஞா து கலு கைகேய்யா லகுத்வாஸ்ரித்ய ஸாஸநம் ।
க்ருதம் கார்யமகார்யம் வா வயம் யேநாபிபீடிதா: ॥
rājñā tu khalu kaikēyyā laghutvāṡritya ṡāsanam ।
kṛtaṃ kāryamakāryaṃ vā vayaṃ yēnābhipīḍitāḥ ॥
Whatever the king did, appropriate or not,
obeying Kaikēyee’s petty dictates,
has brought us this hardship.
2.58.28 யதி ப்ரவ்ராஜிதோ ராமோ லோபகாரணகாரிதம் ।
வரதாநநிமித்தம் வா ஸர்வதா துஷ்க்ருதம் க்ருதம் ॥
yadi pravrājitō rāmō lōbhakāraṇakāritam ।
varadānanimittaṃ vā sarvathā duṣkṛtaṃ kṛtam ॥
Whether it is for the reason of
honoring a boon that was given,
or for some other selfish reason,
sending Rāma in exile is a
reprehensible act, in any sense.
2.58.29 இதம் தாவத்யதாகாமமீஸ்வரஸ்ய க்ருதே க்ருதம் ।
ராமஸ்ய து பரித்யாகே ந ஹேது முபலக்ஷயே ॥
idaṃ tāvadyathākāmamīṡvarasya kṛtē kṛtam ।
rāmasya tu parityāgē na hētu mupalakṣayē ॥
I do not see any reason for Rāma to be abandoned
except that it has been done as per the whims and fancies
of the people at the helm.
2.58.30 அஸமீக்ஷய ஸமாரப்தம் விருத்தம் புத்திலாகவாத் ।
ஜநயிஷ்யதி ஸங்க்ரோஸம் ராகவஸ்ய விவாஸநம் ॥
asamīkṣaya samārabdhaṃ viruddhaṃ budhdilāghavāt ।
janayiṣyati saṅkrōṡaṃ rāghavasya vivāsanam ॥
The exiling of Rāma, which has been done
in a flippant manner without proper thought,
negating everything that is plausible,
can generate nothing but sorrow.
2.58.31 அஹம் தாவந்மஹாராஜே பித்ருத்வம் நோபலக்ஷ்யே ।
ப்ராதா பர்தா ச பந்துஸ்ச பிதா ச மம ராகவ: ॥
ahaṃ tāvanmahārājē pitṛtvaṃ nōpalakṣyē ।
bhrātā bhartā ca bandhuṡca pitā ca mama rāghavaḥ ॥
Hence, I cannot see a father in that supreme king.
Rāghava alone is my brother, master, relative and father.
2.58.32 ஸர்வர்லோகப்ரியம் த்யக்த்வா ஸர்வலோகஹிதே ரதம் ।
ஸர்வலோகோऽநுரஜ்யேத கதம் த்வாऽநேநகர்மணா ॥
sarvarlōkapriyaṃ tyaktvā sarvalōkahitē ratam ।
sarvalōkō'nurajyēta kathaṃ tvā'nēnakarmaṇā ॥
How can you hope to be liked by this world,
by doing such an act, of abandoning someone
who is the darling of all worlds
and who is devoted to the good of all?
2.58.33 ஸர்வப்ரஜாபிராமம் ஹி ராமம் ப்ரவ்ராஜ்ய தார்மிகம் ।
ஸர்வலோகம் விருத்யேமம் கதம் ராஜா பவிஷ்யஸி ॥
sarvaprajābhirāmaṃ hi rāmaṃ pravrājya dhārmikam ।
sarvalōkaṃ virudhyēmaṃ kathaṃ rājā bhaviṣyasi ॥
How can you continue as a king,
having antagonized the entire world by sending
Rāma, the Dhārmika, the darling of all worlds, into exile?
2.58.34 ஜாநகீ து மஹாராஜ! நிஸ்ஸ்வஸந்தீ மநஸ்விநீ ।
பூதோபஹதசித்தேவ விஷ்டிதா விஸ்ம்ருதா ஸ்மிதா ॥
jānakī tu mahārāja! niṡṡvasantī manasvinī ।
bhūtōpahatacittēva viṣṭhitā vismṛtā smitā ॥
As for the sensitive daughter of Janaka,
O supreme king, she stood oblivious,
like one possessed, heaving great sighs.
