ஸ ப்ராது: ஸாஸநம் ஸ்ருத்வா ஸர்வமப்ரதிகூலயந் ।
ஆரோப்ய மைதிலீம் பூர்வமாருரோஹாऽऽத்மவாம் ஸ்தத: ॥
sa bhrātuḥ ṡāsanaṃ ṡrutvā sarvamapratikūlayan ।
ārōpya maithilīṃ pūrvamārurōhā''tmavāṃ stataḥ ॥
The sensible Lakshmaṇa,
hearing the instructions of his brother
and following them without any deviation,
first put Seetā on board and then got in himself.
2.52.77
அதாருரோஹ தேஜஸ்வீ ஸ்வயம் லக்ஷ்மணபூர்வஜ: ।
ததோ நிஷாதாதிபதிர்குஹோ ஜ்ஞாதீநசோதயத் ॥
athārurōha tējasvī svayaṃ lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ ।
tatō niṣādādhipatirguhō jñātīnacōdayat ॥
Then, the radiant elder brother of Lakshmaṇa,
also got in and asked the kinsmen of
Guha, the hunter chieftain, to start.
2.52.78
ராகவோऽபி மஹாதேஜா நாவமாருஹ்ய தாம் தத: ।
ப்ரஹ்மவத் க்ஷத்ரவச்சைவ ஜஜாப ஹிதமாத்மந: ॥
rāghavō'pi mahātējā nāvamāruhya tāṃ tataḥ ।
brahmavat kṣatravaccaiva jajāpa hitamātmanaḥ ॥
Getting on board that boat, the supremely radiant Rāghava
recited a Mantra meant for both Brāhmaṇas and Kshatriyas,
which would bode well for him.
2.52.79
ஆசம்ய ச யதாஸாஸ்த்ரம் நதீம் தாம் ஸஹ ஸீதயா ।
ப்ராணமத்ப்ரீதிஸம்ஹ்ருஷ்டோ லக்ஷ்மணஸ்சாமிதப்ரப: ॥
ācamya ca yathāṡāstraṃ nadīṃ tāṃ saha sītayā ।
prāṇamatprītisaṃhṛṣṭō lakṣmaṇaṡcāmitaprabhaḥ ॥
Having taken the ceremonial sip of water in a customary manner,
he felt exhilarated to offer salutations to the river,
along with Seetā. And so did Lakshmaṇa, of incomparable luster.
2.52.80
அநுஜ்ஞாய ஸுமந்த்ரம் ச ஸபலம் சைவ தம் குஹம் ।
ஆஸ்தாய நாவம் ராமஸ்து சோதயாமாஸ நாவிகாந் ॥
anujñāya sumantraṃ ca sabalaṃ caiva taṃ guham ।
āsthāya nāvaṃ rāmastu cōdayāmāsa nāvikān ॥
Bidding farewell to Sumantra and to Guha and his army,
Rāma took his seat in the boat and
waved to the boatmen to proceed.
2.52.81
ததஸ்தைஸ்சோதிதா ஸா நௌ: கர்ணதாரஸமாஹிதா ।
ஸுபஸ்ப்யவேகாபிஹதா ஸீக்ரம் ஸலிலமத்யகாத் ॥
tatastaiṡcōditā sā nauḥ karṇadhārasamāhitā ।
ṡubhasphyavēgābhihatā ṡīghraṃ salilamatyagāt ॥
The boat, well steered by the helmsman
and by the vigorous work on the paddles,
swiftly crossed the waters.