2.58.35 அத்ருஷ்டபூர்வவ்யஸநா ராஜ்யபுத்ரீ யஸஸ்விநீ ।
தேந து:கேந ருததீ நைவ மாம் கிஞ்சிதப்ரவீத் ॥
adṛṣṭapūrvavyasanā rājyaputrī yaṡasvinī ।
tēna duḥkhēna rudatī naiva māṃ kiñcidabravīt ॥
Having never experienced such a hardship,
that well regarded daughter of a king
wept in sadness; and did not say a word to me.
2.58.36 உத்வீக்ஷமாணா பர்தாரம் முகேந பரிஸுஷ்யதா ।
முமோச ஸஹஸா பாஷ்பம் மாம் ப்ரயாந்தமுதீக்ஷ்ய ஸா ॥
udvīkṣamāṇā bhartāraṃ mukhēna pariṡuṣyatā ।
mumōca sahasā bāṣpaṃ māṃ prayāntamudīkṣya sā ॥
She looked up at her master,
her face parched by grief.
Tears rolled off her face as she
followed me with her eyes when I departed.
2.58.37 ததைவ ராமோऽஸ்ருமுக: க்ருதாஞ்ஜலி:
ஸ்திதோऽபவல்லக்ஷ்மணபாஹுபாலித: ।
ததைவ ஸீதா ருததீ தபஸ்விநீ
நிரீக்ஷதே ராஜரதம் ததைவ மாம் ॥
tathaiva rāmō'ṡrumukhaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ
sthitō'bhavallakṣmaṇabāhupālitaḥ ।
tathaiva sītā rudatī tapasvinī
nirīkṣatē rājarathaṃ tathaiva mām ॥
Rāma, his face full of tears, stood there with joined palms,
waited upon by the solicitous Lakshmaṇa.
Similarly, the sensitive Seetā, weeping,
transfixed her eyes on the royal chariot and me.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே அஷ்டபஞ்சாஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē aṣṭapañcāṡassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the fifty eighth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.

duḥkhasyānucitō duḥkhaṃ sumantra ṡayanōcitaḥ ।
bhūmipālātmajō bhūmau ṡētē kathamanāthavat ॥
How can the son of the ruler of the earth,
who knows no hardships, face the hardship?
How could he, who is used to sleeping on a bed,
lie on the bare ground like a forlorn creature?
2.58.7 யம் யாந்தமநுயாந்தி ஸ்ம பதாதிரதகுஞ்ஜரா: ।
ஸ வத்ஸ்யதி கதம் ராமோ விஜநம் வந மாஸ்ரித: ॥
yaṃ yāntamanuyānti sma padātirathakuñjarāḥ ।
sa vatsyati kathaṃ rāmō vijanaṃ vana māṡritaḥ ॥
How could Rāma, who is followed always by
infantry, chariotry and elephantry, wherever he goes,
live in a Vana that has no humans around?
2.58.8 வ்யாலைர்ம்ருகைராசரிதம் க்ருஷ்ணஸர்பநிஷேவிதம் ।
கதம் குமாரௌ வைதேஹ்யா ஸார்தம் வந முபஸ்திதௌ ॥
vyālairmṛgairācaritaṃ kṛṣṇasarpaniṣēvitam ।
kathaṃ kumārau vaidēhyā sārdhaṃ vana mupasthitau ॥
How could the two princes and the princess of Vidēha
live in the Vana that is infested by black serpents
and in which savage beasts roam?
2.58.9 ஸுகுமார்யா தபஸ்விந்யா ஸுமந்த்ர! ஸஹ ஸீதயா ।
ராஜபுத்ரௌ கதம் பாதை ரவருஹ்ய ரதாத்கதௌ ॥
sukumāryā tapasvinyā sumantra! saha sītayā ।
rājaputrau kathaṃ pādai ravaruhya rathādgatau ॥
How could the sons of a royal family
along with the delicate and pitiable Seetā
go on foot, getting off the chariot?
2.58.10 ஸித்தார்த: கலு ஸூத! த்வம் யேந த்ருஷ்டௌ மமாऽத்மஜௌ ।
வநாந்தம் ப்ரவிஸந்தௌ தாவஸ்விநாவிவமந்தரம் ॥
siddhārthaḥ khalu sūta! tvaṃ yēna dṛṣṭau mamā'tmajau ।
vanāntaṃ praviṡantau tāvaṡvināvivamandaram ॥
You are indeed blessed, O charioteer, to have
had the fortune of seeing my sons enter the Vana,
like Aṡwini Dēvatas entering Mount Mandara!
2.58.11 கிமுவாச வசோ ராம: கிமுவாச ச லக்ஷ்மண: ।
ஸுமந்த்ர! வநமாஸாத்ய கிமுவாச ச மைதிலீ ॥
kimuvāca vacō rāmaḥ kimuvāca ca lakṣmaṇaḥ ।
sumantra! vanamāsādya kimuvāca ca maithilī ॥
On reaching the Vana, O Sumantra,
what did Rāma say, what did Lakshmaṇa say
and what did the princess of Mithilā say?
2.58.12 ஆஸிதம் ஸயிதம் புக்தம் ஸூத! ராமஸ்ய கீர்தய ।
ஜீவிஷ்யாமஹமேதேந யயாதிரிவ ஸாதுஷு ॥
āsitaṃ ṡayitaṃ bhuktaṃ sūta! rāmasya kīrtaya ।
jīviṣyāmahamētēna yayātiriva sādhuṣu ॥
Tell me, O charioteer, how Rāma sat, slept and ate.
I shall also, doing the same way,
live just as Yayāti did in the company of Sādhus. The story of Yayāti is alluded to in Rāmāyaṇa a few times. The full story of Yayāti is available in Ādi Parva of Mahābhārata. Yayāti indulges in sensual pleasures on borrowed youth and then gets disgusted about it. Then he performs intense Tapa and attains heaven.
There, Yayāti boasts with Indra, that he was the greatest among the Tapasvis. As a consequence he falls down from heaven. Indra grants him a boon to fall among Sādhus. There they bequeath their entire Puṇya and thus Yayāti regains Heaven. Similarly, Daṡaratha hopes to change his life style to match that of Rāma.
2.58.13 இதி ஸூதோ நரேந்த்ரேண போதிதஸ்ஸஜ்ஜமாநயா ।
உவாச வாசா ராஜாநம் ஸ பாஷ்பபரிபத்தயா ॥
iti sūtō narēndrēṇa bōdhitassajjamānayā ।
uvāca vācā rājānaṃ sa bāṣpaparibaddhayā ॥
Thus asked by the lord of peoples,
the charioteer replied in a faltering voice,
choked by tears, to that king:
2.58.14 அப்ரவீந்மாம் மஹாராஜ! தர்மமேவாநுபாலயந் ।
அஞ்ஜலிம் ராகவ: க்ருத்வா ஸிரஸாऽபிப்ரணம்ய ச ॥
abravīnmāṃ mahārāja! dharmamēvānupālayan ।
añjaliṃ rāghavaḥ kṛtvā ṡirasā'bhipraṇamya ca ॥
O supreme king! Rāghava said to me,
in complete adherence to Dharma,
with palms joined in reverence
and bowing his head in salutations to you:
2.58.15 ஸூத! மத்வசநாத்தஸ்ய தாதஸ்ய விதிதாத்மந: ।
ஸிரஸா வந்தநீயஸ்ய வந்த்யௌ பாதௌ மஹாத்மந: ॥
sūta! madvacanāttasya tātasya viditātmanaḥ ।
ṡirasā vandanīyasya vandyau pādau mahātmanaḥ ॥
O Charioteer! I would like to say that
the feet of my sagacious father, the Mahātma,
which deserve to be touched by my head
are receiving my salutations!