2.52.82
மத்யம் து ஸமநுப்ராப்ய பாகீரத்யாஸ்த்வநிந்திதா ।
வைதேஹீ ப்ராஞ்ஜலிர்பூத்வா தாம் நதீமிதமப்ரவீத் ॥
madhyaṃ tu samanuprāpya bhāgīrathyāstvaninditā ।
vaidēhī prāñjalirbhūtvā tāṃ nadīmidamabravīt ॥
When they were midstream of the Bhāgeerathi,
The irreproachable princess of Vidēha,
prayed to the river with joined palms, saying:

புத்ரோ தஸரதஸ்யாயம் மஹாராஜஸ்ய தீமத: ।
நிதேஸம் பாரயித்வேமம் கங்கே த்வதபிரக்ஷித: ॥
சதுர்தஸ ஹி வர்ஷாணி ஸமக்ராண்யுஷ்ய காநநே ।
ப்ராத்ரா ஸஹ மயா சைவ புந: ப்ரத்யாகமிஷ்யதி ॥
ததஸ்த்வாம் தேவி! ஸுபகே! க்ஷேமேண புநராகதா ।
யக்ஷ்யே ப்ரமுதிதா கங்கே! ஸர்வகாமஸம்ருத்திநீ ॥
putrō daṡarathasyāyaṃ mahārājasya dhīmataḥ ।
nidēṡaṃ pārayitvēmaṃ gaṅgē tvadabhirakṣitaḥ ॥
caturdaṡa hi varṣāṇi samagrāṇyuṣya kānanē ।
bhrātrā saha mayā caiva punaḥ pratyāgamiṣyati ॥
tatastvāṃ dēvi! subhagē! kṣēmēṇa punarāgatā ।
yakṣyē pramuditā gaṅgē! sarvakāmasamṛddhinī ॥
O blessed and beautiful Goddess Gaṅga!
When this son of the great King, the perspicacious Daṡaratha,
returns with his brother and me,
after carrying out the command by your grace and blessings
by living for a full fourteen years in the forest,
I, having come back safe and sound,
and with all my desires fulfilled,
shall worship you, in all happiness!
2.52.86-87a
த்வம் ஹி த்ரிபதகா தேவி! ப்ரஹ்மலோகம் ஸமீக்ஷஸே ।
பார்யா சோததிராஜஸ்ய லோகேऽஸ்மிந் ஸம்ப்ரத்ருஸ்யஸே ।
ஸா த்வாம் தேவி! நமஸ்யாமி ப்ரஸம்ஸாமி ச ஸோபநே ॥
tvaṃ hi tripathagā dēvi! brahmalōkaṃ samīkṣasē ।
bhāryā cōdadhirājasya lōkē'smin sampradṛṡyasē ।
sā tvāṃ dēvi! namasyāmi praṡaṃsāmi ca ṡōbhanē ॥
My salutations to you, O goddess!
You flow in all the three worlds,
simultaneously witnessing the world of Brahma and
being the queen of the lord of the ocean in this world!
My praise to you, O auspicious and splendid one!
2.52.87b-88
ப்ராப்தராஜ்யே நரவ்யாக்ரே ஸிவேந புநராகதே ।
கவாம் ஸதஸஹஸ்ராணி வஸ்த்ராண்யந்நம் ச பேஸலம் ।
ப்ராஹ்மணேப்ய: ப்ரதாஸ்யாமி தவ ப்ரியசிகீர்ஷயா ॥
prāptarājyē naravyāghrē ṡivēna punarāgatē ।
gavāṃ ṡatasahasrāṇi vastrāṇyannaṃ ca pēṡalam ।
brāhmaṇēbhyaḥ pradāsyāmi tava priyacikīrṣayā ॥
When this tiger among men returns,
and safely regains his kingdom,
I shall please you by presenting
hundreds of thousands of cows,
garments and the most delicious foods to Brāhmaṇas.
2.52.89
ஸுராகடஸஹஸ்ரேண மாம்ஸபூதௌதநேந ச ।
யக்ஷ்யே த்வாம் ப்ரயதா தேவி புரீம் புநருபாகதா ॥
surāghaṭasahasrēṇa māṃsabhūtaudanēna ca ।
yakṣyē tvāṃ prayatā dēvi purīṃ punarupāgatā ॥
Upon my return to the city,
I shall worship you with all diligence,
offering a thousand pots of liquor,
as well as various dishes of meat, O Goddess!