2.58.16 ஸர்வமந்த:புரம் வாச்யம் ஸூத! மத்வசநாத்த்வயா ।
ஆரோக்யமவிஸேஷேண யதார்ஹம் சாபிவாதநம் ॥
sarvamantaḥpuraṃ vācyaṃ sūta! madvacanāttvayā ।
ārōgyamaviṡēṣēṇa yathārhaṃ cābhivādanam ॥
Please convey salutations, on my behalf,
to everyone in the inner quarters,
without exception and any distinction,
in an appropriate manner,
and my enquiries about their health and wellbeing!
2.58.17 மாதா ச மம கௌஸல்யா குஸலம் சாபிவாதநம் ।
அப்ரமாதம் ச வக்தவ்யா ப்ரூயாஸ்சைநாமிதம் வச: ॥
mātā ca mama kausalyā kuṡalaṃ cābhivādanam ।
apramādaṃ ca vaktavyā brūyāṡcaināmidaṃ vacaḥ ॥
Tell my mother Kousalyā that we are doing well
and that we offer our obeisance.
Tell her that she should be alert.

2.58.18 தர்மநித்யா யதாகாலமக்ந்யகாரபரா பவ ।
தேவி! தேவஸ்ய பாதௌ ச தேவவத்பரிபாலய ॥
dharmanityā yathākālamagnyagāraparā bhava ।
dēvi! dēvasya pādau ca dēvavatparipālaya ॥
O queen! Constantly adhering to Dharma,
you may zealously see that all
fire rituals are performed in a timely manner.
And you may devote yourself to the
feet of the king, as if he is your god!
2.58.19 அபிமாநம் ச மாநம் ச த்யக்த்வா வர்தஸ்ய மாத்ருஷு ।
அநு ராஜாநமார்யாம் ச கைகேயீமம்ப காரய ॥
abhimānaṃ ca mānaṃ ca tyaktvā vartasya mātṛṣu ।
anu rājānamāryāṃ ca kaikēyīmamba kāraya ॥
Please regard all mothers without
any pretense of pride and haughtiness!
Please see that revered Kaikēyee would
oblige and be in good terms with the king.
2.58.20 குமாரே பரதே வ்ருத்திர்வர்திதவ்யா ச ராஜவத் ।
அர்தஜ்யேஷ்டா ஹி ராஜாநோ ராஜதர்மமநுஸ்மர ॥
kumārē bharatē vṛttirvartitavyā ca rājavat ।
arthajyēṣṭhā hi rājānō rājadharmamanusmara ॥
Regarding prince Bharata,
you shall treat him as if he were the king.
Keep in mind the royal customs and that
kings have the first claim on the treasury.
2.58.21 பரத: குஸலம் வாச்யோ வாச்யோ மத்வசநேந ச ।
ஸர்வாஸ்வேவ யதாந்யாயம் வ்ருத்திம் வர்தஸ்வ மாத்ருஷு ॥
bharataḥ kuṡalaṃ vācyō vācyō madvacanēna ca ।
sarvāsvēva yathānyāyaṃ vṛttiṃ vartasva mātṛṣu ॥
On my behalf, please ask about the wellbeing of Bharata
and tell him that it behooves on him to
treat all the mothers in an appropriate manner.
2.58.22 வக்தவ்யஸ்ச மஹாபாஹுரிக்ஷ்வாகுகுலநந்தந: ।
பிதரம் யௌவராஜ்யஸ்தோ ராஜ்யஸ்தமநுபாலய ॥
vaktavyaṡca mahābāhurikṣvākukulanandanaḥ ।
pitaraṃ yauvarājyasthō rājyasthamanupālaya ॥
Be sure to tell him, of the mighty arm,
the delight of the Ikshwākus,
that he shall hold the office of crown prince
in accordance with the wishes of father, who is still the King.
2.58.23 அதிக்ராந்தவயா ராஜா மாஸ்மைநம் வ்யவரோருத: ।
குமார ராஜ்யே ஜீவ த்வம் தஸ்யைவாஜ்ஞாப்ரவர்தநாத் ॥
atikrāntavayā rājā māsmainaṃ vyavarōrudhaḥ ।
kumāra rājyē jīva tvaṃ tasyaivājñāpravartanāt ॥
The king is advanced in age.
May you not restrain him in any manner.