2.52.90
யாநி த்வத்தீரவாஸீநி தைவதாநி ச ஸந்தி ஹி ।
தாநி ஸர்வாணி யக்ஷ்யாமி தீர்தாந்யாயதநாநி ச ॥
yāni tvattīravāsīni daivatāni ca santi hi ।
tāni sarvāṇi yakṣyāmi tīrthānyāyatanāni ca ॥
And I shall worship all the deities
that have shrines on your banks
and also all sacred spots and temples.
2.52.91
புநரேவ மஹாபாஹுர்மயா ப்ராத்ரா ச ஸங்கத: ।
அயோத்யாம் வநவாஸாத்து ப்ரவிஸத்வநகோऽநகே! ॥
punarēva mahābāhurmayā bhrātrā ca saṅgataḥ ।
ayōdhyāṃ vanavāsāttu praviṡatvanaghō'naghē! ॥
May the sinless one of mighty arm (Rāma)
return to Ayōdhyā with me and his brother,
from his life in the forest, O sinless one!
2.52.92
ததா ஸம்பாஷமாணா ஸா ஸீதா கங்காமநிந்திதா ।
தக்ஷிணா தக்ஷிணம் தீரம் க்ஷிப்ரமேவாப்யுபாகமத் ॥
tathā sambhāṣamāṇā sā sītā gaṅgāmaninditā ।
dakṣiṇā dakṣiṇaṃ tīraṃ kṣipramēvābhyupāgamat ॥
In no time, while speaking like this to Gaṅga,
the irreproachable and able Seetā
reached the banks on the southern side.
2.52.93
தீரம் து ஸமநுப்ராப்ய நாவம் ஹித்வா நரர்ஷப: ।
ப்ராதிஷ்டத ஸஹ ப்ராத்ரா வைதேஹ்யா ச பரந்தப: ॥
tīraṃ tu samanuprāpya nāvaṃ hitvā nararṣabhaḥ ।
prātiṣṭhata saha bhrātrā vaidēhyā ca parantapaḥ ॥
Reaching the bank and getting off the boat,
that bull among men, harrier of the foe (Rāma),
proceeded forward along with his brother
and the princess of Vidēha.
2.52.94
அதாப்ரவீந்மஹாபாஹு: ஸுமித்ராநந்தவர்தநம் ।
பவ ஸம்ரக்ஷணார்தாய ஸஜநே விஜநேऽபி வா ॥
athābravīnmahābāhuḥ sumitrānandavardhanam ।
bhava saṃrakṣaṇārthāya sajanē vijanē'pi vā ॥
Then that man of mighty arm (Rāma)
said to the perpetual joy of Sumitrā (Lakshmaṇa)
may you be on full vigilance (from now on),
regardless of whether there are people around or not.
2.52.95
அவஸ்யம் ரக்ஷணம் கார்யமத்ருஷ்டே விஜநே வநே ।
அக்ரதோ கச்ச ஸௌமித்ரே! ஸீதா த்வாமநுகச்சது ॥
avaṡyaṃ rakṣaṇaṃ kāryamadṛṣṭē vijanē vanē ।
agratō gaccha saumitrē! sītā tvāmanugacchatu ॥
We must be on full alert in this Vana
which has no people and which we have never seen before.
Please walk in front! Seetā shall follow you!
2.52.96-97a
ப்ருஷ்டதோऽஹம் கமிஷ்யாமி த்வாம் ச ஸீதாம் ச பாலயந் ।
அந்யோந்யஸ்யேஹ நோ ரக்ஷா கர்தவ்யா புருஷர்ஷப ।
ந ஹி தாவததிக்ராந்தா ஸுகரா காசந க்ரியா ॥
pṛṣṭhatō'haṃ gamiṣyāmi tvāṃ ca sītāṃ ca pālayan ।
anyōnyasyēha nō rakṣā kartavyā puruṣarṣabha ।
na hi tāvadatikrāntā sukarā kācana kriyā ॥
I will follow from behind protecting you and Seetā.