May his wish and commands be carried out
by you from the office of crown prince.
2.58.24 அப்ரவீச்சாபி மாம் பூயோ ப்ருஸமஸ்ரூணி வர்தயந் ।
மாதேவ மம மாதா தே த்ரஷ்டவ்யா புத்ரகர்திநீ ॥
abravīccāpi māṃ bhūyō bhṛṡamaṡrūṇi vartayan ।
mātēva mama mātā tē draṣṭavyā putragardhinī ॥
And he said, repeatedly, shedding a flood of tears,
“Please look upon my mother,
who covets her son, as your own mother”.
2.58.25 இத்யேவம் மாம் மஹராஜ! ப்ருவந்நேவ மஹாயஸா: ।
ராமோ ராஜீவதாம்ராக்ஷோ ப்ருஸமஸ்ரூண்யவர்தயத் ॥
ityēvaṃ māṃ maharāja! bruvannēva mahāyaṡāḥ ।
rāmō rājīvatāmrākṣō bhṛṡamaṡrūṇyavartayat ॥
Saying this to me, O supreme King,
the lotus eyed Rāma of great repute
shed a flood of tears.
2.58.26 லக்ஷ்மணஸ்து ஸுஸங்க்ருத்தோ நிஸ்ஸ்வஸந்வாக்யமப்ரவீத் ।
கேநாயமபராதேந ராஜபுத்ரோ விவாஸித: ॥
lakṣmaṇastu susaṅkṛddhō niṡṡvasanvākyamabravīt ।
kēnāyamaparādhēna rājaputrō vivāsitaḥ ॥
But Lakshmaṇa, full of anger,
heaving violent sighs, said these words:
“What was the offence, for which
the son of the king had to be exiled ? These Ṡlōkas succinctly represents the legitimate reaction, not only of Lakshmaṇa, but also of everyone in Ayōdhyā.
2.58.27 ராஜ்ஞா து கலு கைகேய்யா லகுத்வாஸ்ரித்ய ஸாஸநம் ।
க்ருதம் கார்யமகார்யம் வா வயம் யேநாபிபீடிதா: ॥
rājñā tu khalu kaikēyyā laghutvāṡritya ṡāsanam ।
kṛtaṃ kāryamakāryaṃ vā vayaṃ yēnābhipīḍitāḥ ॥
Whatever the king did, appropriate or not,
obeying Kaikēyee’s petty dictates,
has brought us this hardship.
2.58.28 யதி ப்ரவ்ராஜிதோ ராமோ லோபகாரணகாரிதம் ।
வரதாநநிமித்தம் வா ஸர்வதா துஷ்க்ருதம் க்ருதம் ॥
yadi pravrājitō rāmō lōbhakāraṇakāritam ।
varadānanimittaṃ vā sarvathā duṣkṛtaṃ kṛtam ॥
Whether it is for the reason of
honoring a boon that was given,
or for some other selfish reason,
sending Rāma in exile is a
reprehensible act, in any sense.
2.58.29 இதம் தாவத்யதாகாமமீஸ்வரஸ்ய க்ருதே க்ருதம் ।
ராமஸ்ய து பரித்யாகே ந ஹேது முபலக்ஷயே ॥
idaṃ tāvadyathākāmamīṡvarasya kṛtē kṛtam ।
rāmasya tu parityāgē na hētu mupalakṣayē ॥
I do not see any reason for Rāma to be abandoned
except that it has been done as per the whims and fancies
of the people at the helm.
2.58.30 அஸமீக்ஷய ஸமாரப்தம் விருத்தம் புத்திலாகவாத் ।
ஜநயிஷ்யதி ஸங்க்ரோஸம் ராகவஸ்ய விவாஸநம் ॥
asamīkṣaya samārabdhaṃ viruddhaṃ budhdilāghavāt ।
janayiṣyati saṅkrōṡaṃ rāghavasya vivāsanam ॥
The exiling of Rāma, which has been done
in a flippant manner without proper thought,
negating everything that is plausible,
can generate nothing but sorrow.