O bull among men! We must protect each other here,
for, it will not be easy to set things right again,
once they go out of hand.
2.52.97b-98
அத்ய து:கம் து வைதேஹீ வநவாஸஸ்ய வேத்ஸ்யதி ।
ப்ரணஷ்டஜநஸம்பாதம் க்ஷேத்ராராமவிவர்ஜிதம் ।
விஷமம் ச ப்ரபாதம் ச வநமத்ய ப்ரவேக்ஷ்யதி ॥
adya duḥkhaṃ tu vaidēhī vanavāsasya vētsyati ।
praṇaṣṭajanasambādhaṃ kṣētrārāmavivarjitam ।
viṣamaṃ ca prapātaṃ ca vanamadya pravēkṣyati ॥
Today, the princess of Vidēha will learn
about the hardships of living in Vana.
For, she will be entering interiors of Vana
with no press of people and no fields and gardens,
all uneven and full of pits.
2.52.99
ஸ்ருத்வா ராமஸ்ய வசநம் ப்ரதஸ்தே லக்ஷ்மணோऽக்ரத: ।
அநந்தரம் ச ஸீதாயா ராகவோ ரகுநந்தந: ॥
ṡrutvā rāmasya vacanaṃ pratasthē lakṣmaṇō'grataḥ ।
anantaraṃ ca sītāyā rāghavō raghunandanaḥ ॥
Hearing those words of Rāma,
Lakshmaṇa walked in the front and
Rāghava, the delight of Raghu dynasty, after Seetā.
2.52.100
கதம் து கங்காபரபாரமாஸு
ராமம் ஸுமந்த்ர: ப்ரததம் நிரீக்ஷ்ய ।
அத்வப்ரகர்ஷாத்விநிவ்ருத்தத்ருஷ்டி
ர்முமோச பாஷ்பம் வ்யதித ஸ்தபஸ்வீ ॥
gataṃ tu gaṅgāparapāramāṡu
rāmaṃ sumantraḥ pratataṃ nirīkṣya ।
adhvaprakarṣādvinivṛttadṛṣṭi
rmumōca bāṣpaṃ vyathita stapasvī ॥
Having kept his gaze fixed on Rāma
till he reached the other side of Gaṅga,
the miserable Sumantra ceased looking
when he was too far away to be seen;
and then shed tears of grief.
2.52.101
ஸ லோகபாலப்ரதிமப்ரபாவவாம்
ஸ்தீர்த்வா மஹாத்மா வரதோ மஹாநதீம் ।
தத: ஸம்ருத்தாந் ஸுபஸஸ்யமாலிந:
க்ரமேண வத்ஸாந் முதிதாநுபாகமத் ॥
sa lōkapālapratimaprabhāvavāṃ
stīrtvā mahātmā varadō mahānadīm ।
tataḥ samṛddhān ṡubhasasyamālinaḥ
kramēṇa vatsān muditānupāgamat ॥
Having crossed the great river,
that Mahātma, who fulfills everyone’s wishes
and who was comparable to the Guardians of the worlds,
proceeded steadily and reached the Vatsa country
which was a happy and prosperous region
sporting a garland of standing crops.
2.52.102
தௌ தத்ர ஹத்வா சதுரோ மஹாம்ருகாந்
வராஹம்ருஸ்யம் ப்ருஷதம் மஹாருரும் ।
ஆதாய மேத்யம் த்வரிதம் புபுக்ஷிதௌ
வாஸாய காலே யயதுர்வநஸ்பதிம் ॥
tau tatra hatvā caturō mahāmṛgān
varāhamṛṡyaṃ pṛṣataṃ mahārurum ।
ādāya mēdhyaṃ tvaritaṃ bubhukṣitau
vāsāya kālē yayaturvanaspatim ॥
Then those two hungry brothers
killed four great beasts,
including a boar, a white-footed antelope,
a spotted antelope and a great deer.