2.58.31 அஹம் தாவந்மஹாராஜே பித்ருத்வம் நோபலக்ஷ்யே ।
ப்ராதா பர்தா ச பந்துஸ்ச பிதா ச மம ராகவ: ॥
ahaṃ tāvanmahārājē pitṛtvaṃ nōpalakṣyē ।
bhrātā bhartā ca bandhuṡca pitā ca mama rāghavaḥ ॥
Hence, I cannot see a father in that supreme king.
Rāghava alone is my brother, master, relative and father.
2.58.32 ஸர்வர்லோகப்ரியம் த்யக்த்வா ஸர்வலோகஹிதே ரதம் ।
ஸர்வலோகோऽநுரஜ்யேத கதம் த்வாऽநேநகர்மணா ॥
sarvarlōkapriyaṃ tyaktvā sarvalōkahitē ratam ।
sarvalōkō'nurajyēta kathaṃ tvā'nēnakarmaṇā ॥
How can you hope to be liked by this world,
by doing such an act, of abandoning someone
who is the darling of all worlds
and who is devoted to the good of all?
2.58.33 ஸர்வப்ரஜாபிராமம் ஹி ராமம் ப்ரவ்ராஜ்ய தார்மிகம் ।
ஸர்வலோகம் விருத்யேமம் கதம் ராஜா பவிஷ்யஸி ॥
sarvaprajābhirāmaṃ hi rāmaṃ pravrājya dhārmikam ।
sarvalōkaṃ virudhyēmaṃ kathaṃ rājā bhaviṣyasi ॥
How can you continue as a king,
having antagonized the entire world by sending
Rāma, the Dhārmika, the darling of all worlds, into exile?
2.58.34 ஜாநகீ து மஹாராஜ! நிஸ்ஸ்வஸந்தீ மநஸ்விநீ ।
பூதோபஹதசித்தேவ விஷ்டிதா விஸ்ம்ருதா ஸ்மிதா ॥
jānakī tu mahārāja! niṡṡvasantī manasvinī ।
bhūtōpahatacittēva viṣṭhitā vismṛtā smitā ॥
As for the sensitive daughter of Janaka,
O supreme king, she stood oblivious,
like one possessed, heaving great sighs.
2.58.35 அத்ருஷ்டபூர்வவ்யஸநா ராஜ்யபுத்ரீ யஸஸ்விநீ ।
தேந து:கேந ருததீ நைவ மாம் கிஞ்சிதப்ரவீத் ॥
adṛṣṭapūrvavyasanā rājyaputrī yaṡasvinī ।
tēna duḥkhēna rudatī naiva māṃ kiñcidabravīt ॥
Having never experienced such a hardship,
that well regarded daughter of a king
wept in sadness; and did not say a word to me.
2.58.36 உத்வீக்ஷமாணா பர்தாரம் முகேந பரிஸுஷ்யதா ।
முமோச ஸஹஸா பாஷ்பம் மாம் ப்ரயாந்தமுதீக்ஷ்ய ஸா ॥
udvīkṣamāṇā bhartāraṃ mukhēna pariṡuṣyatā ।
mumōca sahasā bāṣpaṃ māṃ prayāntamudīkṣya sā ॥
She looked up at her master,
her face parched by grief.
Tears rolled off her face as she
followed me with her eyes when I departed.
2.58.37 ததைவ ராமோऽஸ்ருமுக: க்ருதாஞ்ஜலி:
ஸ்திதோऽபவல்லக்ஷ்மணபாஹுபாலித: ।
ததைவ ஸீதா ருததீ தபஸ்விநீ
நிரீக்ஷதே ராஜரதம் ததைவ மாம் ॥
tathaiva rāmō'ṡrumukhaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ
sthitō'bhavallakṣmaṇabāhupālitaḥ ।
tathaiva sītā rudatī tapasvinī
nirīkṣatē rājarathaṃ tathaiva mām ॥
Rāma, his face full of tears, stood there with joined palms,
waited upon by the solicitous Lakshmaṇa.
Similarly, the sensitive Seetā, weeping,
transfixed her eyes on the royal chariot and me.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே அஷ்டபஞ்சாஸஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē aṣṭapañcāṡassargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the fifty eighth Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