They took the fresh meat and quickly reached
the foot of a tree, to spend the night there.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே த்விபஞ்சாஸ ஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē dvipañcāṡa ssargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the second Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.

May the sinless one of mighty arm (Rāma)
return to Ayōdhyā with me and his brother,
from his life in the forest, O sinless one!
2.52.92
ததா ஸம்பாஷமாணா ஸா ஸீதா கங்காமநிந்திதா ।
தக்ஷிணா தக்ஷிணம் தீரம் க்ஷிப்ரமேவாப்யுபாகமத் ॥
tathā sambhāṣamāṇā sā sītā gaṅgāmaninditā ।
dakṣiṇā dakṣiṇaṃ tīraṃ kṣipramēvābhyupāgamat ॥
In no time, while speaking like this to Gaṅga,
the irreproachable and able Seetā
reached the banks on the southern side.
2.52.93
தீரம் து ஸமநுப்ராப்ய நாவம் ஹித்வா நரர்ஷப: ।
ப்ராதிஷ்டத ஸஹ ப்ராத்ரா வைதேஹ்யா ச பரந்தப: ॥
tīraṃ tu samanuprāpya nāvaṃ hitvā nararṣabhaḥ ।
prātiṣṭhata saha bhrātrā vaidēhyā ca parantapaḥ ॥
Reaching the bank and getting off the boat,
that bull among men, harrier of the foe (Rāma),
proceeded forward along with his brother
and the princess of Vidēha.
2.52.94
அதாப்ரவீந்மஹாபாஹு: ஸுமித்ராநந்தவர்தநம் ।
பவ ஸம்ரக்ஷணார்தாய ஸஜநே விஜநேऽபி வா ॥
athābravīnmahābāhuḥ sumitrānandavardhanam ।
bhava saṃrakṣaṇārthāya sajanē vijanē'pi vā ॥
Then that man of mighty arm (Rāma)
said to the perpetual joy of Sumitrā (Lakshmaṇa)
may you be on full vigilance (from now on),
regardless of whether there are people around or not.
2.52.95
அவஸ்யம் ரக்ஷணம் கார்யமத்ருஷ்டே விஜநே வநே ।
அக்ரதோ கச்ச ஸௌமித்ரே! ஸீதா த்வாமநுகச்சது ॥
avaṡyaṃ rakṣaṇaṃ kāryamadṛṣṭē vijanē vanē ।
agratō gaccha saumitrē! sītā tvāmanugacchatu ॥
We must be on full alert in this Vana
which has no people and which we have never seen before.
Please walk in front! Seetā shall follow you!
2.52.96-97a
ப்ருஷ்டதோऽஹம் கமிஷ்யாமி த்வாம் ச ஸீதாம் ச பாலயந் ।
அந்யோந்யஸ்யேஹ நோ ரக்ஷா கர்தவ்யா புருஷர்ஷப ।
ந ஹி தாவததிக்ராந்தா ஸுகரா காசந க்ரியா ॥
pṛṣṭhatō'haṃ gamiṣyāmi tvāṃ ca sītāṃ ca pālayan ।
anyōnyasyēha nō rakṣā kartavyā puruṣarṣabha ।
na hi tāvadatikrāntā sukarā kācana kriyā ॥
I will follow from behind protecting you and Seetā.
O bull among men! We must protect each other here,
for, it will not be easy to set things right again,
once they go out of hand.
2.52.97b-98
அத்ய து:கம் து வைதேஹீ வநவாஸஸ்ய வேத்ஸ்யதி ।
ப்ரணஷ்டஜநஸம்பாதம் க்ஷேத்ராராமவிவர்ஜிதம் ।
விஷமம் ச ப்ரபாதம் ச வநமத்ய ப்ரவேக்ஷ்யதி ॥
adya duḥkhaṃ tu vaidēhī vanavāsasya vētsyati ।
praṇaṣṭajanasambādhaṃ kṣētrārāmavivarjitam ।
viṣamaṃ ca prapātaṃ ca vanamadya pravēkṣyati ॥
Today, the princess of Vidēha will learn
about the hardships of living in Vana.
For, she will be entering interiors of Vana
with no press of people and no fields and gardens,
all uneven and full of pits.
2.52.99
ஸ்ருத்வா ராமஸ்ய வசநம் ப்ரதஸ்தே லக்ஷ்மணோऽக்ரத: ।
அநந்தரம் ச ஸீதாயா ராகவோ ரகுநந்தந: ॥
ṡrutvā rāmasya vacanaṃ pratasthē lakṣmaṇō'grataḥ ।
anantaraṃ ca sītāyā rāghavō raghunandanaḥ ॥
Hearing those words of Rāma,
Lakshmaṇa walked in the front and
Rāghava, the delight of Raghu dynasty, after Seetā.
2.52.100
கதம் து கங்காபரபாரமாஸு
ராமம் ஸுமந்த்ர: ப்ரததம் நிரீக்ஷ்ய ।
அத்வப்ரகர்ஷாத்விநிவ்ருத்தத்ருஷ்டி
ர்முமோச பாஷ்பம் வ்யதித ஸ்தபஸ்வீ ॥
gataṃ tu gaṅgāparapāramāṡu
rāmaṃ sumantraḥ pratataṃ nirīkṣya ।
adhvaprakarṣādvinivṛttadṛṣṭi
rmumōca bāṣpaṃ vyathita stapasvī ॥
Having kept his gaze fixed on Rāma
till he reached the other side of Gaṅga,
the miserable Sumantra ceased looking
when he was too far away to be seen;
and then shed tears of grief.
2.52.101
ஸ லோகபாலப்ரதிமப்ரபாவவாம்
ஸ்தீர்த்வா மஹாத்மா வரதோ மஹாநதீம் ।
தத: ஸம்ருத்தாந் ஸுபஸஸ்யமாலிந:
க்ரமேண வத்ஸாந் முதிதாநுபாகமத் ॥
sa lōkapālapratimaprabhāvavāṃ
stīrtvā mahātmā varadō mahānadīm ।
tataḥ samṛddhān ṡubhasasyamālinaḥ
kramēṇa vatsān muditānupāgamat ॥
Having crossed the great river,
that Mahātma, who fulfills everyone’s wishes
and who was comparable to the Guardians of the worlds,
proceeded steadily and reached the Vatsa country
which was a happy and prosperous region
sporting a garland of standing crops.
2.52.102
தௌ தத்ர ஹத்வா சதுரோ மஹாம்ருகாந்
வராஹம்ருஸ்யம் ப்ருஷதம் மஹாருரும் ।
ஆதாய மேத்யம் த்வரிதம் புபுக்ஷிதௌ
வாஸாய காலே யயதுர்வநஸ்பதிம் ॥
tau tatra hatvā caturō mahāmṛgān
varāhamṛṡyaṃ pṛṣataṃ mahārurum ।
ādāya mēdhyaṃ tvaritaṃ bubhukṣitau
vāsāya kālē yayaturvanaspatim ॥
Then those two hungry brothers
killed four great beasts,
including a boar, a white-footed antelope,
a spotted antelope and a great deer.
They took the fresh meat and quickly reached
the foot of a tree, to spend the night there.
இத்யார்ஷே ஸ்ரீமத்ராமாயணே வால்மீகீயே ஆதிகாவ்யே
அயோத்யாகாண்டே த்விபஞ்சாஸ ஸ்ஸர்க: ॥
ityārṣē ṡrīmadrāmāyaṇē vālmīkīyē ādikāvyē
ayōdhyākāṇḍē dvipañcāṡa ssargaḥ ॥
Thus concludes the second Sarga
in Ayōdhyā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Rāmāyaṇa,
the first ever poem of humankind,
composed by Vālmeeki.
